Wave Goodbye Lyrics

Words get tangled on your tongue
And you stumble on your feet
When you miss somebody
And everywhere you think you see them
Walking down the street
When you miss somebody
When you miss somebody
You tell yourself a hundred thousand times
Nobody ever lives forever
So you give it one more try
To Wave Goodbye, wave goodbye

Every hurtful thing you ever said
Is ringing in your ear
When you miss somebody
And everything of beauty that you see
Only brings a tear
When you miss somebody
When you miss somebody
You tell yourself everything will be alright
Try to stand up strong and brave
When all you want to do is lay down and die

How long I've waited for an answer or a sign
Lonely and weary from
The troubled task of trying
To wave goodbye

So now you start to recognize
That every single path you see
Leads to a tear in your eye
So wave goodbye, wave goodbye

Wave Goodbye
  • Cornell wrote this for his good friend Jeff Buckley, who had recently died. Cornell has said that it was one of the most straightforward songs that he has ever written. (thanks, sinead - Galway, Ireland)
  • Jeff Buckley was an acclaimed singer/songwriter who drowned in 1997 while swimming in the Mississippi River. His father, Tim, was a very influential folk singer who died of a heroin overdose in 1977. Tim was 28 when he died, Jeff was 30.
  • Euphoria Morning was Cornell's first solo album, which he followed in 2007 with Carry On and in 2009 with Scream. He was formerly lead singer of Soundgarden, and went on to form Audioslave.

    Teenager In Love Lyrics

There was a point of no return
And I never looked back 'til I was holding your hand
    I was socially absurd
    But who cares
Yeah I've been shaky with withdrawals
I'm a junkie loser, I never would choose to
    Live the way I do
    But I do

    I'll be your angel
    I'll be your best friend
    Take me to New York
    Take me to heaven

    He's a teen, a Teenager In Love
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    What a tragic attraction
    What's the point of romance
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    I'm a fool with a curse and a crush
    What a magic distraction
    What's the point of romance
I never wanted to be a teenager in love
    Teenager, teenager

There was a point when we were cool
And it never went bad 'til you were holding his hand
    And I couldn't say a word
    But who cares
Now I've been talking to myself
Making up a new plan on how to get you back
    It'll probably never work
    And I'm screwed

    I'll be your angel
    I'll be your best friend
    I'm in my bedroom
    Let's go to heaven

    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    What a tragic attraction
    What's the point of romance
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    I'm a fool with a curse and a crush
    What a magic distraction
    What's the point of romance
I never wanted to be a teenager in love
    Teenager, teenager

    I don't wanna go out
I just wanna sit inside my bedroom
And obsess over everything I say to you
Young love is like a roller coaster
You couldn't pay me to ride if you tried
    Teenager, teenager, t-t-t-teenager

    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    What a tragic attraction
    What's the point of romance
    He's a teen, a teenager in love
    I'm a fool with a curse and a crush
    What a magic distraction
    What's the point of romance
I never wanted to be a teenager in love
    What's the point of romance

    Teenager In Love
  • A song musically inspired by the '50s Doo-Wop sound - specifically the Dion & The Belmonts tune of the same name - Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn says it is about a man he fancied for about three years. He came out as gay at age 30, shortly before the Pop Psychology album was issued. While he was in the closet, he tried to convince himself that he could be happy in a relationship with a woman, and dated a girl for two years the he intended to marry.

Glenn is part of the Mormon church, which added to his anxiety about coming out. He used the release of the album as an opportunity to talk about his sexuality and get it out in the open. Most of his friends and family were very supportive, which affirmed his decision.

    Hey Ya Lyrics

    One, two, three!
    My baby don't mess around
    Because she loves me so
And this I know fo sho!

    But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me walk out the door
Don't try to fight the feeling
Because the thought alone is killin' me right now
Thank God for Mom and Dad
    For sticking to together
    'Cause we don't know how

    Hey Ya! Hey ya!
    Hey ya! Hey ya!
    Hey ya! Hey ya!
    Hey ya! Hey ya!

    You think you've got it
Oh, you think you've go it
But "got it" just don't get it
    Till' there's nothing at all
    We've been together
    Oh, we've been together
    But separate's always better
    When there's feelings involved
If what they say is "Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes, then what makes
then what makes, then what makes
    Love the exception?
    So why you, why you
why you, why you, why you, why
    are we so in denial
When we know we're not happy here?

Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance (oh oh)
    Hey ya! Hey ya!
Don't want to meet your daddy (oh ohh)
just want you in my caddy (oh oh)
Hey ya! (oh, oh!) Hey ya! (oh, oh!)
Don't want to meet your momma
just want to make you cum-a (oh, oh!)
I'm (oh, oh) I'm (oh, oh) I'm just being honest! (oh, oh)
I'm just being honest! (oh, oh)

Hey! alright now! alright now, fellas!
    Yea?
Now, what cooler than being cool?
    Ice cold!
    I can't hear ya! I say what's, what's cooler than being cool?
    Ice cold!
    Alright alright alright alright alright
    alright alright alright alright alright
    alright alright alright alright alright
    Okay, now ladies!
    Yea?
Now we gonna break this thang down for just a few seconds,
Now don't have me break this thang down for nothin',
I want to see you on your badest behavior!
Lend me some sugar, I am your neighbor!
    Ah! Here we go now,

Shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it,
Shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it,
Shake it like a Polaroid picture! Hey ya!
Shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it,
Shake it, shake it, shake it, suga!
Shake it like a Polaroid picture!

Now all the Beyonce's, and Lucy Liu's, and baby dolls,
Get on tha floor get on tha floor!
Shake it like a Polaroid picture!
    Oh, you! oh, you!

    Hey Ya
  • Outkast is a rap duo who go by the names Big Boi and Andre 3000. In 2003, they made a double album, with each member contributing half. Big Boi's album was called Speakerboxxx while Andre's was The Love Below. This was Andre's song, and the first single from the album.
  • This was a huge crossover hit, getting lots of play on hip-hop, Top 40 and R&B radio stations. For much of the time this was #1 in the US, an Outkast song from Big Boi's album Speakerboxxx called "The Way You Move" was #2.
  • This is a very upbeat and energetic song, but according to Andre 3000, it is about the difficulty in keeping a relationship together. The album is mostly about the quest for love.
  • Andre wrote the first version of the song around 1999, and it almost made it onto their 2000 album Stankonia. At the time the song was called "Thank God For Mom And Dad." He started working on it again in 2002, doing lots of experimentation along the way. A lot of lyrics he wrote for the song didn't make the cut.
  • Aaron Mills from the funk band Cameo was brought in to play bass, but Andre played all the other instruments. The guitar chords were the first ones he learned.
  • Andre is the only male voice on the song. He did each line over and over, and by the time it was edited together, it sounded like other people were singing with him.
  • The girls who respond to Andre when he says, "Hey Ladies..." are actually just one person. A woman working in the studio was recorded saying "Yeah," and her voice was layered to sound like many.
  • This was finished just in time to be released as the first single from the album. They were going to put out "She Lives In My Lap" when Andre called the record company and told them this was finished and should be released first.
  • The video was inspired by The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, when the group came to America and created a frenzy. During that show, the audience was filled with screaming girls who went crazy for the group.

For the Outkast video, they made it as if an American band invaded England, played a TV show there, and created the same type of frenzy.
  • In the video, eight band members were played by Andre 3000, including the backup singers known as The Love Haters. Andre had to play the song through as each character three times so they could shoot it from different angles, and he was exhausted by the end. About 100 girls were brought in as extras to play the screaming fans.
  • The announcer at the beginning of the video is Ryan Phillippe, who has appeared in the movies Cruel Intentions and White Squall. He was married to actress Reece Witherspoon.
  • Polaroid pictures are instant photos taken with special cameras that spit out the picture right from the camera after it is snapped. You're not supposed to shake the picture, but most people did anyway because they thought it would help it develop. Andre 3000 found a new expression for dancing when he said: "Shake it like a Polaroid picture." He also helped sell a lot more Polaroid cameras, which had been mostly forgotten since digital cameras became popular. In the video, the girls shake Polaroid pictures.

Asked by The Huffington Post how the line "Shake it like a Polaroid picture" came about, André 3000 replied laughing, "I have no idea! In rap, lyric writing is what comes to mind, that was just the visual I had. And you're apparently not even supposed to do that. Same thing with the line about 'all the Beyonces & Lucy Lius'…when I was writing, her video was on. It's great when that happens, you're not thinking, you're just going with it."
  • When Andre 3000 performed this on various TV shows, he and four dancers would dress with a different theme for each performance. On one show, they might be tennis players, on another, jockeys.
  • This was the last performance and the big show stopper at the 2004 Grammy Awards, where Outkast won for Album of the Year. They went with an Indian theme, complete with a teepee and dancers dressed like squaws. The USC marching band came on stage midway through the song and played along.
  • This was the most-downloaded song on iTunes when the service was just starting to pick up steam (it launched in 2001, but went Windows-compatible in 2003). This was a huge boon for both the service and the song, since folks could legally download it for 99 cents without buying the whole album - a very big deal at the time. This got the song on a lot of iPods and helped make it ubiquitous.

Thanks to the iTunes exposure, "Hey Ya" became the first song in history to rack up one million downloads, making it the first song to achieve Platinum status as a download.
  • In 2004, the London band Razorlight recorded this with the London Community Gospel Choir. (thanks, Donovan Berry - El Dorado, AR)
  • The underground UK Indie act Dan Le Sac VS Scroobius Pip reference the song in their 2007 single "Thou Shalt Always Kill," singing "Thou shalt not shake it like a Polaroid picture" amongst other references to popular culture (thou shalt not wish your girlfriend was a freak like me, thou shalt not scream if you want to go faster, etc.). (thanks, John - Glasgow, United Kingdom)
  • Andre 3000 told the Mail on Sunday October 19, 2008 that people are always commenting on the green tartan trousers that he wore in the song's music video. He explained: "I designed those before I had my own label - Benjamin Bixby - using fabric I found in my hometown. I got a seamstress to sew them up for me, and then the year the single came out I started to see more and more green in people's collections. I don't know if there's such a thing as a royal green, but that's what I like to call it."
  • Outkast were the first group or duo to top the Billboard album and pop charts simultaneously in the 21st century. Over a four week period in January and February 2004, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below led the former survey, whilst this song reigned on the latter list.
  • After André 3000 sang "Shake it like a Polaroid picture," Polaroid issued the statement, "Shaking or waving can actually damage the image."
  • Andre 3000 wasn't the first to portray every band member in a video set on a variety show: Phil Collins did the same thing in his video for "Two Hearts."

  • Don't pay too much attention to the bestial sci-fi lyrics on this one - they were banged out by bass player/singer Aaron Beam once they had the track completed. "We tried putting some vocals on it that just weren't working," he explained. "So I said, 'Let me have a minute. I'm going to take it home, try to hash out something different. I have a vague idea of how to do this.' That was maybe the first song that I actually came up with my own vocal part on in the band." (Here's our full Aaron Beam interview .)
  • The riff on this song originated with a track Red Fang guitarist Bryan Giles came up with in his previous band, Party Time. They never released that song, so they brought it up when Red Fang was working on their third album, Whales and Leeches. Aaron Beam had the idea of repeating the riff throughout the song, which worked surprisingly well. He told us: "We knew almost immediately that that song was in a different league from the other things that we'd written up to that point. That was just a combination of Bryan's hyperactive writing style and me being kind of lazy and thinking, 'Hey, man, let's just hang out on this other part so that people can get a little rest. Their ears can rest for a little bit after that riff.'"
  • The video, which racked up over a million views on YouTube, has a unique concept: The band is downing beers when they get in a feud with some hardcore LARPers. They drink a lot more beer and fashion weapons from the cans, then return to challenge their adversaries in battle.

The video was directed by Rob "Whitey" McConnaughy, who told the band to pour out most of the beer instead of drinking it. They didn't take this direction very well and ended up getting hammered. The puking in the clip is real.

    Leather And Lace Lyrics

    Leather And Lace
  • Written by Stevie Nicks, this song about a beautifully incongruent couple was inspired by her past relationships, notably with Don Henley and Lindsey Buckingham. Nicks and Buckingham were a couple when they joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975; a year later they split and and she started dating Henley. They were together for about two years (see the Songfacts for "Sara" for more), and remained close after their breakup.

Nicks, who dated some of the most prominent men in music (Joe Walsh among them), often kept a working relationship and friendship with these guys long after their romance had fizzled.
  • In the liner notes to her TimeSpace album, Nicks explained: "I wrote this song because Waylon Jennings called me up and asked me to write a song called 'Leather and Lace.' It was to be a duet for him and his wife (Jessi Colter), and I worked very hard trying to explain what it was like to be in love with someone in the same business, and how to approach dealing with each other. It's probably the hardest thing in the world to do because it falls out of your hands and into the hands of the world, which tends to want you to not be able to handle it. I have to tell you now that Mr. Don Henley was pretty much responsible for this song because he came over every day and told me to either start over, or that I was on the right track, and he made me finish it (because I almost gave up many times). When it was finally finished, Don and I made a very simple demo of it - he sang it with me, and it was truly wonderful. And then I found out that Waylon and Jessi were breaking up, and Waylon wanted to just sing it by himself. After all the work I had put into the philosophy of 2 people dealing with this problem, I told Waylon that only 4 people in this world could sing this song: he and his wife, or myself and Don Henley. Don and I had been going out for quite awhile, and, bless his heart, he did sing it with me, and again, as fate would have it, it became one of the most special love songs that I would ever write... and remains that, even today, after all these years. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience, as was he. Blame it on my wild heart."
  • This was Henley's first hit away from the Eagles and one of Nicks' first hits away from Fleetwood Mac. They both had very successful solo careers.
  • When she toured for the Bella Donna album, Stevie performed this song with her backup singers Lori Perry and Sharon Celani sharing the microphone. With just the female perspective, Henley's part was altered:
"Could you ever love a man like me" >> "Could you ever love someone like me"
    "Sometimes I'm a strong man" >> "Sometimes I'm a strong one."

    Love is the Answer Lyrics

    Broken hearts everywhere
From stepping on them, we don’t care
Somebody tell me what we gonna do
Even though it’s plenty to share
People hungry on the streets, it ain’t fair
But you don’t think about it until it’s you

Now I’m gonna say how I feel
And what I wanna say is love’s the only thing that’s real
I won’t tell you what to do
Just believe that love, the only thing we have that’s true

    ‘Cause Love is the Answer
It’s the answer to the questions in your mind
    Love is the answer
It’s the answer, if you’re looking you will find

    The answer is love
    Yes, indeed
    The answer is love
    Say it again
    The answer is love
    I’m telling you now
    The answer is love

Friends know where to be found
To help you when you are down
But you know you are the one to blame
You know what’s wrong from what’s right
Nobody wins in a fight but still we play the game

I’m gonna say how I feel
And what I wanna say is love’s the only thing that’s real
I won’t tell you what to do
Just believe that love, the only thing that’s real and true

    ‘Cause love is the answer
It’s the answer to the questions in your mind
    Love is the answer
If you’re looking it’s the answer you gonna find

    Love is the answer
It’s the only thing that everybody needs
    Love is the answer
It’s the only thing that makes us truly free

Just look around the whole wide world
So many beautiful things to see
Take my hand and come along
    Spread some love with me

    ‘Cause love is the answer
It’s the answer to the questions in your mind
    Love is the answer
If you’re looking it’s the answer you gonna find

    Love is the answer

    Love is the Answer
  • This big and brassy old-school soul anthem was co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams. Blacc recalled to The Sun: "Pharrell had an idea of how we wanted the song to sound and I watched him build the instrumentation from the very beginning, in just a couple of hours."
  • Blacc's lyrics are about being in a culture where criticism is preeminent. "We live in a cynical time," he told The Guardian. "You can see it when you go on YouTube and there's 75% negative comments. It's just a disease of our time."

"That's why I wrote a song called Love is the Answer," Blacc continued. "Love is the answer, not hate or cynicism or anonymous denigration: 'Oh, I can hide behind this computer screen and be as foul and ignorant as I want.'"
  • Blacc told Pharrell Williams that he wanted the songs on the Lift Your Spirit album to "make people happy." Pharrell's response: "Funny you should say that, I'm working on a song called 'Happy' right now."
  • This is certainly not the first song called "Love is the Answer" (although there has only been one hit with that title: by England Dan & John Ford Coley, written by Todd Rundgren). Blacc was not deterred. "That's the most basic solution to the world's problems," he said in his Guitar Center Session interview. "Working with the biggest producer in the world, I really want this to be our message."

    Rx Queen
  • This is about lead singer Chino Moreno's wife, and how from the moment he saw her he wanted to be with her. He tracked her down and no one could take his mind off of her. The line, "Cause you're my girl and that's all right, if you sting me I won't mind" is saying she could've done practically anything to him and it wouldn't have phased him because he was in love. "We'll stop to rest on the moon and we'll make fire, I'll steal a carcass for you then feed off the virus" means he would do anything for her - even die for her. The song goes through the stages of their relationship. In the beginning, they were the bomb couple and no one could bring them down and now there isn't much left anymore. "Now we're all the virus" means that it all went to hell and he doesn't know what to do anymore. This man's love for his partner is so great he doesn't care about how badly she hurts him. She makes him feel good and even though she "stings" he doesn't care. In a way, he's addicted to her. The pain is nothing in comparison to the amazing feeling he gets when he's with her.
  • The girl in the song is his "Prescription Queen" because of all the drugs she has to take because of her illness. "Rx" stands for "prescription." (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA, for above 2)

    Reckless Jane
  • Beverley started this song in 1974 with the late Nick Drake when she and her husband John Martyn were living in Hampstead. She recalled to Uncut magazine: "Nick lived one-stop down the tube line, he would come and babysit sometimes. We started writing 'Reckless Jane' one day as a bit of a joke. I had the guitar and he was sitting on the floor, trying to look small and not being away, as usual!"

Beverley decided to complete the song in 2013 for the release of her The Phoenix & The Turtle album. "I couldn't look at it for long time after he died, but finally I decided to finish it," she said. "It's a pastoral English thing."
  • The song's character Jane is partly based on Beverley and other female 'muses,' two of whom were called Jane. "The song came out of a bit of fun," she told The Independent. "We tried to think of all the things we could rhyme with Jane, but 'hear her laughing like a drain' didn't make the cut!"

And if violence causes the silence
    Who are we mistaking
But you see it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head in your head
    They are fighting

With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head in your head they are crying

    [Chorus]
    In your head
    In your head
    Zombie zombie zombie ei ei
    What's in your head
    In your head.
Zombie, zombie, zombie ei, ei, ei, oh do,do,do,do,do,do,do,do

Another mother's breaking heart is taking over the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken

    Zombie
  • This was inspired by the IRA bombing in Warrington, Cheshire in 1993. Two children, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, were killed. The IRA (The Irish Republican Army) is a militant group determined to remove British troops from Northern Ireland.
  • Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan claimed that "Zombie" speaks about "The Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever." The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916." Like the responsive works of Yeats, Heaney and U2, the Cranberries claim they wrote "Zombie" to be a "Song for peace, peace among England and Ireland." (thanks, Andrew - Seattle, WA, for above 2)
  • On August 31, 1994, just a few weeks after this song was released, the IRA declared a ceasefire after 25 years of conflict, leading some critics of The Cranberries to wonder if the IRA was willing to call a truce to make sure the group didn't release any more songs about them.
  • The Cranberries performed this on Saturday Night Live on February 25, 1995. (thanks, John - Colorado Springs, CO)

    Show You Off Lyrics

You're like a sugar-sweet kiss in the morning,
Sunshine pouring right into my window.
Cool drink of water in the summer,
Better than the other, hm, side of the pillow.

You're everything that I'm not, and then a cherry on top,
Yeah, girl, I gotta see you tonight,
Yeah, I'm taking you out 'cause damn baby I'm proud.

Ey oh ey oh, when a guy like me
Ey oh ey oh, gets a girl like you
Yeah, you better know we're going to take it downtown,
Showin' everybody what I'm crazy about.
Ey oh ey oh, anywhere we go, ey oh ey oh, gotta let 'em all know.
And I'mma tattoo your name on my arm,
Baby I just wanna Show You Off.

    Yeah, show you off

You got a boy feelin' lucky, hm how you love me,
And you're making my heart go
Ticking like a time bomb, baby when the top drops,
And I'm watchin' your hair blow

No I don't wanna miss another kiss on your lips,
Yeah, girl I gotta see you tonight.
Pick you up about 8, countin' down I can't wait.

Hm when a guy like me, gets a girl like you,
You better know what I'm gonna do,
    What I'm gonna do, yeah.

    Yeah, show you off, oh,
Oh, baby I just wanna show you off.

    Show You Off
  • Dan + Shay open their Where It All Began album with this crowd-participation song. Shay told Taste of Country about the tune: "There's an 'Eh-oh, eh-oh' part," he said. "We played a show with Hunter Hayes and we teach the crowd the 'Eh-ohs' and they sing it back to us. People have fun with that song. It's called 'Show You Off,' so it's about showing a girl off, taking her downtown. It's high energy."
  • This was released as the second single from Where It All Began. Dan + Shay's fans helped pick this as the follow up to "19 You + Me." The duo told Taste of Country: "'Show You Off' has become a fan-favorite at live shows, so choosing it to represent them was a no-brainer."

Don't Look Back In Anger Lyrics

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
    A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
But all the things that you've seen
    Will slowly fade away

So I start a revolution from my bed
'Cos you said the brains I had went to my head.
    Step outside, summertime's in bloom
    Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

And so Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but Don't Look Back In Anger I heard you say

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
But please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
    Who'll throw it all away

I'm gonna start a revolution from my bed
'Cos you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'cos summertime's in bloom
    Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
'Cos you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

    So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as she's walking on by
    My soul slides away
But don't look back in anger
    Don't look back in anger
    I heard you say

    At least not today

    Don't Look Back In Anger
  • Noel Gallagher wrote the line, "Stand up beside the fireplace, take that look from off your face" because when he was a kid, his mother used to make him stand next to the fireplace and have photos taken. He always looked grumpy in these photos, so she told him to take that look from off his face. (thanks, Nick - Southampton, England)
  • Guitarist Noel Gallagher sang lead on this instead of their normal vocalist Liam Gallagher. (thanks, Craig MacDonald - Blair, Scotland)
  • The Beatles - and especially John Lennon - were a huge influence on Oasis, and that influence is perhaps most apparent in this song. The piano intro was taken from Lennon's "Imagine," and the line "So I start a revolution from my bed" is a reference to the sing, who staged a famous "bed-in" to promote peace.

Noel told interviewer Daniel Rachel (The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters) that he borrowed the line "the brains I had went to my head" from Lennon's tape-recorded notes for a memoir he was planning to write before his death.
  • Noel gave Liam the choice of which song to sing as he threatened he was singing lead on either "Don't Look back in Anger" or "Wonderwall" (After listening in studio, Liam said he would take the latter, which was really the one Noel wanted as it's a profession of his love to then friend-turned-girlfriend Meg). This is according to Paolo Hewitt's Getting High - The Adventures of Oasis. (thanks, Holly - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Noel Gallagher (from Uncut magazine August 2007): "We were in Paris playing with The Verve, and I had the chords for that song and started writing it. We were due to play 2 days later. Our first-ever big arena gig, it's called Sheffield Arena now. At the sound check, I was strumming away on the acoustic guitar, and our kid (Liam Gallagher) said, 'What's that you're singin'?" I wasn't singing anyway, I was just making it up. And our kid said, 'Are you singing 'So Sally can wait'.'' And I was like - that's genius! So I started singing, 'So Sally can wait."'

"I remember going back to the dressing room and writing it out," Noel continued. "It all came really quickly after that. (The title) 'Don't Look Back In Anger' just popped out. We wrote the words out in the dressing room, and we actually played it that night, in front of 18,000 other people. On acoustic guitar. Sat on a stool. Like an idiot. I never do that now."

"When we were coming off recording 'Wonderwall' and 'Don't Look Back In Anger,' I was originally gonna sing 'Wonderwall,' and Liam said, 'I wanna sing it!' And I was like, 'I'm singing one of them, so you take your pick. He chose 'Wonderwall' and I chose the other one," Noel added. "Then it came out as the single. And on that (BBC TV) series Our Friends In The North - the last ever one where they all meet up, when they're all older and have all got kids, and they're all alcoholics - that was the music for the end credits. And I still haven't seen that episode, but loads of people have come up to me, saying, 'Man it was so powerful.' And it kind of took a life of its own after that. It took over from 'Wonderwall' in England as our most famous song. And it's the biggest song of the night now, when we play it live. Which must do Liam's head in - as he doesn't get to sing it - but it makes me feel pretty good."
  • The song was written exactly 40 years on from when a play called Look Back In Anger by John Osborne was produced in London's west end. The main character, called Jimmy Porter, captured the angry and rebellious nature of the generation. There could be some irony in this - maybe what Oasis are trying to say is that they are the new generation of rebels in rock. (thanks, Alek - Nottingham, England)
  • Patrick Macnee, who played John Steed in the 1960s television series The Avengers, appears in the video. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Drummer Tony McCarroll, one of the founding members of Oasis, was asked to leave the band in 1995. Noel Gallagher told Q magazine June 2009 that the realization that McCarroll wasn't a good enough drummer came from his contribution to this song. He explained that "he couldn't even play in a straight line" the drum fill that goes into the last chorus.

    Days in the East Lyrics

    Days in the East
  • Drake shared the studio version of this slow, spacey love song on April 3, 2014 after previously debuting it live the previous month in Birmingham, England. Many believe it is directed at the Toronto MC's girlfriend Rihanna.
  • At the start of the breakdown there are background vocals sampled directly from Rihanna's single "Stay." The line "I threw my hands in the air, said, 'Show me something'" can be heard, further fueling the rumors that it is the Bajan singer on Drake's mind in this song.
  • The track finds Drake sipping tea with Erykah Badu where they, "talked about love and what life could really be for me." The neo soul songstress is a friend of the Toronto MC. In one instance she tweeted encouragement to him to respond to Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse where he challenged Drake and other hip-hop's big guns to raise their game. In 2015, Badu released a popular cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling."
  • The song was produced by frequent collaborator Noah "40" Shebib and October's Very Own label roster member, PartyNextDoor,
