Bye Bye Love Lyrics

Bye Bye Love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry-y
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could di-ie
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

There goes my baby with-a someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby till he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry-y
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could di-ie
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

I'm-a through with romance, I'm a-through with love
I'm through with a'countin' the stars above
And here's the reason that I'm so free
My lovin' baby is through with me

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness, hello loneliness
I think I'm-a gonna cry-y
Bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness
I feel like I could di-ie
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

Bye bye my love goodby-eye
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

Bye bye my love goodby-eye

Bye Bye Love
  • About 30 other artists had previously rejected this song before The Everly Brothers recorded it. It became their first hit in both the UK and US.
  • The husband-and-wife songwriting team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant wrote this. Together, this talented couple penned many huge hits for the Everly Brothers and other artists, including "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream." The Bryants are credited with being the first songwriters to come to Nashville and make a living only by writing songs. See a photo and learn more about them in Song Images .
  • This was a favorite of Simon & Garfunkel, who included it on their classic Bridge Over Troubled Water album. Paul Simon tells the story about how when he and Art Garfunkel were kids, they took a bus to the nearest record store so they could buy the single, and it became a staple of their shows when they started performing. It was always a fun song for them to play, especially when the audience would supply the backbeat. For their Bridge Over Troubled Water recording, they recorded audiences clapping from some of their shows to incorporate into the mix.
  • According to legend, the Everlys were nonplussed about the song but were appreciative of the $64 fee that both brothers received for the session.
  • In 1995, a movie called Bye Bye Love hit theaters. The film stars Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine and Randy Quaid as divorced men navigating a web of relationships. The song "Bye Bye Love" and a few other Everly Brothers tunes are featured in the film.

    Poor Pauline Lyrics

    Poor Pauline
  • "On a rope they dang-le her
then they choke and stran-gle her,
With an axe they man-gle her
    Always something new..."

No, this 1914 ditty is not a precursor to death metal. The poor Pauline alluded to was not so poor. At one time the actress who played her, Pearl White, was being paid $3,000 a week, an astronomical sum at a time when a brand new state of the art automobile cost less than $600.

The silent film The Perils Of Pauline (see a still) was released in the US on March 23, 1914; this song, in 2/4 time has lyrics by Charles R. McCarron and music by Raymond Walker. The sheet music was copyright 1914 by Broadway Music Corporation.

The Perils Of Pauline was a classic damsel in distress serial with the heroine facing a seemingly endless series of perils in cliffhanger endings. Pearl White performed many of her own stunts in her relatively short but spectacular career, and this is believed to have led to her death at aged just 49. She suffered chronic pain from the inevitable injuries, and this led first to alcoholism and then to drug addiction. (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

    Hello
    Can you hear me
Am I getting through to you

    Hello
    Is it late there
Is there laughter on the line
Are you sure you're there alone
    'Cause I'm
    Trying to explain
    Something's wrong
You just don't sound the same

    Why don't you
    Why don't you
    Go outside
    Go outside

    Kiss The Rain
    Whenever you need me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever I'm gone too long
If your lips feel lonely and thirsty
    Kiss the rain
    And wait for the dawn
    Keep in mind
    We're under the same sky
    And the night's
As empty for me as for you
    If you feel
    You can't wait till morning
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain

    Hello
    Do you miss me
I hear you say you do
But not the way I'm missing you

    What's new
    How's the weather
Is it stormy where you are
You sound so close but it feels like you're so far
    Oh would it mean anything
    If you knew
    What I'm left imagining
    In my mind
    In my mind
    Would you go
    Would you go

    Kiss the rain

    As you fall
    Over me
    Think of me
    Think of me
    Think of me
    Only me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever you need me
    Kiss the rain
    Whenever I'm gone too long
    If your lips
    Feel hungry and tempted
    Kiss the rain
    And wait for the dawn
    Keep in mind
    We're under the same sky
    And the night's
As empty for me as for you
If you feel you can't wait till morning
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain
    Kiss the rain

    (Kiss the rain)
    (Kiss the rain)
    (Kiss the rain)

    Kiss The Rain
  • Desmond Child, who produced the album, got the idea for the title after hearing the Bush song "Glycerine" on the radio. Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale has a thick accent, and Desmond thought he was singing "Kiss The Rain." When he found out he wasn't, he decided to use "Kiss The Rain" for a song he was working on with Myers.
  • Child and Myers wrote this with Eric Bazilian, another successful songwriter/producer. Says Bazilian, "I think it's sort of based on all of our experiences. That's the thing, you sort of get to a common ground area where you draw on shared experiences, common experiences."
  • Bazilian: "I was at a songwriting camp at a castle in France - Miles Copeland used to do these things. That's where I met Desmond Child. I'd spoken to him a few times before, but we'd never actually met. He would tell me about this artist he was working with, sort of developing and writing with named Billie Myers. He was trying to convince me to stop in London on my way back to the United States with him to meet her and write a song. He told me he wanted to write a song called "Kiss The Rain," and we started writing it. At that point, I just had to go with him to London, so we got a small conference room at the Halcyon hotel in London. I had my Roland VS-880 workstation with me, which was a brand new thing at the time. I had just gotten it and was figuring out how to use it, and we recorded a demo on that, most of which is the record. The guitars were played that day, the keyboards, most of her vocals are all on that record."
  • Desmond Child has also worked with Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Joan Jett. Eric Bazilian is a founding member of The Hooters and worked on the debut albums for both Cyndi Lauper and Joan Osborne. They both worked with Ricky Martin on his song "Private Emotion." (Thanks to Eric for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out his website at www.ericbazilian.com)
  • This song helped earn Myers a spot on the Lilith Fair the next year, which was a tour featuring female singer/songwriters like Sarah McLachlan and Tracy Chapman. Myers' unusual sound earned her a lot of fans, but so far this is her only hit.

  • Written by Frank Loesser, this is the first song in the 1947 comedy The Perils Of Pauline which is based on the life of actress Pearl White. It is performed by Betty Hutton as the starstruck Pearl in a sweatshop. The theme of the song is that unless she gets out of there, the sewing machine will drive her nuts. St. Teresa Lyrics

Sit down on the corner just a little crime
When I make my money got to get my dime
Sit down with her baby wind is full of trash
She bold as the street light dark and sweet as hash
Way down in the hollow leavin' so soon
Oh St. Teresa higher than the moon
Reach down for the sweet stuff when she looks at me
I know any man sees you like I see
Follow down the side street movin' single file
    She say

That's where I'll hold you, sleeping like a child
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
Just what I've been needin', feel it rise in me
    She say

Every stone a story, like a rosary
Corner St. Teresa, just a little crime
When I make my money, got to get my dime
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
You called up in the sky
You called up in the clouds
Is there something you forgot to tell me

Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me
Show me my Teresa, feel it rise in me

    St. Teresa
  • This song is about a woman who is down on her luck and trying to support herself and her baby by making money as a prostitute. The song explores how a woman who is overlooked and discarded is still very human and complex.
  • Osborne wrote this with Eric Bazilian, Rob Hyman and Rick Chertoff - the team who produced and played on Cyndi Lauper's first album. Says Bazilian, "On 'St. Teresa,' Joan was responsible for the lion's share of the lyrics, but we all worked through them very meticulously to make sure they made sense. 'St. Teresa' was one that just poured out of her, that was great. 'Right Hand Man' was a similar thing."
  • Bazilian: "St. Teresa started its life as Allman Brothers style Blues, based around a sort of organ riff. It lived that way for a while. I think Joan came in with the verse melody and lyrics written around that type of song, and then at some point the mandolin riff came, but I was still playing it over a kind of Jazz/Waltz/Blues. We tried to cut the song that way and we could never really catch a groove on it, and then one day I said, 'Let me play this mandolin to a click track.' I turned on my sampler with a percussion bank in it and was looking for just a shaker or something I could use for the click. My finger ran into the top key, which happens to be that sample that starts the record. I played the mandolin to that. A very unique rhythmic structure was born."
  • This was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal, but lost to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." Morissette also beat out Osborne for Album Of The Year.
  • This was Osborne's second single. It followed up her hit "One Of Us," which was written by Bazilian. (Thanks to Eric Bazilian for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out www.ericbazilian.com.)

    100,000 Years
  • This song begins with a bass riff by Gene Simmons . He recalled the story of the song to Classic Rock magazine: "I read a book called 100,000 Years where 100,000 years ago we were visited by aliens," he said. "Also Einstein's theory of relativity. I was reading all kinds of space and time continuance stuff, and it was all swirling around my head."

"I showed this stuff to Paul (Stanley), and he's going: 'What's 100,000 years?' I said: 'Let's just try it.' And then Paul came up with some stuff and I added the riff."

    Down
  • Written by 311 lead singer Nick Hexum and DJ S. A. Martinez, this is a song for the fans (who were "down" with them) to thank them for being loyal before the band became successful, and also an expression of gratitude for their bandmates.

311 emerged from humble beginnings in Nebraska, and when their second major-label album, Grassroots, made the albums chart (at #193) and got some radio play, they knew it was going to work out for them. "There was momentum swelling," Hexum said in his Songfacts interview . "We knew we were blowing up, and it was strictly from a grassroots basis, and not from being media darlings or anything like that. It's a 'thank you' to both the band members and the fans."
  • This was a breakthrough single for 311, marking their first appearance on the Billboard Airplay chart (it wasn't released as a single, so it wasn't eligible for the Hot 100) and getting them on MTV. The song isn't typical pop fare, but it made an adventurous addition to many playlists looking to branch out from grunge, hip-hop and easy-going pop (we're talking about you, Hootie & The Blowfish).
  • 311 performed this on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on August 23, 1996. (thanks, Kiona - Huntsville, AL)
  • The music video, which makes liberal use of various fun-house effects, was directed by Josh Taft, who also did the Stone Temple Pilots vids for "Plush" and "Sex Type Thing."

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand.
    I would understand,
The angry boy, a bit too insane,
    Icing over a secret pain,
    You know you don't belong,
You're the first to fight, You're way too loud,
You're the flash of light, On a burial shroud,
    I know something's wrong,
Well everyone I know has got a reason, To say, put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,
    I would understand.
Well he's on the table, And he's gone to code,
And I do not think anyone knows,
    What they are doing here,
And your friends have left, You've been dismissed,
I never thought it would come to this, And I, I want you to know,
Everyone's got to face down the demons,
Maybe today, We can put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand,

  • In our 2015 interview with lead singer Stephan Jenkins , he described this song as "a noir about a guy who jumped off a bridge and killed himself because he was gay," adding, "It was really about bullying."
  • Stephan Jenkins said on the PBS show In The Mix: "It's not just a song about some guy offing himself. 'Jumper' is really about understanding. Everyone carries demons around, they carry some sort of scar around. The message of Jumper is that there comes a time when you have to put the past away." (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA)
  • Jenkins told us that this song has changed meaning over the years, as shifting attitudes toward gay rights and inclusion have made the song a celebration, in a way. "'Jumper' has become a really positive song," he said. "When I wrote it, I wrote it as a lament, and now I sing it as a sense of arrival and more exalted, so that one's definitely changed."
  • This song is used in a scene in the film Yes Man in which Carl sings and plays the guitar to this song to convince a man not to commit suicide. (thanks, Alec Thorp - Yorktown Heights, NY)

    Thrills in the Night Lyrics

Early morning, as she wakes from her sleep
9 to 5 is the day that she'll keep
Ties her hair up and her blouse buttoned tight
Gets her worked up as she waits for the night

All those people, tell me what would they say
If they knew her, how she hides it away
Locked inside, there's the start of a flame
And the feelings that she never will tame

Ooh as she's walking around like a mystery
Ooh there's a woman that nobody sees livin' inside

    [Chorus]
Thrills in the Night, far from the light, passion taking over
Prices she pays, all through the days, no one really knows her

In the evening when she takes to the street
She goes hunting with a body in heat
And desires she's kept hidden inside make her tingle
And she knows why she lies

Ooh as she's walking around like a mystery
Ooh there's a woman that nobody sees living inside

    [Chorus: x2]

See the stranger that she's pushing away
As she dresses for the start of a day
And desires she's kept hidden inside make her tingle
Yeah she knows why she lies

    45 Lyrics

Send away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
    One not simply, so absurd
In these times of doing what you're told
Keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man's heart?
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight

What ever happened to the young man's heart?
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

    Everyone's pointing their fingers
    Always condemning me
And nobody knows what I believe
    I believe!

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
And I'm swimming through the ashes of another life

    45
  • Many people think this is about suicide, but the song is actually about hope, to fight against the odds. Shinedown lead singer Brent Smith told Foundry Music: "I think a lot of people kind of take a literal sense because of the lyrics - but the song is basically about the day that you wake up and you look at yourself in the mirror and you finally decide that you want to try to become comfortable in your own skin, and realize that you're gonna have to make yourself happy before you're going to make anyone else happy. And basically, the 45 isn't an actual literal term for a gun, I used it as a metaphor for the world, the 45 is actually the world and what it hands you every day of your life. When you get up, it's a gift to be alive to begin with. A lot of different people, when I've talked about it, they said, 'Do you really honestly mean that?' And I'm like, 'Well, yeah.' Because I've been in that situation where I didn't know if I wanted to continue going on and I didn't know how to necessarily make myself comfortable with who I was, trying to find a way of learning more about myself. And you come from a dark place sometimes, and that's really the reality of the song. It's about overcoming and about moving forward. And it's basically about understanding that it's not always going to be good, but you really have no one to blame for yourself if you don't move forward. That's where the whole, 'Nobody knows what I believe,' comes from because we're all individuals. So that's really where it comes from, it's about moving on, really." (thanks, Justin - Franklin, VA)

    The Warehouse Life Lyrics

    The Warehouse Life
  • Richmond Fontaine songwriter Willy Vlautin lived in Reno in his twenties and many of his songs were inspired by his time in the Nevada city. This song is one of them. He told Uncut magazine: "I guess a lot of time I take a real life story and then make it much more dramatic. Like 'The Warehouse Life.' I used to work at a warehouse and me and this guy would get drunk on lunch break and he had a huge gambling problem. He had a bookie in Reno. If you have a bookie in Reno you're in a mess. But he didn't get beat up. He was threatened an awful lot, but his folks got him out of it." (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
