I Am A Rock Lyrics

A winter's day
In a deep and dark
December,
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I Am A Rock,
I am an island.

I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before,
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me,
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain,
And an island never cries.

I Am A Rock
  • This song is about a recluse locking himself away from the world. When he says, "I am a rock, I am an island," he means away from everything and everyone. It's far from autobiographical, as Paul Simon was doing his best to write a hit song with this effort, and didn't write it for himself. The use of the word "Rock" is interesting in that Simon considered himself a folk singer, and didn't associate himself with Rock music. In the vast majority of songs with the word "rock" in the lyrics, it is used to imply music or lifestyle, but for Simon, it was just a piece of stone. He did the same thing in 1973 for his song "Loves Me Like A Rock."
  • This song has one of more perplexing histories of recordings and releases. Written by Paul Simon before he hit it big as a musician, the song was offered to the duo Chad and Jeremy, who turned it down. Simon then recorded it himself for his UK solo album (released in America 1981) The Paul Simon Songbook, which was released in the UK in August, 1965. The single was issued in September but didn't chart despite a performance by Simon on the show Ready, Steady. Go!

Simon was going solo at this time because the Simon & Garfunkel 1964 debut album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. had stiffed, and the duo split up. Late in 1965, the producer Tom Wilson overdubbed and remixed a track from that album, "The Sound Of Silence," and it became a huge hit. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were summoned back to the studio, where they recorded the singles "I Am A Rock" and "Homeward Bound," which were included on their Sound of Silence album. These songs were recorded with producer Bob Johnston at one of the Columbia Records studios in New York City, and now released with a more contemporary sound, "I Am A Rock" became a hit for the duo.
  • In the UK, this was released three times in a one year span: first as the original Paul Simon single in 1965, then in the summer of 1966 it was released as an EP and again as a single. The song was very popular there in 1966, but the chart position suffered because the sales of the single were diluted by multiple releases.
  • The guitarist on the Simon & Garfunkel hit version of this song was Ralph Casale , who was a top session player in the '60s. He remembers organist Al Kooper and drummer Bobby Gregg - both associated with Bob Dylan - also performing on the song. Describing the sessions, Ralph told us: "The band was booked from 7:00 p.m. into the wee hours of the morning. I was given a lead sheet for 'I Am A Rock' with just chords and asked to play the electric twelve string guitar. The producer wanted a sound similar to the Byrds. It was important that session players became familiar with the current hits because many times producers describe the style they want by referring to well known groups. Paul Simon sang the figure he wanted me to play between verses and asked me to play it in thirds. The rest was left to me. 'Homeward Bound' was on that same date."

    Promised Land Lyrics

I left my home in Norfolk Virginia,
    California on my mind.
Straddled that Greyhound, rode him past Raleigh,
    On across Caroline.

Stopped in Charlotte and bypassed Rock Hill,
And we never was a minute late.
We was ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown,
    Rollin' 'cross the Georgia state.

We had motor trouble it turned into a struggle,
    Half way 'cross Alabam,
And that 'hound broke down and left us all stranded
    In downtown Birmingham.

Straight off, I bought me a through train ticket,
    Ridin' cross Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flier out of Birmingham
    Smoking into New Orleans.

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just help me get to Houston town.
There's people there who care a little 'bout me
And they won't let the poor boy down.

Sure as you're born, they bought me a silk suit,
    Put luggage in my hands,
And I woke up high over Albuquerque
On a jet to the Promised Land.

Workin' on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the Golden State,
The pilot told me in thirteen minutes
We'd be headin' in the terminal gate.

Swing low sweet chariot, come down easy
    Taxi to the terminal zone,
Cut your engines, cool your wings,
And let me make it to the telephone.

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia,
    Tidewater four ten O nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin'
And the poor boy's on the line.

    Who's Johnny
  • This song was written by the husband-and-wife team Peter and Ina Wolf for Short Circuit, a 1986 sci-fi comedy about an experimental military robot named Number 5 who goes on the run after a lightning strike gives him the gift of human intelligence. The music video follows the robot's trial, with El DeBarge singing on the witness stand and some of the movie's cast members in attendance, including Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg (well, a cardboard cutout of Guttenberg). The movie's producers loved this song so much that they wrote in a scene where Number 5 adopted the name "Johnny."
  • This was El DeBarge's first single after leaving his family's group, DeBarge, earlier that year. He was concerned that the song was too different from his usual work, but was encouraged to give it a shot because a film tie-in could bring positive publicity to his debut album. The song was his first and only #1 hit (on the US R&B Charts) as a solo artist.
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic spun this song into a Tonight Show-themed parody called "Here's Johnny," a reference to announcer Ed McMahon's famous introduction for former host Johnny Carson. It's featured on his 1986 album, Polka Party!.
  • Peter Wolf didn't even have to drag himself out of bed to write this song. "I wrote the song one morning, literally lying in bed. I woke up and I was toying with the idea and the whole thing was right there, chorus and all." he said in a Billboard interview. Peter also co-wrote Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" and Starship's "We Built This City," among other hits. He and his then-wife Ina collaborated on Kenny Loggins' "Playing With the Boys" for the movie Top Gun.

    This Corrosion
  • The Sisters of Mercy were a popular English goth band who did very well in the UK between 1984 and 1993. In 1985, tensions in the band led to their split, with bass player Craig Adams and guitarist Wayne Hussey leaving to form The Mission. The Sisters Of Mercy leader Andrew Eldritch re-formed the band in 1987, without Adams and Hussey. This song takes a stab at the departed pair, with lines like "Sing this corrosion to me" and "Selling the don't belong," indicating that Eldritch considered The Mission's sound to be a copy - or corrosive version - of The Sisters Of Mercy.

The Mission went on to have a successful chart career in the UK, with hit singles like "Wasteland," "Tower of Strength" and "Butterfly On A Wheel."
  • Eldritch wrote this in 1986, and was going to release it as a single from his band Sisterhood, but they waited a year and released it as The Sisters Of Mercy.
  • Jim Steinman produced this track. He used the 40-piece New York Choral Society to get a grand sound. Steinman worked on all of Meat Loaf's hits as well as "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" for Bonnie Tyler.
  • Eldritch described the track in a 1987 interview with Sounds magazine: "It's about the idiots, full of sound and fury, who stampede around this world signifying nothing. It's about people who sing about the revolution while selling it short, about people who sing about the corrosion of things while they themselves are falling apart. People who miss the point... It's also stupidly over-the-top bombastic, but rightly so."

    Did I have a dream?
Or did the dream have me?
    Did I have a dream?
Or did the dream have me?

Set off on a night-sea journey
    Without memory or desire
    Drifting through lost latitudes
With no compass and no chart

    Flying through hallucination
    Distant voices, signal fires
    Lighting up my unconscious
And the secret places of the heart

    Dream temporary madness
Dream a voice in the wilderness
    Dream unconscious revelations
The morning says, the answer is yes

    Did I have a dream?
Or did the dream have me?
    Did I have a dream?
Or did the dream have me?

    Floating through a darkened mirror
    Deep reflections in disguise
    Soaring through lost altitudes
    Without wonder, without fear

Symbols on a field of visions
Behind the curtain of sleeping eyes
    On the instant of waking
    Another world of dreams appears

    Dream temporary madness
Dream a walk in the wilderness
    Dream unconscious recreation
The morning says the answer is yes

    Dream temporary madness
Dream a voice in the wilderness
    Dream unconscious revelations
The morning says, the answer is yes

There was a group of about 5 or 6 songs that came from a two week period of just what I would consider the best jams Alex and I have ever had. • In a 1975 radio interview, Seger said: "'Lookin' Back' is a strange record. At that time there was a lot of political upheaval happening in the area. I felt that in '2+2,' and I felt it in 'Lookin Back.' And 'Looking Back' was basically written about all the people who wanted to retain the conservative ideas, as opposed to trying anything liberal or new. Plus it had a double meaning about the band, too, and the music that had gone down."

Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) Lyrics

Where were you when the world stopped turnin'
    That September day?
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Or workin' on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
    Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor,
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children, they lost their dear loved ones,
Pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out in pride for the red, white, and blue
And heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

I'm just a singer of simple songs.
I'm not a real political man.
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran.
But I know Jesus and I talk to God,
And I remember this from when I was young:
Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us
    And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turnin'
    That September day?
Teachin' a class full of innocent children
Or drivin' on some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor?
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened,
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages
And speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow,
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on ""I Love Lucy"" reruns?
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger,
Stand in line to give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your fam'ly,
Thank God you had somebody to love?

I'm just a singer of simple songs.
I'm not a real political man.
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran.

Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)
  • Written by Jackson in the wake of the September 11 attacks, this song was released on November 26, 2001 as the lead single from his Drive album. The track topped the Billboard Country charts and peaked at #28 on the Hot 100.
  • Jackson introduced the song at the Country Music Association's annual awards show on November 7, 2001. Speaking to The Boot in 2013, Jackson said that he perceives this tune to be his biggest-ever accomplishment. "I [recently] did a radio interview, and the guy was talking about being at the [CMA] Awards the night I sang 'Where Were You,'" he explained. "Even though that was a hard performance for me and an emotional time, I still get so many comments about that. Of all the awards, and all that kind of stuff, the music is still what I like. To be able to create a song that really affects people and makes a mark in the music industry, I would have to say that would be a highlight."
  • Jackson wrote the song on his own, with the idea coming to him at 4am in the morning. He explained to The Boot that the lyrics really "came out of nowhere." "It was just a gift," he said. "I got up and scribbled it down and put the melody down so I wouldn't forget it, and the next day I started piecing all those verses together, thoughts I had or visuals I had."

    Spooky
In the cool of the evening when ev'rything is gettin' kind of groovy,
I call you up and ask you if you want to go and meet and see a movie,
First you say no, you've got some plans for the night,
And then you stop, and say, "All right."
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you.

You always keep me guessin', I never seem to know what you are thinkin'.
And if a fella looks at you, it's for sure your little eye will be a-winkin'.
I get confused, 'cause I don't know where I stand,
And then you smile, and hold my hand.
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you.
    Spooky!

If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin',
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin' to be sayin'.
Just like a ghost, you've been a-hauntin' my dreams,
    So I'll propose, on Halloween.
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you.

    Just like a paper tiger
    Torn apart by idle hands
    Through the helter skelter morning
Fix yourself while you still can
    No more ashes to ashes
No more cinders from the sky
    All the laws of creation
Tell a dead man how to die

    O deserts down below us
    And storms up above
Like a stray dog gone defective

    Looking through a broken diamond
To make the past what it should be
Through the ruins and the weather
    Capsized boats in the sea

    O deserts down below us
    And storms up above
Like a stray dog gone defective
Like a paper tiger in the sun

We're just holding on to nothing

    Paper Tiger
  • Beck's father, orchestrator David Campbell, helped with the brass and string arrangements on this song and the rest of the album. Beck told NPR how they worked together. "I usually get some kind of keyboard and I'll play the basic voicings and we'll map it out," he said. "With strings, a lot of times I'll play or sing parts over the song, which we'll transcribe."

He added: "For 'Paper Tiger' there's a whole solo that the orchestra does; that was actually something I sang, and then we just transcribed it."
  • A paper tiger is a person or thing that seems strong or threatening, but is, in fact, feeble or ineffective. The expression arose from a Chinese saying applied by Chairman Mao in the 1950s to the USA. Beck sings of the paper tiger protagonist in this song as being, "torn apart by idle hands."

    Dibby Dibby Sound Lyrics

    Dibby Dibby Sound
  • This bass-laden carnival track samples the song "Dibby Dibby" by the Moombahton St. Louis producer Jay Fay. (Moombahton is a fusion genre of house music and reggaetón. The name was coined by American DJ and producer Dave Nada as a blend of Dutch house DJ Chuckie's track "Moombah" and reggaetón).

According to the press release, having decided that he wanted to give Jay Fay's original "Dibby Dibby" a carnival vibe, Fresh, "conducted exhaustive, encyclopedic research into traditional Brazilian drum beats to re-create an authentic carnival sound, re-playing and re-creating individual drum beats and sounds himself."
  • The song features additional vocals from the UK Garage legend Ms. Dynamite, who is best known for her 2002 Mercury Prize winning album, A Little Deeper. She also was a featured vocalist on Katy B's 2010 hit single, "Lights On."
  • The song's music video was directed by The Sacred Egg, who also worked with Breach on their clips for "Jack" and "Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)." The visual, which was shot in Middlesex, ends up with a house party featuring Fresh and Ms. Dynamite.
