How Long? Lyrics

How Long?
  • Many listeners believed that this was a love song. The truth is that is was about bass player Terry Comer working with other bands (he played briefly with The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver before returning to Ace). He didn't tell the members of Ace and they felt cheated.
  • Paul Carrack was the lead singer of Ace. He went on to sing for Squeeze and Mike And The Mechanics and had a solo hit with "Don't Shed a Tear."
  • This was Ace's only hit. They broke up in 1977.
  • The bass introduction is borrowed from "Traveling Song" by the British folk rock group Pentangle.
  • When singer-songwriter Paul Carrack appeared on the BBC Breakfast news programme on June 29, 2009 he was asked about the inspiration for this song. Rather than being about a two-timing lover it was, he said, about another band who were "trying to nick our bass player".
"How Long?" was one of the first songs he ever wrote and remains one of his biggest hits. It was released on the Anchor label, copyright 1974, backed by "Sniffin' About", and produced by John Anthony for Neptune Productions. It has been recorded many times since. Terry Comer, the bass player a rival band were trying to "nick", returned in time to play on the original recording.

Say It Like You Mean It Lyrics

Say It Like You Mean It
  • While Switchfoot were tracking songs for Fading West they were also trying to develop musical beds that could be useful for the accompanying documentary of the same title, which features a behind-the-scenes look at the band, and follows its members to their surfing destinations. Frontman Jon Foreman recalled on Land Of Broken Hearts : "After tracking the drums and bass for every potential song on the record, Tim (Foreman, bass) and Chad (Butler, drums) would spend a few minutes jamming, utilizing the tones that we had developed for the previous song. A few of these drum and bass grooves were useful for the movie- but one of them quickly became more important than just background music. 'Say It Like You Mean It' was directly inspired by one of these jam sessions. It felt like a perfect accompaniment to Rob Machado's surfing in Bali - aggressive and distinctly stylish with a bit of an exotic flair."
  • Chad Butler recalled on a Spotify track-by-track: "We were – we were sort of – Tim and I were sort of working out the rhythm for this in the studio and just sort of jamming on that idea – that main groove. The song sort of built from the ground up."
  • The song's lyrical element came from Jon Foreman's own inner dialogue. He explained: "I want to be the same person on and off-stage. I am drawn towards the people I meet who do what they say and say what they do. This type of living shows a purity of thought and action that is increasingly hard to find. I look at the talking heads and the politicians and I wonder whether their words in the spotlight and their lives behind closed doors match up. Talk is cheap- Life is hard. This is an indictment for me and everyone else in the spotlight: 'You say it like you mean it, but we still don't believe it.'"

    Sheela-Na-Gig Lyrics

I've been trying to show you over and over

Look at these my child-bearing hips
Look at these my ruby red ruby lips
Look at these my work strong arms and
You've got to see my bottle full of charm
I lay it all at your feet
You turn around and say back to me
    He said

    Sheela-Na-Gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist
    Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist

Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
Just like the first time, said he didn't care
Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
    Heard it before, no more
Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
Turn the corner, another one there
Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
    Heard it before
    He said

    Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist
    Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist

Put money in your idle hole
Put money in your idle hole

Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
Just like the first time, said he didn't care
Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
    Heard it before, no more
Gonna take my hips to a man who cares
Turn the corner, another one there
Gonna take my hips to a man who cares
    Heard it before
    He said

    Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist
    Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig
    You exhibitionist

Put money in your idle hole
Put money in your idle hole

He said "Wash your breasts, I don't want to be unclean"
He said "Please take those dirty pillows away from me"

    Sheela-Na-Gig
  • A sheela-na-gig is a carving of a naked woman holding her vagina open. They are to be found carved on old churches (yes, really!) in Great Britain and Ireland. So the lyric, "He said, 'Sheela-na-gig, sheela-na-gig, you exhibitionist!'" is exceedingly graphic.

    Slipping Away Lyrics

    Slipping Away
  • Jon Foreman (from Land Of Broken Hearts ): "Of all the mysteries of life, perhaps death is the strangest reality of the human experience. The cessation of a human being on the planet is almost impossible to come to terms with. Eyes no longer filled with light. Heart no longer beating. Hands cold. Breath gone. But beneath all of this, the question remains: where did my friend go? The room is vacant, the body abandoned."

"The memories are all that are left, the ghosts of a time passed. And in many ways, these memories represent the graveside tombstones of times that will never be ours again. We lay our flowers on the gravesides, we honor what has been with our present time. We can remember what has been, but we can never have these moments again."

"Indeed, where you come from is gone. 'Slipping Away' is a song about loss, and the memories that remain."
  • Drummer Chad Butler recalled on a Spotify track-by-track: "I remember the first time Jon played this song for me I fell in love instantly with the lyric 'waking up at four in the morning, before the sun comes up' – just the whole nostalgia of that and the idea that live is short, and don't let it slip away."

O Little Town Of Bethlehem Lyrics

Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above
While mortals sleep the angels keep their watch of wondering love
Oh morning stars together, proclaim thy holy birth.
And praises sing to God the king, and peace to men on earth.

Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

    O Little Town Of Bethlehem
  • On Christmas Eve 1865, a young minister stood on the hill overlooking Bethlehem where the shepherds had watched their flocks on the night Jesus was born. The impression of that starry night never left Phillips Brooks. Three years later he was asked to write a hymn for the children of his Philadelphia parish for their Christmas service. The words "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" were already in his mind. Brooks' church organist, Lewis Redner, set the words to music, declaring that the tune was "a gift from heaven." Brooks became an outstanding preacher and possibly the most highly esteemed American clergyman of his day.

    Let It Out Lyrics

    Keep, keep, keep
    Keep pushing this higher, oh
    I've been living uptight
    (Take it easy right now)
Like a moth to the fire, oh
    Like I'm losing this fight
    (Take it easy right now)

    From the day we're born
    We are scarred and torn
We've been scared to sing out loud

But we don't care no more
'Cause we know life is short
We don't care who hears us now
Breathe it in and Let It Out, oh

    Let it out, oh
(Breathe it in and) let it out, oh
    Let it out, oh

    Got, got, got
Got me walking on a wire, oh
    Got me shaking at night
    (Take it easy right now)
When my soul gets tired, oh
Feel like I'm losing that fight
    (Take it easy right now)

    From the day we're born
    We are scarred and torn
We've been scared to sing out loud

But we don't care no more
'Cause we know life is short
We don't care who hears us now
Breathe it in and let it out, oh

    Let it out, oh
(Breathe it in and) let it out, oh
    Let it out, oh

Yeah, come on, let it out

    Are you holding on?
Are you up against those ropes?
'Cause I know how it feels to lose hope
    Are you holding in?
Well come on, let it out, oh (take it easy)

Take a breath and let it out
(Take a breath and let it out)

    From the day we're born
    We are scarred and torn
We've been scared to sing out loud

But we don't care no more
'Cause we know life is short
We don't care who hears us now
Breathe it in and let it out

    Let it out, oh
    Let it out, oh
    Yeah, c'mon, let it out,
    Let it out, oh
    Let it out, oh

Breathe it in and let it out, oh
    Oh, oh, oh

    Let It Out
  • This song finds vocalist Jon Foreman reflecting on his love of singing. He explained on the Land Of Broken Hearts website : "I sing because of joy. For me the joy far outweighs the risk of failure. Joy is the motivation for my songs. Even in a song of anger, or mourning the loss of a friend- I find joy in expressing the isolated seas within me- bringing them to the surface with a melody or a word. Often the communal experience that exists when we play our songs live, finds its beginnings in lonely isolation."
  • Bassist Tim Foreman commented in a Spotify track-by-track: "This song is a party. It's just… you can't listen to it and not smile. I can't. It reminds me of summertime."

    The First Noel Lyrics

The First Noel, the angel did say,
    Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

They looked up and saw a star
    Shining in the the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew night to the northwest,
    O'er Bethlehem it took it's rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

    The First Noel
  • "The First Noel" ("The First Nowell") is a traditional English carol most likely from the 16th or 17th century, but possibly dating from as early as the 13th century. It appeared in Some Ancient Christmas Carols (1823) and Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (1833), edited by William Sandys.
  • The word Noel comes from the French word for "Christmas," from the Latin word natalis ("birthday").

    Saltwater Heart Lyrics

    Saltwater Heart
  • Drummer Chad Butler explained during a Spotify track-by-track: "'Saltwater Heart' came together in the magical island of Bali. We were traveling the world, chasing waves and songs and this song came together on the cliff overlooking the Indian ocean. It was inspired by the surroundings. This song is a reflection of that feeling of being on the edge of the earth."
  • Switchfoot vocalist Jon Foreman explained the song's meaning during a track-by-track on the Land Of Broken Hearts website : "'Saltwater' is a song about longing. On tour, I often feel brittle and thirsty for substance," he said. "Far from shore, far from home- the ink dries up, and the blood begins to clot. I begin to feel like a sojourner longing for home, wanting to be washed clean of the dust of travel. And yet there is a deeper longing. A spiritual longing that no physical location can give me- not even my hometown. 'Saltwater' is a song that is trying to speak to both of these longings at once: longings of my physical being and the longings of my soul."

    Silent Night
  • Halfway through December 1818, the church organ in St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, 11 miles north of Salzburg in what is now Austria, broke (a popular version of the story claims that mice had eaten out the bellows). The curate, 26-year-old Josef Mohr, realized it couldn't be repaired in time to provide music on Christmas Eve. He told his troubles to his friend, a headmaster and amateur composer named Franz Gruber, while giving him as a present a poem he had written two years earlier. Gruber was so taken by the rhythm of the poem that he set it to music, and on Christmas Eve there was music after all. Mohr played his guitar while the pair sang the song. It was the first public performance of "Stille Nacht" or as we know it "Silent Night."
  • It is believed that the carol has been translated into over 300 languages around the world, and it is one of the most popular carols of all time.
  • Bing Crosby's version became his best-seller of the 1930s.
  • Music licensing company PPL announced in December 2010 that this carol tops the list of Britain's "most recorded Christmas song of all time." Said Mike Dalby, Lead Reporting Analyst at PPL: "Silent Night is a beautiful carol which encapsulates the feeling of Christmas entirely. Everyone from punk band The Dickies right through to Sinead O'Connor has recorded it, which exemplifies just how much it resonates with all different types of artists."

According to PPL, Sinead O'Connor's 1991 recording was the most popular version of the carol in Britain.

    Among The Living Dead Lyrics

    Among The Living Dead
  • This song features the voice of Blind Guardian singer Hansi Kürsch, who also contributed backing vocals to some other Plagues of Babylon tracks. He also is a member of the side project Demons and Wizards along with Iced Earth mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer. Speaking with Metal Exiles , Schaffer explained how the collaboration happened: "Well the thing of it is, because we were in Germany, and literally like an hour and a half from Hansi's house it was pretty easy," he said. "That's different than doing something like Demons & Wizards where you have to get together, write songs, and I mean, Hansi came into the studio for one day. He got there around 2:00 in the afternoon, and he left at I think 10 or 11 that night. That's a whole different thing, coming in and singing parts that are already written, than getting together and writing songs...that's something that can take a couple months."

"I talked to Hansi while we were in Germany doing pre-production for the tracking and that was also pretty close to his house and he came to visit us and I played the song, 'Among the Living Dead' for him and I told him I would love for you to do a verse in this song," Schaffer continued. "He agreed, and said it would be cool, and of course he'd be up for that. And then a little bit later I mentioned to him that normally when I'm working in Indiana or Florida I have a group of backing vocalists that I can call upon to sing choir parts on the album, on the choruses. And being in Germany I was a stranger in a strange land, so I called Hansi and he said he'd be happy to help out and that he had a friend he could bring along too. So, that's how that worked out."
