We Are The Dead Lyrics

Something kind of hit me today
I looked at you and wondered if you saw things my way
People will hold us to blame
It hit me today, it hit me today

We're taking it hard all the time
Why don't we pass it by?
Just reply, you've changed your mind
We're fighting with the eyes of the blind
Taking it hard, taking it hard

Yet now
We feel that we are paper, choking on you nightly
They tell me "Son, we want you, be elusive, but don't walk far"
For we're breaking in the new boys, deceive your next of kin
For you're dancing where the dogs decay, defecating ecstasy
You're just an ally of the leecher
Locator for the virgin King, but I love you in your fuck-me pumps
And your nimble dress that trails
Oh, dress yourself, my urchin one, for I hear them on the rails
Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
We Are The Dead

One thing kind of touched me today
I looked at you and counted all the times we had laid
Pressing our love through the night
Knowing it's right, knowing it's right

Now I'm hoping some one will care
Living on the breath of a hope to be shared
Trusting on the sons of our love
That someone will care, someone will care

But now
We're today's scrambled creatures, locked in tomorrow's double feature
Heaven's on the pillow, its silence competes with hell
It's a twenty-four hour service, guaranteed to make you tell
And the streets are full of press men
Bent on getting hung and buried
And the legendary curtains are drawn 'round Baby Bankrupt
Who sucks you while you're sleeping
It's the theater of financiers
Count them, fifty 'round a table
White and dressed to kill

Oh caress yourself, my juicy
For my hands have all but withered
Oh dress yourself my urchin one, for I hear them on the stairs
Because of all we've seen, because of all we've said
We are the dead
We are the dead
We are the dead

We Are The Dead
  • This is based on a line from George Orwell's novel 1984 - "We are the dead" are the last words Winston Smith says to Julia before they are caught by the Thought Police. Bowie wrote the song for a musical adaptation of the book but failed to get authorization from the Orwell estate.
  • Marilyn Manson put this #1 on his list of "The Songs That Made Me" for a feature in Rolling Stone, explaining that it was a huge influence on his Antichrist Superstar album. "It felt like it was about the culture of Hollywood, the disgusting cannibalism," he said.

    Infalliable Lyrics

    Infalliable
  • This song finds Eddie Vedder singing of the ill-advised arrogance of modern humans and questioning whether we're really progressing as a culture. The singer told Rolling Stone he is pointing the finger mostly at America. "I wouldn't want to limit it to just our country," he said with a laugh. "But if you're a casting director, you'd say, 'Well, wow, this country certainly fits the part.' You know, we legalized gay marriage in the state of Washington at the same time we legalized pot, and it was a great reason to celebrate! But then, the Supreme Court made it more difficult for minorities and less fortunate people on the economic scale to vote. That was a huge step backward. We could've made two big strides forward. Instead, we're just, you know, prone, doing the splits."
  • Bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard wrote the song's music (the lyrics are Vedder's). "There's a lot going on in that track. It's three dimensional, you can really hear each instrument playing," Gossard, commented to Billboard magazine. "I think the melodies are so strong, the descending chords in the chorus and where Ed takes that vocally, it has this classic melody that is pretty instantaneous."

Her mans been gone, for nigh on a year

Her mans been gone, for nigh on a year
He was due home yesterday, but he ain't here
Down your street, your crying is a well known sound
Your street is very well known. throughout your town
Your town is very famous for the little girl
Whose crying can be heard all around the world
We have a remedy, you'll appreciate
No need to be so sad, he's only late
We'll bring you flowers and things
    Help pass your time
    We'll give him eagles wings
Then he can fly to you
La la la la la la
    La la la la la
La la la la la la
    La la la la la
La la la la la la
    La la la la la
La la la la la la
    La la la la la
    We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
    We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
    We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
    We have a remedy
Fa la la la la la la
    We have a remedy?
    We have!
    Little girl guide
Why don't you stop your crying
Here comes Ivor the dirty old sooty engine driver to make you feel all right
    Yeah, yeah!
My name is Ivor, I'm an engine driver
I know him well, I know why you feel blue
Just cause he's late, don't mean he'll never get through
He told me he loved you
    He ain't no liar, I ain't either
So let's have a smile for an old engine driver
Let's have a smile for an old engine driver
    Soon be home
    Soon be home
    We'll soon,
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
    Soon be home
    Soon be home oh yeah
    We'll soon,
We'll soon, soon, soon be home
    Soon be home
    Soon be home
    Dang, dang, dang, dang
    Dang, dang, dang, dang
    Cello, cello, cello, cello
    Cello, cello, cello, cello
    Cello, cello, cello, cello
    Cello, cello, cello, cello
    I can't believe it
    Do my eyes deceive me
Am I back in your arms
    Away from all harm
It's like a dream to be with you again
    Aw!
Can't believe that I'm with you again
Ba ba, bo bo ba ba, ba ba
I missed you and I must admit
I've kissed a few and once did sit
On Ivor the engine driver's lap
And later with him had a nap
    You are forgiven
    You are forgiven
    You are forgiven
    You are forgiven
    Know you're forgiven
    Come on baby, baby forgiven
    Know that you lied
    Know you're forgiven
Know that you made me cry
    Baby
    You are forgiven
    You know you're forgiven
    You're all forgiven!

A Quick One While He's Away
  • The Who had 10 minutes left to fill on the LP. Kit Lambert, The Who's manager, suggested to Pete Townshend that he write "something linear... perhaps a 10 minute song." Townshend responded by saying that rock songs are "2:50 by tradition!" Lambert then told Townshend that he should write a 10 minute story comprised of 2:50 songs.
  • The song was a "mini-opera," paving the way for the other mini-opera "Rael" and eventually full length rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia.
  • The plot of the story is simple. A girl is sad that her boyfriend is away. Her friends suggest that she take a substitute lover, Ivor The Engine Driver. When the boyfriend returns, she confesses her infidelity and is forgiven.
  • The Who performed this on the Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus, which was going to be a TV special. It never aired on television but it was released on VHS in 1996 and DVD in 2004. The Who's performance of this was included in The Kids Are Alright, a 1979 film about The Who.
  • According to legend, Rock And Roll Circus didn't air because the Rolling Stones felt that they were showed up by The Who. Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithful, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, and Mitch Mitchell all appeared on Rock And Roll Circus.
  • A live version of this song appears on Live At Leeds and the soundtrack for The Kids Are Alright.
  • The Who wanted to put Cellos on the track but Kit Lambert said they couldn't afford it. So they sang "cello, cello, cello, cello," where the Who thought they should go.
  • This was used in the Wes Anderson film Rushmore starring Jason Shwartzman and Bill Murray.

You can shine your shoes and wear a suit
You can comb your hair and look quite cute
You can hide your face behind a smile
    One thing you can't hide
    Is when you're Crippled Inside

You can wear a mask and paint your face
You can call yourself the human race
You can wear a collar and a tie
    One thing you can't hide
    Is when you're crippled inside

Well now you know that your
    Cat has nine lives
    Nine lives to itself
    But you only got one
    And a dog's life ain't fun
    Momma take a look outside

You can go to church and sing a hymn
You can judge me by the color of my skin
You can live a lie until you die
    One thing you can't hide
    Is when you're crippled inside

Well now you know that your
    Cat has nine lives
    Nine lives to itself
    But you only got one
    And a dog's life ain't fun

    Crippled Inside
  • Lennon wrote this for his 1971 Imagine album. The second track therein, it features Ted Turner of Wishbone Ash on acoustic guitar. Decades later - in a December 2012 trans-Atlantic phone call from Arizona - Turner told Geoff Dorsett of Portsmouth's 93.7 Express FM how this came about.

They had some mutual friends, and one night around 11pm he received a phone call as the band was recording the Pilgrimage album at Apple Studios. It was John Lennon who asked if he would like to play on a session. When?, asked Ted. Right at that moment! Andy Powell received the same invitation, but declined. Ted was picked up in a Rolls with Nicky Hopkins, and at the studio were George and Ringo, but not Paul. He laid down some acoustic rhythm guitar, and as this was the last session, afterwards they played back the entire album for the first time.

Think about the love inside the strength of heart
Think about the heroes saving life in the dark
    Climbing higher, through the fire
    Time was running out
Never knowing you weren't going to be coming down alive
But you still came back for me
You were strong and you Believed

Everything is going to be alright
Everything is going to be alright
Everything is going to be alright
    Be strong, believe
    (Be strong, believe)

Think about the chance I never had to say
Thank you for giving up your life that day
Never fearing, only hearing voices calling out
Let it all go, the life that you know
Just to bring them down alive
And you still came back for me
You were strong and you believed

Everything is going to be alright
Everything is going to be alright
Everything is going to be alright
    Be strong, believe

Want to hold my wife when I get home
Want to tell my kids they'll never know
How much I love to see them smile
Want to make a change right here, right now
Want to live a life like you somehow
To make your sacrifice worth while

  • At first it was believed this was a song dedicated to a fireman who saved the lead singer from a burning house, and in doing so lost his life. However it is simply a song to all the fireman who died during the September 11 terrorist attacks. It's written from the point of view of someone who was in one of the Twin Towers as it was burning down and was rescued by a fireman who died when he went back in to help more people.

    Elton's Song Lyrics

    Staring all alone
    And your grace and style
    Cut me to the bone
    With your razor blade smile
    I watched you playing pool
It's all around the school that I love you

    I love your gypsy hair
    And dark brown eyes
    Always unprepared
    For your pointed replies
    Cynical and lean
I lie awake and dream about you

    If you only knew
    What I'm going through
Time and again I get ashamed
    To say your name
It's hard to grin and bear
    When you're standing there
    My lips are dry
I catch your eye and look away

    Sitting in my room
    I've got it bad
    Crying for the moon
    They think I'm mad
    They say it isn't real
But I know what I feel and I love you

But I would give my life
For a single night beside you

    Elton's Song
  • As the title implies, this is a very personal song for Elton. Lyrics for most of Elton's songs come from Bernie Taupin, but this one had a lyric written by Tom Robinson, a British singer whose songs include "2-4-6-8 Motorway" and "(Sing If You're) Glad To Be Gay." Unlike Taupin, Robinson is gay, and wrote words that Elton could relate to on that level.

Elton was not yet public in his homosexuality (he would marry a woman in 1984), and the song is not gender-specific. Elton, however, heard it as a boy-meets-boy love song, and says it reminded him of a 1968 movie called If, which is set at a school for boys in England. "It was the first gay song that I actually recorded as a homosexual song," Elton told Rolling Stone.

All her toys wore out in black and her boys had too
She started to hate every nigger and Jew
Every Mexican that gave her lotta shit
Every homosexual and the idle rich

Flying over the dateline her hands turn red
Cause the days change at night change in an instant the days
Change at night change in an instant
    She had to leave

    Los Angeles
  • X was known for songs about the seedy side of Los Angeles, covering the shady characters and unsavory places instead of the glamourous side commonly portrayed in the media. This song is about a very racist person that feels compelled to leave the city for a less diverse environment. It's not about a real person, but a type of person X vocalist Exene Cervenka came across. Explaining how the song is not to be taken as an endorsement of this behavior, she told BAM in 1980: "'Los Angeles' is supposed to be this racist song. You wouldn't write, 'She hated every negro and other people too,' if you're being truthful about the character. You'd write, 'She hated every nigger and Jew,' because she didn't hate negroes she hated niggers. It's not a personal she. People don't understand. When you read a book, you don't think the narrator's the person who wrote the book. There's a separation."
  • The lead singer of X, John Doe, wrote this with Cervenka and sang lead on the track with her. He appeared as Julianne Moore's husband in the movie Boogie Nights.
  • Los Angeles was the first album X released, and it was on a small independent label called Slash. The album sold over 50,000 copies, which was excellent for a debut independent release, but the band was pretty much unknown outside of southern California. X put out one more album with Slash before signing with the major label Elektra for their third release, Under The Big Black Sun, which gave them a bigger marketing push and landed the album at #76 on the national charts. (Get much more on X in our interview with John Doe.)
  • Careful if you're near a mosh pit when this song comes on - there was a lot of slam dancing going on when X would perform this in the Los Angeles punk clubs like The Masque. The song stayed in their set even after they became much more popular and graduated to venues that held thousands of people instead of hundreds.

    What's My Name
  • This is the one writing credit that original guitarist Keith Levene got from The Clash on the first album. He claimed to "have a hand" in every song on the first album, but this is disputed by the rest of the band. Joe Strummer always claimed that Levene was too busy doing drugs (heroin and speed, allegedly) to rehearse and hence his subsequent sacking from the band.

Levene claims to have written most of the song with his fellow guitarist Mick Jones in May 1976, and showed it to Sex Pistols singer John Lydon (with whom he would later form the post-punk band Public Image Ltd.). Strummer however remembers that "the only parts the song had when it came was, 'What's my name?' That's all the song was. I put in a few verses to keep the choruses apart."

Judging by early live bootlegs from 1976 to mid 1977, the lyrics were still being worked out (an early version featured a chilling coda about breaking into a house with a flick-knife).
  • The final lyrics to "What's My Name" are a brutal look at rejection and domestic violence ("Dad got pissed, so I got clocked") and depersonalisation to such an extent that the narrator is literally asking "what's my name?" - he can't even join a ping-pong club ("I went to join the ping-pong club, sign on the door said 'all full up'").
  • A live favorite from the first Clash album, this is one of the most raw punk tracks from the set when played in a live context; others being "White Riot," "Janie Jones" and "I'm So Bored With The USA." As such, the song remained in the Clash live canon from 1976 till around 1980, before being revived with the rejigged lineup in 1984 with Paul Simonon inexplicably promoted to lead vocals.

The version on the From Here to Eternity live compilation is taken from a Camden show in July 1978 and is the same one as seen in the Rude Boy movie, featuring extensive overdubs from the original scratchy sound take.

    In A Lonely Place Lyrics

I heard it said somewhere that one day all good things come to an end.
I turn around to see you. And if I do or not, it all depends.
I was born the day I met you,
Lived a while when you loved me,
Died a little when we broke apart.
    Yesterday, it would have mattered.
Now today, it doesn't mean a thing.
All my hopes and dreams are shattered now.

I'm In A Lonely Place without you.
I'm in a lonely place without you.

I walk the streets alone at night sometimes and think about you.
I look as strangers pass, and wonder how I'll live without your love.
I was born the day I met you,
Lived a little when you loved me,
Died a little when we broke apart.
Suddenly, this world's no longer bright.
I'm alone and lonely every night.
Won't you bring back your love that's out of sight?

I'm in a lonely place without you.

  • The title was taken from a 1950 Humphrey Bogart movie directed by Nicholas Ray (the director of Rebel Without A Cause). In it, Bogart plays a screenwriter accused of murder. This inspires and then sours a romance with Gloria Graham, leading to dialog such as "I was born the day I met you" and "Yesterday that might have mattered, not it doesn't mean a thing," which was cut and pasted into the lyrics for the song.

    Wrong 'Em Boyo Lyrics

    Wrong 'Em Boyo
  • The song is most popularly known for its cover by the Punk band The Clash, on their 1979 London Calling album. The record was one of many on the jukebox in The Clash's original rehearsal space.

Bassist Paul Simonon in particular really loved the song, hence why the idea of a cover was mooted. The Clash jammed on a cover version with Bill Price in the London Calling sessions, and it became a Ska-influenced rave with an infectious skanking beat.
  • The song and lyrics are a take on the famous American myth of Stag 'O Lee, or Stagger Lee as he became in later variants.

The original song 'Stag O' Lee' revolves around the legend story of the murder of Billy Lyons by 'Stag' Lee Shelton. Both were small time criminals, and so the story goes, on Christmas day 1895, they were involved in a drunken altercation which involved Lyons stealing Shelton's stetson hat, with Shelton calmly shooting Lyons dead, retrieving his hat and leaving. He would later be arrested and imprisoned for the murder in 1897 and die in prison in 1912. At this point the story had turned into a popular American folk song: "Stag 'O Lee," or "Stagger Lee" (in what may amount to a case of Chinese whispers).
  • Many cover versions of the song exist down the years, including versions by Wilson Pickett, Ike and Tina Turner, James Brown, Prince Buster and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. "Wrong 'Em Boyo" was one of many songs written inspired by the original story, including a similar one by the Black Keys in 2001 called "Stack Shot Billy" (Stack A Lee being another misheard version of the original name).

Take a photograph, it'll be the last
Not a dollar or a crowd could ever keep me here
    I don't have a past, I just have a chance
Not a family or honest plea remains to say

    Rain, rain, go away
    Come again another day
All the world is waiting for the sun

Is it you I want, or just the notion of
A heart to wrap around so I can find my way around
Safe to say from here, you're getting closer now
We are never sad, cause we are not allowed to be

    Rain, rain, go away
    Come again another day
All the world is waiting for the sun

    Rain, rain, go away
    Come again another day
All the world is waiting for the sun

To lie here under you is all that I could ever do
To lie here under you is all

To lie here under you is all that I could ever do
To lie here under you is all

She says that he's perfect, how could I compare
She says I should find him and I'll know peace at last
If I ever find Jesus, I'm kickin' his ass

She showed me a picture, all I could do was stare
At that freak in his sandals with his long pretty hair
They must think that I'm stupid or I don't have a clue
Ill bet hes a commie, or ever worse yet a Jew

    [Chorus]

She's given up whiskey and takin' up wine
While she prays for his troubles, had forgot about mine
I'm a gonna get even, I can't handle the shame
Why last time we made love, she even called out his name

    [Chorus]

It coulda been Carlos or even Billy or Ted
But if I ever find Jesus
He's gonna wish he was dead, amen

    She Left Me for Jesus
  • A track from the Texas singer songwriter Hayes Carll's third album, he wrote "She Left Me for Jesus" with the guitarist Brian Keane. The song is about a libertine who loses his girl when she finds religion. At the end of the song, he even threatens to kill Jesus if he ever sees him, as he blames the son of God for stealing his girl.

"It's not aimed at anyone's religion," Carll said in our 2013 interview . "It's aimed at intolerance and poking fun at somebody who calls himself a Christian and yet would beat up Jesus if he walked into a bar right now. That was the idea behind it."
  • There were a few folks who didn't get the joke in this song, but most people were in on it. "We had a few random threats and I've had people that didn't take it well, that didn't get it," Carll told us. "Jerry Falwell's son, I think, wrote something about it. But I've had countless ministers and rabbis come up to me and say, 'I'm a minister and the song's hilarious to me.'"
