    Provider Lyrics

When the first men on the ground were laid
I wouldn’t fall under the mad skirts
Onward forth into a land of gold
Swords were drawn upon the road

    Provider, carry on
    Far from the golden age
Follow me down a fox hole in the ground
    Don’t delay

    Come morning, miles along
    Gathered round, those remained
With and a cry for the land
    Joy to gain

Winter came and I was old and alone
Time set’s gone under the mad skirts
Onward further to a land unknown
With only hope of the sea’s ago

    Provider, carry on
    Far from the golden age
Follow me down a fox hole in the ground
    Don’t delay

    Provider, carry on
    Far from the golden age
Follow me down a fox hole in the ground
    Don’t delay

    Come morning, miles along
    Gathered round, those remained
With and a cry for the land
    Joy to gain

    Provider
  • In late 2012 Midlake's vocalist and chief songwriter Tom Smith announced that he was leaving the band. This song acts as a farewell. "'Provider' is about Tim, and my feelings towards him," guitarist and new singer Eric Pulido told The Independent. "It basically says to carry on, and that still I'm going to defend you and protect you. Even though I don't necessarily agree, I still love you, and support what you want to do. What I hoped was that it was a loving send-off."

    Leave Lyrics

    I've informed you to Leave
'Cause I can't afford to lose more sleep
I get ill when I get tired
So I'll try to rest if you'll stand guard

    [Chorus]
Do do do do do do do do whoa
Do do do do do do do

    I've informed you to leave
'Cause I can't stand to hear you breathe
I chew up and I choke down
The scraps you choose to leave around

    [Chorus]

Apparitions still won't leave me alone
It's as if you never left
How am I supposed to remember you
When you won't let me forget?

    I've informed you to leave
'Cause I can't afford to lose more sleep
There's your shoes, and there's the door
    Please don't come here anymore

    [Chorus]

    Happily Lyrics

You don't understand, you don't understand
What you do to me when you hold his hand
We were meant to be but a twist of fate
Made it so you had to walk away

    'Cause we're on fire
    We are on fire
    We're on fire now
    Yeah, we're on fire
    We are on fire
    We're on fire now

I don't care what people say when we're together
You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep
I just want it to be you and I forever
    I know you wanna leave
So c'mon baby be with me
    So Happily

It's four a.m. and I know that you're with him
I wonder if he knows that I touched your skin
And if he feels my traces in your hair
Sorry, love, but I don't really care

    'Cause we're on fire
    We are on fire
    We're on fire now
    Yeah, we're on fire
    We are on fire
    We're on fire now

I don't care what people say when we're together
You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep
I just want it to be you and I forever
    I know you wanna leave
So c'mon baby be with me
    So happily

    So happily
    One, two, three, four!

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
    We're on fire now
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
We're on fire now (we're on fire)
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
    We're on fire now

I don't care what people say when we're together
You know I wanna be the one to hold you when you sleep
I just want it to be you and I forever

    Happily
  • Harry Styles co-wrote this folksy Mumford & Sons influenced track with Savan Kotecha and Carl Falk. Kotecha and Falk, together with Rami Yacoub, penned many of One Direction's early hits including "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young," but this was the only song they contributed to on Midnight Memories.
  • Speaking to E! News, Harry said that he drew inspiration from his own life when penning lyrics for Midnight Memories. "When you're writing songs, it's impossible to not draw on personal experiences, whether it be, you know, traveling or girls or anything," he admitted. "That's the amazing thing about music, there's a song for every emotion. Can you imagine a world with no music? It would suck."

    Things Goin' On Lyrics

Well, have you ever lived down in the ghetto?
Have you ever felt the cold wind blow?
Well, if you don't know what I mean
Won't you stand up and scream?
'Cause there's Things Goin' On that you don't know

Too many lives they've spent across the ocean
Too much money been spent upon the moon
Well, until they make it right
I hope they never sleep at night
    They better make some changes
    And do it soon

Well, they're goin ruin the air we breathe
    Lord have mercy
They're gonna ruin us all, by and by
    I'm telling all you beware
I don't think they really care
I think they just sit up there
    And just get high

Well, have you ever lived down in the ghetto?
Have you ever felt the cold wind blow?
Well, if you don't know what I mean
Won't you stand up and scream?
'Cause there's things goin' on that you don't know

    Things Goin' On
  • This is Ronnie Van Zant's protest song. Instead of writing from the perspective of the war, it is written from the perspective of the government.
  • An acoustic version of this song is featured on the album Endangered Species sung by Johnny Van Zant.
  • This song, track one, side two, of their debut album (pronounced 'l?h-'nérd 'skin-'nérd), was part of Lynyrd Skynyrd's initial audition tapes. Then-producer Al Kooper brought them all into the studio to record every original song they knew to live-to-two-track, so he could then pick and choose from that to make the first album. However, it turned out that all 14 songs were top-notch, so Kooper used everything that didn't go on the first album for either B-sides for single's releases or on later albums.
Kooper's initial work with the band was sometimes a power struggle. In his memoir, Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards , Kooper mentions how they broke in Billy Powell, a keyboardist with training in classical music. While the classical music training gave him a rich, textured sound, he tended to play too much with his left hand, drowning out the guitars. Kooper got so frustrated trying to break him of this habit that he took to tying Powell's left hand to the piano bench during takes!

    Through The Dark Lyrics

You tell me that you're sad and lost your way
You tell me that your tears are here to stay
But I know you're only hiding
And I just wanna see you

You tell me that you're hurt and you're in pain
And I can see your head is held in shame,
But I just wanna see you smile again
    See you smile again

    But don't burn out
Even if you scream and shout
    It'll come back to you
And I'll be here for you

Oh I will carry you over
Fire and water for your love
And I will hold you closer
Hope your heart is strong enough
When the night is coming down on you
We will find a way Through The Dark

I wish that I could take you to the stars
I'd never let you fall and break your heart
And if you wanna cry or fall apart
I'll be there to hold you

You tell me that you hurt, it's all in vain
But I can see your heart can love again
    And I remember you laughing
    So let's just laugh again

    But don't burn out
Even if you scream and shout
It'll come back to you, back to you

Oh I will carry you over
Fire and water for your love
And I will hold you closer
Hope your heart is strong enough
When the night is coming down on you
We will find a way through the dark

    And you don't need
    You don't need to worry
And you will see it's easy to be loved
I know you wanna be loved

Oh I will carry you over
Fire and water for your love

Oh I will carry you over
Fire and water for your love
And I will hold you closer
Hope your heart is strong enough
When the night is coming down on you
We will find a way through the dark

    Through The Dark
  • Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson co-penned this folk-style, drum-driven inspirational anthem with their frequent collaborator Jamie Scott along with Toby Smith, who was the keyboardist and co-songwriter for the British Pop-Funk band Jamiroquai from 1992 up to 2002.
  • The five One Direction members contributed lyrics to 12 of the 14 songs on the standard edition of Midnight Memories (and an additional three on the 18-track deluxe.) Louis Tomlinson has the most credits of the group, with nine. He told The Mail On Sunday's Weekend magazine about how his songwriting has developed. "At first it was really hard: you sit in a room with writers asking you about your love life and stuff like that, and they start to piece together a song," he said. "But you keep on doing it and we've written more and more."

"This album is definitely more rock, more of us," Louis continued. "Writing the songs ourselves – that's the thing that makes you start to feel you deserve to be where you are, not all the other crazy stuff. We do look at other bands – even people like Take That – and see what it was that made them. Whatever else, it's the songs that are going to last, so that's much more of a focus for us."
  • Louis explained to host Ryan Seacrest how instead of writing as a five piece, the group often splits up. "We often break off in pairs and that's kind of the way that we do it," he said. "It often gets a bit crowded if everyone's in the same room."

Was I Right Or Wrong Lyrics

Like a restless leaf in the autumn breeze,
    Once, I was a tumbleweed
Like a rolling stone, cold and all alone,
Livin' for the day my dream would come

Never cared for school or any golden rules
Papa used to always say I was a useless fool
So I left my home to show 'em they was wrong
And headed out on the road, singin' my songs

Then one sunny day, the man, he looked my way
And everything that I dreamed of, it was real
Money, girls, and cars and big long cigars
And I caught the first plane home so Papa would see

When I went home to show 'em they was wrong
All that I found was two tombstones
Somebody tell me, please, Was I Right Or Wrong?
Lord, it's such a sad song

At first I got lost, then I got found
But the ones that I loved were in the ground
Papa, I only wish you could see me now
Take a listen Papa, I learned how to play my guitar, superstar
    Play one for momma now

If there's any way that you can hear what I say
Papa, I never meant to do you wrong
All the money, girls, and cars,
And all the world's long cigars,
Papa, I just want you to know,
    They couldn't take your place

When I went home to show 'em they was wrong,
All that I found was two tombstones
Somebody tell me please, was I right or wrong?
Lord, it's such a sad song
At first I got lost, then I got found
But the ones that I loved were in the ground

    Was I Right Or Wrong
  • When Lynyrd Skynyrd started out, they recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, where they recorded an album in 1972 that contained this song. According to Roger Hawkins and David Hood, who were part of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, no record company would pick up the album because the demo reel with the album somehow got flipped when it left the studio, and when Skynyd's manager played it for record executives, it sounded muffled. The band ended up recording a new version of their album in Georgia with Al Kooper, which became their 1973 debut Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. "Was I Right Or Wrong" didn't appear until 1978 when the album Skynyrd's First and... Last, which contained their original Muscle Shoals recordings.
  • When the album Second Helping was re-released, this was added to the album.
  • The song is about leaving home to follow your dreams only to return to a family that is deceased. It is not a reference to Ronnie's father, Lacy Van Zant, who is often referred to as the "Father of Southern Rock."

    Stand Up Lyrics

From the moment I met you, everything changed
I knew I had to get you, whatever the pain
I had to take you and make you mine

I would walk through the desert
I would walk down the aisle
I would swim all the oceans just to see you smile
    Whatever it takes is fine

    So put your hands up
    Cause it's a Stand Up
And I won't be leaving 'til I finish stealing every piece of your heart
    Every piece of your heart

I know your hearts been broken
    But don't you give up
I'll be there, yeah I know it
    To fix you with love
It hurts me to think that you've ever cried

    So put your hands up
    Cause it's a stand up
And I won't be leaving 'til I finish stealing every piece of your heart
    Every piece of your heart
    So put your hands up
    Cause it's a stand up
And I won't be leaving 'til I finish stealing every piece of your heart

And I will steal us a car
And we will drive to the stars
I will give you the moon
It's the least I can do if you give me the chance

    So put your hands up
    Cause it's a stand up

    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
You can call me a thief
    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
But you should know your part
    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
    I'm only here
    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
    Because you stole my heart

    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
    So put your hands up
    (I'm a thief, I'm a thief)
    Cause it's a stand up
And I won't be leaving till I finish stealing every piece of your heart

    Stand Up
  • This song is a bonus track on the Limited Yearbook Edition of Up All Night. It was written by Roy Stride, who is the frontman of Scouting For Girls, a group who have clocked up several Top 10 hits in their native UK, including "Elvis Ain't Dead," "Heartbeat" and the chart-topping "This Ain't A Love Song."
  • Stride also had a song shortlisted for 1D's third album, Midnight Memories, but it didn't make the final cut. Asked how he approaches writing a track for the biggest boyband in the world, Stride told Digital Spy : "I used to think, 'Ah, let's write a song for a boyband,' whereas now I've just realised you've got to write a f---ing good song. To get on a One Direction album - every single songwriter in the world wants to get on it - you've just got to write an absolutely amazing song. I don't think about who it's for, I've just got to write something that is amazing."

    There was a boy
    A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
    Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
    But very wise was he

    And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
    Fools and kings
    This he said to me
The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return

The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return

    Writer/s: EDEN AHBEZ
Publisher: DAVID J. JANOWIAK D/B/A GOLDEN WORLD
Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind

    Nature Boy
  • This song was written by Eden Ahbez, one of the strangest songwriters of the pre-Hippie era. He was a beatnik poet, but more accurately a proto-Hippie, choosing to wear long hair, a full beard and long, white, flowing garments that promoted a Christ-like appearance. He lived in Griffith Park in Los Angeles and ate fruit, vegetables and nuts. Ahbez was born in Brooklyn in 1908, and he claimed to have been raised in an orphanage and to have crossed the US on foot 8 times before age 35. He moved to Los Angeles in the '40s, lived on 3 dollars a week, and lectured on Hollywood street corners about Oriental mysticism.
  • Ahbez implored Nat King Cole's manager to look at his manuscript of "Nature Boy." Cole recognized the Yiddish melody, liked the lyrics and added it to his act. It was well received so Cole decided to record it. One problem: Cole and Capitol Records could not find Ahbez in order to secure the publishing rights. Finally they located Ahbez, camped beneath the first L in the "Hollywood" sign.
  • Nat King Cole recorded one other Ahbez song - "Land of Love." Ahbez released his own album in 1960 called Eden's Island. He spent time with Brian Wilson before The Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds. Ahbez, his wife, Anna, and their son Zoma lived in Griffith Park with their bicycle, sleeping bags and a juicer. With their unusual lifestyle, the family became legendary.
  • According to his friend Joe Romersa, Ahbez wanted to correct the last lyric. He decided that "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return," was not really what he wanted to say, since to be loved in return is too much of a deal and has nothing to do with love. Ahbez said that the last line should be, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love, just to love, and be loved."
  • Paul McCartney told Mojo magazine October 2008 that "since I was a kid I'd always loved the melody and words of that song." He added: "The writer is one of these guys who came and went, a little bit of a hippy in his day. He wrote this rather strange little song when you look at the lyrics - it's rather gay! In a nice way."
  • This was the first song Nat King Cole recorded where he was credited as a solo artist. His previous recordings were as the King Cole Trio, where he was the piano player and lead vocalist. On "Nature Boy," he didn't play the piano, which to this point was considered his strong suit. It marked a turning point for Cole, who became known for vocal talents on songs with orchestral arrangements; his next two hits were in this style: "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young." Before Capitol Records signed Frank Sinatra, Cole was their biggest star.
  • David Bowie teamed up with Massive Attack to cover the song for the central theme in the Nicole Kidman movie Moulin Rouge.

They say we're young and we don't know
We won't find out until we grow
Well I don't know if all that's true
'Cause you got me, and baby I got you

    Babe
    I Got You Babe
    I got you babe

They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned, our money's all been spent
    I guess that's so, we don't have a plot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got

    Babe
    I got you babe
    I got you babe

I got flowers in the spring
I got you to wear my ring
    And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And if I get scared, you're always around

Don't let them say your hair's too long
'Cause I don't care, with you I can't go wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb

    Babe
    I got you babe
    I got you babe

I got you to hold my hand
    I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
    I got you, I won't let go
I got you to love me so

    I got you babe
    I got you babe

    I Got You Babe
  • Sonny Bono was an up-and-coming record producer when he got Cher a job with Phil Spector as a session singer. They started dating and moved in to their manager's house, where Bono would write songs on a piano in the garage. He came up with "I Got You Babe" and wrote the lyrics on a piece of cardboard.

Cher didn't like it at first. She recalled to Billboard magazine: "Sonny woke me up in the middle of the night to come in where the piano was, in the living room, and sing it. And I didn't like it and just said, 'OK, I'll sing it and then I'm going back to bed.'"

Sonny changed the key in the bridge to fit her voice and she loved it.
  • Depending on what side of the fence you stand, this is either a beautiful love song or pure schmaltz. To Sonny Bono, it was sincere - an earnest declaration of commitment and support. "The lyrics of my songs are very important to me," he told the New Musical Express in 1966. I never write anything until that very moment when I feel the emotion conveyed in the words I write. I know what it is like to be kicked around because you dress differently. I know what it is like to see the girl you love hurt because a hotel refuses you admission because of your dress. I know what it is like to have that one person stand by you. There are a lot of other people who have experienced these things and I'm trying to put our feelings into words for everyone."
  • Ahmet Ertegun, who was the boss at the duo's label Atco Records, didn't think much of this song, so he planned to issue it on the B-side of "It's Gonna Rain." Bono was sure "I Got You Babe" was the hit, but he couldn't convince Ertegun.

This was an era when disc jockeys could overrule record executives when it came to airplay, so Bono brought a copy of "I Got You Babe" to the Los Angeles radio station KHJ, and made a deal with their program director, Ron Jacobs. If Jacobs played the song once an hour, he could have it exclusively. When KHJ started playing it, the song got a great reaction, leading Ertegun to issue it as the A-side.
  • This isn't an anti-war song, but it went over well with the Hippie crowd because it stuck up for guys with long hair when Cher sang, "Let them say your hair's too long, I don't care, with you I can't go wrong."
  • In 1985, UB40 covered this with Chrissie Hynde doing the female vocals. Their version hit #1 in the UK and #28 in the US. Sonny & Cher's original version was the first record UB40's Ali Campbell ever owned.
  • In 1994 Cher re-recorded this with the cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead. This version hit #35 in the UK.
  • Bob Dylan's use of the word "Babe" in his 1964 song "It Ain't Me Babe" gave Sonny Bono the idea to use it in this song.
  • In the 1993 film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, Murray's character is awakened to this song every morning at precisely 6:00 a.m. on the alarm clock in his hotel room.
  • Sonny and Cher performed this one last time when they appeared on the The David Letterman show in 1987. They didn't expect to sing, but the host cajoled them until they did song. Sonny and Cher put their differences aside and did a touching performance.
  • Sonny Bono is the only person to perform on a #1 hit and also serve in congress. He was elected to California's 44th district in 1994, and served there until his death.

No More Hell To Pay Lyrics

    No More Hell To Pay
  • This is the title track of Stryper's ninth studio album, which was a play-off their best-selling To Hell with the Devil set. Frontman Michael Sweet explained to Metal Exiles : "We wanted to kind of come back to our strongest album and make an album that would rival that and even hopefully surpass it. So that's what we thought when we were making the album. Same thing with the artwork and the title, No More Hell To Pay."
  • Sweet explained the song and album title's meaning to Metal Exiles: "What it means is: If you put your faith in God, there is no more hell to pay, because he paid the price," he said. "If we call on him, and believe that he can help us through and get us through anything here on Earth, our own hell here on Earth, there is no more hell to pay. If we believe in Him that He died on the cross, as the Bible says, for our sins and that any man that believes in Him shall live eternally and have eternal life, and won't face hell, the hell that the Bible speaks of, there's no more hell to pay. So it's a real simple statement, but a real powerful statement as well."
