Midlake spent much of 2011 and 2012 painstakingly recording their fourth album at the farm in Buffalo, Texas where The Courage Of Others was tracked. However the perfectionism of frontman and songwriter Tim Smith was increasingly frustrating the rest of the group and in late 2012 he announced that he was leaving Midlake to form a new project called Harp. The question arose as to how would the remaining four members (Eric Pulido, McKenzie Smith, Paul Alexander and Eric Nichelson) manage without Smith's songs?

"Of what we'd recorded," Pulido told Mojo magazine, "Tim had said, 'You can have this…' but what we couldn't take with us turned out to be 75% of the recording." The solution was to begin again from scratch, and the quartet wrote and recorded a new full-length album in just six months. Pulido said that they titled it Antiphon, "because it means a response to an oratory or piece of music, and this album is a response to what's gone on with Tim. The original Antiphon was an orator in Ancient Greece who was part of an oligarchy that fought democracy. But we didn't overthrow Tim! He's not Antiphon."

Ride It

This was Halliwell's eagerly awaited comeback single after a break from the music business. Her record company arranged a great deal of publicity for its release; they had Geri ride on horseback wearing a basque to her gig at a top night club in London where she also danced on stage with a giant banana. The video also had Geri dancing with the infamous banana.

Sam Smith and Eg White wrote this song, which is about unrequited love. White's resumé also includes Will Young's Ivor Novello Award winning "Leave Right Now," James Morrison's UK Top 10 hit, "You Give Me Something" and Adele's international smash, "Chasing Pavements." It was the first tune that the pair penned together.

Smith wrote this song about a heartbreak when he fell for a guy who turned out to be straight, and thus not interested in his advances. Smith says he thought the guy was interested, so after more than a few drinks, he poured his heart out to him, only to be rejected.

Introducing this song at concerts during his first tour, Smith would often ask the audience, "Has anyone ever been in love with someone who doesn't love you back?"

The track that you hear on In the Lonely Hour is actually the demo version that Smith recorded for the album. He had tonsillitis on the day that he recorded it, and he loved the fact that the listener can hear that.

Scott Stapp's slow suicide after Creed became one of the most successful bands in America included arrests for suspected intoxication in 2006 and for domestic abuse the following year. This song finds him explaining that his self-destructive behavior was down to his own ego. "Who I Am," Stapp stated, "is the first composition in which I embody a character. That character is pure unadulterated ego. Unchecked, ego can take you down as quickly as the deadliest drug. When stardom came my way, I tripped out on ego. I OD'd on ego. And on this record I wanted to expose ego for what it is; I wanted to give ego a voice; I wanted ego to unleash its rage and express its need to possess my soul. Stapp now sees it a life-altering moment. "Rationally, I should have been dead," he said. Randy Newman was asked to write a song about Los Angeles as a theme to the 1984 Olympics, which were held there. Instead, he wrote a tongue-in-cheek "homage" to the car-cruising, sun-worshipping LA culture, complete with mentions of a "Big nasty redhead" and a "Bum down on his knees." LA officials didn't think this was the image they wanted, but Newman released the song anyway. Despite the unsavory references to the city, the song became an anthem for Los Angeles, as most people didn't listen far beyond the chorus. This is typical of Newman's songwriting; he often writes lyrics that mean more than what's on the surface. "I don't want to sing everything out of the side of my mouth," he once said.

Randy Newman's cousin, Tim Newman, directed the video. Tim had lots of experience directing commercials, but had never done a music video. For most of the video, we see Randy driving around Los Angeles, taking in the beautiful sights along the way. Tim said it was the most fun he ever had at his job.

For a while this was the adopted theme song for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team. It is also played after every LA Dodgers home victory.
