Supersymmetry Lyrics

I know you're living in my mind
It's not the same as being alive
I know you're living in my mind
It's not the same as being alive

Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

If telling the truth is not polite
Then I guess you'll have to fight
If telling the truth is not polite
Then I guess we'll have to fight

Supersymmetry

Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

I lived for a year, in the bed by the window
Reading books, better than memories
Wanna feel the seasons passing
Wanna feel the spring

Of supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry
Supersymmetry

It's been a while since I've been to see you
I don't know where, but you're not with me
Heard a voice, like an echo
But it came from you

Supersymmetry

Ah, lalala lala

Supersymmetry
  • This epic synth-driven meditation on mortality is a duet between vocalist Win Butler and his wife, Régine Chassagne. It reaches its peak with the help of strings from old collaborators Owen Pallet and former bandmate Sarah Neufeld. Bassist Tim Kingsbury told The Sun that the band had let the tune go by the wayside, but producer James Murphy persuaded them to complete it. "It was this super loose, open jam, a drifting electronic song, but he said we had to keep it on the record," he said.
  • This was originally written for the Spike Jonze film Her, but was reworked for Reflektor. A variation of the song can be heard weaving in and out of the track, "Morning Talk/Supersymmetry," on the Her score.

    Eclipse Lyrics

    All that you touch
    All that you see
    All that you taste
    All you feel
    All that you love
    All that you hate
    All you distrust
    All you save
    All that you give
    All that you deal
    All that you buy
    Beg, borrow or steal
    All you create
    All you destroy
    All that you do
    All that you say
    All that you eat
    And everyone you meet
    All that you slight
    And everyone you fight
    All that is now
    All that is gone
    All that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is Eclipsed by the moon

  • The closing track on Pink Floyd's famous Dark Side of the Moon album, this seamlessly follows "Brain Damage" to close it out - radio stations almost always played the songs together. The album was well into production but didn't have an ending until Roger Waters came up with the song. It reprises some lyrics to the opening track "Breathe" ("All that you touch, all that you see") before closing out the album with the words, "There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

This closing statement is the voice of Gerry O'Driscoll (often misspelled "Jerry Driscoll"), who was the doorman at Abby Road studios, where the album was recorded. His is one of many random voices that show up throughout the album; Waters recorded people around the studios, looking for spontaneous thoughts, and Driscoll, with his sincere delivery and Irish accent, made the finished piece. He can also be heard on the track "The Great Gig In The Sky" (the line that begins, "I am not frightened of dying...").
  • Dave Gilmour recalled to Rolling Stone in 2011: "I remember working hard on making it build and adding harmonies that join in as you go through the song. Because there's nothing to it - there's no chorus, there's no middle eight, there's just a straight list. So, every four lines we'll do something different."
  • The working title for the Dark Side of the Moon album was "Eclipse: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics." They began working on it during rehearsals for their concerts, and performed early versions live during shows in 1972. This was an era when bands could spend a year refining songs by playing them at concerts before heading into the studio. These days, any such performance would be quickly recorded and distributed.
  • If you put on your headphones, turn down the bass and listen carefully to the right channel at the end of this song, you can hear what sounds like "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles in a Muzak-style while you are still hearing the beating of the heart. No one in the Pink Floyd camp has talked about this as far as we can tell, which gave the many owners of the album yet another talking point.
  • Dave Gilmour told Guitar World February 1993 about Chris Thomas' role on the album: "Chris Thomas came in for the mixes, and his role was essentially to stop the arguments between me and Roger about how it should be mixed. I wanted Dark Side to be big and swampy and wet, with reverbs and things like that. And Roger was very keen on it being a very dry album. I think he was influenced a lot by John Lennon's first solo album [Plastic Ono Band], which was very dry. We argued so much that it was suggested we get a third opinion. We were going to leave Chris to mix it on his own, with Alan Parsons engineering. And of course on the first day I found out that Roger sneaked in there. So the second day I sneaked in there. And from then on, we both sat right at Chris's shoulder, interfering. But luckily, Chris was more sympathetic to my point of view than he was to Roger's."
  • The heartbeat on this song brings Dark Side of the Moon full circle, closing the album the same way it opens: with the heartbeat heard on the opening track "Speak To Me." The heartbeat is actually a kick drum processed to sound like a pulse.

  • Khaled opens his Suffering From Success album with a familiar voice as we hear President Barack Obama say: "Thank you everybody. How you like my new entrance music?" The audio clip was taken from the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April 2013. "I just wanted to start the album when Obama came out with 'All I Do Is Win' and saying that's his new theme song — I mean that's the biggest voice in America and he's saying a DJ Khaled record is his theme song," Khaled told MTV News. "I'm starting off the album like, 'Helloooo, have you got it yet?' I'm the best in the game."

Untitled (How Could This Happen To Me) Lyrics

    I open my eyes
I try to see but I'm blinded by the white light
    I can't remember how, I can't remember why
    I'm lying here tonight

And I can't stand the pain
And I can't make it go away
No, I can't stand the pain

How could this happen to me? I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life
I just wanna scream, how could this happen to me?

    Everybody's screaming
I try to make a sound but no one hears me
I'm slipping off the edge, I'm hanging by a thread
I wanna start this over again

So I try to hold onto a time when nothing mattered
And I can't explain what happened
And I can't erase the things that I've done
    No I can't

How could this happen to me? I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life
I just wanna scream, how could this happen to me?

    I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life
I just wanna scream, how could this happen to me?
How could this happen to me?
How could this happen to me?

  • This song was written about people who died in accidents due to drunk drivers and the heartbreak that people experience due to the death of their friends. It talks about how you can sometimes feel at fault for things that happen.
  • The video for this song, which supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving, portrays an accident caused by a drunk driver.
  • When the album was released, this was originally a bonus track called "Untitled." When it got some radio play, the subtitle "How Can This Happen To Me" was added.

    Who Are You Lyrics

    Monday you sent me flowers
    Tuesday made me feel stupid
    Wednesday the world was ours
    Thursday you didn’t prove it
    Friday fell back in love
    Saturday we didn't talk
Sunday you said you needed space

Do you miss me? Am I crazy?
Am I losing hold of your love baby?
Either you want me or you don't
I need to know, I need to know

    Who Are You today?
    Will you be the sun
    Or the pouring rain?
    Who are you tomorrow?
    Will you make me smile
    Or just bring me sorrow?
    Who are you gonna be
When I'm lost and I'm scared?
    Who are you gonna be
    When there's nobody there?
    Who are you today?
'Cause I am still the same

    Monday you had my heart
    Tuesday you had me screaming
    Wednesday we didn't part
    Thursday you didn't mean it
    Friday I shook it off
    Saturday you got it wrong
Sunday I said I needed space

Do you miss me? Am I crazy?
Am I losing hold of your love baby?
Either you want me or you don't
I need to know, I need to know

    Who are you today?
    Will you be the sun
    Or the pouring rain?
    Who are you tomorrow?
    Will you make me smile
    Or just bring me sorrow?
    Who are you gonna be
When I'm lost and I'm scared?
    Who are you gonna be
    When there's nobody there?
    Who are you today?
'Cause I am still the same

Who are you? Who are you?

It's so strange how the same thing
Can make you feel so right
And bring you so much pain.
It's so strange how the same face
Can you make you love until it hurts.
Where do we go? (where do we go?)
I need to know (I need to know)

    Who are you today? (today)
    Will you be the sun
Or the pouring rain? (the pouring rain)
    Who are you tomorrow?
    Will you make me smile

    Who Are You
  • This emotional ballad is a track from Better Together, the debut EP by Fifth Harmony. Dinah Jane Hansen recalled the laying down of the Julian Bunetta produced track to MTV News. "We all came into the studio separately recording it," she said. "And then when Julian put the finishing touches to it and we all heard it, the first time we heard it we were all sobbing, and then we knew that's the one."
  • Camila Cabello explained the song's meaning: "It's a subject matter though that isn't really... It's not a generic subject matter," she said. "It's not a sad love song. It's not like boy doesn't like me back. It's like an actual bipolar relationship."

Modest Mouse - The View Lyrics

    Your gun went off.
Well you shot off your mouth and look where it got you.
    My mouth runs on too.

    Shouts from both sides,
"Well we've got the land but they've got the view!"
    Well now here's the clue.

    Life it rents us.
And yeah I hope it put plenty on you.
Well I hope mine did too.

As life gets longer, awful feels softer.
Well it feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
    Then I feel pretty blissfully.

    Your gun went off.
Well you shot off your mouth and look where it got you.
    My mouth runs on too.

    Shouts from both sides,
"Well we've got the land but they've got the view!"
    Well now here's the clue.

We are fixed right where we stand.

    Life it rents us.
And yeah I hope it put plenty on you.
Well I hope mine did too.

We are fixed right where we are.

As life gets longer, awful feels softer.
Well if feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
    Well I feel pretty blissfully.

For every invention made how much time did we save?
We're not much farther than we were in the cave.

As life gets longer, awful feels softer,
And it feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
    Well I feel pretty blissfully.

If life's not beautiful without the pain,
Well I'd just rather never ever even see beauty again.
Well as life gets longer, awful feels softer.
And it feels pretty soft to me.

For every good deed done there is a crime committed.
    We are fixed.
For every step ahead we could have just been seated.
    We are fixed.

As life gets longer, awful feels softer.
Well it feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
    Well I feel pretty blissfully.

  • The message of this song: Making mistakes and learning from them is part of life. You want something, you think it's great, but then realize that someone else has something better. Beauty is everywhere but painful experiences must be endured in order for one to feel that the beauty is really there. Life goes on, strife is endured, but in the end everything turns out how it is supposed to be.

Katy Perry - Legendary Lovers Lyrics

Under a silver moon, tropical temperature
I feel my lotus bloom, come closer
I want your energy, I want your aura
You are my destiny, my mantra

Never knew I could see something so clearly looking through my third eye
Never knew karma could be so rewarding and bring me to your life
Maybe this is the beginning of something so magical, tonight (oh, oh)

Take me down to the river
    Underneath the blood orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum

Legendary lovers, we could be legendary
Legendary lovers, we should be legendary

    Go down in history
Go down together, into infinity, forever
    You're Cleopatra
    You're blushing Juliet
Anything for your love, a ride or die

Never knew I could see something so clearly looking through my third eye
Never knew karma could be so rewarding and bring me to your life

    Legendary Lovers
  • This mystical love song finds Perry describing the eternal passion between herself and her beau as well as namechecking legendary lovers Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Shakespeare's tragic heroine, Juliet. She sings on the chorus:

"Take me down to the river
    Underneath the blood-orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum."

Perry penned the song in her hometown of Santa Barbara with her frequent collaborators, Bonnie McKee, Henry Walter, Max Martin and Dr. Luke.
  • The dreamy EDM-lite tune features Indian percussion and lyrics focusing on Eastern religious concepts such as infinity and karma. "I think that we had a lot of fun on 'Legendary Lovers,'" Bonnie McKee told MTV News. "I feel like I was able to pull a lot of imagery from really early [Eastern-influenced] stuff that I did [when I was a kid and young songwriter], and it was a lot of fun to get into the Bollywood sort of theme 'cause I know she's always had an obsession with that to. I think they're pretty classic themes that she goes over. When you're writing love songs, it's always forever; they seem to always last throughout time."

    Rockabye Baby Lyrics

    Rockabye Baby
  • Originally titled "Hush-a-bye Baby," this nursery rhyme was said to be the first poem written on American soil (according to 1904's Book Lover). There's no official record, however, that proves when the song was written. Some sources claim it was as early as the 1500s. It first appeared in print in Mother Goose's Melody in 1765 and contained a stern morality lesson in the footnote: "This may serve as a Warning to the Proud and Ambitious, who climb so high that they generally fall at last."
  • Several rumors exist about "Rock-a-bye Baby's" origin, none of which has been proven:

It was written by a pilgrim who sailed to America on the Mayflower. During this trip, the young passenger observed the way Native American women rocked their babies in birch-bark cradles suspended from the high branches of a tree, allowing the wind to rock the baby to sleep.

Effie Crockett, a relative of Davy Crockett, wrote the lyrics in 1872 while babysitting a restless child. (Indeed, Crockett - known as Effie I. Canning - has an IMDB filmography containing over 175 credits for the extensive use of "Rock-a-bye Baby" in film and television.)

It was inspired by an English family, the Kenyons, who lived in a vast tree house fashioned out of an ancient yew tree.

Author Gerald Massey ties the rhyme into Egyptian mythology in his book Ancient Egypt, claiming the baby is the god Horus.
  • Another legend finds the rhyme's origins steeped in the political climate prior to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The baby refers to the heir born to England's King James II. Supposedly written in an English pub, the original lyrics served as a death wish upon the newborn prince in hopes the empire would be overthrown.
  • Even though this song is supposed to be a lullaby with a tender melody, many claim it's violent and abusive. It starts out sweet and innocent with the gentle "Rock-a-bye Baby," but quickly turns to disaster with when the bough breaks and down comes baby, cradle and all.
  • The title "Rock-a-bye Baby" was used for a 1958 comedy starring Jerry Lewis as a TV repairman who agrees to care for his movie star sweetheart's triplets.
  • If you're looking for a version of this song where the baby doesn't meet its doom, Candice Night recorded a more comforting rendition for her 2015 album Starlight Starbright with her husband Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Her lyric becomes:

When that wind blows, there's nothing to fear
'Cause mommy and daddy will always be here

In our interview with Night , she said, "If you are a parent or caregiver you have absolutely every right - more than that, it should be your duty really - to do whatever you can do to comfort your child and let them know everything is all right. Even if it isn't... We all shoulder burdens and hide truths from our children so that they can retain their innocence. And the most vulnerable time for a child is right before bedtime. Why would anyone want to scare them at that moment?"

  • This song was influenced by Justin Timberlake. "I wrote it with that in mind," frontman Andy Brown told Digital Spy . "I've been listening to lots of Justin's new stuff like 'Suit & Tie', and I thought it would be great to do something a bit funkier."

"We wrote really fast actually," Brown added. We did it in a couple of hours with producer Matt Schwartz, who's worked with Kylie. It was really fun writing it and we were listening to 'Senorita' by Justin and Earth Wind & Fire and stuff like that, so it was really cool to write a song like that."

    Experiment IV Lyrics

We were working secretly for the military
Our experiment in sound was nearly ready to begin
We only know in theory what we are doing
Music made for pleasure, music made to thrill
It was music we were making here until
They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

From the painful cries of mothers to a terrifying scream
We recorded it and put it into our machine

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

It could feel like falling in love
    It could feel so bad
    It could feel so good
It could sing you to sleep
But that dream is your enemy!!

We won't be there to be blamed
We won't be there to snitch
I just pray that someone there can hit the switch

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

And the public are warned to stay off

    Experiment IV
  • This song is about how sometimes scientists get so caught up in the pure science of what they are developing that they don't realize what purpose others may have for it. For example, when scientists started splitting atoms they probably did not think of the possible future applications as weapons.
  • The origin of this song came from Kate's consideration of music as such a beautiful thing and a positive force. The idea of something so beautiful being used to kill people was fascinating. There likely are sonic experiments of a similar type actually being carried out by militaries somewhere.
  • The Whole Story is a greatest hits album. This was the only new song included with songs from previous albums.

    Girls Lyrics

Bite your face to spite your nose
17 and a half years old
I'm worrying about my brother finding out
What’s the fun in doing what you're told?

    I said "No!"
'Oh give it a rest, I could persuade you
I'm not your typical, stoned 18 year old
Give me a night I'll make you'
"I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age
But girl I'm not your savior"
    Wrestle to the ground
    God help me now because

    They're just Girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

A pair of frozen hands to hold
Oh she's so southern so she feels the cold
One moment I was tearing off your blouse
Now you're living in my house
What happened to just messing around?

    I said "Yo, I think I better go, I can't take you
You just sit and get stoned with 30 year olds and you think you've made it"
'Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?'
    Wrestle to the ground
    God help me now because

    They're just girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

I told her from the start
    Destined to be hard
I told her from the start
    I’ll break your heart
    Destined to be hard
    Break your heart

    I said "Yo, I think I better go. I can't take you"
I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age
But girl I'm not your savior"
'Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?'
    Wrestle to the ground
    God help me now because

    They're just girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

'Cause They're just girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

    'Cause they're just girls

  • This song embodies a devil-may-care attitude, and vocalist Matt Healy and director Adam Powell penned a tongue-in-cheek video treatment to accompany the track. Filmed in LA, the clip sees the 1975 taking a playful poke at the 'off the shelf' major-label pop promo. Healy explained: "When we released our last video ('Sex'), people really reacted to the fact that it was in color. There was a lot of conjecture and talk surrounding it - due to the fact that it was an unexpected stylistic change. It was brought to our attention that certain people thought we were 'conforming to a record companies wishes' along with other expected and unexpected clichés. Obviously this couldn't be further from the truth, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by a group of individuals whose mantra centers on facilitating our creative wishes, we found the whole idea of us being told what to do fascinating."

"The story of the band who suffer at the hands of a record label shortly after a delirious rise is a tale as old as time," he continued. "So we kinda wanted to make a tongue in cheek video about it. Twinned with our love of 80's pop, its innocence, grandiosity and conceptual ideas in music videos - we wanted to make a video about a record label's attempt at enforced conformity. We got our mate Adam down to a studio in Los Angeles at the start of our USA tour, got four models and made a video about us not wanting to make a video."

    Babooshka Lyrics

She wanted to test her husband
She knew exactly what to do
    A pseudonym to fool him
She couldn't have made a worse move

    She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
    Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
    She signed the letter

    "All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
    To see if he
    Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
    Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
    He shouted out, "I'm

    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!

    Babooshka
  • This is about futile situations and how we often ruin things for ourselves. In the song, a man is tested by his wife when she starts sending anonymous scented letters. Seeing his reaction, she takes it further by arranging a meeting with her in disguise. Not knowing it is his own wife, he is reminded of his wife when she was younger and more amorous.
  • The word "Babooshka" is Russian for grandmother. It's also the name of a type of headdress. The title was chosen through a series of coincidences: Kate turned on the TV and someone was singing about Babooshka; looking through a magazine she came across an opera titled Babooshka, and a friend had a cat named Babooshka.
  • They went through a lot of boxes of broken crockery to get the right sound at the end of the song.
  • This reached #1 in Australia, #3 in France, and cracked the Top 10 in Canada and Ireland.
