Hold On (Just A Little Bit Longer) Lyrics

Hold On (Just A Little Bit Longer)
  • Five songwriters are credited on this track, which was a minor near the end of Little Anthony & the Imperials career - they were officially known as Anthony & the Imperials by this time. Those writers are Tony Bell, William Berry, Rufus Brown, James Hill and Phil Hurtt. Bell and Hurtt were frequent collaborators, teaming up at Philadelphia International Records and at Atlantic Records as songwriter/producers. Hurtt told us about writing the lyrics:

"'Hold on just a little bit longer,' it's just one of those ideas. It's a thing that pops into your head. What are you holding onto? Hold on a little bit longer. And then the story popped into my head. I'm going to leave my girl here at home, and I trust her, but I don't trust people around her. So I don't mind you going out, but you have limits. Know when to say no, know when to come back, and hold on just a little bit longer. Be strong. Ideas like that just pop up. I can't put a finger on it, but it pops into your head. And once you get a title, then you get the first line, and then you get a story. You have two or three different ways you can go with the story, and then decide on which way to go. Sometimes it just takes you there."

    Mother's Daughter Lyrics

Got no time for foolin' with you baby
Your stupid game is about to end.
    You played it out.
    Thought you had it made.
And it looks like someone passed you by again.

I left her standin' in her corner
She told me she was tryin' to find her way.
I've got to leave before I get much older
Cause she ain't moved in nearly forty days.

I've got a woman that's treatin' me better.
She takes her time and she ain't so cruel.
I've got someone to take you over
    Your mother ain't so bad,
    What happened to you?

    Mother's Daughter
  • Told from the first-person point of view, this is about a man who is tired of being mistreated by his girlfriend. At the end there's a twist... the man apparently had an affair with the girl's mother.
  • Gregg Rolie got sole credit for writing this song. From 1966 to 1972, almost all of his contributions to the band dealt with heartbreak and loneliness ("You Just Don't Care," "Hope You're Feeling Better").

  • Guitarist Jade Puget described this Burials track to Noisecreep as a song "that almost like doesn't fit with the rest of the record." He explained: "I'm sure like lyrically and the tone of the lyrics fit but musically it's something we never really done before. It's another one of those songs that we wrote off the cuff. Just one part to the next so it's very natural, I think people are going to… I think it's going to be a polarizing kind of song. I think in that its such an interesting sounding song and really cool and the way his voice sounds and what I'm playing and the drums everything sounds kind of different than what we've done before."

    Here Comes the Night Time
  • This sonically schizophrenic song features propulsive percussion and festive horns gleaned from Haiti. Arcade Fire multi instrumentalist and co-vocalist Régine Chassagne has roots in the Caribbean country as her Haitian parents emigrated to Canada during the tyrannical dictatorship of Papa Doc. The band has traveled there on several occasions in recent years, including a trip to Haiti's Carnival in Jacmel.
  • Three percussionists from the Haitian band RAM lent a hand to this floor-filler. Chassagne, and Will and Win Butler spent two weeks in New Orleans with the drummers working specifically on rhythm. "We just recorded beats," Chassagne told The Guardian. "We were interested in doing hybrid beats that could translate stuff that I know from my family background in Haiti. I was always interested to try to find rhythms that mean something, to communicate emotion through rhythm and music. Because rhythm is almost like a vocabulary."
  • The song is reprised at the beginning of the record's Side B with an alternative version titled "Here Comes the Night Time II."
  • This is one of several songs on Reflektor inspired by the band's time spent in Haiti. Frontman Win Butler told The Sun: "We spent a lot of time in Haiti, an island a lot of people don't get to see. So we wanted to bring Haiti to the people. And the Haitians know how to party. We have a lot to learn, that's for sure."
  • The song starts with Butler singing:

    "When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down, you head inside
    Cause the lights don't work."

He explained in an interview with Macleans magazine: "There's a crazy energy in Port-au-Prince when the sun goes down, because there is no electricity in a lot of the city. A lot of parts of the city are pretty dangerous, and people are rushing around trying to get home."
  • The song finds Win Butler criticizing Christian missionaries, whom he believes shouldn't be attempting to convert Haitians from their own beliefs. The Arcade Fire frontman explained to Rolling Stone that he was thinking about, "Just the absurdity that you can go to a place like Haiti and teach people something about God. Like, the opposite really seems to be true, in my experience. I've never been to a place with more belief and more knowledge of God."
  • Win Butler described the song to Rolling Stone as "kind of a hybrid of Haitian Rara and Jamaican influence." He added: "We spent some time in Jamaica, but it sounds like a Cure song at the end of the day, kind of a mashup. I mean, it's not like our band trying to play Haitian music. I just felt like we were opened up to a new influence. Bob Marley probably felt the same way the first time he heard Curtis Mayfield."

High up on you, you display good traits though few.
We've found time alone will tell.
This disease keeps holding me down.
Try to run when bear sleep.
    To imagine us away.
He said come, fly around my he'll.
And know this, you seem to be
    Too scared to run.
    Wish I had your faults
    Nothing seems to phase you
Lies, you're much more than just human.
I was high up on you til the shadows began to crawl.
Some say we can never know from just how far down this beast has come.
    Too scared to run
    So scared to run
    Wish I had your faults
    Nothing seems to phase you
Lies, you're much more than just human."

    An Evening With El Diablo
  • Drummer Sam Loeffler: "That's a little bit of a joke. It's about meeting a person that you sort of randomly meet. I think it's about a specific time when Pete met somebody and thought, 'Wow, this person's really cool,' and then finds out later on that they're exactly the opposite of everything good. Essentially, that they're the devil. Not literally the devil, but everything that you would say that is bad in this world that person is about that. The devil's pawn. But your first impression is that this person's really cool, I want to hang out with them and do this and that, and then you go out with them and find out that they're snorting everything they can get and that they're bagging every girl they come across, all this stuff. It was about a time you met somebody like that and it's funny how people can cover up the real things that they're about, so that they can get to a certain point and then they unload on you. So, it's about finding out later 'Wow, I just spent an evening with the devil.' It started out cool and in the end I realized that this guy was crazy.

    Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice) Lyrics

    You and I were born
    In a little town
    Before the awful sound
    Started coming down

    Oh no oh

    You came home from school
    Knew you had to run
    Please stop running now
Just let me be the one

    For you

But I know you can see
    Things that we can't see
But when I say I love you
    Your silence covers me
Oh, Eurydice, it's an awful sound

    I was so disappointed
    You didn't want me
Oh, how could it be, Eurydice
    I was standing beside you
    By a frozen sea
    Will you ever get free?
    Just take all your pain
    Just put it on me
    So that you can breathe
    When you fly away
    Will you hit the ground?
    It's an awful sound

    I know there's a way
    We can make 'em pay
Think it over and say (I'm never going back again)
    I know there's a way
    We can leave today
Think it over and say (I'm never going back again)

When you were born in the little town
    Before the awful sound
    Started coming down
    There's so much inside you
That you won't let me see
    You fly away from me
    But it's an awful sound
    When you hit the ground
    It's an awful sound
    When you hit the ground

    I know there's a way
    We can make 'em pay
    Think it over and say
    (I'm never going back again)
    But I know there's a way
    We can leave today
    Think it over

We know there's a price to pay
For love in the reflective age
I met you up upon a stage
Our love in a reflective age

Oh no, now you're gone (No)

    Awful Sound (Oh Eurydice)
  • This song references Eurydice, who in Ancient Greek legend was the wife of the gifted musician Orpheus. The lyrics about despair, isolation and death were inspired by the story of the mythological lover's attempt to retrieve Eurydice from the underworld after she died.
  • Frontman Win Butler told The Sun that a particular inspiration was Marcel Camus' 1959 Brazilian movie about the star crossed lovers, Black Orpheus. "Regine (Chassagne, wife and bandmate) and I watched the film Black Orpheus, which is super relevant because it's based in Brazil during carnival and is the oldest pre Romeo and Juliet love story there is."

"So it got to me," he added. "I obsess about ideas. I don't know any other way to write. I try to find five different ways to look at an idea."
  • Reflektor's cover art is an image of Auguste Rodin's sculpture of Orpheus and Eurydice. This is one of several songs on the album that were inspired by Greek mythology and the structure of tragedy.

    Send The Pain Below Lyrics

    I liked,
    Having hurt,
    So Send The Pain Below,
    Where I need it.

    You used to beg me,
    To take,
    Care of things,
    And smile at the thoughts,
    Of me failing.

    But long before,
    Having hurt,
    I'll send the pain below,
    I'll send the pain below.

    Much like suffocating,
    Much like suffocating,
Much like suffocating (I'll send the pain below)
Much like suffocating (I'll send the pain below).

    You used run me away,
    All while laughing,
    Then cry about that fact,
    Til my returns.

    But long before,
    Having hurt,
    I'll send the pain below,
    I'll send the pain below.

    Much like suffocating,
    Much like suffocating,
Much like suffocating (I'll send the pain below)
Much like suffocating (I'll send the pain below)
    Much like suffocating

I can't feel my chest (chest, chest),
    Anymore,
    Drop down,
    'Cause I'm in
I can't feel my chest (chest, chest)
    Drop down!

    I liked,
    Having hurt,
    So send the pain below,
So send the pain below (Much like suffocating) (I liked),
So send the pain below (Much like suffocating) (Having hurt)

    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry

    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry

I lived for a year, in the bed by the window
    Reading books, better than memories
    Wanna feel the seasons passing
    Wanna feel the spring

    Of supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry
    Supersymmetry

It's been a while since I've been to see you
I don't know where, but you're not with me
Heard a voice, like an echo
    But it came from you

    Supersymmetry
  • This epic synth-driven meditation on mortality is a duet between vocalist Win Butler and his wife, Régine Chassagne. It reaches its peak with the help of strings from old collaborators Owen Pallet and former bandmate Sarah Neufeld. Bassist Tim Kingsbury told The Sun that the band had let the tune go by the wayside, but producer James Murphy persuaded them to complete it. "It was this super loose, open jam, a drifting electronic song, but he said we had to keep it on the record," he said.
  • This was originally written for the Spike Jonze film Her, but was reworked for Reflektor. A variation of the song can be heard weaving in and out of the track, "Morning Talk/Supersymmetry," on the Her score.

    Eclipse
  • The closing track on Pink Floyd's famous Dark Side of the Moon album, this seamlessly follows "Brain Damage" to close it out - radio stations almost always played the songs together. The album was well into production but didn't have an ending until Roger Waters came up with the song. It reprises some lyrics to the opening track "Breathe" ("All that you touch, all that you see") before closing out the album with the words, "There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

This closing statement is the voice of Gerry O'Driscoll (often misspelled "Jerry Driscoll"), who was the doorman at Abby Road studios, where the album was recorded. His is one of many random voices that show up throughout the album; Waters recorded people around the studios, looking for spontaneous thoughts, and Driscoll, with his sincere delivery and Irish accent, made the finished piece. He can also be heard on the track "The Great Gig In The Sky" (the line that begins, "I am not frightened of dying...").
  • Dave Gilmour recalled to Rolling Stone in 2011: "I remember working hard on making it build and adding harmonies that join in as you go through the song. Because there's nothing to it - there's no chorus, there's no middle eight, there's just a straight list. So, every four lines we'll do something different."
  • The working title for the Dark Side of the Moon album was "Eclipse: A Piece For Assorted Lunatics." They began working on it during rehearsals for their concerts, and performed early versions live during shows in 1972. This was an era when bands could spend a year refining songs by playing them at concerts before heading into the studio. These days, any such performance would be quickly recorded and distributed.
  • If you put on your headphones, turn down the bass and listen carefully to the right channel at the end of this song, you can hear what sounds like "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles in a Muzak-style while you are still hearing the beating of the heart. No one in the Pink Floyd camp has talked about this as far as we can tell, which gave the many owners of the album yet another talking point.
  • Dave Gilmour told Guitar World February 1993 about Chris Thomas' role on the album: "Chris Thomas came in for the mixes, and his role was essentially to stop the arguments between me and Roger about how it should be mixed. I wanted Dark Side to be big and swampy and wet, with reverbs and things like that. And Roger was very keen on it being a very dry album. I think he was influenced a lot by John Lennon's first solo album [Plastic Ono Band], which was very dry. We argued so much that it was suggested we get a third opinion. We were going to leave Chris to mix it on his own, with Alan Parsons engineering. And of course on the first day I found out that Roger sneaked in there. So the second day I sneaked in there. And from then on, we both sat right at Chris's shoulder, interfering. But luckily, Chris was more sympathetic to my point of view than he was to Roger's."
  • The heartbeat on this song brings Dark Side of the Moon full circle, closing the album the same way it opens: with the heartbeat heard on the opening track "Speak To Me." The heartbeat is actually a kick drum processed to sound like a pulse.

    I open my eyes
I try to see but I'm blinded by the white light
    I can't remember how, I can't remember why
    I'm lying here tonight

And I can't stand the pain
And I can't make it go away
No, I can't stand the pain

How could this happen to me? I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life
I just wanna scream, how could this happen to me?

    Everybody's screaming
I try to make a sound but no one hears me
I'm slipping off the edge, I'm hanging by a thread
I wanna start this over again

So I try to hold onto a time when nothing mattered
And I can't explain what happened
And I can't erase the things that I've done
    No I can't

How could this happen to me? I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life
I just wanna scream, how could this happen to me?

    I've made my mistakes
Got nowhere to run, the night goes on
As I'm fading away, I'm sick of this life

  • The video for this song, which supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving, portrays an accident caused by a drunk driver.
  • When the album was released, this was originally a bonus track called "Untitled." When it got some radio play, the subtitle "How Can This Happen To Me" was added.
