On My Way to Work Lyrics

I want someone to come home to
I need somewhere I can sleep
I need a place where I can rest my weary bones
And have a conversation not too deep

Everybody else is busy doing better than me
But I can see why it is
They got someone setting them free
Someone breaking the chains
Someone let me be

I want someone who can save me
When I come home with a zoo
I need somebody who's a sweet communicator
I can give my alligator to
Everybody ? a whole day talkin' about
And I can see why it is
They got someone breaking them out
Someone finding the key
Someone setting them free

Could you be that person for me?
Would you feel right setting me free?
Could you dare to find my key?

I want someone I can ?
When I come home to my troops
I need somebody who's to deal it with my sailor ?
?

Everybody else is busy doing better than me
And I can see why it is
They got someone setting them free
Someone breaking the chains
Someone letting them be

Could you be that person for me?
Would you feel right setting me free?
Could you dare to find my key?

On My Way to Work
  • This elegant ballad finds McCartney recalling his time working as a driver's mate for Speedy Prompt Delivery in Liverpool. He told The Observer: "That's all remembrances from Liverpool. The bus, top deck, me going to work… The specific work I was thinking of was my first job, as a second man on a lorry. The second man helps the driver unload when you get to the destination; the driver is the first man. He was very nice, my first man, because I was always knackered, and he would let me sleep. I would help load up the lorry, then get in and just sleep until we got half an hour from the destination, when he'd wake me up: 'Oi, look lively!'"

"So, that was one of my jobs," he added. "I was also a coil winder in a factory. But there was always the bus involved to get there, you know; nobody had a car. Big green buses, always the upper deck, for a ciggie, getting to work, clocking on…"
  • This song was produced by Giles Martin, who worked on the Beatles's Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas. His father is legendary Beatles knob-turner George Martin. Martin jnr told NME: "My dad came in when we were doing the strings for 'On My Way To Work,' just to say hi, which was weird. You feel like a bit of an idiot, going 'I shouldn't be here – you should."
  • McCartney took the song title from a book by the artist Damien Hirst that he saw in an art catalogue. When Paul saw it, he thought, "What would that mean to me?"
  • McCartney pulled other memories for the song of Liverpool buses where he lived as a kid in Western Avenue, Speke. He recalled to Mojo magazine: "It's a big dual carriageway and that was the end of the bus route from Pier Head. We would rifle through the bins on the bus before they were cleaned looking for ciggy packets, as we collected them like American kids collected baseball cards. And it became like in the song, a symbol of life, people come and go, smoking cigarettes."

    Positively 4th Street Lyrics

You've got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin'
You've got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that's winnin'

You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you're so hurt, why then don't you show it?
You say you've lost your faith, but that's not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it

I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you're in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it

No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And tho I know you're dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don't you understand, its not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

  • According to Rolling Stone magazine, this song is about all the naysayers and plastic people Dylan encountered during his time in Greenwich Village (when he lived on West 4th street) and his stint on fraternity row at the University of Minnesota (located on 4th Street in Minneapolis). The song deals with the jealousy he encountered from people in the artistic community who resented his success.

It's Killing Me (In My Mind) Lyrics

I need to find a place my own space
Where I can get over you 'cause you are so far away
Now that I know we could never be, I tried to move on
I tried to stay strong but you are all that I see

    [Chorus]
It's killing me, you're not here with me
    'Cause you're on my mind
    You're all that I know, I can't let go
It's killing me, you're not here with me
    'Cause you're in my dreams
    You're all that I know, I can't let go

A moment for me, I tried to tell myself to love you is to hurt
I knew we'd never work, I can't see your face
I can't touch and learn, I'm trying to get used to this
I'll be here but not for long tonight

    [Chorus]

    Oh, it's killing me
Oh, oh, you're not here with me
You are so far away, baby, [Incomprehensible]

    Now Lyrics

Could be a house, could be a field
Could be a parking lot or up on top of Kill Devil Hill
A hillbilly yacht out on a lake
A rundown barn or underneath the stars on a tailgate

I don't really care about the wheres and hows
As long as we get there and we get started

    [Chorus]
    Now
    Let's crank it up loud
    Lets turn the place out
    Let's throw down
    Ain't no maybe, gettin' crazy
    Now
    Let's have a little fun
While the night is still young
    Gonna get you some
    Anybody wanna party
Come on let me hear who's with me
    Now
    Whoa, whoa, whoa

Grab your girl, grab your phone
Tap those fingers, ring those ringers, let everybody know
Gonna make history, gonna do it right
It's gonna be a don't wanna miss everybody wish they were here with us
    Kinda night

We'll go until the sun comes up and shuts us down
Enough of this talking, let's get started

    [Chorus]
    Now
    Let's crank it up loud
    Lets turn the place out
    Let's throw down
    Ain't no maybe, gettin' crazy

Come on let me hear who's with me
    Now
    Whoa, whoa, whoa

    Are you ready to rock
Then let's blow the top right off of this town
If you're down, let's get started

    [Chorus]
    Now
    Let's crank it up loud
    Lets turn the place out

  • McCreery opens his See You Tonight album with this rocking party tune, which finds him yelling out for a good time. The 2011 American Idol winner penned the song with LA/Nashville songwriter Busbee and the record's producer, Frank Rogers. It was one of five tracks on the set that the North Carolina native co-wrote, unlike Clear as Day, which didn't include any of his self-penned tunes. Scotty admitted to Billboard magazine being somewhat nervous about featuring some of his original songwriting for the first time. "At first you're a little scared to come out of your shoes and share some of your thoughts," he said. "You have to share those intimate thoughts to get a really good song."

Well excuse me, but I think you've got my chair,
No that one's not taken, I don't mind if you sit here,
    I'll be glad to share.

Yea it's usually, packed here on Friday nights,
Oh if you don't mind could I talk you out of a light?
Well thank you, could I drink you a buy?
Oh listen to me, what I mean is can I buy you a drink?
    Anything you please.

Oh you're welcome, well I don't think I caught your name,
Are you waiting for someone to meet you here?
Well that makes two of us, glad you came.
No I don't know the name of the band but they're good,
Aren't they, would you like to dance?

Yea I like this song too, it reminds me of you and me baby
Do you think there's a chance?
That later on, I could drive you home?
No I don't mind at all,
Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

Oh I like you too and to tell you the truth
That wasn't my chair after all.

    The Chair
  • Named by CMT as one of the 100 greatest country songs of all-time, this was the result of a night-long songwriting binge by Country music songwriters Hank Cochran and Dean Dillon. The two had been writing songs all night long and as Dillon puts it "were about written out" when he strummed his guitar and sang the line "Excuse me but I think you've got my chair." Twenty minutes later, "The Chair" was complete.
  • This is one of Strait's 51 #1 hits, a record for country music.
  • Cochran was already a seasoned veteran in the music industry with classic songs like Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces" to his name, and acted as a mentor to Dean Dillon, who was making his own mark in the business penning hits for Strait and other country artists. Dillon spoke with us in 2012 about collaborating with Cochran on this: "There's some lines in that song which are just brilliant that Hank wrote. The line, 'Thank you, can I drink you a buy, well, listen to me, what I meant is can I buy you a drink, anything you please,' it just shows how flustered the guy was. He's tripping over himself to get to know this girl. And using every line in the book, basically, to get her attention. And I just thought that was really brilliant on Hank's part. But then you have to understand Hank Cochran was one of the most brilliant songwriters ever in country music."

    Feel Good Summer Song Lyrics

I park the car out on the beach, let the water kiss my feet
Can hear the music coming from the pier
The beat is fast, the bass is loud
I could disappear into the crowd
But I think that I'll just stay out here
    'Cause since you're gone

    [Chorus]
I can't hear another Feel Good Summer Song
The sunshine only lights up what is wrong
I should just give in and sing along and laugh like we used to
The tide is high, the sky is blue, but how can I get over you
When every station is playing a feel good summer song

It seems like you were just right here
The sand was white, the coast was clear
You kissed me just so you could steal my shades
We snuck off underneath the dock
As the waves crashed on the rocks
You told me that you'd always feel this way
    But now you're gone

    [Chorus]
I can't hear another feel good summer song
The sunshine only lights up what is wrong
I should just give in and sing along and laugh like we used to
The tide is high, the sky is blue, but how can I get over you
When every station is playing a feel good summer song

Since you're gone, the music's trying to sway me to move on
But I just wanna stay here all night long missing you
Wishing you would come back but you're gone

    [Chorus]
I can't hear another feel good summer song
The sunshine only lights up what is wrong

    "Since you're gone

The sunshine only lights up what is wrong
I should just give in and sing along,"

Scotty explained: "Every time he turns on the radio station, he just hears another feel-good country song. He says, 'How can I get over you when every station is playing a feel-good country song?'"

    [Chorus]
    I've had Choices
Since the day that I was born
    There were voices
That told me right from wrong
    If I had listened
No I wouldn't be here today
    Living and dying
    With the choices I made

    I was tempted
By an early age I found
    I liked drinkin'
Oh, and I never turned it down
    There were loved ones
But I turned them all away
    Now I'm living and dying
    With the choices I made

    [Chorus]

    I guess I'm payin'
For the things that I have done
    If I could go back
    Oh, Lord knows I'd run
    But I'm still losin'

    Choices
  • This song is basically the true life story of George Jones, who overcame drug and alcohol addiction.
  • The year this was released, Jones was supposed to perform it on the televised CMA Awards. The CMA's wanted George to perform about 30 seconds of the song directly before a commercial break, so George backed out of the performance because he refused to perform only part of the song. During the live awards show, fellow Country singer Alan Jackson rebelled against the CMA's and stopped his song "Pop A Top" midway and started into the full version of this.
  • Rumor was from backstage at the CMA's after Alan Jackson broke the format and performed "Choices" on the awards show he walked straight out the back door saying, "That might be it for my career." Of course, it was anything but. George Jones saw Jackson's performance on TV at his home, and applauded the effort. A couple of years later, Jackson used the CMA awards to perform, for the first time, his post 9/11 tribute "Where Were You."

    Forget to Forget You Lyrics

If you see my number on your phone when you pick it up
Or get a good morning text when your wakin' up
Or see my truck drivin' by at the end of the day
If you get a letter in the mail from me now and then
Or find a note on your door from me checkin' in
If I send you a rose or a whole bouquet
    Well, pay no mind
I just Forget to Forget You sometimes

    [Chorus]
It ain't nothin' but a habit, I can break it
I can shake it, I can make it on my own
Ain't like I really care or I miss you
Or it matters or I wish you weren't gone
    Don't think I'm that
God, I gotta get you back
Probably never gonna get over you kind
I just forget to forget you sometimes

I wish you would've caught me out rockin' last night
Instead of catchin' me sittin' at this green light
Baby, I was on a roll 'til I heard that song
It ain't nothin' but a ghost then it's gone again
Ain't like I'm still stuck in what could'a been
Every part of me wants to be movin' on
Except the back of my mind
It just forgets to forget you sometimes

    [Chorus]
It ain't nothin' but a habit, I can break it
I can shake it, I can make it on my own
Ain't like I really care or I miss you
Or it matters or I wish you weren't gone

It ain't like I really care or I miss you
Or it matters or I wish you weren't gone
Don't think I'm that so lost without you
    Every thought's about you
    Holdin' onto somethin'
    That's never gonna happen
God, I gotta get you back
Probably never gonna get over you kind
    No, it's just that I
    Forget to forget you sometimes

"Anybody who is a teenager has been there before. People relate to it and it's one of those emotions that you can't put on the back burner. It's real and it hurts. Yep Roc Hearesay
  • This song was banned on at least two Los Angeles radio stations for its suspicious lyric references to drugs and crime. The suspicion was really toward Slim Gaillard himself, who did indeed attract more than his share of suspicion. It was later revealed that the lyrics Slim used were taken through reading an Armenian dinner menu.
  • A now very overlooked artist of the '30s and '40s, Slim Gaillard was a cult hero of his time. At least 2 pages of Kerouac's On the Road make reference to Gaillard; "One night we went to see Slim Gaillard in a little Frisco nightclub. In Frisco great eager crowds of semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums... Now Dean approached him, he approached his God; he thought Slim Gaillard was God." He played several instruments and could tap dance while playing piano with the back of his hands. His most famous songs include "Flat Foot Floogie," "Cement Mixer" and the children's classic, "Down By The Station." His lyrics were all over the place, as he sang about food, cars, liquor, and whatever he was experiencing at the time. He made up songs as he went, and only looked back to play greater versions of them with greats such as Dizzy Gilespie and Charlie Parker. His music was a prelude to bebop Jazz, and he has even been coined as the true great granddaddy of modern rap.

I woke up this morning to the hummin' of the engines
Haulin' nature's finest from the Gulf of Mexico
Riding this ol' river is peaceful but it's lonesome
And it makes me wonder how the old folks are at home

    [Chorus]
Now the years have blown by me like the wind through the pines
But the song of the south is ever sweet as homemade wine
Oh, how I miss those mountains when the laurels are in bloom
And the southern stars are dancin' 'round the North Carolina Moon

Just rolled through Memphis, I could hear them guitars palyin'
They had the blues so so bad it almost broke my heart
But it don't sound nothing like a band of tree frogs singin'
When every now and then they get in tune with grandpa's harp

    [Chorus]
Now the years have blown by me like the wind through the pines
But the song of the south is ever sweet as homemade wine
Oh, how I miss those mountains when the laurels are in bloom
And the southern stars are dancin' 'round the North Carolina moon

Now when I die boys, make me this promise
You'll send my body back up North Carolina way
I don't want no tombstone, just lay me next to mama
And let the honeysuckle grow wild upon my grave

    [Chorus]
Now the years have blown by me like the wind through the pines
But the song of the south is ever sweet as homemade wine
Oh, how I miss those mountains when the laurels are in bloom

    Pretty women wonder
    Where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit
    A fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them
    They think I'm telling lies.

    I say
It's in the reach of my arms
    The span of my hips
    The stride of my steps
    The curl of my lips.

    I'm a woman
    Phenomenal Woman
    (Yes indeed)
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenal woman
    Baby that's me.

    I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
    And to a man
    The fellows stand or
    Fall down on their knees
    Then they swarm around me
Like a hive of honey bees.

    I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
    The swing of my waist
    The joy in my feet.

    I'm a woman
    Phenomenal woman
    (Yes indeed)
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenal woman
    Baby that's me.

It's in the arch of my back
    The sun of my smile
    The ride of my breasts
    The grace of my style.

    Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
    I don't shout
    Or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
    When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.

    I say
It's in the click of my heels
    The bend of my hair
    The palm of my hand
    The need for my care.

    I'm a woman
    Phenomenal woman
    (Yes indeed)
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenal woman
    Baby that's me.
    Baby that's me yeah
