World Without Tears Lyrics

[Chorus]
If we lived in a World Without Tears
How would bruises find
The face to lie upon
How would scars find skin
To etch themselves into
How would broken find the bones

If we lived in a world without tears
How would heartbeats
Know when to stop
How would blood know
Which body to flow outside of
How would bullets find the guns

If we lived in a world without tears
How would misery know
Which back door to walk through
How would trouble know
Which mind to live inside of
How would sorrow find a home

[Chorus: x2]

How would broken find the bones
How would broken find the bones

World Without Tears
  • Recording the World Without Tears album was a new experience for Lucinda Williams, who is used to working in a booth rather than a sprawling 1920s mansion in Los Angeles. She recalled in an interview with Guitar World Acoustic how co-producer Mark Howard duped her into cutting everything live: "He set all of us up in one big room that had been designed for live acoustic music by the original owners, who used to throw dinner parties and would entertain their guests with light opera, so it was sonically ideal. My band and me were on one side of the room and Mark was on the other with his console. I was used to the band being together when we recorded, but I've always been isolated in a booth so I could fix or overdub my vocals. I'm such a control freak that I want to try to get every part of my performances exactly right. I said at the beginning, 'This is not gonna work. I'm probably going to have to redo all my vocals.' But Mark kind of tricked me at first and said I could go back and repair my parts. Then, after we got into it a little, he told me that touch-ups couldn't be done."

    Standing In The Rain Lyrics

    My head, it hurts
    Each day it's getting worse
    My looks and smile
    Have now become my curse
    Tight lips, red skirt
    The never ending street
    Big car, little man
    My lover for a fee

So if you see me will you just drive on by
Or will I catch the twinkle inside your eye
And did you want me? Well I guess I want you
Oh pretty baby how could you?

    Standing In The Rain
    Milk carton mug-shot baby
    Missing since 1983
    Standing in the rain
    Twenty years of dirty needles
    Raindrops runnin' through my veins

    My head it hurts
    Each day its getting worse
    No sun, my room
    Has now become my hearse
    Cold sores, I'm beat
    Got bruises on my feet
    My pride, these men
    Have taken it from me

So if you see me will you just drive on by
Or will I catch the twinkle inside your eye
And did you want me? Well I guess I want you
Oh pretty baby how could you?

    Standing in the rain
    Milk carton mug-shot baby
    Missing since 1983

  • This is one of three new tracks included on Devotion: Vital Special Edition, a deluxe version of Anberlin's 2012 Vital album. Frontman Stephen Christian told AntiMusic the song was inspired by an adventure he had with some buddies biking through the streets of his hometown late one night. "One of my friends is big into fix gear/10 speed bikes so we all met up late one spring night and headed through the nearly empty streets of Nashville," he recalled. "It was one of the most alive I have ever felt the city, speeding downhill in silence when its usually a buzzing metropolis."

"There is something invigorating about empty big cities, lit up for no one, there for the taking for anyone," continued Christian. "As the song evolved through the demos I realized that any city a person is in, big or small, empty or alive, is there for the conquering for those willing to take it on."

    Black Angel's Death Song Lyrics

The myriad choices of his fate
Set themselves out upon a plate
    For him to choose
    What had he to lose

    Not a ghost bloodied country
    All covered with sleep
Where the black angel did weep
Not an old city street in the east
    Gone to choose

    And wandering's brother
    Walked on through the night
With his hair in his face
On a long splintered cut from the knife of g.t.

The rally man's patter ran on through the dawn
    Until we said so long
    To his skull-shrill yell

    Shining brightly red-rimmed and
    Red-lined with the time
Infused with the choice of the mind
    On ice skates scraping chunks
    From the bells

    Cut mouth bleeding razor's
    Forgetting the pain
    Antiseptic remains cool goodbye
    So you fly
To the cozy brown snow of the east
    Gone to choose, choose again

Sacrificials remains make it hard to forget
    Where you come from
    The stools of your eyes
Serve to realize fame, choose again

And roverman's refrain of the sacrilege recluse
For the loss of a horse
Went the bowels and a tail of a rat
    Come again, choose to go

And if epiphany's terror reduced you to shame
Have your head bobbed and weaved
Choose a side to be on

    If the stone glances off
    Split didactics in two
Leave the colors of the mouse trails
    Don't scream, try between
If you choose, if you choose, try to lose
For the loss of remain come and start

Start the game i che che che che i
    Che che ka tak koh
    Choose to choose
Choose to choose, choose to go

    Black Angel's Death Song
  • This song covers a variety of topics but the main one has to do with Communism. Lou Reed was and is today an avid supporter of choice, hence all the mentions of choice and choosing. Some of the failed attempts at Communism are mentioned as well. When Reed says, "To the cozy brown snow of the east" and "Not a ghost bloodied country," these are blatant references to Russia and the USSR. Reed was trying to say that Communism will never and should never exist in a modern-day society. (This analysis was completed by Matt Skaroff and Colin Rementer)
  • According to The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side , this song, written by Lou Reed and John Cale, features Cale on the electric viola, showing his John Cage influence and drone/noise style. Here his dissonant notes weave around the song like a buzzing mosquito, almost harassing it. Those bursts of audio feedback are also provided by Cale, who simply blew into the microphone at punctuated intervals.
  • "The Black Angel's Death Song" was one of four songs recorded in July 1965 for the still-forming group's first demo tape. They were inspired at the time by recordings which Cale had brought back from a trip to the UK, by groups such as The Who and The Kinks.
  • The Velvet Underground's original drummer was Angus MacLise, a neighbor of Cale's who sometimes played drums with the Theater of Eternal Music. Shortly after recording the demo session that included this song, MacLise quit the group, who was an idealistic purist who disliked the idea of being paid to play music or of having to keep a schedule. He was replaced by Maureen "Moe" Tucker, and the rest is history.
  • The The Velvet Underground & Nico album was partly recorded at the run-down Scepter Recording Studio, on West 54th Street, financed by Warhol and bankrolled in part by Columbia Records sales executive Norman Dolph. Dolph also served as engineer, along with John Licata. The rest of the album was recorded in T.T.G. Studios in Hollywood, California with engineer Omi Haden.
  • The Black Angels, a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas which formed in 2004, derived their name from this song. This echoes the most famous quote about the Velvet Underground, "Only five thousand people ever bought a Velvet Underground album, but every single one of them started a band."

  • August Alsina is a Hip-Hop singer from New Orleans who is signed to Def Jam Recordings. He first recorded this celebration of good smoking, alcohol and women on his May 2013 mixtape The Product 2, then recycled it on his debut EP, Downtown: Life Under the Gun.
  • Whilst Alsina is enjoying the fruits of his hard work, he also admits on this cut to being concerned that his is too young to be living in the fast lane. Trinidad James spits the last verse from a different perspective, as he complains to a woman that she is looking for love in the wrong places.
  • The song's beat was supplied by Arkansas-born, and Atlanta-based producer Sam "Knucklehead" Irving. His other credits include Gucci Mane's "Scotty" and Soulja Boy's "The First."
  • A remix recorded with Trey Songz and Chris Brown, brought the song to the attention of many new fans. The new version changes the emphasis of the hook from "I love this s--t" to "she loves it" transforming it into a celebration of the R&B lotharios' sexual prowess.
  • This topped Billboard's Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart, making Alsina the first R&B singer to reach #1 on the tally with a debut single since Jeremih's 2009 "Birthday Sex."
  • The song won the Coca-Cola Viewers' Choice Award at the 2014 BET Awards.

(Ghost) Riders In the Sky Lyrics

An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw
A'plowin' through the ragged skies and up a cloudy draw

    Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
    Ghost riders in the sky
Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breaths he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders comin' hard and he heard their mournful cry
    Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
    Ghost riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, and shirts all soaked with sweat
They're ridin' hard to catch that herd but they ain't caught them yet
They've got to ride forever in that range up in the sky
On horses snortin' fire, as they ride on, hear their cry

    Yi-pi-yi-ay, Yi-pi-yi-o
    Ghost riders in the sky
As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
"If you want to save your soul from hell a' ridin' on our range"

"Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride"
"A-tryin' to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies."

  • This was written and originally recorded by Stan Jones in 1948. Jones was a forest ranger who wrote songs on the side. After recording his version of the song, artists like Burl Ives, Bing Crosby, Gene Autry and Johnny Cash all recorded it, and the song became a cowboy standard.
  • The melody is based on the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."
  • The song presents an image of cowboy hell - riders who are doomed to chase the Devil's cattle for all eternity.

    Good To You Lyrics

I know you were needing more of me than I gave
When we heard that your cousin had crashed and passed away
I hate it when I talk without thinking
I will do what you are needing me to do

I wanna be Good To You
I wanna be there for you
And when I come home, will you still want me to?

When your best friend got married I was off and gone
You said it wasn't a problem, that there was nothing wrong
With putting my work, my art, and my songs
Before spending time at the wedding
As I listened over the phone-line, you talked and you sounded so sad
Alone in a room full of strangers, some dude saying I treat you bad
Who is this guy and what does he know?
    Apparently more than I do

I wanna be good to you
I wanna be there for you
And when I come home, will you still want me to?
And when I come home, will you still want me to?

When you were born I promised myself I'd always be there for you
To help you feel safe and never alone, no matter what life put you through
Time passed by, I lost my way, and didn't find it for years
A strong young woman now stands in her place
    The child has disappeared
Now that I'm home, do you still want me here?

I wanna be good to you
I wanna be there for you
I wanna be good to you
And when I come home, will you still want me to?
And if I come home, will you still want me to?

  • This tune finds The Avett Brothers examining their need to tour. They started writing the song in 2005 and completed it for their 2013 Magpie and the Dandelion album.
  • One of the downsides of touring is missing out on important events and here bass player Bob Crawford sings a verse which mentions being unable to attend a wedding. He told Rolling Stone: "Most guys on the road, whether you're a rock star or you're just traveling a lot for work, you're going to be in that situation. You have a wife or a girlfriend or a family, and you can't make it. You just can't make it."

    Stacy's Mom
  • This song tells the story of a kid who has developed a huge crush on his friend's super-hot mom. Adam Schlesinger , songwriter and bassist for Fountains of Wayne, revealed in our interview that the track was actually inspired by a friend who was, curiously, attracted to Adam's grandmother: "Well, one of my best friends told me that he thought my grandmother was really hot, that added a little bit to the song. That's a true story. And my grandmother was pretty hot."
  • Schlesinger told us he had Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson " in the back of his mind when he penned "Stacy's Mom": "It was a contrast of that story against a track that sounded like '80s new wave, like The Cars or something."

The Cars' influence is obvious - just compare the intro of their track, "Just What I Needed ," to the intro of "Stacy's Mom" to hear for yourself.
  • This song was a commercial success and reached #1 on iTunes' Most Downloaded Songs chart. In 2004, it was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Vocal Pop Performance. Adam Schlesinger told us "Stacy's Mom" "is definitely the biggest of my own band stuff." Schlesinger added to Bullz-Eye.com that he does not think Fountains of Wayne will achieve the same level of success they did with "Stacy's Mom" ever again: "I think 'Stacy's Mom' was a fluke thing where it was the right song and the right video, and you kind of had the novelty factor, and all that stuff. And you can't really make that happen again."
  • Actress and model, Rachel Hunter, portrayed Stacy's mom in the song's official video - directed by Chris Applebaum. Parts of the video bear a striking resemblance to the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. At one point in the movie, a character named Brad is in a bathroom fantasizing about his sister's friend and the friend walks in on him. His sister's name, coincidentally, is Stacy .
  • The song featured in a commercial for the Cadillac SRX , which shows a woman picking up her daughter from school. As she does so, men gaze longingly at her "beautifully practical and practically beautiful" …car.

    [VERSE 1:]
You were lyin' there with nothing on
But a goofy little grin and a platinum blonde
I can't believe you'd do that on our bed
    I got a pistol and I got a bullet
And a pissed off finger just'a itchin' to pull it
The only thing keepin' me from losin' my head

    [CHORUS:]
Is I hate Stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

    Woah, woah, woah

    [VERSE 2:]
I could fall in love with the prison guard
I could sell cigarettes in the prison yard
Don't think hard time would be that hard on me
I could pick up trash on the side of the road
But I'd die if I saw someone I know
Ain't the chains, it's the clothes that's stoppin' me

    [CHORUS:]
I hate stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

    [BRIDGE:]
Oh, and one shot ain't worth a bad mugshot
God knows I wouldn't be caught holdin' up a number
While the whole town's starin' at the picture
In the paper of me wearin' stripes

    [FINAL CHORUS:]
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes
    And orange ain't my color

    Stripes
  • Already a successful songwriter with credits for #1 hits by The Band Perry ("Better Dig Two") and Miranda Lambert ("Mama's Broken Heart"), Brandy Clark released her first solo album, 12 Stories on October 22, 2013. This is her first single from the collection.
  • This tells a dark but humorous tale of a woman who decides not to murder her cheating lover as prison uniforms aren't flattering. Clark told Billboard magazine: "That song seems to push a lot of buttons with a lot of people, women in particular. It's kind of a fantasy – that thought of 'I just caught you cheating on me. I'd shoot you right now, but I'm too vain. I don't look good in orange, and I hate stripes. I can deal with prison, but I can't deal with that part of it.' It's probably the most fun song on the record."
  • The song features the rather cool lyric: "There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion." Clark smiled to Billboard: "I wish I could say that was my line when we were writing it. I wrote that with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally. Shane and I both remember when Matt said that, and how obvious that is, but none of us had thought it. He just says it, and we were like 'Yeah, that's it.'"
  • The song's music video was directed by Becky Fluke (Little Big Town, Pistol Annies). HLN legal commentator Nancy Grace plays a cameo role.
  • Clark penned this with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally during a writing retreat. "It was too loud, so we decided to go down the road and find a park or whatever to write at," she recalled to Spin magazine. "But instead, we stopped at this house where no one was. The fence was locked, so we jumped over it. We're sitting out on these people's deck, completely trespassing, writing a song, and Matt and I were both very nervous that they were gonna come home: Every time a car would drive by, he would jump up and look around the corner. It became a little bit distracting, and at some point, he [jumped up again], and I said, 'Oh, c'mon Matt, the worst that could happen is we'll be wearing orange jumpsuits.' And Shane said, 'I've always wanted to write a song called 'Orange,' about a woman who wants to shoot her husband, but she doesn't like the color orange. But nothing rhymes with it.' And I said, 'Yeah, but everything rhymes with stripes.' And we were just off."
  • 12 Stories was named the best album of 2013 in any genre by New York Magazine's Jody Rosen, New York Post's Michaelangelo Matos, NPR's Ann Powers, Slate, and Boston Globe's Sarah Rodman.

    Somewhere between psychotic and iconic
Somewhere between I want it and I got it
Somewhere between I'm sober and I'm lifted
Somewhere between a mistress and commitment
But I stay down, girl I always stay down
Get down, have her lay down
Promise to break everybody off before I break down
    Everyone just wait now
So much on my plate now
People I believed in they don't even show they face now
What they got to say now?
    Nothin' they can say now
Nothin' really changed but still they look at me a way now
What more can I say now?
What more can I say now?
You might feel like nothin' was the same

I still been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I still been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The Furthest Thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

I just been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I just been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

And I hate that you don't think I belong to ya
Just too busy runnin' shit to run home to ya
You know that paper my passion
Bittersweet celebrations, I know I can't change what happened
    I can't help it
    I can't help it
I was young and I was selfish
I made every woman feel like she was mine and no one else's
    And now you hate me
    Stop pretendin', stop that frontin'
    I can't take it
Girl don't treat me like a stranger
Girl you know I seen ya naked
Girl you know that I remember, don't be a pretender
Gettin' high at the condo, that's when it all comes together
    You know I stay remniscin'
    And makeup sex is tradition
    But you been missin' girl
And you might feel like nothin' was the same

I still been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I still been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

I just been drinkin' on the low
    Mobbin' on the low
    Fuckin' on the low
    Smokin' on the low
I just been plottin' on the low
    Schemin' on the low
    The furthest thing from perfect
    Like everyone I know

    Drinkin', smokin', fuckin', plottin'
    Schemin', plottin', schemin', gettin' money
    Drinkin', fuckin', smokin', plottin', schemin'
    Plottin', schemin', getting money

    This the life for me
My mama told me this was right for me
I got em worried, like make sure you save a slice for me
I should have Spoons, serve you up with a fork and knife for me
Your actions make us doubt you
Your lack of effort got me rapping different
This the shit I wanna go out to
Play this shit at my funeral if they catch me slippin'
Naked women swimming that's just how I'm living
Donate a million to some children, that's just how I'm feeling
A nigga filling up arenas, who the fuck can see us
I had to Derrick Rose the knee up before I got the re-up
    Yours truly the boy
I just build and build more
    Y'all niggas build and destroy
You niggas party too much, man I just chill and record
No filler, you feel it now if you ain't feel it before
Yes Lord, this the shit I wanna go out to, yeah
This the shit I wanna go out to

    Furthest Thing
  • This Jake One co-produced track finds Drake examining the duality imposed by fame and his personal limbo:

    "Somewhere between psychotic and iconic
Somewhere between I want it and I got it
Somewhere between I'm sober and I'm lifted
Somewhere between a mistress and commitment."

Happily the song closes on a celebratory note as the successful Toronto MC comes to the realization that "this is the life for me."
  • Drake boasts in the third verse about how he's got his competitors scared that when he's finished rapping, there won't be anything left for them:

"I got 'em worried, like make sure you save a slice for me.
I should have Spoons serve you up with a fork and knife for me."

Drake is not only continuing the food metaphor in the second line, but also referencing his cutlery-monikered bodyguard Spoons. Drake shouted out another of his bodyguards, his longtime buddy Chubby Chub, on the Nothing Was The Same deluxe version bonus track, "The Motion:" ("And my dog Chubby Chub, that's my nigga from the way").
  • We often point out bad grammar in songs , so here we'll give Drake credit for his proper use of "furthest." A common mistake is the use of "farthest" in this situation, which would indicate a literal distance (Hawaii is the state farthest away from California). When Drake raps about being the "furthest thing from perfect," he is indicating a figurative distance, and "furthest" is correct.

    Times Like These Lyrics

    I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm the one that drives away
    Then follows you back home
    I, I'm a street light shining
I'm a wild light blinding bright
    Burning off alone

It's Times Like These you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

    I, I'm a new day rising
    I'm a brand new sky
To hang the stars upon tonight
    I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
    And leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

    Times Like These
  • At the time, Dave Grohl called this "The best song I've ever written." The rousing track became a live favorite for the band, and one of five songs in their set when they performed at the Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium in London, to a crowd of about 80,000.
  • The song finds Dave Grohl at a crossroads, but confident he will find the right path. The One by One sessions were a slog, and they made him question the band's future:

    I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
    And leave it all behind?

But then he assures himself that these trials are for the best, as he will emerge stronger:

It's times like these you learn to live again
  • The Foo Fighters performed this song on the February 22, 2003 episode of Saturday Night Live. During the performance, Jim Carrey ran onto the stage, strummed his leg like a guitar, and then dove offstage.
  • This song was used at some of George W. Bush's presidential campaign rallies in 2004. Dave Grohl never wanted to get involved in politics, but since he despised Bush, he decided to campaign for Bush's rival in the election, John Kerry.

"I was personally offended that George Bush was using 'Times Like These,'" Grohl said. "I know what I'm singing about and it basically mirrored what John Kerry's campaign was trying to represent.

Stirred into action, Grohl joined Kerry on some of his campaign stops, typically performing some acoustic songs before Kerry spoke. The experience had a profound effect on Grohl and inspired many of the songs that would end up on the next Foo Fighters album, In Your Honor which was named in tribute to Kerry.
