Hurricane Lyrics

You're spinning out of control again
Your life feels like a sinking ship
You're wondering how it came to this

Is it too late?
Is it too far?
For Him to reach you
And come to where you are

Step out on the edge
Don't be afraid of it
And when you feel the rain
Call His name
He'll find you in the Hurricane

You're in the wreckage underneath
Your hope is buried somewhere deep
You're wondering how long it will keep?

It's never too late
Never too far
For you to reach out
And take a hold of love

Step out on the edge
Don't be afraid of it
And when you feel the rain
Call His name
He'll find you in the hurricane

Don't back down from the fight
He'll shelter you tonight
Just hold on for the change
Call His name
He'll find you in the hurricane

There's a place, there's a place you can run
When you fall, and it's all come undone
You'll be safe in the raging storm
So just let go
'Cause you are held in His arms

Step out on the edge
Don't be afraid of it
And when you feel the rain
Call His name
He'll find you in the hurricane

Oh oh

And when you feel the rain
Call His name
He'll find you in a hurricane

Hurricane
  • This is the title track and lead single of Christian singer-songwriter Natalie Grant's eighth album. It was birthed during a dark period of Natalie's life that included a battle with postnatal depression and her father's cancer diagnosis. She admitted to NewReleaseTuesday that it wasn't an easy song to write: "The day that I went to write Hurricane'—which was the very first song for the album—I was going to the studio, and it was literally drudgery for me," she said. "I didn't want to go, and I was thinking of every reason to cancel the appointment. It was with Matt Bronleewe and Cindy Morgan, who are two people I greatly respect. I felt empty and insecure. I walked in the studio, and told them all I've got is this, "ooh-ooh, ooh" idea. It was kind of hooky, but it was all I had. In my personal life, I had been walking in these storms, and it's funny because this first single and first song ended up shaping the entire album."
  • Natalie explained the song's message to NewReleaseTuesday: "We cry out to Jesus to stop the storms in our lives, and the fact is that sometimes Jesus wants us to know that the storms are still going to happen, but He'll be standing right there with us," she said. "The Bible says that Jesus didn't hesitate when Peter cried out for help. Jesus reached out His hand. In writing this song, the fog didn't lift, but hope began to resurface in my mind, truthfully. The moment of thinking I was in an unending storm, I knew Jesus was with me, and I can ask Him to stop it. He's telling us to not look out at our problems, but to look up, because He understands."

"'Hurricane' broke open wide the creative dam for me and began the process of knowing I could have hope that a better day is coming," Natalie added. "It's hard to admit as a Christian artist that sometimes we have our own crisis of faith, but it's true. This song has been an anchor for me, in my own marriage and family, in my own life, and in my own faith. This was a great opportunity for me to share my own struggles. It's easy to say, 'We're a victor in Jesus.' We are. We really are. It is the truth and makes an awesome bumper sticker. It's hard to live that day in and day out when you are being pounded by the storms of life."

    Walk Away Lyrics

    I made this bed
I choose to lie in it
    Live with my regrets
    Sleep with what I said
    Could this be the end
I'm standing on the edge of everything I wanted now
    I was afraid
    I was afraid

Maybe I'm just scared to face the things I fear
It's easier to Walk Away from everything

Separate my soul with all the things we shared
    I'm falling to pieces
Now say a prayer for me (Say a prayer for me)
When you go to bed ('cause)
I'm in need of your faith now
    I was afraid

Maybe I'm just scared to face the things I fear
It's easier to walk away from everything

If we could just re-set and live in happiness
Instead of out regrets, We would salvage everything
We don't have to walk away
Pray for me now, I'm in need of faith
Pray for me now, I'm in need

Maybe I'm just scared to face the things I feared
It's easier to walk away from everything
If we could just re-set and live in happiness
Instead of out regrets, We'd salvage everything
Maybe I'm just scared to face the things I failed
It's easier to walk away from everything
    Walk away from everything

    Lightning Bolt Lyrics

    Lightning Bolt
  • The tightly coiled title track of Pearl Jam's tenth studio album finds Eddie Vedder singing about a girl who struck him within his heart like a bolt of lightning. He goes on to lament about having to let the mystery woman go. "I wonder who that's about," commented guitarist Mike McCready to Billboard magazine. "The cool thing is kind of not knowing. I can put in the context of what I feel and who I know just like you can…the important thing is what it means to you the listener."
  • The song was debuted live at Chicago's Wrigley Field in July 2013 after a thunderstorm threw literal lightning bolts in the sky around the baseball stadium.
  • Longtime producer Brendan O'Brien said Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics for this midtempo rocker using the same typewriter he's written every Pearl Jam album on since they met in the early '90s.
  • The Lightning Bolt album was Pearl Jam's fifth chart-topping LP in the US. It also reached #1 in Australia, Belgium, Croatia, Ireland and Portugal, while its entry into the UK chart at #2 equaled the best-ever performance in that country.

    Because Of You Lyrics

Hands on the mirror, can't get much clearer
Can't make this all go away
Now that you're bleeding, you stare at the ceiling
And watch as it all fades away

From what you do...Because Of You...

You know I can't be there each time that you call
I swore not to come, but I'm here after all
I know by the look that I see in your eye
I won't stand around and I won't watch you die
    For what you do..

(What you do, what you do, was because of you) x2

Now that you did this, you ask for forgiveness
Doctor could you be my priest
Say you're mistaken, but look what you've taken
You laugh as you lie through your teeth

From what you do...because of you...

You know I can't be there each time that you call
I swore not to come, but I'm here after all
I know by the look that I see in your eye
I won't stand around and I won't watch you die

    Going To Hell Lyrics

(The end is the end, don't bless me father for I have sinned)

    Father did you miss me,
    Been locked up a while.
I got caught for what I did but took it all in style.
Laid to rest all my confessions I gave way back when.
Now I'm versed in so much worse,
So I am back again, and he said

For the lives that I take, I'm Going To Hell!
For the love that I make, I'm going to hell!

Gettin' heavy with the devil, you can hear the wedding bells.

    Father did you miss me,
Don't ask me where I've been.
You know I know, yes, I've been told I redefine a sin.
I don't know what's driving me to put this in my head.
Maybe I wish I could die, maybe I am dead!
    And he said

For the lives that I fake, I'm going to hell!
For the vows that I break, I'm going to hell!

For the ways that I hurt, when I'm hiking up my skirt.
I am sitting on a throne while they're buried in the dirt.

For the man that I hate, I'm going to hell!

Gettin' heavy with the devil, you can hear the wedding bells.

    Please forgive me father,
I didn't mean to bother you.
    The devil's in me father.
He's inside of everything I do.

For the lives that I take, I'm going to hell!
For the laws that I break, I'm going to hell!
For the love that I hate, I'm going to hell!
For the lies that I make, I'm going to hell!

For the way I condescend and never lend a hand.
My arrogance is making this head buried in the sand.
For the souls I forsake, I'm going to hell!

Gettin' married to the devil, you can hear the wedding bells.

    Going To Hell
  • The title track of Pretty Reckless' sophomore album references the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, which swept through the north eastern United States in the fall of 2012 . The storm ravaged their studio, wiping out the majority of the band's gear as well as a batch of demos and near-completed recordings for their second set. "We had to rebuild," frontwoman Taylor Momsen recalled to Rolling Stone.

Momsen wrote this tune during the band's downtime as they struggled to regain their footing. "Out of tragedy came that song," the vocalist said. "It pretty much summed everything up [about the album]."
  • The song's music visual was directed by Tim Mattia (Biffy Clyro, Cage The Elephant, Young Guns). "The new video for 'Going To Hell' captures the right look for the sound of the band," said Taylor Momsen. "It's a subtle blast of sins and rock and roll meant to be watched over and over until the real meaning of the song sinks in. We're psyched for it to come out and for the fans to see it."
  • Several of The Pretty Reckless' tracks have religious overtones. Momsen admitted to Kerrang! that she suffers from "Catholic guilt" due to her upbringing but insisted anyone who thinks the record has a basis in religion isn''t listening properly. "I''m not a Satanist. It''s not what I''m saying at all, so it gets a little daunting when people take it so... over the top," she explained. "They''re thinking of a shallow level of Hell. It means that they aren''t getting the point of the record."

"Touring the world changed my perspective," Momsen continued. "There are so many problems and it doesn''t seem like anyone''s talking or writing about it. From equality and the imbalance of power to [the way] we don''t treat the Earth right and we don''t treat each other right."
  • The image on the album cover of a naked Momsen, facing away from the camera with the band's cross logo stretching down her back towards her butt, raised some eyebrows. The singer told Kerrang! the picture has been misconstrued. "The nudity came into play as a homage," she said. "But there's a lot of metaphor happening. We're saying, 'You come into this world with nothing but your soul, and you leave with nothing but your soul.'"

If you fall asleep with me
    You can dream and drowse

And watch the sun go down
    Upon our sleepy town

After all the time I spent with you

Not grown ups but not kids
You kissed me on the lips

    You deleted your evidence
    You depleted yourself
    Face down wasn’t good enough
You had to give me your hell

Not much more inside of me left to lose
No one hates me quite like you
Let me show you the proof

    I don’t mind my own self-loathing
And I don’t need help from you
    I know I’m lonely
But what am I supposed to do?

    You believe that you’re innocent
    You’re relieving your guilt
The Jury seems to be deadlocked
Look at the drama you built

Seems like everyone’s guaranteed damaged truth
What makes someone hate like you?
And is there something to prove?

    But I don’t mind my own self-loathing
And I don’t need help from you
    I know I’m lonely
But what am I supposed to do?

    Oh, I don’t mind my own self-loathing
And I don’t need help from you
    (I don’t mind my own)
I know I’m lonely, but what am I supposed to do
    (I don’t want to know)
With all my coldest memories of you?
    (I won’t give my all)
    I know I’m angry… and I don’t know need help from you
    (I don’t want to know)

    A Rumor Of Skin
  • This is a track from House Of Gold And Bones: Part 1, the first half of a double concept album about a character called The Human who wakes up in a mysterious world, where he comes across various characters including one who is his doppleganger called Allen. The Human is instructed by his look-a-like to find the House of Gold and Bones before the before an event called the Conflagration takes place. Frontman Corey Taylor told Artist Direct how this song fits into the storyline. "It's basically the first meeting between Allen and The Human," he said. "When I'm hearing that, I see the moment when they're in the building. There's the smoky mess that will eventually coalesce into Allen holding the cigarette and smoking. That's what I hear in my head as that happens."

"As he starts to coalesce, that's where the real back and forth starts to come about." continued Taylor."There are three different voices going on. There's one which is Allen, one which is The Human, and one in the background that's doing the melody line from 'Gone Sovereign,' I don't know if people really catch that."
  • Taylor told Artist Direct the song's main riff came from an accident. "I was sitting there playing guitar," he explained. "I did this slide down to go to an open e-chord, and I missed it by half a fret. I built everything on top of that. I had the melody for the chorus, but I even had the chords for it. Putting that together was really awesome."

    Galileo Lyrics

Galileo's head was on the block
The crime was lookin' up the truth
And as the bombshells of my daily fears explode
I try to trace them to my youth

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of Galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

And then you had to bring up reincarnation
Over a couple of beers the other night
And now I'm serving time for mistakes
Made by another in another life time

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

    I'm not making a joke
You know me I take everything so seriously
If we wait for the time till all souls get it right
Then at least I know there'll be no nuclear annihilation in my life time
    I'm still not right

And then I think about my fear of motion
    Which I never could explain
Some other fool across the ocean years ago
Must have crashed his little airplane

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

I offer thanks to those before me
That's all I've got to say
'Cause maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime
    Now I have to pay

How long till my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo king of night vision
    King of insight

But then again it feels like some sort of inspiration
To let the next life off the hook
Or she'll say look what I had to overcome from my last life
    I think I'll write a Book

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light
I call on the resting soul of galileo
King of night vision king of insight

How long 'til my soul gets it right
Can any human being ever reach the highest light
Except for Galileo, God rest his soul
King of the night vision, king of insight
    How long
    How long

  • Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls wrote this song. She told us: "I was talking with my friend about reincarnation, what we believe. Does it mean that you come back as a dog or a tree or whatever, another human being, and the exchange of souls and all that stuff. And that just got me thinking about it. I wanted to write a song that was upbeat, that sort of took the whole subject sort of in a lighthearted way, even though I was thinking about it very seriously. There's this one point in the song where, as I understood reincarnation, you know it's a regeneration of souls for the betterment of all creatures and things over time. And I was thinking, you know, I'm so far from being the perfect soul that at least the world isn't going to experience nuclear holocaust while I'm alive, because I have to have my soul be regenerated at least once. So it was kind of like taking a heavy subject and sort of having fun with it.

I don't know if I believe in the exchange of souls, but I'm not a firm believer in reincarnation, and that I'm going to come back and be a dog, or another creature. I have a different belief system now, but back then, my friend really believed that we come back as something else, and it is a regeneration of souls until we reach Nirvana." (Here's the full Emily Saliers interview )
  • Galileo Galilei was a brilliant Italian astronomer who championed the belief that the Earth revolved around the sun, and not the other way around. Since the church believed the Earth was the center of the universe, they tried Galileo for heresy in 1633, and he spent the end of his life under house arrest, where he continued to write.

Says Saliers: "I was thinking about him because he came up with such great truths. He was like this pinnacle of light and truth, and the church made him recant. So I was thinking, he's a great role model for a truth seeker, and with reincarnation being a spiritual pursuit and its relationships to the church, I was just sort of lumping those things together. His name just popped in my head. I thought he was such a brave guy, and then to have to recant that, and then of course we all know what he discovered is true now, or as true as we can believe it to be, so he just became the focal point."
  • Regarding the lyrics, "I think about my fear of motion which I never could explain, some other fool across the ocean years ago must have crashed his little airplane," Saliers says: "The fear of motion was mostly about the fear of speed. Like, I do not like flying, although I do it all the time, I'm used to it now. But there was a time when I hated it. And I don't like skiing, I don't like things that take me downhill fast. If reincarnation were true, then this guy who crashed his plane in the ocean a generation ago and came into my soul, that's why I have that, and I still have to work on that."

Oh this is what its coming to
    Another water loo
    You wanna put me underground
    'Cause I'm overused
Giving up that your pulling me down
I will make you come unglued

You can cover me in sovilties
    What an apogee
I can fake it 'cause you'll never be real to me
    I'm innocent, I know I'm nearly in
But if I can't understand I will never win

The more I know my mind
The more I leave you all behind
Living in the shadow of doubt

    Oh my heart survived
    I gotta do it alone
I will burn alive in the house of gold and bones

    Oh old day epitome
Of all the shit in me
And I'm surrounded by the people I will never be
Either way I've got nothing to prove
To a song of a bitch like you
Well this is hell and I wanted it
    But I'm an idiot
Its a feat 'cus I know I'm illegitimate

    Kill it
    I wanna see it

  • This track closes House Of Gold And Bones: Part 2, the second half of a double concept album about a man called The Human struggling to find his place in the world. Frontman Corey Taylor's narrative is intended to be universal, speaking to everyone's hopes and fears. He told Artist Direct about this cut: "That was the last song we put together before we went into the studio," he said. "Thematically, it was almost tailor-made for us to do it this way. It was basically made up of flipping certain riffs from 'Gone Sovereign' and 'Absolute Zero' and sort of playing them backwards in a weird way. If you listen to it thematically, you can see where some of it backwards, but you have to really listen to it."

"We needed the outro," he continued. "We needed that moment where the human has made his decision and he's sticking with it no matter what that decision is. That's all open to the reader. You need that moment. You need the big crescendo. You need the final act to draw you in and leave you with that closure. That was the perfect song to do it with."

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
    Goodbye I'm going home
I don't care no more so don't you worry
    Goodbye I'm going home

I hate the way that even though you

I hate the books you read and all your friends
Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

There's no need for you to say you're sorry

I don't care no more so don't you worry
    Goodbye I'm going home

I hate the way that you are so sarcastic
    And you're not very bright
You think that everything you've done's fantastic
Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

And it will be nice to be alone
    For a week or two
But I know that I will be
    Right back here with you

There's no need for you to say you're sorry
    Goodbye I'm going home

Your music's shitty it keeps me up all night

    Married With Children
  • This song was written in Definitely Maybe producer Owen Coyle's bedroom. Owen had ex-Stone Roses lead guitarist John Squire's acoustic guitar in the corner. Noel, Liam and Owen recorded there and then.
  • The living room depicted on the cover of the Definitely Maybe album belonged to guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs.
  • This song was inspired by Noel's then-girlfriend, Louise Jones, who was being kept awake by the Oasis songwriter while he was practicing on his guitar. She was getting fed up and told Noel, "your music's s--te." Gallagher said he "had to keep those lines" and then wrote this song.
  • This has the same chord progression structure as Nirvana's "Lithium."
  • The song was inspired by the American sitcom Married... with Children. Noel Gallagher told Melody Maker: "I looked at them two in the show, and looked at us two, and I thought, that's us, that is!"
  • Noel Gallagher: "It's another song that anybody could relate to, because if you live with a girlfriend or just a flatmate, there are always petty things that you hate about them, and this song's just about pettiness."

    Tomorrow Lyrics

These endless days are wait for me
Tearing my heart that breaks for you
    I'm coming home Tomorrow

Though you're not lying next to me
I hear your song that calls to me
    I'm coming home tomorrow
    Back in your arms

    Tomorrow's just a dream I can't detain
    It's like a fall I can't contain
And though it seems so far away
It's just a day, a lonely day away

The summer's gone and I can see
The season's end is set me free
    I'm coming home tomorrow
    Back in your arms

    Tomorrow's just a dream I can't detain
    It's like a fall I can't contain
And though it seems so far away
    It's just a day,
    A lonely day away

    Tomorrow I'm coming home
    Tomorrow I'm coming home
I'm so tired and so alone

    It's like a dream I can't detain
    It's like a fall I can't contain
And though it seems so far away
    It's just a day,
    A lonely day away

    Tomorrow
  • Chester Bennington explained to Artist Direct that his lyrics for this song are about that last day on tour before coming home: "For me, I'm gone for long periods of time," he said. "It could be anything from five days to five weeks. When you're on tour and you're not with your family, the first week-and-a-half flies by pretty quickly. You get that adrenaline and excitement of the tour. Then, it slows down to real time, which is still not bad. It's that last day before coming home that seems like it takes forever. It's like the lowest point for me. As I'm traveling so much, the last day is the worst and most depressing time. It just doesn't seem to go by fast enough."

"Really, what it comes down to is the love I have for my wife and children," Bennington continued. "When you're disconnected from that, you get a little bummed out. 'Tomorrow' is literally about the feelings I get on that last day before coming home."

    Columbia Lyrics

There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me
There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me

But I can't tell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me
No I can't sell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me

What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear
What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear

This is confusion am I confusing you?

    Columbia
  • This was the first song that Noel Gallagher wrote with Oasis. He recalled to Q magazine: "One Sunday afternoon I was at home watching EastEndersd when our kid rings up and says, 'You coming down for a jam?' I'd never played with anyone else ever. I went, 'Alright.' I'm asking, 'Do you know any Beatles songs?' 'No.' 'Not Ticket To Ride?'

"We sit there for hours and hours, dead hot and sweaty, and its great," Gallagher continued. "Same the next Sunday and – just because they didn't know any Beatles, really – we decide to write a song ourselves and I come up with what turns out to be Columbia."
  • Oasis opened their first gig at Manchester's Boardwalk on (probably) January 15, 1992 with this song. Noel Gallagher recalled to Q magazine: "It went down like a f---ing knackered lift (laughs). We played this epic, six minute, stone-grooved song, dow, wow, dow, duh duh, the total crossing of rock music and dance music beyond anything that's been heard before and everyone's like (blank face). Soul destroying. This bowl of silence."
  • This was Bonehead's favorite song to play live.
  • Noel Gallagher explained the song's background in the liner notes to Definitely Maybe's 2014 reissue: "When we started, we didn't have a lot of songs so we would jam out current Acid House favourites and f--k about. 'Columbia' derived from one of those nights. It was an instrumental and we played it the first night I ever did a gig with Oasis. When we started at The Real People's studio, somebody had the idea of adding lyrics and it's still a bone of contention to this day who actually wrote the words. We were all on acid at the time but I know I wrote 90 percent of them. It's named in honour of the hotel (in London). Because when I was a roadie with Mark Coyle working for the Inspiral Carpets, we loved that hotel, it was the scene of many nights of nonsense. And it sounded like a good title. I mean, why call anything anything?"
