Early Days Lyrics

They can't take it from me, if they try
I lived through those Early Days
So many times I had to change the pain to laughter
Just to keep from getting crazed

Dressed in black from head to toe
Two guitars across our backs
We would walk the city roads
Seeking someone who would listen to the music
That we were writing down at home

But they can't take it from me, if they try
I lived through those early days
So many times I had to change the pain to laughter
Just to keep from getting crazy

Hair slicked back with Vaseline
Like the pictures on the wall
Of the local record shop
Hearing noises we were destined to remember
We willed the thrill to never stop

May sweet memories of friends from the past
Always come to you, when you look for them
And your inspiration, long may it last
May it comes to you time and time again

Now everybody seems to have their own opinion
Who did this and who did that
But as for me I don't see how they can remember
When they weren't where it was at

And they can't take it from me, if they try
I lived through those early days
So many times I had to change the pain to laughter
Just to keep from getting crazy

I lived through those early days
I lived through those early days

Early Days
  • This song finds McCartney exploding the mythology of the Fab Four as he has a dig at people who stereotype him as the 'soft' Beatle. He told NME it is a minor bugbear of his. "It's nothing I obsess about. But it does happen," McCartney said. "I mean, The Beatles story is actually in history classes – my grandkids say, 'You were in a book today, Grandad!' And you go, 'What! Oh no! Shame of it! So you kind of like the idea of people getting it right. For me, when people analyse it all I think, well, on the basis of what? They weren't there, they don't know, they didn't sit in the room with me and John and see who did what. They heard the stories and stuff but the truth is much more subtle. If me and John were sitting down it wouldn't be 'Come on Paul, write a bit of melody... yer f---er. The film would be like that: (Adopts high-pitched McCartney voice) 'Oh, Ok John, how about this: 'la lala...'"
  • McCartney told the BBC that on the day he wrote this song, he had been reminiscing about his past in Liverpool with John Lennon: "I started to get images of us in the record shop listening to early rock and roll and looking at the posters and the joy that that gave me remembering all those moments," he said.

"So that song just evolved around that," Macca continued, "and then I found that one of the things that came was - you can't take it away from me, even though you can say 'hey this is what happened in Liverpool in the late 1950s but I'm going to say 'were you there or did you just read about it?' Because I was there and I was walking down that street - so it's that kind of song. It gets a bit of a dig at people who say they know what it was all about but they weren't there - but mainly it's just fond memories for me."
  • The song's music video was shot between Los Angeles; Natchez, Mississippi and Faraday Louisiana. The visual was directed by Vincent Haycock, who has worked with Calvin Harris on a number of his clips including the ones for Feel So Close" and "Sweet Nothing" and "Thinking About You."

Rather than a factual reflection on the early relationship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the visual pays homage to the twosome by portraying a pair of aspiring blues musicians in the 1950s American South. Haycock said: "Their story at its core is a universal one, two young kids who bond over their passion for music and form a band and friendship. This video is about them, and every band, and every kid who has suffered the ups and downs of starting a band, whether or not they became successful."

"The universality of their story was a big inspiration of setting the film in Mississippi during the 50s," he added. "This is a time period that inspired The Beatles ' American Rock and Roll and the Mississippi Delta Blues of the 50s. Early Days is about the spirit and inspiration young musicians find in each other."

The video also features a jam session between McCartney and Johnny Depp. The American actor and part-time guitarist has made quite a habit of appearing in the former Beatle's clips, having also featured in the visuals for "My Valentine" in 2012 and "Queenie Eye" in 2013

    Dittohead Lyrics

This fucking country's lost its grip
    Subconscious hold begins to slip
The scales of justice tend to tip

The legal system has no spine
    It's corroding from inside
Slap your hand you'll do no time

    Reality on vacation
    All across a blinded nation
    Mentality under sedation

    Anyone can be set free
    On a technicality
Explain the law again to me

    Here in 1994
    Things are different than before
    Violence is what we adore

    Invitation to the game
Guns and blades and media fame
Every day more of the same

    Murder, mayhem, anarchy
    Now are all done legally
    Mastermind your killing spree

    Unafraid of punishment
    With a passive government
There's nothing for you to regret

    Nothing to regret

    Unimposing policy
    No enforcing ministry
    Gaping with judicial flaws
    Watching a fading nation crawl

    Clashing with the public's frame
I'm the one that's place in fame
    Legislature sets the stage
Social slaves caught in my rage

    Administrative anarchy there's nothing
    You can do to me
The world around you drifting to a
    Continental tomb you see
    Violence is my passion
    I will never be contained
    Living with aggression and its
    Everlasting reign

    Hey baby, where you going?
No please don’t rush off so soon
If you leave me like this
    What I’m gonna do

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long
The only thing that I’ve been hoping for
Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
But I just wanted to tell ya, I think you’re great
I know you’re late, but I need another taste
    Breakfast Can Wait!

Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam
Can't nobody cook it like you girl
    No ma’am!
This here early morning, need something else on my plate
I think I want another bite of you
    Breakfast can wait!

    Breakfast can wait
You really put it on me
You shut it down last night
I thought the police was gonna come
    Loud, yeah, quite
I ain’t tryin’ to make you blush
    I just think you’re great
    Ain’t no need to rush
    Breakfast can wait

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long
The only thing that I’ve been hoping for
Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on

But I just wanted to tell ya, I think you’re great
I know you’re late, but I need another taste
    Breakfast can wait!

    Hotcakes smothered in honey
    (Wait a minute)
    I’m gon’ have to pass
Fresh cup of coffee, no, no
I’d rather have you in my glass
Only thing’s that gonna sweeten my tongue
Only thing that’s gonna last now
Is another bite of you babe
    Breakfast can wait

    Finally my eyes are open
I dream about you all night long

Is before you to go to work babe, we get it on

    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!

Can’t stop even if the á¹—olice come
    Breakfast can wait!
I got a double time, kick drum
    Breakfast, breakfast
You can’t leave a black man in this state
    Breakfast can wait!
    Oh no
    Breakfast, breakfast can wait!

Come here baby, let me put you on my plate
    Hey now
    Breakfast can wait!
    Better call your job yeah
    Breakfast can wait!
Tell ‘em you gon’ be late
    Breakfast can wait!
    Yeah, yeah, yeah

    Nice one
    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!
    Breakfast can wait!
You’re the only thing I need
    Breakfast can wait!
    Sweetness in my tongue
    Breakfast can wait!
Come here baby, let me show you where I’m from
    Breakfast can wait!
    Yeah

You might need to come again

  • The official artwork for this song is actually a picture of comedian Dave Chappelle impersonating Prince in a sketch on the 2000s Comedy Central series Chappelle's Show. Chappelle's Prince impersonation was one of his most popular - he portrayed The Purple One as being absurdly good at basketball.
  • The song's music video was directed by 18-year-old Danielle Curiel, who also stars in the clip as The Purple One himself. Prince granted the teenager complete artistic and directorial freedom after a single reading of the treatment that she submitted for the song.

    Angel Of Death Lyrics

    Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The why that I want you to die
    Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life

    Forced in
    Like cattle
    You run
    Stripped of
    Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel Of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die
    Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

    Sadistic, surgeon of demise
    Sadist of the noblest blood

    Destroying, without mercy
    To benefit the Aryan race

    Surgery, with no anesthesia
Fell the knife pierce you intensely
    Inferior, no use to mankind
Strapped down screaming out to die
    Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead
    Infamous butcher,
    Angel of Death

Pumped with fluid, inside your brain
Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes
    Burning flesh, drips away
Test of heat burns your skin, your mind starts to boil
    Frigid cold, cracks your limbs
    How long can you last
    In this frozen water burial?
    Sewn together, joining heads
    Just a matter of time
    'Til you rip yourselves apart
    Millions laid out in their
    Crowded tombs
    Sickening ways to achieve
    The holocaust
    Seas of blood, bury life
Smell your death as it burns
    Deep inside of you
    Abacinate, eyes that bleed
    Praying for the end of
    Your wide awake nightmare
Wings of pain, reach out for you
His face of death staring down,
    Your blood running cold
    Injecting cells, dying eyes
    Feeding on the screams of
    The mutants he's creating
    Pathetic harmless victims
    Left to die
    Rancid Angel of Death
    Flying free

    Angel Of Death
  • This song is about Josef Mengele (The Angel Of Death), a doctor at Aushwitz who performed gruesome experiments on prisoners during the Holocaust. Many people who don't fully understand metal or Slayer have branded them Neo-Nazis and Satanists, but the song was written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman because he has an interest in World War II. His father landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
  • "Angel of Death" has become one of Slayer's signature songs and a classic of the thrash metal genre. It is included in all of their live albums and band-produced DVDs. It also appears in the soundtrack to many films, including Gremlins 2, Jackass: The Movie, and the 2005 documentary Soundtrack to War.
  • This was one of Rick Rubin's early productions. Slayer were signed to Rubin's Def Jam label, which also had Beastie Boys (that's how Slayer guitarist Kerry King ended up doing the solo on "No Sleep Till Brooklyn"). Def Jam's output was distributed by Columbia, but they refused to issue this one, so Rubin turned to Geffen, which handled the distribution.
  • Rick Rubin took a different approach to producing this track in order to get a very clean sound. Since Slayer plays very fast, Rubin left the reverb off to keep it from turning to mush. He also boosted the drums, which kept the guitars at bay. He explained in Rolling Stone: "Dave Lombardo is this incredible, unbelievably great drummer. One thing that we did was make the drums louder. The nature of distorted electric guitars is that they sound loud regardless of how loud they are. Whereas drums, because it's a natural instrument, depending on how loud they are in the mix really changes that feeling of how hard they're being hit. If you're in a room with the drums and somebody's hitting them hard, they're much louder. So, psychologically, by making the drums louder, it made everything seem louder."
  • This song has also been covered by other metal bands, including Monstrosity, Apocalyptica, Asinesia, and the Slayer tribute band Dead Skin Mask. Slayer having headlined Ozzfest several times, "Angel of Death" is also found in compilation albums from the annual hard rock festival.
  • How did Slayer come to write a song about Josef Mengele, of all people? In the book Precious Metal: Decibel Presents the Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces , the interview for Reign in Blood reveals that while the band was touring from their previous album, they did not yet have a tour bus, so they were just driving around in a car, with not much for amusement but paperback books they'd buy at rest stops. Jeff Hanneman ended up reading a book on the topic which sparked his interest.
  • In Precious Metal, Slayer co-lead guitarist Kerry King has this to say on the controversy over this song: "People get this thought in their heads - especially in Europe - and you'll never talk them out of it. They try to talk you into what they're thinking. When you ask them a question and you give them an answer they don't want, they'll be like 'Well, don't you mean...' And I'm like 'No, dude, I don't mean that.' It's just like, wake up."

A mini-essay about controversy: Why does Slayer go through life with such a target on its chest? Dozens of bands produce material that's far gorier. Almost every heavy metal band you can name pins a pentagram or 666 or other "Satanic" imagery to their album cover. Here is the Reign in Blood album cover , which is part of the reason Def Jam's distributor, Columbia Records, refused to release it - compare it to the work of Hieronymus Bosch . As for subject matter, there's a song out there which makes light of violence against women, murder, mutilation, necrophilia, and cannibalism. That song is "I Hold Your Hand in Mine ," by noted satirist Tom Lehrer. Now, where's the protests and picket groups and censorship and album-burning when it comes to Lehrer? Science needs to find out why bands like Slayer draw so much fire while others get a free pass. In the mean time, we're going to have to assume that Slayer is scary while Lehrer and Bosch are not, and so people are reacting based on raw emotions and not on any kind of logic at all.

I sold more dope than I sold records
You niggas sold records, never sold dope
So I ain’t hearing none of that street shit
Cause in my mind, you mothafuckas sold soap
Got rich selling hope to the hopeless
But I’m a thinker, methodic in my motives
I motivate to put my niggas into motors
No woman, no child, no witness, no Jehovahs
Like Scarface but it's God's face in that mirror
We was made in his image, dialing and it's much clearer
Scoring from the heights but I wanted mine purer
Aryan, blonde hair, blue-eyed like the Führer
The judge and the jury, the jewellery mad froze
Water colors on my neck, fuck rhyming when you blinding niggas
We ain't the same color clarity of diamond, nigga
Nah, I ain't got nothing in common with yous
Pain in my heart, it's as black as my skin
They tipping the scale for these crackers to win
No reading, no writing, made us savage of men
They praying for jail but I mastered the pen
Descendant from kings, we at it again
Just hand me the crown, I'm active again
Everything that it seems, hear my passion again
Was never my dream, the immaculate win

I was pissing my shorts having rich nigga thoughts
Wish I had a pistol before all the friends I done fought
Over night I seen a nigga go get a Carrera
Two weeks later I had to be that boy pallbearer
Young king bury me inside a glass casket
Windex wipe me down for the life after
Crack dealer living like a hoop star
Black marble, white walls in my new spot
Four chains, big studs, a nigga too fly
Top down, tank top, I think I'm 2Pac
So I'm labeled the rebel, nigga get on my level
We were born to be kings, only major league teams
Chasing my paper, couldn't fathom my wealth
Built a school in Ethiopia, should enroll in myself
God body and mind, food for the soul
When you feeding on hate, you empty, my nigga, it shows
Follow the codes, ain’t no love for these hoes
If you slip and you fall I got you my nigga, Hold On
If you right or you wrong, if you riding come on
By the end of this song, can't be hiding for long
I seen children get slaughtered, niggas' grandmothers assaulted
Throw a gang sign, dare you do something about it
Fuck copping them foams, when you copping the home
Cop a kilo and have them people on top of your home

Follow the codes, ain't no love for these hoes
If you slipping you fall, I got you, my nigga, hold on

  • This song finds Pusha and Rick Ross spitting out downtrodden verses whilst an uncredited Kanye West supplies background vocals. "It's hard and emotional; it's what people wanna hear... as a rap purist," Pusha told The Boombox . "It almost has the same qualities to me that 'Sixteen' with [Ross] and Andre 3000 [had]. Not that the song sounds anything like that, but just the fact that you want to hear rap. Like you just hear two guys blacking out over verses."
  • The song starts off with Pusha drawing a clear line between his life as a rapper and his former one as a dope dealer:

"I sold more dope than I sold records, you n---as sold records never sold dope
So I ain't hearin' none of that street s--t, 'cause in my mind you motherf---ers sold soap."

Surprised at Pusha's claim that his income from record sales have yet to exceed his profits from drug dealing? My Name Is My Name is only Pusha's fourth album, his other three being released with his brother Malice under the Clipse moniker. The sibling's 2002 debut Lord Willin' was a RIAA-certified gold record, but their two subsequent releases (Hell Hath No Fury and Til the Casket Drops) didn't fare so well. "I don't think I sold that many records," the rapper told MTV News. "My run in the music game hasn't been the average rise to success. You're right, I have sold a million records. My favorite album, I've sold no records on Hell Hath No Fury. I only got three albums, I've been in the game since 2002, it's 2013 I only got three albums with the Clipse."
  • The music video finds Pusha returning to the streets with Ross where they deliver their testimonial verses to a classroom full of at-risk young adults. The scene morphs into a memorial service setting, with shots of black men wearing T-shirts depicting victims of random gun violence. "The concept of 'Hold On' is me and Ross performing in front of some neighborhood guys, lecturing and basically telling the people of the neighborhood — our peers, essentially — that we' re here for them and we' re doing this for them," Push T told MTV News.

He added: "Ross is a perfect fit for any song with me, personally, because I feel like he's one of the people I could count on to give a clean, concise, immaculate verse."

I Don't Know How To Love Him Lyrics

I Don't Know How To Love Him.
What to do, how to move him.
I've been changed, yes really changed.
In these past few days, when I've seen myself,

    I seem like someone else.
I don't know how to take this.
I don't see why he moves me.
    He's a man. He's just a man.

And I've had so many men before,
    In very many ways,
    He's just one more.
    Should I bring him down?

    Should I scream and shout?
    Should I speak of love,
    Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this.

    What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny,
I should be in this position.
I'm the one who's always been

So calm, so cool, no lover's fool,
    Running every show.
    He scares me so.
I never thought I'd come to this.

    What's it all about?
Yet, if he said he loved me,
I'd be lost. I'd be frightened.
    I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope.

I'd turn my head. I'd back away.
    I wouldn't want to know.
    He scares me so.
    I want him so.

    I love him so.

    Go Gentle Lyrics

    You're gonna meet some strangers.
    Welcome to the zoo.
    Bitter disappointments.
    Except for one or two.
    Some of them are angry.
    Some of them are mean.
    Most of them are twisted.
    Few of them are clean.

Now when you go dancing with young men down at the disco.
    Just keep it simple.
You don't have to kiss though.
Don't waste time whit the idiots
    Think that they're heroes.
    They will betray you.
    Stick with us weirdos.

For all your days and nights
    I'm gonna be there,
I'm gonna be there, yes I will.
    Go Gentle through your life.
If you want me I'll be there.
When you need me I'll be there for you.

Don't try to make them love you.
    Don't answer every call.
    Baby be a giant.
    Let the world be small.
    Some of them are deadly.
    Some don't let it show.
If they try and hurt you.
    Just let your daddy know.

    Now when you go
Giving your heart make sure they deserve it.
    If they haven't earned it.
    Keep searching, it's worth it.

For all your days and nights (days and night)
I'm gonna be there (I'm gonna be there)
I'm gonna be there, yes I will.
Go gentle through your life (through your life)

When you need me I'll be there for you.

Go gentle to the light (to the light)
I'm gonna be there (I'm gonna be there)
I'm gonna be there, yes I will.

  • Robbie penned this song shortly after becoming a father to daughter Teddy in September 2012. He told Magic FM: "'Go Gentle' is a promise I'm making to my daughter. It was written when she first arrived on the planet and I'd been a selfish popstar for most of my life and then all of a sudden I've been asked to take care of this whole person."

"I still am scared that I'm not up to the task," Robbie continued, "I'm doing a good job of being dad but it's scary, you have to look after this person for the whole of their life, I'm not very good at even looking after me!"
  • Williams penned this with his original songwriting partner, Guy Chambers. "It still gives me goosebumps when I hear it,' Chambers told The Daily Telegraph. "You don't often hear men talking like that in songs. Rob's very good at writing new types of songs about love that aren't conventional 'I Love You' songs. Go Gentle is very touching. The first time he sang it [for a Radio 4 special], he just cried; he was in pieces at the end."
  • This was the first time Williams and Chambers had worked together on a full album since Williams and Chambers fell out while recording Escapology in Los Angeles in 2002 It is one of three songs on Swing Both Ways that were written by Williams and Chambers during a week in Los Angeles in January 2013 (the others being "Shine My Shoes" and "No One Likes a Fat Pop Star.") Williams recalled to The Sun: "We got to the studio at my house in Los Angeles and I'm sat on the sofa and Guy's on the piano. For 20 minutes in my head it was like 'Oh f---, this isn't going to work.' Then boom – we had 'Go Gentle' and then we went one after the other, very quickly. It was like old times."

    Cowboys From Hell Lyrics

Under the lights where we stand tall
    Nobody touches us at all
Showdown, shootout, spread fear within, without
We're gonna take what's ours to have
Spread the word throughout the land
They say the bad guys wear black
We're tagged and can't turn back

    You see us comin'
And you all together run for cover
    We're takin' over this town

Here we come, reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
    It's been slow down below,
Aimed at you, we're the Cowboys From Hell
Deed is done again, we've won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend
    Cause high noon, your doom
Comin' for you we're the cowboys from hell

Pillage the village, trash the scene
But better not take it out on me
Cause a ghost town is found
Where your city used to be
So out of the darkness and into the light
    Sparks fly everywhere in sight
From my double barrel, twelve gauge,
Can't lock me in your cage

    You see us comin'
And you all together run for cover
    We're takin' over this town

Here we come, reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
    It's been slow down below,
Aimed at you, we're the cowboys from hell
Deed is done again, we've won

Deed is done again, we've won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend
    Cause high noon, your doom

Step aside, we're the cowboys from hell

    Cowboys From Hell
  • This is about Pantera coming out of Texas and emerging on the heavy metal scene. Few people would associate Texas with a band like this.
  • Pantera splits songwriting credits equally, since all members contribute to the writing process. In our interview with their bass player Rex Brown , he said that guitarist Dimebag Darrell did the heavy lifting on this one. "That was Dime all the way," he said. "Except I play guitar on some of that - the rhythm section that became the mid-bridge break, and also the solo part, I wrote all that. Other than that, that was all Dime."

    Sugarcane Lyrics

So so sleeping on the ground tonight
I couldn't breathe so I had two of these
Sugarcane bounce the same when it touches the heat, when it touches the heat

Hurricane always came when the season?s complete
I was late, why?d you step back? You were already there
You could take from the lead but you don't even care

I've attempted but become so desperate to win
We only talk about your damn charades
I've attempted but become so desperate to win
We only talk about your damn charades

The grass may be greener but you can't even smell
How did the king included you?
The grass may be greener but you can't even smell
How did the king included you?

    [Chorus]
    Beware, beware
    Beware, beware
    Beware, beware
    Beware?

Knock, knock, getting on your knees tonight
Kicking the boys, you want me back
But the dead was alive when I go to the beach
How could I leave? How could I leave?

Hurricane always came when the season?s complete
Yellow hair over there, now I?ve got to compete
With a bang on the hand and there's something in the air

I've attempted but become so desperate to win
We only talk about your damn charades
I've attempted but become so desperate to win
We only talk about your damn charades

The grass may be greener but you can't even smell
How did the king included you?
The grass may be greener but you can't even smell
How did the king included you?

    [Chorus: x2]
    Beware, beware
    Beware, beware
    Beware, beware
    Beware, beware

    Sugarcane
  • Guitarist Derek Miller told NME this is a personal song. He explained: "The first lyric is, 'So so sleeping on the ground tonight. I couldn't breath so I had to move east,' I was born in Pahokee, Florida which is in south Florida in the middle of the state. And I was raised in Belglade where my dad was a sugarcane farmer. You have to burn the fields as part of the harvest, to shuck the cane. And it literally rains ashes from the sky. It sounds like a very nice, apocalyptic image. It's not poetic, it's insane. It's crazy, it's surreal. And I remember that at the age of four, and I had terrible asthma so I couldn't breath. That's why we ended up moving east to Jupiter, to the Ocean. The doctor said, 'this kid needs clean air' and I've since grown out of it. It's a really personal song."

    Give It Away Lyrics

I never return to love somebody
Now all that I need is all I see in you
    And only you
And if you get lost I'll always find you
You're all that I need your heart will keep you true
    My only you

You make me fall and I can't sleep
You want it all but it's too deep
And I can't Give It Away
I just can't give it away

When you slowly close your eyes
Replay the moment in your mind
    Just give it away
    Just give it away

When you slowly close your eyes
Replay the moment in your mind
    Just give it away
    Just give it away

Don't ever forget to tell somebody
    The feelings inside
To make your dreams come true
    I dream of you

To feel so alive and want somebody
    It's not make believe
My world would be for you
    And only you

You make me fall and I can't sleep
You want it all but it's too deep
And I can't give it away
I just can't give it away

When you slowly close your eyes
Replay the moment in your mind
Breathe in and give it away
Breathe out and give it away

When you slowly close your eyes
Replay the moment in your mind
Breathe in and give it away
Breathe out and give it away

    Sing Like a Wire Lyrics

Static in the sentence, static in the dirt
Something like a hunter, shaking, I go wild
Burn your body, I can see your burning fire
    I sing everything

    [Chorus]
    Sing Like a Wire
    Sing like a wire

Sit for a while, you can sit beside the fire
Dreamed I was a hunter with a never ending thirst
By the middle of July you were buried in the dirt
Looking in the dark, saying your goodbyes
Looking in the dark, saying your goodbyes
    We sing everything

    [Chorus]
    Sing like a wire
    Sing like a wire

Blaze it down in the mix
Let me hear all the kicks
Blaze it down in the mix
Let me hear all the kicks

    Sing Like a Wire
  • Guitarist Derek Miller originally came up with this song in 2005, and it was one of the first things Alexis Krauss sang when they formed Sleigh Bells in 2008. Miller told NME: "I didn't know what to do with it from a production standpoint. I tried it on Treats but it was too macho and meaty and big-sounding. IT was too muscular. So I had to thin it out. That was sort of the opposite approach, to sort of thin it out which is why the verses are really tiny sounding."
  • The song starts off with a nod to Michael Jackson's legendary producer, Quincy Jones. "Quincy Jones, his autobiography definitely changed my life," Miller told NME. "If you listen to those horn stabs in the intro, it's the beginning of 'Bad.' It was sort of done as a joke? But besides that I just think it sounds bad ass. The tempo as well it's like, 108 bpm."

    I Know You Well Lyrics

    This morning under awaking glow
The sun filled our room like December snow
Like morning through an old window
There's a place in your head I will always know

To the same world born two of a kind
If it's on your mind, it'll be on mine ?cause
    I Know You Well
Like the soil in the ground

Grass grown in the shadow of a blow
And if the blow will never toll
    You and me grow old
I hope we'll live to tell

How you know I know you knew I know you well
Down under, beneath the softened skin
Where the words we whisper sink in
It's no wonder the way the words still ring

Sure as sin, it's not a secret thing
To the same world born two of a kind
If it's on your mind, it'll be on mine ?cause
    I know you well

Like the soil in the ground
Grass grown in the shadow of a blow
And if the blow will never toll
    You and me grow old

I hope we'll live to tell
How you know I know you knew I know new york 1991
Here in the same room for so long
    Out of the cold November

    Still as a passport picture
    Still as a passport picture
To the same world born two of a kind
If it's on your mind, it'll be on mine ?cause

    I know you well
Like the soil in the ground

    I Know You Well
  • Chris Collingwood: "I originally wrote this song for my brother's wedding, but the words got fictionalized at some point. For me, part of writing something successful has always been blending the personal with the made-up. It's dangerous territory, as some people recognize chunks of actual history and think we're being literal."
