Spotlight Lyrics

How come you ask me what I'm doing here
With my guitar in hand
I'm at the microphone stand
I think the reason should be very clear
You see the Spotlight it's for a good night
Something happens to you

And the same thing happens to me
So if I sing about the places you've been to
You can see them once again through me
But it's only me

So if you catch me handing you a line
Please forgive me ah but let me be
I've got to do it almost all the time
It fills a big hole in my young soul
Something happens to you

And the same thing happens to me
You can see them once again through me
But it's only me

Spotlight
  • David Crosby and Graham Nash are better known for their trio with Stephen Stills and foursome with Neil Young, but they also released three albums in the '70s as a duo, Whistling Down the Wire being the last. Their biggest hit was "Immigration Man," which made #36 in 1972, but they also reached the charts with "Carry Me" (#52), "Out Of The Darkness" (#89), and "Southbound Train" (#99).

"Spotlight" bubbled under at #109, but is one of their best-remembered songs. With lyrics by Graham Nash, the song explains why they perform. With no mention of money, groupies or the side-effects of stardom, Crosby and Nash sing about how being under the spotlight allows them to tell stories - and not always their own.
  • Graham Nash wrote this song with, Danny Kortchmar, who played guitar on the album. Kortchmar, who became a formidable songwriter in the late '70s and '80s, was one of the top session players in Los Angeles, appearing on classic albums by Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor and many others. He told us about writing this song:

"I had a chord progression and a groove, so I played it for Graham. It was just something I was fooling around with. And Graham being the kind of guy he is, he immediately started coming up with lyrics for it. Graham does that. He's not one of these grooving guys that sits and waits for the muse to hit him forever and ever. He starts writing right away. He's written a lot of songs. He's a prolific writer and he comes right to the point.

Graham is from the old school. He grew up in the early '60s when he was playing rock & roll with the Hollies and you didn't have a lot of time to meditate on what you wanted to say. You had to come up with something right then, and that's his way of writing." (here's our full Danny Kortchmar interview .)

    Mx Lyrics

    You're so sweet
    Your smile
    Your magazine and
    Your bones
    You're on fire
    You move me
    Like music
    With your style

    Let me think
    About girls
    And money
    And new clothes
    Thirty nights of violence
    And sugar to love

    Come here, come here
    Closer to the lung so
    I can, I can
    Shove her over railing

    You're sweet, but I'm tired
    Of proving this love
    You're a bore
    But you move me
    Like a movie
    That you are

    Let me think
    (Think about what?)
    About girls
    (And what else)
    And money
    And new clothes
    (And what do it get?)
Thirty nights (uhh-huh) of violence (yeah)
    And sugar to love

    Come here, come here
    Closer to the lung so
    I can, I can

    Mx
  • Lead singer Chino Moreno: "I didn't really like Mx that much, and I had completely different vocals than I had written in the practice place when we were writing it. When I was recording the vocals in the control room, and I started to say to myself, 'This is boring. Throw this song away or stop rolling the tape.' And I just wrote a whole new song over the actual music. New melodies, new whole idea. It was just something that I was feeling at the moment. And then Abe's wife (Annalynn) was there in the studio and I was thinking there are these parts that I'd really like a girl's voice on, so I asked her if she'd do it. She was like, 'I don't wanna do this' and I talked her into it. After it was all done I had a completely different song. Right then it became one of my favorite songs, 'cause it was something I completely changed around myself. It could have been just a normal, kind of boring song, but it ended up being one of my favorite songs in about an hour, with me just realizing that I can completely do whatever I want that completely changes it. So that was cool. I would just hit the old bottle of wine... I had a music stand with some of my lyrics on it, some candles burning, and instead of using a hand-held microphone like I usually use, I was using a really nice microphone. I just stood there and let loose. It was something I'd never done. I think that's how singers usually record, but on the first record I recorded everything live with the band in the room, with a little Shure 58 microphone. I'd never done it that way and it was a lot different. It was fun. It felt a little bit more personal for some reason, 'cause I was in there by myself, with my headphones on, and most of the record was recorded in the dark, and a majority of the record was recorded when I was drunk. So it felt pretty good. I thought it was pretty cool."
  • Drummer Abe Cunningham's wife Annalynn is the female voice.
  • This was first called "Max" because the riff was similar to something that Soulfly singer Max Cavalera would make.

I think it gave people an idea of what to expect."

(Creep) oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah,

(Creep) oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah,
(Creep) oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah,

    The twenty second of loneliness
And we've been through so many things.
I love my man with all honesty,
But I know he's cheating on me.
    Look him in the eyes,
But all he tells me is lies to keep me near.

I'll never leave him down though I might mess around.
It's only 'cause I need some affection, oh.
So I creep, yeah, just creepin' on,
On the down low, 'cept nobody is supposed to know.
So I creep yeah, 'cause he doesn't know what I do
And no attention goes to show oh.

    So I creep.
    The twenty third of loneliness
And we don't talk, like we used to do.
    Now this is pretty strange,
But I'm not buggin' 'cause I still feel the same.
I Keep giving loving till the day he pushes me away.
    Never go a stray.

If he knew the things I did, he couldn't handle me.
And I choose to keep him protected, oh.
So I creep, yeah, just creepin' on,
But I'll know. 'cept nobody is supposed to know.
So I creep, yeah, 'cause he doesn't know what I do,
And no attention goes to show oh.

So I creep, yeah, just creepin' on,
But I'll know. 'cept nobody is supposed to know.
So I creep, yeah, 'cause he doesn't know what I do,

    Creep
  • This song is about a woman who is not happy with her man, so she sneaks around ("Creeps") and cheats on him.
  • This uses a sample from Slick Rick's 1988 song "Hey Young World."
  • This was written and produced by the Atlanta-based producer Dallas Austin. Though he had already made a name for himself working alongside producers like L.A. Reid and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and hot acts like Another Bad Creation and Bell Biv DeVoe, "Creep" would be an important song for Austin because it proved he could write from a female perspective.
  • The trio had mixed feelings about the adulterous relationship portrayed in the lyrics. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins thought the subject was an important one. She told Billboard: "We thought that was a good relationship to talk about because a lot of people don't admit that's how they feel - that their man's playing on them and they want to be with him so they seek attention elsewhere, but they really want to be with their guy."

But Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was on probation for setting her boyfriend's (pro football player Andre Rison) house on fire, didn't like the idea and refused to contribute a rap to the song. Austin remembered: "The reason there's not a rap on it is because Lisa said, 'Dallas, I don't want this to offend people personally. I don't want it to interfere with my relationships. If he thinks I'm doing this, it's going to cause problems and I'm making a record out of it.'"

Left Eye also didn't believe in an eye-for-an-eye when it came to cheating. She threatened to protest the single by wearing black tape over her mouth in the video.
  • Austin held onto the song for six months because he thought it might be too corny, but when he couldn't get it out of his head, he decided to record it.
  • This was TLC's first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. They would have three more: "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty."
  • This won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1996. It was also nominated for Best R&B Song but lost to Stevie Wonder's "For Your Love."
  • The music video shows the group hanging out in their pajamas while T-Boz gets friendly with a trumpet player (played by former Janet Jackson dancer Omar Lopez). Two other videos were made, but went unreleased, including one that follows Chilli and T-Boz cheating on their boyfriends while Left Eye dances by herself.
  • TLC performed this on Saturday Night Live on the May 6, 1995 episode hosted by Bob Saget.
  • This was used in the 1995 movie Waiting to Exhale, starring Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon.
  • This was used in the TV series New York Undercover in the 1995 episode "CAT."
  • The song was inspired by a situation that T-Boz found herself in. "'Creep,' unfortunately, was one of my true stories," she told Billboard magazine with a laugh. "You're with a guy and he's not showing you attention, so another guy comes along and you're like, 'Hey, if you were where you were supposed to be, he couldn't be showing me attention right now!' I was in the middle of this drama, because the other guy was [my boyfriend's] friend, and my boyfriend was just not getting it together."

T-Boz shared her personal state of affairs with Dallas Austin, whom she grew up with in Atlanta, and Austin in turn penned "Creep."

I got my hands in my pockets
    And I'm crossing my fingers

Stone washed up and so slow

I'd take one in the Temple
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)

    I feel all amiss now
    I'm tossed in the scatter
And your eyes keep on shifting,
To the boys that don't matter
I've got my hands in my pockets
    I'm still crossing my fingers

I'd take one in the temple
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)
    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)

I've got my hands in my pockets
    And I'm crossing my fingers
I just want to be noticed
I just want to be noticed

    I'd take one for you
I'd take one in the temple (temple)
    I'd take one for you

    Temple
  • This song about taking a shot in the head for a prospective lover was penned in a South African hotel room. "Obviously things changed when we got in the studio, like the intro, but it felt like a '90s song to me," vocalist Caleb Followill told Billboard magazine. "That's when we were listening to a lot of music, and still when we play it, we crack up the whole time, this the most radio friendly song…"

The Mechanical Bull Deluxe edition bonus track "Last Mile Home" was penned the same night.
  • According to drummer Nathan Followill, the breakdown in the song is the band's ode to Irish rockers Thin Lizzy.
  • The band have performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live.
  • The song's music video splits between sepia-toned Super 8 footage shot around the band's home town of Nashville and shots of an in-studio performance of the song. "The Super 8 footage was shot by the band, myself and director Paul Greenhouse on the day of the video and the days leading up to it," said Casey McGrath, chief creative officer at the Phear Creative, the agency behind the clip. "Nashville (is a) part of the band's life that is extremely near and dear to their hearts."

A Prince and two Princesses of Leon can be seen on hand in the studio: Caleb's daughter Dixie, Nathan's daughter Violet, and Matthew's son Knox.

    Higher Love Lyrics

Think about it, there must be Higher Love
Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above
Without it, life is a wasted time
Look inside your heart, I'll look inside mine
    Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be

    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
Where's that higher love I keep thinking of?

Worlds are turning and we're just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and it's real to me
There must be someone who's feeling for me
    Things look so bad everywhere
In this whole world, what is fair?
We walk blind and we try to see
Falling behind in what could be

    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
Where's that higher love I keep thinking of?

    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
    Bring be a higher love
I could rise above on a higher love

    I will wait for it
I'm not too late for it
Until then, I'll sing my song
    To cheer the night along

    Bring it, oh bring it.

I could light the night up with my soul on fire
I could make the sun shine from pure desire
Let me feel that love come over me
Let me feel how strong it could be

    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
    Bring me a higher love
Where's that higher love I keep thinking of?

    Higher Love
  • Winwood played many of the instruments on Back In The High Life and wrote the music for the songs, but for this and many other songs on the album, Will Jennings wrote the lyrics. Jennings is a very successful songwriter who also collaborated with Winwood on the albums Arc Of A Diver and Talking Back To The Night, and went on to write "My Heart Will Go On" with James Horner for the movie Titanic. Jennings told us:
"I was born in East Texas and my mother and father's families were from Arkansas and the generations before were from the Deep South. My father's father was a Methodist preacher, a circuit rider, in Arkansas. My earliest memories are of the music in church and of my aunts and uncles singing the beautiful old hymns. 'Higher Love' is a generation past that, when things were not so much taken for granted, so that one has to plea, 'Bring me a higher love,' and the lines are all trying to explain why there must be higher love. A modern hymn, you might call it." (Check out our Will Jennings interview.)
  • This Track was Winwood's first #1 single as a solo artist. It also won 2 Grammys in 1987: Record Of The Year (beating Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and Robert Palmer's "Addicted To Love"), and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
  • Chaka Khan sang on this with Winwood, helping give the song a Gospel feel.
  • The Irish folk singer James Vincent McMorrow recorded this song for his 2010 debut album Early In The Morning. McMorrow's stripped down, almost ethereal version became a hit in the UK after featuring in a television commercial for the video rental company, LoveFilm.

    On The Chin
  • Caleb Followill's lyrics for this whiskey-soaked Country number were inspired by the support he's got from his buddy, JD. He explained to Billboard magazine: "We've always been each other's best friends, because that's all we had. We were picking up and moving, every town we went to we knew we weren't gonna be there too long, so we knew, 'don't make too close of friends, and don't fall in love.' Being in Nashville, I finally had a buddy outside of the band, and he was just kind of always, no matter what you need, he's there. He's just a good guy. And that song kind of came at a time when I needed a friend, and I wrote it about him. And he's scared of the water. He's scared of sharks."
  • For bassist Jared Followill, the song can be interpreted as being about the mutual support the family members have for each other. He told HitFix : "So many of our songs can be interpreted in so many different ways. At the time you can actually write something and it can be completely abstract to you at the time and then a year later, something will happen to you and and you'll listen back and be like, 'Wow, that song sounds like it was written perfectly for the situation.' But that song, particularly, the way Caleb started writing those lyrics, it was for one of his friends, his buddy, JD. It's actually about that, then you hear it and it can mean so much. It can fit so many different situations. It can be for all of us together, it can be for our wives. I like songs that are open to interpretation."

  • This Lori McKenna , Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose penned song finds Little Big Town singing about not being too serious and enjoying life to the very end. Released as the fourth single from Tornado, it was performed by the band on TV for the first time on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno during the program's September 26, 2013 episode.
  • Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman explained the song's meaning: "It's a great way of saying, first of all, we're all in beautiful relationships in our lives, and we don't want to live without that," she said. "It's a wonderful way of saying, 'I'm drunk on your love and I don't ever want to be without it."
  • Kimberly's first husband died of a heart attack in 2005 before finding happiness again with Stephen Schlapman. She told People magazine that the song hits especially close to home for her. "I have experienced what it means to lose the love of your life," she said. "And I've experience what it feels like to love again after great loss, so this song touches me so deeply in my heart."

Karen Fairchild, who is married to bandmate Jimi Westbrook added, "'Sober' reminds of me when Jimi and I first fell in love."
  • The song's Reid Long-directed music video was shot as Little Big Town crossed the country in 2013 when they served as the opening act on Keith Urban's Light the Fuse Tour.
  • Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook described the song as "hazy sunshine." He explained that while listening to the tune, he thought of "the boardwalk… those places that have the piers that go out, and they've got the Ferris Wheels and people holding hands."

    Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? Lyrics

A thought burst in my head
And I need to tell you
It's news that I for thought
    Was it a dream that
    Happened long ago?
I think that I just forgot
Well it hasn't been the first time
And it sure does drive me mad

There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy
There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
He makes a plan to take a stand but always ends up sitting.
Someone help him up or he's gonna end up quitting

    I shuffle through my mind
To see if I can find
    The words I left behind
Was it just a dream that happened long ago?
    Oh well...
    Never mind.

    Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?
  • Singer Billie Joe Armstrong remarked that in high school his teacher made him read The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. This classic novel was very boring to him and he hated reading it (the idea of forcing a kid to read was repugnant to Billie Joe). When he became an adult he decided to read it again, as it was "Punk Rock." The narrator and main character of the novel is an outcast named Holden Caulfield - this song is about him.

    Ribs Lyrics

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

We can talk it so good
We can make it so divine
    We can talk it good
How you wish it would be all the time

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

The drink you spilt all over me
    'Lover's Spit' left on repeat
My mom and dad let me stay home
It drives you crazy, getting old

    This dream isn't feeling sweet
We're reeling through the midnight streets
And I've never felt more alone
It feels so scary, getting old

We can talk it so good
We can make it so divine
    We can talk it good
How you wish it would be all the time

    This dream isn't feeling sweet
We're reeling through the midnight streets
And I've never felt more alone
It feels so scary, getting old

    This dream isn't feeling sweet
We're reeling through the midnight streets
And I've never felt more alone
It feels so scary, getting old

I want 'em back (I want 'em back)
The minds we had (the minds we had)
How all the thoughts (how all the thoughts)
Moved 'round our heads (moved 'round our heads)
I want 'em back (I want 'em back)
The minds we had (the minds we had)
It's not enough to feel the lack
I want 'em back, I want 'em back, I want 'em

You're the only friend I need
    Sharing beds like little kids
Laughing 'til our Ribs get tough
But that will never be enough

You're the only friend I need
    Sharing beds like little kids
Laughing 'til our ribs get tough
But that will never be enough

  • Lorde penned this song about the apprehension that comes with getting older. "I'm in an industry where so much importance is placed on the fact that I'm 16," she told MTV News, "so that song is kind of about that."
  • Lorde explained to DJ Booker at AMP Radio that the song is about "getting old and rites of passage and being a teen and all that kind of stuff."

"It's cool because at the time I was quite stressed about this thing," she added. "And so I combated it by making this song super warm sounding and comforting sonically, which is nice."

    Must Get Out Lyrics

I've been the needle and the thread
Weaving figure eights and circles around your head
I try to laugh but cry instead
Patiently wait to hear the words you've never said

    Fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
    Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

    [Chorus]
    I'm lifting you up
    I'm letting you down
    I'm dancing till dawn
    I'm fooling around
    I'm not giving up
    I'm making your love
This city's made us crazy and we Must Get Out

"This is not goodbye," she said,
"It's just time for me to rest my head."
She does not walk, she runs instead
Down these jagged streets and into my bed

When I was fumbling through your dresser drawer
Forgot what I was looking for
Try to guide me in the right direction
Making use of all this time
    Keeping everything inside
Close my eyes and listen to you cry

    [Chorus]

There's only so much I can do for you
After all of the things you've put me through

    [Chorus]
