Vertigo

DeRulo wrote this song with his romantic partner Jordin Sparks. The American Idol alumni also features on the track. Speaking with Radio.com , DeRulo said it took a while for him and Sparks to merge their work styles. "It was a lot of fun actually," he said. "In the beginning when we started to work together it wasn't as fun, it wasn't as easy. We had to try to find each other's palette and we finally found it. 'Vertigo' is one of the products of the happier studio sessions. It's very stripped down and piano based so you can hear every emotion. You can almost see the story in your head."

Derulo (from OK magazine): "With Vertigo, Jordin and I recorded about six songs because I wanted to make sure I had the right song for the album. When I wrote Vertigo I knew it was it. It's just us and the piano so the emotion really comes to life."

I Believe I Can Fly

Kelly wrote this for Space Jam, which was a kid's movie starring Michael Jordan in a world of cartoons (including Bugs Bunny). The song was much more popular than the movie and became an inspirational anthem often played at weddings and used in video tributes.

Kelly got an early copy of the movie to view for inspiration. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Kelly said: "I studied it and I prayed over it because I wanted the best thing to come out of it."

This won 1997 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television.

Kelly may claim that he believes he can fly in this song, but in reality the R&B superstar has a chronic fear of air travel. Kelly is so scared of planes that he even takes boats when he tours Europe.

Speaking to The Boombox , Kelly revealed his creative process for this song: "When I met Michael Jordan on a basketball court at an athletic club - we hooped together in Chicago - he came to me and asked me if I wanted to do a song for his upcoming movie. I was like, 'Yeah!' I didn't even ask what it was. [Eventually] he let me know what it was, we went to a screening to watch it and that's when I ended up coming up with 'I Believe I Can Fly.' I knew from the first melody that was gonna be the song that was gonna take me out of R&B and into another genre of music."

Kelly added that the Notorious B.I.G. came around while he was writing the song and immediately saw its hit potential. "I was in a hotel in a deep sleep, so I kinda dreamt that melody," he recalled. "I went down to the lobby and had the security unlock the piano because it was locked. I started messing around with three-finger chords to give myself a guide with the melody. And I started hearing… [hums the melody of 'I Believe I Can Fly']. I had a lot of 'duh duh duhs' before I actually wrote what it is. But after spending two hours at that piano, watching a whole 'lotta women and men coming in back and forth, I was over in that corner on that piano. By the time Biggie came in [the hotel] it was like two hours later, I had [begins singing] 'I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky, I think about it every night and day, spread my wings and fly away' - I had about that much. He was like, 'Oh, B, that's a big hit, son.' And it ended up being exactly that."

Kelly co-directed the music video with Hype Williams. For most of the clip, Kelly sings in a cornfield but he eventually meets a choir in an auditorium. Scenes from Space Jam are also shown on a screen in the background.

That's How I Know You Love Me

Moore considers this soulful Justin Weaver, Rodney Clawson and Chris Tompkins penned love song to be the most honest tune he has cut to date. He told Radio.com that though he didn't write it, to him, "it's one of the most truthful, straight-to-the-point songs about me and my wife's relationship that I've ever heard. So I think that shows a bit of both."

Moore added that it is not only "probably my favorite song off the album," but "probably my favorite song I've ever recorded."

Moore admitted to CMA Close Up that he originally had concerns about recording this tune, but he was ultimately thrilled with the results. "I loved the song from the very beginning and I knew I had to cut it, but I was nervous about how I was going to sound," he said. "It has almost this Springsteen/Prince vibe. Those were just the things I felt we needed to do to continue growing this thing."

Teardrop

Massive Attack uses a variety of vocalists. On this one it was Elizabeth Fraser, whose lyrics were inspired by the death of her one-time close friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. The news that Buckley had drowned whilst swimming came while Fraser was recording this song. "That was so weird," she recalled to The Guardian in 2009. "I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway."

Fraser sang for The Cocteau Twins, worked on three tracks of Massive Attack's Mezzanine album and contributed to the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings - Fellowship Of The King.

Part of this is used in the theme music for the Fox TV show House MD. Massive Attack's Robert "3D" Del Naja told The Guardian February 6, 2010 that the band cut themselves out of a fortune with the licensing of this song to the show. He explained: "We got an email from Bryan Singer saying the entire concept of House was based on 'Teardrop.' We were flattered. We let him have it."

Singer, who was an executive producer on the show, was adamant about using the song because its music video, featuring an animatronic fetus singing from inside a womb, inspired the show's special effects. He explained to Ain't It Cool News :

"What I brought to the show was the idea of making that effect less CGI and using a more practical stuff, taking from the famous 'Teardrop' video by Massive Attack, building bladders and organ models and shooting them in water tanks to create a more viscerally real portrayal of the human body. I defined that element."

This won the 1998 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video. The song's music video featured a plastic fetus in the womb, lip-synching the song. 3D told The Guardian: "We kept the Teardrop baby but being made of old latex, it just doesn't have the longevity. It's now just a primitive animatronic half-creature in a puddle of rotten latex. It's still quite scary: it's like a museum piece, but for all the wrong reasons."

Part of this song was used in Season 1 of the TV program Prison Break.

In 2007 the British singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner released a cover of this as a download only single, peaking at #60 in the UK singles charts.

Two Step

This was the first single to be released by singer and actress Laura Bell Bundy after signing with Big Machine Records. The song melds country and dance music. She told Billboard magazine: "It was essentially a dance track - a country song written over a dance track, so it has the groove. Then, we wrote the structure of the country song over the acoustic instruments. The point was it's two-step, but not your traditional two-step. So, it's not the kind of two step where you have to wait for someone to ask you to do it. Typically, a girl will sit around and the only way she'll two step is if a guy asks her, if he gets up the nerve. This way, they don't have to feel embarrassed and can just get out there."

The country and western two-step, often called the "Texas two-step," is a dance usually performed to country music. Bundy told Billboard that her goal on this song was also to bring the two-step into the 2010s. "I wanted to put a more modern spin it," she said. "There's a lot of 'Teach Me How to Dougie,' 'The Cupid Slide,' or the 'Wobble,' and a lot of dance things going on in the clubs."

The song features a cameo from frequent collaborator Colt Ford. Bundy told Billboard that she has nothing but praise for the American country-rap artist. "Colt is awesome," she said. "We became friends, and met out on the road, and exchanged information. I had just completed doing the demo of 'Two Step.' I said I had this song, and I need a rap on it. It really lends itself to having that. So, I sent it to him, and he went into his home studio, did the rap, and sent it back. Then, I asked him to be in the video. He's just awesome."

In our interview with Colt Ford, we asked why he didn't do the two-step in this song. Said Ford: "I dance pretty good for a big ol' boy, but I'm not a choreography kind of guy. I like to do my own thing."

Alien Days

This dreamy, five-minute-long trip into psychedelia was premiered by MGMT on March 30, 2013 at the Festival Estereo Picnica show in Bogotá, Colombia. It was initially released on April 20, 2013 as a limited-edition cassette single for the Record Store Day campaign before being presented to the world as a free stream in promotion of their third eponymous album. Vocalist Andrew VanWyngarden told NME: "It incorporates some of the feelings that we experienced with the first two albums."

The child vocals were provided by Trevor, the son of Cool Little Music Shop's owner at Fredonia, New York where MGMT purchase some of their instruments.

I Kill Giants

This song was written for singer Alisa Xayalith's late mother, who died when she was seven. "I called the song I Kill Giants after a comic book I used to read," she explained to The Sun. "That song deals with everything I experienced. Sometimes it was hard to go back to it. I was so young to have this huge loss and so that song has helped me."

"It was a vulnerable process creating that song," she added. "I had to go back to that place so it was great to have the guys around me as support. The pain is still very raw."

The Last Ship

This folk waltz is the title track of Sting's eleventh studio album, his first full-length LP of original material since 2003's Sacred Love. The record grew out of a musical of the same name that Sting had been working on, which is set in a shipyard in Wallsend, England, the town where the real-life Gordon Sumner grew up. The show's storyline tackles the declining local shipbuilding industry, the passage of time and the importance of family and community.

Civil War

This song is politically charged, and has an entire verse about President Kennedy's assassination. It also deals with the Vietnam War and the battle for civil rights in the US.

Slash (Saul Hudson), Duff (Michael McKagan) and W. Axl Rose wrote this for Use Your Illusion 2, which was released simultaneously with Use Your Illusion 1. The song originally appeared on the 1990 album Nobody's Child, a fundraising compilation for Romanian orphans.

On September 27, 1993, Duff explained where the song came from in an interview with the radio show Rockline: "Basically it was a riff that we would do at soundchecks. Axl came up with a couple of lines at the beginning. I went in a peace march, when I was a little kid, with my mom. I was like 4 years old. For Martin Luther King. And that's when: 'Did you wear the black arm band when they shot the man who said: 'Peace could last forever?' It's just true-life experiences, really.'"

The speech at the beginning of the song is from the movie Cool Hand Luke: "What we have here is a failure to communicate..."

Part of the American Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is used at the beginning and end of the song, where it's whistled by Axl Rose.

The line, "Did you wear a black armband when they shot the man who said, 'Peace could last forever'" could be referring to the black hand's assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that triggered World War I. It could also refer to the assassination of John Lennon, who strongly opposed the Vietnam War. The black armbands a sign of mourning, so the whole line asks whether we mourned for John Lennon as many others did at that time.

This was the only song on the Use Your Illusion albums that featured Steven Adler on drums. The rest were done by Matt Sorum , who replaced Adler in the band.
