Lay Me Down Lyrics

I feel weak, things get tough
Sometimes my knees can barely hold me up
I'm no fool, but it's said
You gotta walk a mile 'til you're outta my head

Come within, taste it up
Take a little bit and baby don't you give up
Cast your light, give a damn
You gotta make a move and show me where we can stand

Lay Me Down in darkness
Tell me what you see
Love is where the heart is
Show me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need
(Come on)

Lay me down in darkness
Tell me what you see
Love is where the heart is
Show me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need
(Come on)

Tell me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need
Tell me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need

I got the time, it'll be alright, yeah, I got the time
That you need (Yeah)

We all weep, bleed the same
If you get the picture, leave it outta the frame
In the now, take a chance
Make a mess, and don't forget that life is a dance

Come within, taste it up
Take a little bit and baby don't you give up
Cast your light, give a damn
You gotta make a move and show me where we can stand

Lay me down in darkness
Tell me what you see
Love is where the heart is
Show me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need
(Come on)

Lay me down in darkness (Yeah)
Tell me what you see
Love is where the heart is
Show me I'm the one, tell me I'm the one that you need

Show me I'm the one tell me I'm the one that you need
(Yeah)
Show me I'm the one tell me I'm the one that you need
Show me I'm the one tell me I'm the one that you need
Show me I'm the one tell me I'm the one that you need

Mmmm-mmm me, show me baby baby tell me that's me, yeah
I got the time, it'll be alright, yeah
I got the time that you need. Come on!

Lay Me Down
  • This song finds Avicii collaborating with guitarist Nile Rodgers, who is best known for his work with Disco pioneers Chic and on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories album.
  • The song features the vocals of Adam Lambert, who first came to prominence in 2009 after becoming the runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol. Avicii said: "I really fell in love with his voice. He just captured something on that first take."
  • Rodgers and Lambert were one of several major talents that Avicii recruited for his True album. He told Rolling Stone: "I wanted to collaborate with songwriters who weren't used to electronic music, which was interesting from the start."

    Chest Fever Lyrics

    I know she's a tracker
Any style that would back her
    They say she's a chooser
But I just can't refuse her
She was just there, but then she can't be here no more

    And as my mind unwheels
I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives

She's been down in the dunes
And she's dealt with the goons
Now she drinks from a bitter cup
I'm trying to get her to give it up
She was just here, I fear she can't be there no more

It's long, long when she's gone
    I get weary holding on
    Now I'm coldly fading fast
I don't think I'm gonna last very much longer

She's stoned said the Swede, and the moon calf agreed
I'm like a viper in shock with my eyes in the clock
She was just there somewhere and here I am again
And as my mind unweaves, I feel the freeze down in my knees
But just before she leaves, she receives

    Chest Fever
  • The Band's guitarist, Robbie Robertson, felt he needed a counterbalance for the album's centerpiece, "The Weight." He wrote the music for the song solely for that purpose.
  • The intro to the song, played on an organ by Band multi-instrumentalist Garth Hudson, was the result of a very long improvisation. Eventually the improvisation quoted Bach's "Fugue in D Minor" and followed into the song's main riff. Only part of the improvisation was included on the actual album cut (the part beginning with the Bach quote). In live shows, the song became a Hudson showcase, with him improvising wildly on organ (and later, on synthesizer) before cutting into the song. This improvisation came to be known as "The Genetic Method."
  • Robertson, drummer Levon Helm, and pianist Richard Manuel improvised lyrics (Robertson often calls them meaningless) over the course of the song. Those lyrics remain unchanged on the track, although they loosely tell a story of a man thrown aside by a hard-drinking, fast-talking woman who subsequently literally becomes sick with love for her.
  • This was the opening song for the Band's set at the Woodstock Festival in 1969.

    A.M. Lyrics

    Everybody waitin' for the weekend
Getting off 5 in the P.M.
Wanna blow off a little steam and
    Go cut loose somewhere
Folks start showin' up at 7
Order up a Crown or a cold one
Nobody buyin' rounds for no one
No girls dancin' on the bar in there

    But in the A.M.
They go from getting buzzed into wasted
Might not remember what they're sayin'
Radio turned up and playin' loud
    A honky-tonk station
Spendin' what you spent the week makin'
Ask a little hottie what her name is
The whole world's asleep and we're wide awake in the A.M.

Leave around 10 and you're all right
    Everybody's cool, never uptight
But if you stay longer than midnight
You might end up in the middle of a fistfight

    Cause in the A.M.
They go from getting buzzed into wasted
Might not remember what they're sayin'
Radio turned up and playin' loud
    A honky-tonk station
Spendin' what you spent the week makin'
Ask a little hottie what her name is
The whole world's asleep and we're wide awake in the A.M.

    Radio turned up playin' loud
    A honky-tonk station
Spendin' what you spent the week makin'
Ask a little hottie what her name is
Hey baby, tell me what ya think about
Getting out of this place and
Let me show you my Chevrolet and
We can sit and do a little stargazing
Get a little bit of alone time, in the A.M.
    Yeah, in the A.M

Rag Mama Rag, can't believe its true.
Rag Mama Rag, what did you do?
Crawled up to the railroad track
Let the four nine-teen scratch my back

    Sag mama sag now
    What's come over you
Rag Mama Rag, I'm a pulling out your gag.
Gonna turn you lose like an old caboose,
    Got a tail I need a drag.

    I ask about your turtle,
And you ask about the weather,
Well, I can't jump the hurdle
    And we can't get together.

We could be relaxing in my sleeping bag,
But all you want to do for me mama
Is rag Mama rag there's no-where to go,
Rag Mama rag. Come on resin up the bow.

Rag Mama rag, where do ya roam?
Rag Mama rag, bring your skinny little body back home.
Its dog eat dog and cat eat mouse, you can
You can rag Mama rag all over my house.

Hail stones beating on the roof,
The bourbon is a hundred proof,
Its you and me and the telephone
Our destiny is quite well known.

We don't need to sit and brag.
    All we gotta do is

  • One of the Band's first large European hit singles, this had some unusual instrumentation. Lead pianist Richard Manuel played drums, drummer Levon Helm played mandolin and sang lead, and bassist Rick Danko played a fiddle. This left the bass spot open on this track, and it was filled by the album's producer, John Simon. He improvised a bassline on tuba, although he had no idea how to play the instrument.

    In Heart Lyrics

    Again, the same things part.
    Flames fuel the company.
    It's all invisible desperation.
Stop and stand and stare and break.

    Let it be, walk away.
    Ignore your instincts,
And let it be with the rest.
    And as the game goes.
    Turn back or burn down.

Through the bones we're all the same.
With burning wings we're led astray.

So we live with the dead.
Call it "the apathy of love".

    Name it "her majesty".
Tell her that everything will be fine.
And as the lust still grows.
    Ignore your instincts.
    Turn back or burn down.

Through the bones we're all the same.
With burning wings we're led astray.
Through the bones we're all the same.

Through the bones we're all the same.
Push past the tissue and we are to blame.
In blood and organs we fall apart.
And in our likeness we join In Heart.

Through the bones we're all the same.
Push past the tissue and we are to blame.
In blood and organs we fall apart.
And in our likeness we must join in heart.

    In Heart
  • This is the closing track of 8:18, the fifth studio album by the metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada. Their frontman Mike Hranica told Artist Direct : "The entire process of tracklisting and building the album, I always said, "'In Heart' has to close the album. This is the way the album needs to end. The vocals at the end of the song are the ideal conclusion to 8:18! That's my perception of 'In Heart.' It's the reflection of that song for me. It's way I imagined it. It's that big ending."
  • The song ends with Hranica exclaiming, "Oh my gosh, I want to jump out of a window now or drive off a bridge." The vocalist recalled to Artist Direct: "We were writing in Portland when I demoed out that song. I was at the condo we were staying at writing the lyrics and working on the vocal patterns for the song while the guys were at a practice space jamming out songs. I texted or called Chris (Rubey, guitar) immediately. I just lost my mind. I said, 'I just came up with this line for the song and it feels massive to me. It feels like the perfect end to the song, and it has to end the record.'"

    In The Flesh
  • This is the song on the album The Wall when the protagonist Pink finally yields to his inner demons and becomes a psychopathic, race-baiting fascist.
  • Pink's calling out of various minorities in the audience (that one looks Jewish, that one's a coon, etc.) is a reference to the meetings of the British Union of Fascists before World War II. in these meetings, the speakers would rant about how foreigners, minorities and socialists were destroying Britain. Near the end of his speech, he would identify members of various minorities in the crowd, who would immediately be roughed up by the blackshirts (similar to Hitler's brownshirts) and thrown out onto the sidewalk.
  • Roger Waters wanted this song to parody mindless stadium rock. He told Rolling Stone in 2010: "We needed a beginning, so I went into a room with a bass guitar and went, 'I need something that's really stupid-sounding. Really loud, monolithic, dumb.' And I've grown rather fond of that riff in the intervening years."

    The Enemy Inside Lyrics

    Over and over again
    I relive the moment
    I'm bearing the burden within
Open wounds hidden under my skin

Pain is real as a cut that bleeds
The face I see every time I try to sleep
    Staring at me crying

I'm running from The Enemy Inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

I sever myself from the world
    And shut down completely
All alone in my own living hell
    Overcome with irrational fear

Under the weight of the world on my chest
I buckle and break as I try to catch my breath
    Tell me I'm not dying

I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

    I'm a burden and a travesty
    I'm a prisoner of regret
Between the flashbacks and the violent dreams
I am hanging on the edge

    Disaster lurks around the bend
    Paradise came to an end
    And no magic pill
    Can bring it back again

I'm running from the enemy inside
Looking for the life I left behind
These suffocating memories are etched upon my mind
And I can't escape from the enemy inside

    The Enemy Inside
  • This punchy and melodic six-minute track was released as the first single from Dream Theater's eponymous twelfth studio album. Guitarist John Petrucci explained why they decided to make this the Progressive Metal band's first self-titled record. "I see every new album as an opportunity to start over," he said, "to either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career, and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We've fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic."
  • Petrucci discussed the song with MusicRadar.com : "'The Enemy Inside' is a great example of a song that hits you, it doesn't meander, and it has all of the compositional elements that make us unique," he said. "It has the metal parts, the prog parts, the solos, interludes, choruses – it's all there, but in a more concise way that packs a powerful punch."

"I wanted to write a fast-moving song on the seven-string with a big riff, a huge chorus and really fast, angular movements," Petrucci continued. "The irony is that we never intended for it to be a single, but it just kind of hooked everybody from the beginning. I always thought it would be a deeper cut on the album, more technical and fast, sort of a Panic Attack vibe. But it just turned out to be really catchy."
  • Asked by Ultimate-Guitar.com to define the kind of guitar sound he was going for on this track, Petrucci replied: "I describe it as a piece of chocolate cake and that was my goal in the studio. It's like I had a nice picture of a layered chocolate cake. Why chocolate cake? Well, chocolate cake is rich, creamy and it has layers. It's sweet but it has a lot of substance and has just the right amount of icing on the top. If you get this nice piece of chocolate cake there's nothing more satisfying than that. So I wanted that in a guitar sound - a chunky, rich, delicious sound (laughs)."
  • Petrucci told Music Radar regarding his guitar solo: "There's a bunch of different parts to the solo. I try to always keep it interesting, and I want everything to have a musical purpose. The solo comes in a little late; it goes right into the final chorus. It was sort of my job to come out of the previous vocal and get us to the end."
  • The song's music video was directed by Bill Fishman (the Ramones, Steve Ray Vaughan). The conceptual clip deals with the torment of a soldier who's struggling with reintegrating into his life back home due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Petrucci told Billboard magazine the PTSD subject matter seemed to really fit the song since it's fast-paced and has "kind of machine gun riffs. It almost makes you feel anxious."

He added: "Also at the time that we were in the studio working on the album and I was writing lyrics, the Boston Marathon bombings happened. There was a lot of discussion of terrorism and PTSD as if affects people who witness traumatic events like terrorism, so it was just very on my mind. It linked very well with the mood of the song, and as we started to get into it, I watched some documentaries and things like that. I was like, 'This is really something that needs to be written about.'"

Sleep reminds you takes you there, oh Annabel.

    Gentle whisper, endless winters, Annabel.
Why've they could have let you be both Annabel.

Land of the lines, of the years below still lies.
You are the truth they denied.
Run like the sea, tangled there in porcelain.
    Under the stars you begin.

    Annabel
  • This work of baroque instrumentation and hushed vocals finds Alison Goldfrapp sighing about a girl trapped in the body of a boy: "why couldn't they let you be both?"

The song was inspired by Canadian short story writer and novelist Kathleen Winter's 2010 novel, Annabel, about a hermaphrodite who's raised as a boy but dreams of being a girl.
  • The song's black-and-white video was directed by Alison Goldfrapp's romantic partner, filmmaker Lisa Gunning. It follows the adventures of a little boy in the countryside who is accepted for his true self by his mother, played by the singer.

    Everything I Own Lyrics

    You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, set me free
The finest years I ever knew,
Were all the years I had with you

And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give Everything I Own,
Just to have you back again

You taught me how to love
What it's of, what it's of
    You never said too much,
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you

    Nobody else could ever know,
The part of me that can't let go

And I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again

    Is there someone you know,
    Your loving them so,
But taking them all for granted?
You may lose them one day
    Someone takes them away,
And they don't hear the words you long to say

I would give anything I own,
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,

    Everything I Own
  • According to the book 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, at his father's funeral, a friend took David Gates aside and said, "Your dad was so proud of what you were doing." David agreed by replying, "My success would have been so special to him as he was my greatest influence. So I decided to write and record Everything I Own about him. If you listen to the words, 'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free,' it says it all."
  • In 1974 at the suggestion of his producer Lloyd Chambers, Jamaican singer Ken Booth recorded a smooth reggae cover version, which topped the UK charts. Booth sang "Anything I Own" instead of "Everything" but retained the original title, making it one of the few UK #1s not to have the actual title featured in the lyrics. In 1987 Boy George recorded his electronic dance-pop version, this time singing "Everything" not "Anything," and again it topped the UK charts.
  • Larry Knechtel played the part on the harpsichord during the chorus, and the kick drum was doubled to get a thicker sound.

    Life has been unfaithful
And it all promised so so much

I am just a petrified cry

The applause nails down my silence

    La Tristesse Durera
  • Manics guitarist Richey James Edwards (from Melody Maker, June 19, 1993): "We took the title from a book on Van Gogh, although the song's got nothing to do with Van Gogh. It means something like 'the sadness goes on,' and it's about the way life doesn't get any better as you get older. It's always a beautiful image every year when the war veterans turn out at the Cenotaph, and everyone pretends to care about them - but then they're shuffled off again and forgotten. I'm much more sympathetic towards older people than towards my generation - I think they have a lot more dignity, and seem to be able to take care of their problems themselves. People of my generation seems to be so selfish. I'm no exception, because you can't escape from the culture that surrounds you. A phrase like 'Trade Unionism,' and the idea of caring about the community you come from, is now seen as laughable - and of course, that's a product of the political culture over the last 15 years."
