What Sarah Said Lyrics

And it came to me then
That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time

As I stared at my shoes
In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409

And I rationed my breaths
As I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today

As each descending peak
On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines
And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

It sung like a violent wind
That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds

And I knew that you were truth
I would rather loose
Than to have never lain beside at all

And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself

Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
And everyone lifts their head
But I'm thinking of What Sarah Said

That love is watching someone die

So who's gonna watch you die

What Sarah Said
  • Sarah is an acquaintance of lead singer Ben Gibbard. The narrator is the one that is dying. His wife is standing with him waiting for his inevitable death and he is saying that he knew death would come for one of them at some point. She shows her love by standing with him, and he asks her, "who's gonna watch you die?" because he will already be gone.
  • This song very nearly didn't make the album. Ben Gibbard said on his record label's website: "It stewed for a year and a half."
  • Gibbard (from his record label's website): "The song was inspired by a friend. She was walking with her husband one day and just burst into hysterical tears because she realized that one day one of the two of them would have to watch the other die."
  • In an article in Paste magazine, Gibbard wrote: "I feel that songwriters are held to a different standard than almost any other type of writer - some fans get genuinely upset if I admit that a song that they held close to their heart was not based on actual events in my life. Like 'What Sarah Said': I was never in a waiting room in a hospital waiting for news that somebody was going to die. I've been in hospital waiting rooms before, waiting for a doctor's appointment, and I got a sense of the general vibe of the room - not a joyous place - and I decided to set a song there."

Just let me be great, let me be great
I feel like mothafuckin' Cassius Clay right now, Genius!
Don't be good my nigga, be great
After that government cheese, we eating steak
After the projects, now we on estates
I'm from the bottom, I know you can relate

    Fuck up the world
    Let's fuck up this world
    Fuck up the world
Me and destiny got a date

Martin had a dream, Hov got a team
My chain already heavy, don't let me get a ring
Parades down Flatbush, Confetti on my fur
Turn right in Red Hook, niggas heavy on the curb
See most my niggas died early twenties or late teens
I'm just trying to come from under the thumb of this regime
1% of a billion more than niggas ever seen
Still they wanna act like it's an everyday thing, clean

    Fuck up this world
    Fuck up this world
    Fuck up this world
    Fuck up the uh

High Yellow sky dweller and the rose gold
Legend of the summer in the Rose Bowl
Came through Pasadena in the low low
Just to show respect to the cholos
Feelin' like a stranger in my own land
Got me feeling like Brody in Homeland
I just want a shot to show my genius
Standing on the top hold my penis
America tried to emasculate the greats
Murder Malcolm, gave Cassius the shakes
Wait, tell them rumble young man rumble
Try to dim your lights tell you be humble
You know I'm gon shine like a trillion watts
You know a nigga trill as Michael Jackson socks
Sendin' light out to Compton and the hundred blocks
Lil bastard boy, basking on top

    Fuck up this world
    Let's fuck up this world
    Let's fuck up the world
    Let's fuck up this world
    Fuck up the uh

Sipping D'USSE boy this ain't your daddy yak
He in a Cadillac; me? I'm in the Maybach
This ain't grey sweat suits and white tube socks
This is black leather pants and a pair of Stance
Socks is my synopsis is clear
Got stripclubs feeling like Oxford, I swear
Teacher teacher, I'm trying to unteach ya
All the shit they taught y'all, they got you all in the bleachers
When you front row at the Knicks game, those the Spike Lees
You front row everywhere, you in the H.O.V.'s
    Jordan 1's and dungarees
And that's just the half of my warpath
Make a million another million let my niggas make a million
'til we all check a billion, shit it's just the way I'm feeling
We have yet to see a ceiling, we just top what we top
Cause the bars don't struggle and the struggle don't stop

  • The song title stands for 'F--k Up This World.' It finds Jay spitting about rising from nothing referencing along the way such African-American icons as Martin Luther King, Spike Lee and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali 's "slave name").
  • Jay namechecks Damian Lewis' character Brody from the US drama Homeland when he raps: "Feel like a stranger in my own land. Got me feeling like Brody on Homeland..." Speaking to Esquire, Lewis said about Hova's reference: "It's one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me. My natural habitat is quite a long way from, you know, a gangster rapper. So the fact I've somehow straddled popular culture to find myself name checked... From the RSC... To the Jay Z."

God Gave Me A Gun Lyrics

    God Gave Me A Gun
  • Clyne: "I was very conflicted. The time that this record was written was in the shadow of a war and then during a war. I know how I feel about war and how a lot of people feel about war, and it was hard to say if it was either just or unjust. As an artist, I had to report. These are tough times to make a call. If anybody wants to say I'm vacillating, they're welcome to, but these are times when black and white often collide and coalesce and right and wrong are not easy to pick apart. I think you can hear a lot of confusion in the record."
  • At the insistence of his manager, the band recorded and released the song in March 2003 as the United States prepared for war. "I had the song, but I wasn't planning on putting it out," Clyne says. "Our manager, Peter Lubin, said, "If you have any backbone as an artist, you'll put it out now and take a stand with the way you feel. God bless him for making me do that and we did. We recorded it and put it out the day after as a free download on the Web site. We pressed singles for radio, but the climate in America was so volatile and so polarized about the war that no radio station would touch it. It got shunned all the way around." The Beginning... Lyrics

Last night was the last night
    You'll ever spend alone
    Couldn't wait
Did it in the living room
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Plans to do it 'til we have a baby
Even if the world is crazy
Pick some names, boy or girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
    I'm ready, whatever time

    It's the beginning of forever
    You don't have to go
    Sometimes you just know
    It's the beginning of forever
    It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

Last time was the last time
    I was worn and done
You the best, that's why I want another one
Soon as I saw you, baby, I had plans
Planned to take you to my elevator
And cook a little breakfast later
Pick a place and go there, girl
Then we'll change, change the world

So after you change your clothes
Girl, if you change your mind
    I'm ready, whatever time

    It's the beginning of forever
    You don't have to go
    Sometimes you just know
    It's the beginning of forever
    It don't have to end
Keep doing it, and doing it again, oh

    The Beginning...
  • This promo single is from John Legend's Love in the Future album. The track was produced by long-term collaborator Dave Tozer and Hit-Boy, whose credits collectively include Jay-Z, Rihanna and Mary J Blige. It was written by Roc Nation singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy, who has penned songs for and with the likes of Drake, Big Sean and Justin Timberlake.
  • Tozer told SonicScoop about the production of spacy, minimal track: "It's very minimal with some haunting sounds," he said. "I'm using the sounds of the Mellotron a lot, giving the track depth and heavy mood."
  • The track samples "Winter Song" by Sarah Bareilles and Ingrid Michelson. Hit Boy brought in the basic sample and basic drum pattern for the song.
  • Like many of the other Love in The Future tracks, this song concerns Legend's relationship with his partner, the model Chrissy Teigen. The lyrics were inspired by his expectancy of a happy future with his new girl after their first night spent together.
  • When Legend showcased Love In The Future in front of an intimate crowd in New York City, he revealed that Chrissy was left blushing after playing this song to her parents. "She got a little embarrassed. The second line is 'We couldn't wait, we did it in the living room,'" he laughed.

You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison
  • This song is about a man who is involved in a crime ("In the middle of a gunfight, in the center of a restaurant"). He believes that the police will be unable to catch him ("Well they're never gonna get me, I'm like a bullet through a flock of doves"), but he is arrested and sent to prison. The rest of the song refers to prison life: "Will they give me the chair or lethal injection or swing from a rope if you dare." This refers to the thoughts of the prisoner. The line, "What they ask of you will make you want to say 'so long"' refers to him contemplating suicide and may also refer to prison rape and other abuse.
  • Bert McCracken of The Used provides backup vocals during the second verse of the song.

    Dark Horse Lyrics

Yeah, y'all know what it is
Katy Perry, Juicy J, Mr. Worldwide
    Uh huh, let's rage

    I knew you were
You were gonna come to me
    And here you are,
    But you better choose carefully
'Cause I, I'm capable of anything
    Of anything, and everything
    Make me your Aphrodite
Make me your one and only
But don't, make me your enemy
    Your enemy
    Your enemy

So you wanna play with magic?
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby, do you dare to do this?
'Cause I'm coming at you like a Dark Horse
Are you ready for, ready for
    A perfect storm, perfect storm?
'Cause once you're mine, once you're mine
    There's no going back! (Hey!)

    Mark my words
This love will make you levitate
Like a bird, like a bird without a cage
    We're down to earth,
If you choose to walk away
    Don't walk away.
It's in the palm of your hand now baby
    It's a yes or a no
No maybe, so just be sure
Before you give it up to me
Up to me, give it up to me

So you wanna play with magic?
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby, do you dare to do this?
Cause I'm coming at you like a dark horse
Are you ready for, ready for
    A perfect storm, perfect storm?
'Cause once you're mine, once you're mine
    There's no going back!

I'm an outcast, I got that!
    Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik,
    And that's just a start
My life, I took it from the back to the front, Rosa Park
Who cares what they bank or they bought
Who cares what they think or they thought
Baby, we can do it in the car
In the kitchen, on the floor
In the middle of the park (Woo)
I'm here to play with that little bit of thing
That pump blood through your veins, your heart
And all these petty little players acting like they can hang
    But they can not,
    Can't, won't, don't, never!
    Will! You! Be! Real!
One, two, three, four times, Cypress Hill
    Hey Ms. Perry,
Looking sexy with your fine self
Want a little bit of magic?
    I'm Maverick top gun
If you lookin' and you look no further, you got one!
    He! I got 'em confused
Is he Hispanic? or is he Caucasian?!
No worry about where I'm from,
Just know one thing, I'm amazing

So you wanna play with magic?
Boy, you should know what you're falling for
Baby, do you dare to do this?

    Dark Horse
  • This Dr. Luke produced ballad finds Katy with her sights set on a guy, and she won't take no for an answer. It was selected as a promotional single from Prism after the singer asked fans to choose between this song or the dance club heavy "Walking On Air."
  • The song features a verse from Juicy J. The Memphis rapper told RapFix Live host Sway Calloway about their collaboration: "Dr. Luke gave me a call and was like, 'Hey man, Katy Perry wants you to feature on one of her songs for her album' and I was like, 'Wow.' I couldn't believe," he said. "He sent me the track over, I did the verse and like a week later he called me again and he was like, 'She wants to meet you she wants you to come to the studio.'"

The recording process was something new for the rapper. "It was a little different. I did a lot of different versions to it. I recorded almost three verses because I wanted to make sure everything fit with the song and that she was satisfied," Juicy J said. "So it was a little challenging to make, but I've been doing this for a long time and I had fun doing it so it wasn't a problem."

Dr. Luke also served as executive producer on Juicy J's Stay Trippy album.
  • The term "Dark Horse" is used to describe a person whose abilities or possible course of action are unknown, or to a somebody who reveals unsuspected talent. The earliest-known use of the phrase was in novelist and future Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli's 1831 novel The Young Duke: A Moral Tale Through Gay. He described a horse race where, "a dark horse, which had never been thought of... rushed past the grandstand in sweeping triumph."
  • Uses of the term "Dark Horse" in popular music include a 1974 single, album and tour by George Harrison named after the phrase. The former Beatle also named his record label Dark Horse Records. In addition, Canadian rockers Nickelback gave their 2008 album the moniker of Dark Horse and Alternative rock band Switchfoot titled the first single off their 2011 Vice Verses "Dark Horses."
  • This song was co-penned by Sarah Hudson, who is a singer-songwriter and a member of the pop group Ultraviolet Sound. She isn't related to Katy (whose real name is Katy Hudson), however Sarah is the first cousin of another famous person with the same name: the actress Kate Hudson.

Other writers listed on the track are Perry, Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Juicy J, and Cirkut.
  • Perry revealed at a special album release party with iHeartRadio that the song was inspired by the 1996 movie The Craft, which is, "about warning a guy that if you're going to fall in love with me, make sure you're sure because if not, it's gonna be your last." The singer added that it reminded her of the moment she heard the Teenage Dream single "E.T.."
  • The song finds Perry playing seductress and putting a potential lover under her spell. She described the lyrics to MTV News as "kind of witchy and dark, as if I was a witch warning this man not to fall in love with me, and if you do know I'm going to be your last." Perry went on to describe the tune as having a "witchy, spell-y kind of black magic-y idea."
  • Along with Juicy J, Perry performed this song at the Grammy awards in 2014. She went with a witchcraft/enchanted forest theme, staging an elaborate spectacle where she emerged from a giant crystal ball and sang to an anthropomorphic horse. Those who believe in Illuminati found lots of evidence of Perry's involvement with the group in her performance.
  • The song hit the top of the Hot 100 after Perry performed it on the Grammy Awards on the previous Sunday. "This #1 is the most unexpected one I've ever had," said the singer. "'Dark Horse' has been a dark horse of a song, since August when the KatyCats voted to release it early on iTunes, before PRISM even came out."
  • Perry enlisted Matthew Cullen to helm the video in which she plays a mystic queen in ancient Egypt. The pair previously worked together before, on her "California Gurls" clip. Juicy J also appears in the visual, emerging from a mummy's sarcophagus.
  • Members of the Muslim community criticized the video, citing the part around the 1:15 mark when Perry kills a a male subject, who is wearing a pendant that forms the word "Allah," the Arabic word for God. The jewelry is also destroyed.

Following a petition, which was signed by more than 65,000 people, the pendant was digitally removed from the scene.
  • Perry and the other songwriters were taken to court by Christian hip hoppers Flame, Lecrae and John Reilly for allegedly stealing the beat from their 2008 single "Joyful Noise" for this tune.

The lawsuit claimed that the songwriters stole the track and presented it as their own. It was also alleged that Perry ruined the faith-based message of the song by creating a blasphemous video containing uses of witchcraft, idols and black magic. "The devoutly religious message of 'Joyful Nose' has been irreparably tarnished by its association with the witchcraft, paganism, black magic and Illuminati imagery evoked by the same music in 'Dark Horse,'" read the suit. "Indeed, the music video of 'Dark Horse' generated widespread accusations of blasphemy and an online petition signed by more than 60,000 demanding removal of an offensive religious image from the video."

Flame took home a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for "Joyful Noise" while the LP it's from, Our World: Redeemed, won the Grammy for best rock or rap gospel album.
  • A YouTube video showing how this song stopped a baby crying went viral in August 2014 and renewed interest in the tune.
  • This won Best Single at the 2014 American Music Awards. Perry also claimed the gongs for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Solo Artist and Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist at the same ceremony.
  • The song's video was the most popular music clip on YouTube in 2014, with 715 million views. It was also the most-streamed song of the year if YouTube views are factored in.
  • Sans Juicy J, Perry performed this song at the Super Bowl in 2015 when she was the halftime entertainment. For this part of the show, the stage was transformed into a giant chessboard, with Perry singing among an array of dancers in a postmodern, equine motif.

Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me?
Girl, It's easy to love me now
Would you love me if I was down and out?
Would you still have love for me girl?

If I fell off tomorrow would you still love me?
If I didn't smell so good would you still hug me?
If I got locked up and sentenced to a quarter century,

I'm asking questions to find out how you feel inside
If I ain't rap 'cause I flipped burgers at Burger King

  • Inspiration for this song came when 50 Cent heard a romantic LL Cool J song, and the girl riding next to him was clearly enjoying it. This convinced him to write a song revealing his softer side and his appreciation for women - something that most gangsta rappers shied away from. The song finds 50 asking a girl if she would still love him even if he wasn't rich and famous.
  • This samples a 1978 song called "It's Only Love Doing Its Thing," which was written by Jimmie and Vella Cameron. The Canadian producer Dirty Swift (Kevin Risto), who was half of the Midi Mafia production team, put the track together. He delivered the beat to an executive at Universal Music, which was trying to sign 50 Cent to a record deal. This executive passed the track on the 50, who put lyrics to it. When 50 signed with Dr. Dre's Shady/Aftermath label, he recorded the song for his first album.
  • Nate Dogg sings the chorus on this song, which was Dr. Dre's idea (50 planned to do it himself). Nate had a great track record in this line of work, dating back to his 1994 Warren G. collaboration "Regulate," and continuing on the Snoop Dogg track "Never Leave Me Alone" and the Ludacris song "Area Codes."
  • Released as 50 Cent's second single, this hit #1 in the US in May 2003, less than three months after his first single, "In Da Club," topped the chart. 50's label was planning to release a more uptempo song as his second single, but DJs were already playing "21 Questions," so it made sense to put it out.
  • When this song hit, its producer Dirty Swift concocted an answer song (in the very literal sense) called "21 Answers," which he had the female rapper Lil' Mo record.

    Lead a Normal Life Lyrics

It's nice here with a view of the trees
    Eating with a spoon?
    They don't give you knives?
    'Spect you watch those trees
    Blowing in the breeze
We want to see you Lead a Normal Life

    Lead a Normal Life
  • This song about mental illness led to questions asking if Gabriel was suffering from the condition himself. He told Mojo magazine September 2013: "I think the assumption was, you couldn't write about something like that unless you had experience of it."

Gabriel added: "I later discovered I had depression around the time of my marriage breaking up. But maybe there was something more there (long pause). Like actors in films, they say there is always something in a role that they need to work out. But mental illness was interesting to me."

Tell Me What You See Lyrics

If you let me take your heart, I will prove to you
We will never be apart, if I'm part of you
Open up your eyes now, Tell Me What You See
It is no surprise now, what you see is me

Big and black the clouds may be, time will pass away
If you put your trust in me, I'll make bright your day
Look into these eyes now, tell me what you see
Don't you realize now, what you see is me
    Tell me what you see

Listen to me one more time, how can I get through?
Can't you try to see that I'm, trying to get to you?
Open up your eyes now, tell me what you see
It is no surprise now, what you see is me
    Tell me what you see

Listen to me one more time, how can I get through?
Can't you try to see that I'm, trying to get to you?
Open up your eyes now, tell me what you see
It is no surprise now, what you see is me

    Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm

  • Zendaya is an American singer and actress, who is best known for starring in the Disney channel sitcom Shake It Up and for being the youngest-ever contestant on Dancing with the Stars. This song was released as the lead single from her self-titled debut album on July 16, 2013.
  • The track was composed by Paul "Phamous" Shelton along with Tiffany Fred, whose credits include "Kleptomaniac" by Joe Jonas and produced by Mick Shultz. Zendaya told Radio Disney that the tune combines several types of music. "It's one of those songs that's creating its own lane or genre," she said. "I don't think it's pop, I don't think it's hip hop, I don't think it's R&B. I don't even know where you would consider it because it kind of mixes that pop sound beat with a very R&B kind of melody."
  • The song was originally written for another artist, but after months of persuasion Zendaya was finally given the go ahead to record it.
  • Zendaya was just 17-years-old when the song became an international club hit, resulting in the irony that she's too young to ever get in to hear it. "Ha, I'm in a club and I can't even go to a club," she said to Billboard magazine.
