Man Of Constant Sorrow

This song was featured in the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, which is based on the novel The Odyssey. The song relates to the story: the line, "I am a man of constant sorrow. I've seen trouble all my days" refers to Odysseus and all the troubles he had on his journey home.

The Soggy Bottom Boys were a group that was made up for the movie with George Clooney as one of the members. The real voice was that of Dan Tyminski from the band Union Station, with backing vocals from Harley Allen and Pat Enright. Tyminski was later tapped by the EDM star Avicii to sing on his 2013 Bluegrass-inspired song "Hey Brother."

This song was first published in 1913 by the blind folk singer Richard Burnett. Some artists who recorded the song include The Stanley Brothers, Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia.

Melody Calling

The title track of The Vaccines' Melody Calling EP was penned by frontman Justin Young during Christmas 2012. He told NME: "I'd built loads of vocal stuff around the main chorus vocal, and then ended up muting the main part so all that's left is the harmonies – that's why they're all falsetto. It moves in a different way. It's not one you bang your head to; maybe you sway a bit more."

Unlike all of the Supremes' other songs, this was recorded in Los Angeles instead of Hitsville USA in Detroit. Holland-Dozier-Holland wanted the sound for this song to be different than the Supremes' other hits. After the song was recorded, they were dissatisfied with the way the bass and drums and percussion sounded, so these parts were re-recorded at Hitsville by the Funk Brothers (a studio band who worked for Motown).

Edward Holland, Jr. wrote the lyrics to this song. Of all the Supremes' hits, this song is his favorite.

This Disco and New Wave-influenced song was originally released on Double Fantasy, Yoko Ono's joint album with John Lennon, as well as the B-side of his "(Just Like) Starting Over" single. The track was remixed in 2002 by Superchumbo and released as a single, reaching #20 on the US dance charts.

Prevent This Tragedy

This song is about The West Memphis 3. They were 3 men from West Memphis, Arkansas named Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, who were tried and convicted for the triple homicide of 3 8-year old boys from the Robin Hood Hills in West Memphis. The victims, Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore were reported missing on May 5 1993. The alleged ringleader Damien Echols was sentenced to death, while Misskelley and Baldwin were sentenced to life in prison (Baldwin without the possibility of parole). It is widely believed that the 3 were wrongfully convicted of the triple homicide, seeing as the investigation was plagued by negligent police officers who failed to secure the crime scene and stored evidence in grocery bags. The trial also lacked any physical evidence and presented the facts that the 3 men liked heavy metal music and that Echols had an interest in Wicca as evidence against them. The trial was documented in the movie Paradise Lost, and several famous personalties have pushed for a retrial.

Almost Is Never Enough

This love ballad is a duet with The Wanted's Nathan Sykes - both singers are managed by Scooter Braun. Ariana recalled to MTV News: "I didn't know it was going to be a duet and Scooter just said 'Check your email'."

"And Nathan just sang the hell out of it," she added. "I thought it was Brian McKnight. I'm like 'Who is this?' Honestly I wasn't expecting it. I didn't know he had that in him. I saw him perform live on one of the radio shows that we were at together and I was like, 'Damn he can sing.'"

The song also features on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack. Ariana told MTV News: "The version going on the Mortal Instruments soundtrack is a much shorter version. The one that's on my album is very long. But I'm really excited by it."

This marked the first time Sykes hit the recording studio after undergoing vocal cord surgery back in April 2013. "I met Ariana at a charity bowling event thing, and she seemed lovely, and we kept in contact, and she's a really talented girl," Sykes recalled to MTV News. "I got the call from Scooter like, 'We want you to try this vocal. It's a really hard vocal, and she doesn't even know it's been turned into a duet.'"

"This would have been the first time I've recorded since my surgery, so I went in," Nathan added, noting that the team had to evaluate his post-surgery vocal ability. "I was really nervous. I've never been so nervous for a session, and went in and [did] what I like to think is quite possibly the best vocal I've ever recorded. I'm really proud of it."

Braun tweeted that the video for the track has hints of Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey's clip for their 1995 hit ballad "One Sweet Day." Sykes told MTV News that "One Sweet Day" is a good comparison: "Yeah, it's kind of that vibe, the sort of sound we really took to on the track, and we're both big fans of both those artists," he said. "The video's a really cool video. It was shot and recorded in the studio. I get to get on the piano at some points. It shows a really fun day recording the track."

The pair debuted the song live on August 10, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia, while Grande was enjoying a brief stint opening for Justin Bieber on his Believe tour.

This song is about a man who gives up his dreams and lives a life of routine monotony in order to accumulate money. He is the pretender.

In a 1997 interview with Mojo magazine, Browne said of this song: "I'm a big fan of ambiguity and its bountiful rewards, and 'The Pretender' is two things at once. This folk-flavored soft ballad finds Mayer duetting with Katy Perry. The pair had been dating on and off since the summer of 2012 and it finds the twosome trading verses about their love for each other. This was the first musical collaboration between the couple.

Perry sings, "You're the one I love," to close the track before bursting into a giggle. "I think that's just a love giggle," she explained to SiriusXM Hits 1. "It's like the ones that Mariah Carey had in 1990 and stuff like that. Yeah, I think I was going for that, I think I was just so happy, I love that song."

John Mayer told Billboard magazine that he wanted to write a melodic and confessional song about accepting who you love. "I started singing 'And my girl, she ain't the one I saw coming. Sometimes I don't know which way to go. And I tried to run before, but I'm not running anymore.' In 2013, modern-day times that's sweet. Because there's so many other things to occupy your time that you can do for yourself. That to say, I tried to be alone but I can't. This is sort of our generation."

Mayer told Billboard that the idea of the gentle, breezy song could be described as "I love you based on the fact that I've tried to run and I'm not running and I give up."

He added that Perry wrote her contribution, a verse admitting "my boy was not the one that I saw coming, some have said his heart's too hard to hold."

Mayer continued: "I immediately thought about Katy and I was like, what a cool voice. What a cool artistic personality to have on. It was a really fun opportunity for her to write like, her answer to that. So you get these two sides to this relationship that are brutally honest but no less universal."

Speaking with US radio station Z100, Mayer admitted that he initially had reservations over the collaboration. Said Mayer: "I had this idea that just sat around for a while and I thought, 'Maybe I'll finish it some day', and I played it for Don Was who was producing the record with me and he said, 'Get Katy to sing on it'. 'Now, he could say that because he doesn't have to worry about all the hang-ups that I'd have to worry about.''

Mayer added that despite their different methods of working, the pair were "professional" while recording the duet. "She was an artist in the studio and partner out of the studio. It was really professional," he explained. ''There was a moment where she was like, 'Let me just go through it once', and the way I work is, 'Let's get this and that and that', and she was like, 'Let me try it my way.'"

"We were just fine before we met each other, that's what we say," he continued, "'You were fine before I met you, you don't need my advice,' and vice versa."

The song's music video was directed by Sophie Muller (Rihanna's "Stay," Pink's "True Love.") The clip features scenes of various couples, including Mayer and Perry, riding a mechanical bull. Mayer said during an interview on Good Morning America: "We set the casting call out for real couples. So it's just so authentic. There's nothing scripted in that video, except maybe putting a bull in the desert."

As for why why the couple decided to ride a mechanical bull in the visual, Perry explained. "Relationships are like riding a bull. You get back on."

Fame

Fame was a 1980 movie about students at Fiorello LaGuardia High, also known as the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. It's a real school whose alumni include Robert De Niro, Jennifer Aniston, Liza Minnelli and Nicki Minaj. The movie was fictional, following some of the students who aspired to stardom. Irene Cara played the role of Coco Hernandez in the film and also sang this title song. The song captured the spirit of the students determined to make sure people remember their names.

Lesley Gore's brother Michael Gore was the musical supervisor on Fame and responsible for coming up with the songs for the movie. He wrote this song with Dean Pitchford, a stage and commercial actor with a degree in English literature from Yale. Pitchford studied songwriting with Peter Allen ("I Honestly Love You," "Don't Cry Out Loud") and Gore gave him a big break when he asked him to write some lyrics for the movie. Pitchford co-wrote the title song and also "I Sing the Body Electric" and "Red Light," which were included in the film. When we spoke with Pitchford in 2012 , he told us: "At the time it was exactly what I had been living for the last six or seven years in New York. Had I stopped that and gotten further away from it in years, perhaps it wouldn't have been as heartfelt as it was. But both 'Fame' and 'The Body Electric' were both real available to me.

Gore and Pitchford later collaborated on "All The Man I Need," which was a hit for Whitney Houston in 1990. Soon after Fame Pitchford started work on his screenplay that would become Footloose.

Dean Pitchford tells us that this song took about a month to write. "That was excruciating, because it was very tough to navigate," He said. "You know, the idea of fame is such a pumped up, almost self-congratulatory notion, like, I'm going to be famous. It was very tricky to navigate and write something that still had energy and gosh-golly about it, without feeling too self-satisfied."

This won the 1980 Oscar for Best Original Song, and Michael Gore also won for Best Score for his work on the movie. Three years later, Irene Cara won the Best Original Song award along with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey for writing "Flashdance... What a Feeling," which she also performed.

A very distinctive feature of this song are the background vocals that trail out the word "Remember" after the line "baby, remember my name." It was Luther Vandross who came up with that part and sang it with backup singers Vivian Cherry and Vicki Sue Robinson (best known for her hit "Turn The Beat Around"). Vandross was not yet a solo star, but was in demand as a backup vocalist. He was the contractor on this session, meaning he was in charge of the backup vocals. Dean Pitchford explained: "He came in, listened down to the track. We got to the end of the chorus and he said, 'Back it up, back it up! Check this out.' And Irene Cara sang, 'Baby remember my name,' and he went, 'Remember, remember, remember...' and we all went, 'Oh! That's terrific!' Luther Vandross is the one who not only came up with 'remember, remember, remember...' but he also stacked the voices on top of, 'I'm going to learn how to fly high.' He did that. He made a couple of other contributions around the edges, but the 'remember' was the major one."

The movie was spun off into a TV show in 1982, with this song used at the theme and sung by Erica Gimpel, who played Coco Hernandez in this version (Janet Jackson was on the show for a season). When the song was first released in 1980, it flopped in the UK, but two years later it hit #1 as a result of the TV series.

The line "I'm gonna live forever" is one Dean Pitchford knew very well when he started writing this song. Says Dean, "There was a play that had been on Broadway years ago called Dylan, and it won massive amounts of awards when it was on Broadway. It was about the life of the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas. When I was in high school I competed in speech tournaments and I was a debater, but I also did dramatic interp and things like that. There was a particular long speech that Dylan Thomas gives. He's drunk and he speaks about the gift that a poet gets: he may not have a long life, but in his poems he gets to live forever. And I competed with this, I went all the way to the state finals delivering this speech. And I always loved the sentiment in poetry: if you write words, you get to live forever in your works.

I wrote that line when Michael Gore played me the melody that he had come up with for the chorus. I listened down to it once, and I said, 'Oh, you mean something like...' and he went back to the top and he was playing it down, and I sang, 'Fame! I'm gonna live forever,' and he stopped playing, and he went, 'Oh my god! Write that down! I don't want to forget that!' And I said, 'Oh, Michael, I don't think I could forget that one.' The rest of the song took forever to write. It was literally a month of six days, seven days a week, six hours a day of carving every one of those verses. But that line sprang out of my mouth."

Lyricists can be very particular about how their words are sung, lest the be misinterpreted. He was new at this, so Dean Pitchford didn't push it, but in later years he became more a of "lyric policeman," even asking Barbra Streisand to redo a line in his song "If I Never Met You." Said Pitchford: "When I did 'Fame,' it never occurred to me that anybody would mishear Irene Cara sing, 'People will see me and cry, Fame!', but people have misheard that as 'die.' And I was horrified to find that lyric sites would write out the lyric to 'Fame' and state as if it were fact that I had written 'people will see me and die.' No. I had written 'people will see me and cry, Fame!' That would be their cry."

The movie Fame got a remake in 2009, with Naturi Naughton in a starring role and performing this song. Her version made #33 in the UK.

This uptempo track was released as the first single from Mike Posner's second album, Pages. According to the singer-songwriter it is "just a fun, fun song. Strong melodies… and it's about the girl that got away."

Posner titled the record after the notebook that he carries around everywhere he goes. "My album is called Pages because I write all my songs, and my poems and my goals in life in this notebook," he explained. "So I titled the album 'Pages, because it's really just a few pages from my notebook that turned into the album."
