This song was written by Queen guitarist Brain May. The lyrics are about the wars between colonists and Native Americans.

In a 1976 interview on Capital Radio, Freddie Mercury was asked how he managed to get such a loud noise on one record. He replied: "I don't know, it's down to Mike Stone our engineer. Dirty Little Secret

This song is about all those little secrets you keep inside. The dirty little secret for The All-American Rejects songwriters Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler at this time was that they were both in happy, long-term relationships with their girlfriends. This meant that Ritter (the lyricist), had to concoct some histrionics. In our 2012 interview with Nick Wheeler, he said, "We come from a small town, and until now we've both had steady relationships. So, you know, sometimes there's not enough drama or turmoil to write about, so he simply writes stories. And that's where the lyrics come from." (Here's the full interview with Nick Wheeler .)

The video featured postcards sent to the website Postsecret.com. The site encourages people to mail in clever, anonymous postcards containing a secret. The best of the bunch are posted on the site, with some captivating results. The All-American Rejects made a charitable donation in exchange for use of the postcards.

Nick Wheeler told as that some of The All-American Rejects' hits are songs they have been "scared of" during the writing process, since the tracks sound like they could be disastrous. The band is big on experimentation, and when they come across a sound that is not typical, they're not always sure if it's a terrible idea or a huge hit. Said Wheeler: "'Dirty Little Secret' was just an acoustic guitar and a vocal, that's all it was. We put off getting the full band in and coming up with the arrangement until the very last second. We were literally less than a week away from going into the studio, and we all four started jamming and tossing out ideas. We had the arrangement down within an hour and that was that. We ended up recording it and couldn't get the motherf--king thing out of our heads. So it turned out to be a good thing."

This song was featured in a the movies John Tucker Must Die, She's The Man and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. The plot lines of all these movies revolve around a secret of some kind.

The song was recorded in early 2013 at ICP studios in Brussels, Belgium, as part of the Big TV album sessions. It was produced by Ed Buller (Suede, Pulp) and mixed by Mark 'Spike' Stent. The track got the band excited – "it might be the most immediate White Lies song we've written," said vocalist Harry McVeigh to NME shortly after laying it down.

The Big TV album follows the adventures of an Eastern European girl hunting down her absentee father in a vast metropolis. This song finds the female arguing with her boyfriend back home about her constant drifting. Bassist and lyricist Charles Cave told NME: "That's the boyfriend's point of view of her – he's fed up hearing the same old excuses."

Cave told The Sun regarding the song: "This is where the anti-heroine is trying to mend her relationship with someone in her home town. Her reasoning is desperate and weak and I think this is a common story."

Need You Tonight

This was a throwaway song that became INXS' biggest hit. Andrew Farriss came up with the riff, and Michael Hutchence quickly added some lustful lyrics.

Farriss had the idea for the riff for this song while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He asked the taxi driver to wait for a couple of minutes as he'd left something behind in the motel. He kept the unfortunate taxi driver waiting for an hour while he quickly recorded the riff and eventually returned to a very frustrated driver with a tape.

This was featured in the 2000 film Coyote Ugly.

Kick is the best-selling INXS album, selling more than 7 million copies in the US alone. Other US Top 10 hits include "Devil Inside," "New Sensation" and "Never Tear Us Apart."

Bonnie Raitt covered this song in 2016 for her album Dig In Deep. She's a big fan of the band, and says singing this "feels exactly as sexy as it sounds."

This song evolved from a conversation that took place between band member Kenny Loggins and a longtime friend of his from the business side of music. During a live performance of the song, Loggins explains his desire to bring a female singer songwriter into the musical trio he was forming. As Loggins tells it, he flew to Nashville and met Georgia Middleman. Within one hour, they wrote a song together. The vibe was magical, and he was excited for what Blue Sky Riders might become. Upon returning to his home in Santa Barbara, he called his friend and told him, "I think I found something amazing. I might be on to something." The friend replied, "Forget it, you are too old. You can't start over at your age." That night Loggins would text Middleman the words "too old to dream." She then turned those words into what would become the chorus for this song.

Kenny Loggins wants the message in the song to reach people. On stage, he dedicates the song to "Everyone who thinks it's over and you have to get out of the way. Forget about it."

In our interview with Georgia Middleman , she explains: "I love 'Dream' because it says so much and really hits home to me, because any time anyone tells me I can't do something, that's the first thing I do. And, when somebody said to Kenny, 'You're too old to do this band,' he came to us and he went, 'uh, uh, we're doing this, we're going to do this anyway, We're not too old.' Our listeners and our fans, a lot of them are middle age, and they are reinventing their careers, they're finding a new career. Even in Nashville when I write with 20-year-old girls, they think that if they don't get their record deal now, they'll never get it, they feel too old. And it's like, God, that's just not true. That's why I love that song."

The song opens with a beautiful arpeggio picked on a 12-string guitar. The beat is simple and steady. It is an approach often used in songwriting when the artist wants to make certain the lyrics are not lost in the instrumentation.

This song is not what it appears on first listen. You might assume the lyrics reflect a back and forth conversation with two people that have a history together. Perhaps a strained romance. In reality, the lyrics relay the words of a man talking with himself. The words reflect the exchange between the head and heart. The man's heart wants to take a girl home. His head wants him to slow down and think it through, it may not be a good idea. A classic dilemma. The song delivers one of the finest lines from the album: "blah, blah, blah, in my head all day, I don't listen to a word you say."

The Honky Tonk backbeat is laid down right out of Bourbon Street. Close your eyes and envision Dr. John passing by. A boogie-woogie style piano kicks off in the first measure and does not stop until the final note. Not credited in the album's liner notes is a Hammond B-3 organ that highlights the song's defiant attitude. The vocals are handed off flawlessly between Kenny Loggins, Georgia Middleman, and her husband Gary Burr.

Blue Sky Riders is comprised of Kenny Loggins along with the husband-and-wife team of Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman. In our interview with Georgia Middleman , she explains the process that went into writing this song: "We talk about writing a saying. There's a saying that Gary and I always say to each other, which is the title of the song 'You're Not The Boss Of Me.' We're married, but we were dating at the time when we were making this record, and we always are really snarky with each other: 'Well, you're not the boss of me, you can't tell me what to do." We took that line and made it sloppy on the record. That's one of my favorites, because it's just so snarky and it's so much fun. The groove is really rockin'. It's like a soulful New Orleans groove. That's one of my favorites, and I love playing it on stage because you can dance to it."

This very psychedelic song is a nod to the divine, conjuring up images of nature's colors and invoking both God and Allah. Heavy stuff.

In our interview with Donovan , we asked how he came up with the vibrant images that appear in the lyric. Lines like:

Donovan explained that like many great songwriters - Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Bob Dylan among them - he dabbled in art and thought in terms of paintings. This song is an example of translating images on a canvas into words. "'Wear Your Love Like Heaven' was really a paint-ily song - watching a sunset go down," he said.

This song was used in the Simpsons episode "Weekend at Bernsie's" when Homer is partaking in Medicinal Marijuana.

Songwriters observe life and collect ideas. The beauty is when they turn despair into hope.

In May 2009, the Jesusita Fire torched over 8,000 acres in Santa Barbara, California. Nature's battle to survive and fight back provided Kenny Loggins the inspiration for writing this song. He took a bike ride through the same charred land in August of 2010 and cried as he rode through the devastation. In early spring of 2011, he finally saw hope in the scorched earth. He could smell new sage just beginning to return. He saw plant life trying to force its way back. He whispered to himself, "I guess it's going to take another spring."

Loggins wrote in his blog for the band's website: "I recognized how long it was taking for nature to come back from this destruction, but also, paradoxically how quickly and tenaciously life wants to rebuild, to send out it's shoots of rebirth, of the promise of a coming spring. I was immediately struck by an inner promise, of the awareness that my own personal spring was only one more season away. It was a message of hope for a heart still in repair, even after all the seasons."

In Georgia Middleman's Songfacts interview she was asked to the reflect on idea behind the song. "That was Kenny's idea," she replied. "He lives in Santa Barbara and they had some wildfires. He was bike riding one day and he said all the plants and the trees, the bushes, they were charred and he was riding through black. He stopped his bike and looked down, and out of one of the bushes there were green sprigs coming out of the black, charred branches. And he went, 'Oh my God, it's amazing how much nature wants to renew itself. And it will.' He said, 'It'll probably take another spring, but we're going to get the wildlife back, we're going to get these trees back. He said, 'It's kind of like life. Nature wants to renew itself, people want to renew themselves.' He came to us with the idea of, 'it will probably take another spring,' and we wrote it as an analogy to opening yourself back up to life after you feel like you've died."

Few instruments capture the mournful sound of a lonesome whippoorwill like the dobro. The dobro's first note, struck in the intro at the :09 mark, pays homage to nature's loss. It represents the sounds of wildlife and nature, the inspiration for this song.

Bad Company

Lead singer Paul Rogers denied in a 2010 interview with Spinner the reports that the name of the band, title of the album, and hit single came from the 1972 critically acclaimed Jeff Bridges Western of the same name. Rogers stated that he's never even seen the movie.
The singer added that he decided to go with a song with same name as the band as, "I think because it had never really been done, as far as I knew. I thought it was interesting to come out as a brand-new band with its own theme song."
So, where did the name "Bad Company" come from? Says Rogers: "It came from my childhood days. I saw a book on Victorian morals. They showed this picture of this Victorian punk. He was dressed like a tough, with a top hat and the spats and vests and the watch in the pocket and the tails and all of that. But everything was raggy. The shoes were popped out of the soles, and the top of the hat was popped out. And the guy is leaning on the lamppost with a bottle in his hand and a pipe in his mouth, obviously a dodgy person. And you've got this little choirboy kind of guy - a little kid, actually - looking up to him. And underneath it said, 'Beware of bad company.'"

There are times when you need to leave the studio to find the right atmosphere for a vocal (see: "The Boxer"). To get the hunting sound on this track, Paul Rogers recorded his vocals in the still of the night in the middle of a field under the moonlight. "It took about three hours to set it up, with wires and lends and everything, but when the time came there it was, and we just did it in the one take," he said.

Rogers told Spinner: "I wrote the song with that Western feel - with an almost biblical, promise-land kind of lawless feel to it. The name backed it up in a lot of respects."

The American metal band Five Finger Death Punch covered this on their 2009 album, War is the Answer. The band's guitarist Zoltan Bathory explained to Metal Hammer: "It's one that we've played live from time to time but never really thought about recording, but we've had so many emails and messages from fans asking when we're going to record it that we thought we should give it a shot. I think it's really important when you cover a song that you try to make it your own rather than just playing the original, but it's definitely come out sounding like Five Finger Death Punch."

Let the Music Do the Talking

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry wrote this song after leaving the band in 1979. He recorded it with his own group, The Joe Perry Project, making it the title track of their 1980 album. When Perry returned to Aerosmith in 1984, the band signed a new record deal with Geffen Records and began to sober up, leading to their wildly successful comeback.

Done with Mirrors was their first Geffen album, and a newly recorded "Let the Music Do the Talking" was the first single. This success would have to wait, however, as both the single and album sold poorly, mostly consumed by fans loyal to the band from their '70s heyday. Their resurgence would come two years later with the release of the Permanent Vacation album.

The Done with Mirrors album had an interesting packaging gimmick: the letters were printed backward so you had to hold it up to a mirror to read it. The single cover for this song was also printed this way.

Along with the rest of the album, this song was produced by Ted Templeman, best known for his work with Van Halen. It was Aerosmith's record company that paired them with Templeman, hoping he would deliver something along the lines of his previous Van Halen effort, 1984. Templeman and Aerosmith didn't click, and for their next album, Bruce Fairbairn was at the controls.

This is one of the few Aerosmith songs with no writing contribution from Steven Tyler. The entire song was written by Joe Perry; without Tyler's words, he simply wrote about how his music does the talking for him.

The band shot a video for this song, which was directed by Jerry Kramer, who had done a few Jefferson Starship videos and the Rod Stewart clip for "Some Guys Have All The Luck." Steven Tyler wanted to capture the live feel of the band, so the concept was footage show by a kid who sneaks a video camera into a show and films them performing this song.

The clip was ignored by MTV, who only warmed to Aerosmith after Tyler and Joe Perry appeared in the Run-D.M.C. "Walk This Way" collaboration. Within a few years, Aerosmith would become one of the hottest bands on the network, thanks in part to Alicia Silverstone's appearances in their videos.
