Cool Confusion Lyrics

Between Cool Confusion
And kung fu in the car park
Could the weekend be losing
That reactive spark

Even in the shebeen
Or down in the meat rack
Longtime I feel cold
To send Cinderella's shoe back

Along the length of the wire
Party jam on the line
I can't hear a thing
Can't get no number nine

Now we must get in touch
If the night is to burn
Someone out there in luck
Lend me your star for a turn

As heroes fix their hair
Some are saving their breath
Just on the walkways tonight
For a glue bag death

Screens flick in unison
Some gaze at the soul
From the tiers and the heights
Go for the fifteenth floor stroll

It's immediately obvious;
Anybody star-gilt
Would have left this club
Way before it was built

This strikes you so late
As the guy with the broom
Sweeps you and the bottles
Right out of the room

Now I wash in the factory
Confess in the tile house
I don't need to bleed anybody
To strike out

Today my godfather
He sent a note from the jail
Said go get 'em kid
But don't get chained to the rail

Between cool confusion
And kung fu in the car park
Could the weekend be losing
That romantic spark

Even in the shebeen
Or down in the meat rack
Long time I feel cold
To send Cinderella's shoe back

Cool Confusion
  • Collectively credited to the band as a whole, the lyrics were mostly written by singer Joe Strummer, who explained his inspiration for them: a visit to New York's famous Studio 54 disco nightclub. "I started to notice that stars with big egos would always swan into places, make an appearance, and swan out again. Whenever we went out, we'd always be in a place for the duration."

The lyrics reflect this, with references to superficial celebrity: "lend me your start for a turn, as heroes fix their hair."
  • "Cool Confusion" was recorded in the Combat Rock sessions at the Electric Lady studios in November/December 1981, and though it didn't make the album, it became one of the B-sides to the US release of "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" It ended up not getting a UK release until it appeared on the rarities compilation Super Black Market Clash.
  • The song is described by the band as "semi-electro dub-funk," and shows influences from their former producer and Dub Reggae star Lee "Scratch" Perry.

    Album: Super Trouper
    Released: 1980

    The Piper Lyrics

    They came from the hills
And they came from the valleys and the plains
    They struggled in the cold
In the heat and the snow and in the rain
    Came to hear him play
    Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody
We're all summoned by a tune
    We're following The Piper
And we dance beneath the moon
    We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon
    Sub luna saltamus

    They came from the south
From the west and the north and from the east
    They waited for the man
Like a parish is waiting for the priest
    Longed to hear him play
    Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody
We're all summoned by a tune
    We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
    We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon
    Sub luna saltamus

    He gave them a dream
He seduced everybody in the land
    The fire in his eyes
And the fear was a weapon in his hand
    So they let him play
    Play their minds away

We're all following a strange melody
We're all summoned by a tune
    We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
    We're following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon

And we dance beneath the moon

    The Piper
  • This was inspired by the Stephen King novel The Stand. The lyrics are about the rise of a fascist dictator. Bjorn says, "The lyrics deal with the fear that there will come a time when people will want such a leader again."

    Album: Cut The Crap
    Released: 1985

    Cool Under Heat Lyrics

    Rebels on the corner
    Rebels to the core
    Got a million dollar question
    What is livin' for?

Hey! Man can scratch a livin'
In a fat man's city class
    The teacher is survival
But soon the present will be the past

    So!
    Be Cool Under Heat
    Be cool under heat
    Be cool on the street
    Be cool under heat

    When you're rockin' down
    On a cold hard night
Pitiless eyes of the cityless souls
    Narrow in the lights

    Sorrow upon sorrow
Go ganging up in your head
You can leave it till tomorrow
If you can balance on the edge

    Hey!
    Be cool under heat
    Be cool under heat
    Be cool on the street
    Be cool under heat

When the baby and you got to fight
Go cool your love in the rain
When the match refuses to strike
Show that you really are in pain

    I'm giving you a warning
Gonna burn those blue suede shoes
    Swagger in the mornin'
    Prints up front page news

    Be cool under heat
    Be cool under heat
    Be cool on the street
    Be cool under heat

    Cool Under Heat
  • This was of many songs on the much-maligned Cut the Crap record which was heavily criticized by music reviewers at the time of its release. The lyrics are much more swaggering and one-dimensional from singer Joe Strummer, who appears to be trying too hard to come across as a cool Punk rocker and recapture the anger of his earlier lyrics for The Clash. "Where's his knack for a well-turned phrase?" asked critic Mat Snow in his NME review of the record.

    Album: Call Me Madam
    Released: 1950

    Mrs. Sally Adams Lyrics

    Mrs. Sally Adams
  • There are many songs about girls and women named Sally; if this is one of the less inspiring of the genre it is because it is a purely functional one. The first number from the musical Call Me Madam, like the rest of the songs in the show it was written by Irving Berlin.

In the 1953 film version, this brief number is performed by three women - secretaries or some such - who sing down their telephones:

    "Mrs. Sally Adams
Requests the pleasure of your company"
  • The song includes a tiny snatch of "God Bless America." When Berlin refers to "Mrs. Sally Adams, queen of all the madams" there is no innuendo or smuttiness implied, Mrs. Adams - played in the film by Ethel Merman - is a wealthy widow, and a person of some importance in political circles, hence the invitation to one of her parties. The song is also reprised at the end of the second act.

  • "Lichtenburg" is the fourth song from the 1950 Broadway production Call Me Madam, which has words and music by Irving Berlin. There is no such country as Lichtenburg, which might just be a hybrid of Lichtenstein and Luxembourg, but Perle Mesta, the real hostess with the mostess on which this musical was based, was appointed US Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1949.

    Lady Jay Lyrics

    Hear me when I cry,
    Listen to my song
    The jay, my lovely lady,
To the earth she did belong.

    I can't trace her,
    Lost her from my life,
But the manor lady's bright young son
Can take her for his wife.

    Under the forest branches
    She came to me,
Until the day she cried aloud
    A father I should be.

That was the last time that we met,
    I never saw her again,
For she took her life on princeton wharf
    To save my worthy name.

    She found death's open arms
And lay in them in grace
    I watched as icy fingers
    Clawed her lovely face.

Now I stumble through the mist
To where they laid her in the grave,
    And maybe I'll remember
    The flowers for my days.

    Far beyond the sand
    I will take your hand,
The spirit of our love will live forever.
    Far beyond the clouds
    We will laugh aloud,
The spirit of our love will live again.

    Lady Jay
  • This was inspired by a grave on Dartmoor; there is a photograph of it in Blowin' Free , the official biography of the band. Check out the grave in Song Images.
  • Bass player Martin Turner explained that in days of yore there was a young peasant girl who got pregnant by the son of the Lord of the Manor. When they couldn't marry she committed suicide. At that time, suicide was regarded as a sin, and suicides couldn't be buried in consecrated ground. After that, her lover used to travel there every day and place fresh flowers on her grave. Legend has it that when he died, fresh flowers continued to appear there every day and still do today.
  • Turner visited the grave with some friends on a windy winter's night and found it "A very weird, spooky experience".
  • Most versions of the story are far less sympathetic to the girl's lover than the one apparently heard by Martin Turner. Kitty Jay is said to have been seduced or even to have beep raped by a farmer's son who then abandoned her, and the flowers which are left on her grave are said to be placed there by "piskies" - Cornish fairies.

    Love Somebody Lyrics

    Love
Is it too much to ask for
    One minute to breath
Cause you take my breath away
    Like I'd never sink

You're the reason why cave men drew on the walls
The reason why after every summer we fall

You're the reason I never wanna sleep at night
Cause nothing that I could dream
It's better the you by my side

You know that I Love Somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody

You know that I, I'm so in love I can die right now and be fine,
    I need you tonight

You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody,

When you wake up with no make up
    You try hiding your face,
You know that I, and it's so cute,
    You don't even know
How beautiful you are in me

You're the reason why cave men drew on the wall
Why after every summer we fall

And the way the you look in those purple jeans
It's the sexiest thing I ever see

You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I you know that I,

I'm so in love I can die right now and be fine,
    I need you tonight

You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody

    When the games on
You wear the jersey of my favorite team
I yell at the TV, knock over my beer
You're not even mad of me
You know I love you baby

    I love somebody, love somebody
I know, I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I, I'm so in love
I can die right now and be fine, I need
    You tonight

You know that I love somebody, love somebody
You know that I'm gonna love you, gonna love you,
Gonna love girl, love somebody, love somebody

    Love Somebody
  • Nick Carter and Howie Dorough wrote this tune with producer Jordan Omley, who also co-penned the title track to Backstreet Boys' This Is Us album. Carter told the story of the song to Radio.com : "Jordan had this idea, we came in and sat down with him. The one thing that I can do is I can write lyrics, I can write melodies and hooks. I'm an all encompassed person. So, we just sat down and banged it out."

"He had this idea for a hook for 'Love Somebody,'" continued Carter, "and we relate to that so let's speak to it. We then came up with the first verse, second verse. It was a collaboration, that's what songwriting is, especially in the pop industry. It's fun to work with different producers that can give certain things. Different tastes and different feelings to each song."

    Doctor Lyrics

Doctor can you help me please
    I'm laying on the floor
I need a glass of something
Like you gave me once before
    I'll send my little messenger
He'll bring the money to you
He'll slowly make his way back home
There'll be no horror show today my friends
And me well be up and get away
    CHORUS:
If I fill your every need
    You won't feel so empty
In my web I'll bet your life
    You're dead before you're thirty
Doctor can you help me please
I trust you like my mum
I know that you won't stop me turning
    All the whole world on
You know that I'll always come to you
    When everything goes wrong
You pick me up, don't let me go down
To the horror show today my friend
And me well be up and get away

    Doctor
  • This song was inspired by someone Martin Turner and his brother Glen knew from Torquay, where they grew up. According to bass player and vocalist Martin Turner in the band's official biography: "The first time I saw her she really looked like a witch". She was a heroin addict and "used to send someone round to the doctor to plead for an extra prescription because she was lying on the floor with withdrawal symptoms" - which wasn't true. When she got the drug she used to share it with her junkie friends.
  • In October 2008, he expanded on this in his on-line question and answer forum:
"Doctor", he said, "was from an idea I had back in the 60s before WA. Musically a bit Who-ish again. The lyric was about my brothers girlfriend circa 67/68 whom I have to confess to having spent a crazy night or two with. She was a state registered heroin addict being treated with Methedrine or Methadone as it its called now. Beautiful girl, a successful model at only 16, but boy was she heavy duty. Had a bunch of young lads staying in her flat all of whom had run away from home, Mark Emery (Hobbit) would remember her. She blazed a trail and made it to her 30s but has been gone a long time now. Thanks for the song babe."

  • This dreamy ode to a girl finds Valentino eschewing recording contemporary beat-driven songs about sex for a jazzy tune filled with more affectionate lyrical content.

"Good night to you my soul flower
I hope you wish upon my star."

Valentino explained to The Drop.FM : "We all love sex, but we all talk about that. Let somebody be that one to step out and do something different or say something different, so that's how I feel."

Valentino added that releasing music on his own label, Blu Kolla Dreams, has given him more creative freedom in making the music he wants. "I've always been a situation where I had to chase a hit record or a song," he explained. "I've always had to go into the studio make a song that's a certain tempo so that the record company can work that song easily."

And all because I seen her.
Her hair was golden brown (yes it was)
    Blowin' Free like a cornfield.

    Blowin' Free
  • This song is about Annalena Nordstrom, the Swedish girlfriend of bass player Martin Turner from his days with Empty Vessels, an Ash precursor. They were playing at Torquay when there were about 200 Swedish girls on holiday. When he met her again in London a few years later, "She hadn't changed a bit."
  • In an in-depth interview with Lawrence Pugliese at the Moonshine Theatre, Scranton, during the 2005 Ashfest, Andy Powell was asked about "Blowin' Free." He said it was one of the very first songs they ever wrote, about 1971. Although he didn't comment on its inspiration, he remembered where it was written, at the Whisky A Go-Go on Sunset Boulevard.

By "they" he meant himself and Wishbone Ash as it was then, because by the time of this interview, he was the only remaining original member, having clocked up over 35 years with the band, (although the original bass player and vocalist Martin Turner was still performing as Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash).
  • In our 2013 interview with Andy Powell , he talked about coming up with the guitar riff on this song: "We were on tour with the Who, and I liked some of the chord progressions that Pete Townsend was doing, so all I did was take some of those ideas that he was coming up with and sped them up."
