AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson wrote this song with songwriters Mika Guillory and Morgan Taylor Reid. McLean told Rolling Stone that the Backstreet pair penned the song for their children: "Kevin was like, 'Why don't we write something that's about our kids or is a positive reinforcement-type song because there is so much negativity out there and bullying and all this crap that's been going on? The world needs positivity,'" he said. "Not only was it my daughter and his son, but it was all of our kids that were influenced and even other people's kids and just fathers, mothers, people that are the kind of people that encourage you to go out and to show 'em what you're made of, give it your all and the song turned out beyond what I ever expected it to be. It became this huge emotional record."

"I loved the music so much and I felt in my heart that the words had to be important," she explained to Radio.com . "I kept trying to write it and I kept procrastinating and I wouldn't commit to any lyrics for the song."

Robison played the demo to a few songwriters, and they all urged her to write the song herself, so she decided to create it around her philosophy on life. This fast-paced, hard-driving track finds FFDP frontman Ivan Moody unleashing his fury. The vocalist recalled: "When I started writing the lyrics I was so fed up. We were about halfway through the album and we had whole bunches of stuff still to do and the stress level just got me and this was just one of those lashings where you rip open your chest and let the monster come out."

A video was posted to YouTube showing nine-year-old Olivia Douglas being encouraged to swear whilst Ivan Moody performs the song on stage. A number of sources were quoted as being disgusted by the clip, which shows Moody hugging the little girl while trying to make her chant "Burn motherf---er burn." Last Christmas

This song is actually about a failed relationship; only the phase "Last Christmas," when the relationship came to head, refers to the festive season. Despite this it has become an annual Christmas standard on UK radio stations.

This was a charity record with its proceeds going to famine relief in Ethiopia. Apart from "Do They Know It's Christmas," which prevented this from reaching #1, it is the biggest selling Christmas song in the UK. (George Michael features on both songs).

Numerous artists have covered this song including Ashley Tisdale, Coldplay, Jimmy Eat World and Taylor Swift, who reached #28 on the Billboard country with her version. In 2009 a version by the cast of Fox-TV's Glee finally took the song into the Hot 100 when their rendition debuted at #63.

The song never charted on the US Billboard Hot 100 as it was released only as a promotional, not commercially available, 7-inch single in 1984.

Two chart facts:

"Last Christmas" is the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1.

In Japan it has sold over 600,000 copies, making it the best-selling single that did not reach that country's Top 10.

The song's music video sees George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley accompanying girlfriends to see friends at their home in a ski resort. The duo's backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie also star in the clip along with Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, the boyfriend and future husband of Shirlie Holliman.

The songwriters of Barry Manilow's hit single "Can't Smile Without You" sued George Michael for plagiarism in the mid-'80s, claiming that this song lifted its melody from their tune. The case was settled out of court with Michael giving his first year's royalties to Band Aid.

The song's music video was the last time that George Michael was filmed without a beard.

Antenne Carinthia presenter Joe Kohlhofer started his 8 a.m. show on December 18, 2015 by telling his Austrian listeners that he felt people in the area were not in the Christmas spirit. He then proceeded to play "Last Christmas" on loop for almost two hours as a "Christmas protest."

Kohlhofer blockaded the studio door with a wooden chair, locking out his co-host Patricia Jordan and the station producers. The Austrian DJ eventually stopped playing the Wham! tune only after his 4-year-old daughter was put on the line. She told her father that she didn't like the song.

There are two versions of this song on The Wrong Side of Heaven…, both featuring a vocal contribution by Maria Brink from In This Moment. It was guitarist Zoltan Bathory's idea to bring in a dirty but sexy feminine voice on the breakdown of the track. He told Metal Covenant : "We just needed a female voice for our low piece and we thought 'Just get Maria.' She's a friend and she can do it, but then she came to the studio and we said 'Sing these parts too.' The British 7 piece teen band S Club 7 was created in 1999 by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller. They were Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jon Lee, Jo O'Meara, Paul Cattermole, Rachel Stevens, and Tina Barrett.Apart from recording 11 UK Top 5 singles, including 3 #1s, and the US Top Ten hit "Never Had a Dream Come True," they also starred in a series of BBC sitcoms. These were Miami 7, LA 7, Hollywood 7 and Viva S Club and they featured the band as an aspiring group living in various American (and for the last series Spanish) locations trying to become famous. The group disbanded in 2003.

This tribute to life on the road was released as the lead single from Gavin DeGraw's fifth studio album. Co-written by the singer and Boys Like Girls frontman Martin Johnson (who also produced the track), the song moves to the rhythm of a brisk stomping beat. "I'm sitting in the room with Martin Johnson, the guy I'd been writing with before who's really gifted, and he's like, 'Hey man, what do you think of this track?'" DeGraw recalled to Billboard magazine. "He just starts playing this jangle-y, uptempo kind of thing, which ultimately was the foundation for 'Best I Ever Had.'" The song started as a crazy drum beat in the studio over which Johnson encouraged DeGraw to adopt a stream of consciousness approach for his vocals. He began to sing "Melt Antarctica, savin' Africa. I failed algebra" and Johnson added, "And I miss you sometimes." "I laughed because it was so off the wall, but at the same time that was the stroke that it needed," DeGraw told Radio.com . "The nature of the song, it almost didn't matter what we said. We had the freedom to say anything because the style and sound of the song, there's a bit of a beatnik Americana thing happening in there even though it's been modernized. It lets you be a little bit nutty as far as being a lyricist is concerned. It is very freeing."

Todd Rundgren wrote this song about his girlfriend (some would say groupie) Marlene Pinkard. Later known as Marlene Morrow, she was Playboy's Miss April of 1974. The writer and photographer Paul Zollo discovered in 2006 that she was homeless, living on the streets of Hollywood, and using the name Persephone.

When Rob Steen asked Rundgren if we was still dating Marlene when he wrote this song, Rundgren replied: "It was just around the same time. There would have been a lot of miserable material about her had I not got out of that state of mind."

In the Something/Anything? liner notes, Rundgren wrote of this song: "A shiver and a sigh."

The Card Cheat

Lead singer Joe Strummer, who wrote the lyrics to the song, noted in promotional interviews for the album that he had been reading the poetry of Sylvia Plath, and the darkness of her writing could well have been an influence on the dark lyrics of "The Card Cheat."

The song was recorded late in the London Calling sessions, and by this time according to reports, producer Guy Stevens was so inebriated he was unable to work most of the time, so guitarist Mick Jones was producing the recordings along with engineer Bill Price. It was Mick's idea to have everything in this song double-tracked, to create a Phil Spector-style "wall-of-sound" feel to the instrumentation ("That's the secret, two of everything" he said in a 1991 interview).

The lyrics continue the same themes of an outsider in society as other songs that proceeded it on the album, notably "Jimmy Jazz," "Rudie Can't Fail" and "Wrong 'Em Boyo." Contrasting to those other songs, however, "The Card Cheat" is incredibly downbeat, with the jaunty piano tunes contrasting with the lyrics about a lonely gambler finally running out of luck and being murdered in a card game ("The gambler is seized and forced to his knees and shot dead. He only wanted more time away from his darkest door, but his luck, it gave in").

The song features a horn section written and performed by The Irish Horns, who recorded all of the horn instrument sections on the London Calling album.

Due to the complexity of the backing track compared to the band's very spartan stage show, the song was never performed live by the Clash.
