Lola Montez

This song details the life of Irish born Lola Montez, (1821 – 1861) who became famous as an erotic dancer. Her infamous "Spider Dance" ensnared King Ludwig I of Bavaria and she became his mistress. "She's very interesting if you look into all the details around her; she was definitely shady," Volbeat frontman Michael Poulsen told BraveWords.com . "I just thought, how the hell? If you read about her, there's so many things that come up. She's been all around, flirting with a lot of royal men. At that time, having the kind of act that she had with her Spider Dance… people were coming to her show, the miners were throwing their gold in front of her because she would be lifting up her skirt so they could see everything. She was very controversial, but at the same time she was very beautiful and all the men were totally drawn to her. It's a very interesting character."

Volbeat debuted the song during the band's appearance in June 2013 at Germany's Rock Am Ring Festival.

Singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom also tells the story of Lola Montez in her 11-minute epic "Have One On Me."

Poulsen told Classic Rock magazine about his writing for the Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies album: "I wanted to bring in some characters that people weren't so familiar with or maybe had heard a little about," he said. "Lola Montez is not a typical character, the same with Pearl Hart. I wanted to find characters who were a little bit deranged."

"Mostly the inspiration came from books as I read a lot," he continued. "The same with Black Bart who is one of my favourite characters. Of those three names they are all real characters who were alive."

The first single from Filter's sixth album The Sun Comes Out Tonight, this song was written by their frontman Richard Patrick along with guitarist Jon Radtke and producer Bob Marlette. In our interview with Richard Patrick , he explained that they had been listening to the British Rock band Kasabian, which was an influence on the track. "They had kind of a cool groove, so we were inspired by that and picked up on that groove, and started writing around that," he said. "Then we put it into Filter chords, which is always way down by the third, fourth fret. You know, the third, sixth, and seventh fret. All that darkness all around in there."

The lyrical hook on this song - "Hey, hey, what do you say?" - is a common expression said in a variety of situations, similar to "Hey Man Nice Shot," a phrase that became Filter's biggest hit.

"I was thinking, 'Hey, hey, what do you say?' It really doesn't matter anyway, and everyone bitches and nothing gets done," Patrick told us. "Everybody spent a ton of money getting Obama into office, all the poor people, and as soon as he gets in, five guys from the Tea Party stop everything and now we can't even get the government doing anything. Everybody's screaming and yelling all at the same time and no one's listening. Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. No one's taking the time to actually sit there and listen. They're just out there making money. Rush does it for the money. Bill O'Reilly said he loves the money, he doesn't really care about what he's saying, as long as he makes money."

Patrick says that this song is "A take on this constant noise level in society." The lyrics came from conversations he had with Jon Radtke and Bob Marlette about global warming, and how powerless they feel as politicians refuse to take action. "The point is: what do you say, it doesn't really matter anyways," said Patrick. "When everything goes down, it's not going to matter. What's going to happen here, we'll laugh about it all one day. When it all goes down, the only thing that you'll be able to do is laugh about it and just throw your hands up."

Ariana Grande's second single from her debut album, Yours Truly, finds her expressing her special love for someone but admitting that she can't formulate her strong feelings into words. "Baby I got love for thee, so deep inside of me I don't know where to start," she croons. The song was released on July 22, 2013.

The song was written and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds (who is best known for his contribution to the creation of New Jack Swing in the late 1980s), Antonio Dixon, and Patrick "J. Que" Smith. The trio also penned together Beyoncé's hit single, "Best Thing I Never Had."

Several reviewers compared Ariana's vocal performance on the song with another singer who has a large vocal range and a whistle register: Mariah Carey. The Sam & Cat star told MTV News that her debut album was inspired, in part, by the superstar songstress. "You know I love just like old R&B. I love the '90s, that whole vibe. I love Mariah Carey, of course, she's the goddess of all vocals," she said.

The song has a strong nostalgia vibe to it. Ariana told MTV News: "I love that. It felt like '90s, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child. I like that it has that throwback feeling to it. And that's when I grew up and it was such a feel-good song to me."

Ariana told MTV News that she can relate to the song's lyrical content about getting tongue-tied when you're with somebody you like. "Personally when it comes to me expressing myself with other people, especially if it's towards the beginning of a crush or the beginning of a relationship, I'm so awkward and so flustered in that way," she said. "I'm always so nervous to express myself that I feel like it's a very me song in that way."

The song's 1990s throwback video was filmed July 28-29, 2013. "When I said 'I want it to look like this,' I said like a TLC, Fresh Prince type vibe," Grande told Billboard magazine. "I was like, 'Let's just get really silly, 90's amazing outfits, and just go out and dance around and have fun."

Ben Westbeech is an English musician originating from Hertfordshire who spent his formative musical years in Bristol, but later moved to Amsterdam. Trained as a cellist and vocalist, he also produces and DJs under the moniker Breach.

This party track was produced by The Cataracs, who first came to prominence with their contribution to Far East Movement's chart-topper "Like a G6." The LA Valley Electro-Pop duo originally consisted of Niles Hollowell-Dhar and David "Campa" Singer-Vine, but when Campa announced that he was leaving to do his own thing in late 2012, he gave his blessing for Hollowell-Dhar to continue on without him. Talk Dirty

The second single from Jason Derulo's Tattoos album finds the singer telling a girl who doesn't speak his language that all he really needs to understand is when she talks dirty to him. "It's just a shocking song," said Derulo. "People will be thinking 'Hmm, really?!' It's very out there, but it was so fun." The tune was premiered on BBC Radio 1xtra on July 22, 2013.

The song includes a contribution by American rapper 2 Chainz, becoming Derulo's first single to contain a feature. "Now feels like the time," he explained to Digital Spy . "I wanted to establish myself first and didn't want to lean on collaborations like some artists tend to do. I've always wanted my songs to stand up on my own, but the features have been really fun this time around."

The song debuted at #1 on the Australian Singles Chart, Derulo's second song to do so in the country after his 2010 release "In My Head." It also reached the top of the charts in several other countries including Germany and the United Kingdom.

"I learned throughout the year to trust my gut and what people around me say," DeRulo reflected to British newspaper Daily Star. "I had a feeling 'Talk Dirty' was the record. As I played it to people, they went nuts for it. You don't have to go into a lab and put this potion here and that potion there to find out what a good song is."

"'Talk Dirty' being my third #1 in the UK was pretty special," he added. "Beforehand there was such a big argument on what the next single should be after 'The Other Side.'"

The music video was directed by Colin Tilley on July 14, 2013. The director previously worked with Derulo on his clips for "It Girl," "Breathing," "Fight For You" and "The Other Side." Tilley said that they intended to embrace a variety of dance from different parts of the world: "We've got girls from different cultures that came and danced and brought out a different energy," he said, "and just created this beast that was really fun and exciting."

The song's production was provided by Ricky Reed, the mastermind behind the Hip-Hop and Pop music act, Wallpaper. The bass-heavy instrumentation samples the saxophone riff in a 2007 song titled "Hermetico" by the Israeli band Balkan Beat Box.

It was A&R man Miles Beard who picked up on the "Hermetico" saxophone riff. "Miles heard the song in January and played it for me on his phone in Los Angeles," Ricky Reed recalled to Billboard magazine. "As soon as the saxophone riff came in, I knew it was a hit waiting to happen."

After a video of One Direction dancing along to this song went viral, fans of the boy-band started making their own YouTube clips moving to the tune. Derulo latched onto the sensation, and enlisted other celebrities to appear in a "Celebrities Talkin' Dirty" visual. Released by the singer on March 14, 2014 to his official YouTube account, the short film included cameos by Bow Wow, Flo Rida, Ariana Grande, Enrique Iglesias, Larry King, Austin Mahone, One Direction, Jordin Sparks, Robin Thicke and Will.i.am.

An effective method for branding an artist is having his name mentioned by another voice in the song's intro. That's what Vanilla Ice did in "Ice Ice Baby" ("Yo Vanilla, kick it one time"), and that's what Derulo does here, with an exotic female voice saying "Jason... Jason Derulo" before we hear from him. This takes the guesswork out of knowing who sings the song. Another hit song to do this around the same time is "Dark Horse," which plugs its singers Katy Perry and Juicy J.

This also acted as the title track of Derulo's Talk Dirty album. The collection was sold solely in the United States, after Tattoos was only released as a 5-track EP in the country.

The song is very compact: it runs just 2:57, but gets in three verses, three choruses and a bridge (the "uno... dos..." part). The claps and horns are key elements in the song, making a great transition out of the verses.

DeRulo told Billboard the story of the song: "When I first heard the track, I loved it because it sounded exotic and Eastern," he recalled. "The chorus came to me immediately. I channeled my experience touring the world. You don't need to speak the language to communicate - body language is universal."

The official first single by American Pop duo Karmin, from their debut Pulses album, was penned by group members Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan with Sam Hollander (Big Time Rush's "Big Night," One Direction's "Rock Me") and Boys Like Girls frontman, Martin Johnson. The track was premiered on June 10, 2013 on Z100's Elvis Duran Show and was released on iTunes June 25, 2013.

The song is an ode to independence after the narrator realizes that her rich lover is a total dud. The duo flipped the the meaning of a cappella from singing without instruments to "I can do it by myself"' or "I don't need a rich boyfriend."

"Actually, 90% of the track was done a cappella," Noonan told Billboard magazine. "We went back there and made all kinds of weird sounds and chopped it up and put it in the computer."

The video was directed by Matt Stawski and was inspired by '90s music videos that the duo grew up watching. It uses a monochromatic color palette as the Karmin perform choreographed moves, which is something they've never done before on camera: "I actually enjoyed it," Nick Noonan told MTV News regarding his footwork. "To be honest I was a little hesitant in the beginning, I was like, 'I'm sorry, what?' But it wasn't even like someone else was saying it, it was us saying, 'Hey, we want to do this,' but I was still like, 'hey, I'm going to go for it and we're going to do everything and see.' If it looks terrible we've got to be straight up with ourselves though. You don't put a square into a round hole; you know what I'm saying? Is that the right analogy?"

Acapella is really spelled "a capella", but that doesn't read well, since it looks like a reference to something called a capella. The term means "without instrumental accompaniment," and comes from an Italian phrase that literally translates to "in the manner of a choir." Kellis released a song of the same title in 2010, and also used the "acapella" spelling.

The metaphor is apt in this song if the guy is considered the musical accompaniment. Note that "a capella" doesn't mean "solo," however, as a group of singers could perform in that style. Of course, ever since Rihanna's "Umbrella," Pop singers have been seeking "-ella" words, as they sing well and have some intriguing rhymes that can lead a storyline (fella, Cinderella...).

The song's music video was shot in Lissie's hometown of Rock Island, Illinois. "I wanted to shoot the video at home because that's where my earliest memories of heartache come from," she said.

"I wanted someone so bad who didn't want me back, and that experience kind of shaped my approach to relationships for years to come. The song is a cautionary tale to avoid those kinds of heartbreakers, so it felt right to go home and revisit that time."

Rewind The Film

This plea for nostalgia and comfort features a brooding, melancholic contribution from Richard Hawley. The Sheffield singer-songwriter told Gigwise that he and Manics frontman James Dean Bradfield clicked after they both contributed songs to Dame Shirley Bassey's 2009 album, The Performance. "I met James at that Shirley Bassey concert because we both wrote songs for her. I was sat at the side of the stage just watching her and completely in awe then James just came up and tapped me on the shoulder and we just sat together completely enthralled by Ms Bassey. We got chatting afterwards and it turns out that both of our fathers were first-wave teddy boy bikers. You don't meet many other people like that. It was a shared experience we had of growing up with people who were fairly fu--ing wild."

"We swapped phone numbers," he continued," and texted each other occasionally, but he was off having a family and a break while I was away on the road, then he just phoned me and said, 'We've written this song and all decided that you have to sing it or it won't go on the album.' So I just said, 'I can't let you down,' and it was a great honour I drove down to Cardiff in a day and it's a really beautiful song. I play a bit of Hawaiian guitar on it and it's me and James doing a duet. He sings one part and I sing another.

Nick (Wire, bass) wrote the words I sing and James wrote his bit, so it's a very personal song," Hawley concluded, "and I was surprised that Nicky wanted me to sing it, but now that I've done it I can see why. It's quite dramatic and acoustic."

Manic Street Preachers bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire explained the song's meaning to The Quietus : "It's a tiny bit heartbreaking, that song, he said. 'I want to be small, lying in my mother's arms.' It's saying, 'I'd like to do it all again.' It's not about changing stuff because it's been fu--ing brilliant. That's hard to put into a lyric. I loved growing up, I loved being a kid, I love my Mum and Dad and my brother, and then I loved being in a band, and doing education in between. Being very blessed in a very simple way - there's no extravagances in those years. It's about realising it's fu--ing over, and that's what permeates the sadness."

Impossible

This is the lead single from Ryan Star 's EP, Animals. The record was recorded by the singer-songwriter in Rhinebeck, New York with his touring band, which was a first for him. The song was recorded live in one take.

Star wrote this song around the same time as "Start a Fire" from his 2010 album 11:59, but he kept tweaking it and didn't record it until session for his 2013 Animals EP.

"Impossible" inspired the title of the EP. Star explained to Billboard magazine: "It stems from a quote I heard that humans are a hybrid between angels and animals. I feel this dichotomy every waking second and finally put it in this brutally honest song."

Ido Zmishlany produced the Animals EP. He thinks that he and Star work so well together because they come from a common ground. In his Songfacts interview , Zmishlany explained that both he and Star started out in bands from Long Island, so they understand each other's journeys of getting to the next phases of their careers. Zmishlany revealed how the tune was a telling of those experiences: "We had come from a similar place. I think that song was a reflection of it - a relationship that's stood the test of the trials and tribulations of doing what we do."

Having penned the music for this song, Court Yard Hound Emily Robison was struggling with the lyrics. This fast-paced, hard-driving track finds FFDP frontman Ivan Moody unleashing his fury. The vocalist recalled: "When I started writing the lyrics I was so fed up. It was guitarist Zoltan Bathory's idea to bring in a dirty but sexy feminine voice on the breakdown of the track. This tribute to life on the road was released as the lead single from Gavin DeGraw's fifth studio album. Co-written by the singer and Boys Like Girls frontman Martin Johnson (who also produced the track), the song moves to the rhythm of a brisk stomping beat. "I'm sitting in the room with Martin Johnson, the guy I'd been writing with before who's really gifted, and he's like, 'Hey man, what do you think of this track?'" DeGraw recalled to Billboard magazine. "He just starts playing this jangle-y, uptempo kind of thing, which ultimately was the foundation for 'Best I Ever Had.'" Guy Clark penned this account of a crooked smuggler of people over the Mexican border with Noel McKay of Texan Alt-Country duo, The McKay Brothers. "'El Coyote' was about a situation that really happened," said Clark. "Something spooked the driver, and he just pulled over to the side of the road, left 18 workers in the Texas sun, and walked off. Locked them in, and they all died. I just thought it was something that needed to be addressed. And Noel speaks really good Spanish, been around that all his life, too. So I presented him the idea of writing that song, and he was very helpful."
