Better Lyrics

You could find a way to ease my passion
You listen to the blood flow in my veins
You hear the teaching of the wind
Tell her why I'm alive within
I can't find the words
My mind is dead
It's Better by you better than me

Guess you'll have to tell her how I tried
To speak up thoughts I've held so inside
Tell her now I got to go
Out in the streets and down the shore
Tell her the world's not much living for
It's better by you better than me

Everybody
Everybody knows
Everybody
Everybody knows
Better by you better than me

You can tell what I want it to be
You can say what I only can see
It's better by you better than me

Guess I'll have to change my way of living
Don't wanna really know the way I feel
Guess I'll learn to fight and kill
Tell her not to wait until
They'll find my blood upon her windowsill
It's better by you better than me

Everybody
Everybody knows
Everybody
Everybody knows
Better by you better than me

You can say what I only can see
You can tell what I want it to be

It's better by you better than me

Better by you better than me

You can tell what I want it to be
You can say way all they can see

Better by you better than me

  • This is not a Judas Priest original - it was first recorded by the British rock band Spooky Tooth on their 1969 album Spooky Two and written by their keyboard player/vocalist Gary Wright, famous for his solo hit "Dream Weaver." On December 23, 1985, this relatively obscure cover song became part of a music censorship controversy when 18-year old Raymond Belknap of Nevada killed himself with a shotgun after listening to the Stained Class album while smoking pot and drinking beer. His friend James Vance was with him and also shot himself (apparently they made a suicide pact), but survived another three years. After Vance died, the families of the men filed suit against Judas Priest and their record company, claiming the words "Do It" were subliminally embedded in the song, and encouraged their children to kill themselves.

Earlier in the 1988, a similar lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne over his song "Suicide Solution" was dismissed on the grounds that music was protected under the first amendment, so the plaintiffs in the Nevada case took a different approach: instead of claiming that the lyrics compelled the teenagers to kill themselves, they claimed the subliminal messages did, and the Judas Priest was negligent for putting them in. The case was dismissed after a 17-day trial, with the judge ruling that the messages were not put there on purpose. The 1990 ruling stated: "The plaintiffs did not lose this case because defendants proved that subliminal stimuli have no effect on human behavior. Rather, plaintiffs lost this case because they failed to prove that defendants intentionally placed subliminal messages on the album and that those messages were a cause of the suicide."

We're smashing mics in karaoke bars
You're running late with half your make-up on
This method acting might pay our bills
But soon enough there'll be a different role to fill

    I love this feeling
    But I hate this part
I wanted this to work so much
I drew up our plans on a chart
Cars are flipping, I'm in hot pursuit
My character's strong but my head is loose

    She hits like ecstasy
Comes up and bangs the sense out of me

The tarot cards say it's not so bad
And the blades rotate there's just no landing pad
And better have said it but darling you're the best
I'm just tired of falling up the Penrose steps

    I hate this feeling
    But I love this part
She really wants to make it work
And I clearly want to let it start
    We'll build a water slide
As soon as I get home

Oh and she hits like ecstasy
Comes up and bangs the sense out of me
It's wrong but surely worse to leave
    She hits like ecstasy
So free up the cheaper seats

    Wild Boys Lyrics

The Wild Boys are calling on their way back from the fire
In August moon's surrender to a dust cloud on the rise
Wild boys fallen far from glory
Reckless and so hungered on the razors edge you trail
Because there's murder by the roadside in a sore afraid new world

They tried to break us, looks like they'll try again

    Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes
    Wild boys always shine

You got sirens for a welcome there's bloodstain for your pain
And your telephone been ringing wile you're dancing in the rain
Wild boys wonder where is glory
Where is all you angels now the figureheads have fell
And lovers war with arrows over secrets they could tell

They tried to tame you looks like they'll try again

    Wild boys never lose it
Wild boys never chose this way
Wild boys never close your eyes

  • This song is based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Burroughs. In the book, packs of adolescent humanoids ravage the civilized nations of the Earth. When wholesale slaughter erupts, the battle continues underground where the survivors evolve into The Wild Boys.

Duran Duran recorded the song because Russell Mulcahy, who directed their videos, bought the movie rights to the book and planned to make it into a film. The band wrote the song for the movie, which was never made.
  • At the time, this was the most expensive video ever made. It had a futuristic theme consistent with the book. Russell Mulcahy, whose work populated the early days of MTV, directed the video. He wanted to make a feature film based on the Wild Boys novel, but when that fell through he used many of his ideas for the movie in the video for this song.

Mulcahy's other work with Duran Duran includes videos for "Rio," "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Is There Something I Should Know?" He directed the first video to air on MTV in "Video Killed The Radio Star" and also directed videos for "Bette Davis Eyes," "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and "Allentown."
  • The band wrote this song around the visuals they imagined for the Wild Boys film that was never made, thinking about what it would look like as they wrote it. Duran Duran was gaining a lot of popularity as a result of MTV, with videos for "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio" in heavy rotation, but this was the first time they wrote a song specifically for the visuals, which ended up being the video for the song and not the movie. Another instance of crafting a song for a video is Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science."
  • This contains themes of homosexuality, as the "Wild Boys" in Burroughs book were homosexual warriors.
  • Nile Rodgers produced this song. He was a leader of the '70s Disco group Chic.
  • This is the only new song on Duran Duran's live album Arena, which became the group's best-selling album. It's also the only studio track on the album.
  • In the video, there is a moment where Simon Le Bon is on a wheel and keeps being spun so that his head goes underwater. During the shoot, there was a point when he was dunked and not quite ready. This was after he had been in a boating accident where his yacht had overturned. (thanks, Kelly - Portland, OR)
  • In an early use of this marketing gimmick, the single was released with six different covers: one for each band member and another for the entire band. Duran Duran was popular enough that some fans did collect all 6 covers. (thanks, Donovan Berry - El Dorado, AR)
  • One of the woman in the video dancing among the Wild Boys is Perri Lister, who was Billy Idol's girlfriend (and his bride in the "White Wedding" video). Lister was a friend of the director Russell Mulcahy, who had her wearing gray body paint and white hair.

Who's always there to make it right?

    Who loves you, pretty baby?

And when you think the whole wide world has passed you by
You keep on tryin', but you really don't know why
Baby, when you need a smile to help the shadows drift away
    Come to me
    Baby, you'll see

    Who loves you, pretty baby?

  • In this song, Four Seasons frontman Frankie Valli is addressing a girl who is clearly in a funk. He's asking her to think about who really loves her and who is going to get her through these tough times, hoping she'll finally realize it's him.

The song was written by original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio and a songwriter named Judy Parker, who later became his wife. Like many of the song Gaudio wrote for the group, the upbeat melody contrasts with a somber, lovelorn lyric. However, there is a bright spot. In our interview with Gaudio , he said: "'Who Loves You' is a dark lyric with a positive outcome: There's someone here for you, I'll take care of you. "
  • "Who Loves Ya, Baby" was the catchphrase of the actor Telly Savalas, who starred in the popular detective show Kojak from 1973-1978. Savalas also dabbled in music and released a single in 1975 called "Who Loves Ya Baby." Written by the Broadway composer Marvin Laird, the song finds Savalas imparting a sentiment similar to the Four Seasons song, as he sings:

When you're needing it bad 'cause rough times you've had
I'm gonna look at you and say, Who loves ya baby?

So was the Four Seasons song inspired by Savalas and his famous phrase? Bob Gaudio told us: "Everything that goes in my brain, in my ear, gets processed. Did I hear that phrase? Sure. There's all kinds of inspiration. Did I specifically sit down and say, I'm going to write a song, 'Who Loves You,' because of Telly Savalas? No.

I think John Lennon once said good songwriters don't borrow, they steal. And if he didn't say it, I said it. I'll take it."
  • In the '60s, The Four Seasons were one of the most successful groups in America, with a retro sound featuring Frankie Valli's falsetto. That sound fell out of favor late in the decade, and in 1972 the group signed a deal with Motown Records. Their Motown output had little success, and in 1974 they split from the label.

By 1975, disco was starting its ascent and The Four Seasons were ready to ride that train. The group's '50s sound that was retro in the mid-'60s was now cutting-edge a decade later, as Valli's falsetto suited the disco groove perfectly. Now signed to Curb Records, "Who Loves You" was the group's first post-Motown single, and it brought them back in a big way. Their next single was an even bigger hit and just as groovy: "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)."
  • Various versions of this song were released. The single runs 4:04 and is backed by a disco version that goes 5:28. A Spanish version was also released called "Quien Te Ama."
  • The Who Loves You marked a new lineup for the group, which now had five members and played their own instruments (previous lineups used session musicians to back the vocalists). Original member Bob Gaudio was no longer performing with the group, but was their producer and contributed vocals and keyboards to their studio output. The lineup for this song was:

    Frankie Valli - vocals
    John Paiva - guitar, vocals
    Don Ciccone - bass, vocals
    Gerry Polci - drums, vocals
Lee Shapiro - keyboards, string arrangement on this track

  • The lyric repeated at the beginning and end is "Jeux Sans Frontieres," which is French for "Games Without Frontiers."It is frequently misheard as "She's So Popular."
  • This song is about the childish antics of adults, which is especially prevalent when their countries are competing in the Olympics.
  • Gabriel wrote this before the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980. This reinforced the theme of adults acting like children over the Olympics.
  • Kate Bush sang backup - that's her singing "Jeux Sans Fronteires."
  • Gabriel got the idea for the title from a 1970s European game show of the same name where contestants dressed up in strange costumes to compete for prizes. A version of the show came out in England called "It's a knockout," giving him that lyric.
  • This was Gabriel's first UK Top 10 as a solo artist. It had an interesting impact on his American distribution: Gabriel's first two solo albums were distributed in America by Atlantic Records, but they rejected his third album (which contained this track), telling Gabriel he was committing "commercial suicide." Atlantic dropped him but tried to buy the album back when "Games Without Frontiers" took off in the UK and started getting airplay in the States. At this point, Gabriel wanted nothing to do with Atlantic and let Mercury Records distribute the album in America.
  • The whistling is Gabriel along with producers Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham.
  • In 1991, Gabriel's performance of this from Holland was beamed to Wembley Stadium in England as part of "The Simple Truth" concert for Kurdish refugees.
  • The video includes film clips of Olympic events and scenes from the 1950 educational film Duck and Cover, which used a cartoon turtle to instruct school kids on what to do in case of nuclear attack. (thanks, Patrick - Conyers, GA)
  • Part of the song goes: "Andre has a red flag/ Chiang Ching's is blue/They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu.

Andre could refer to Andre Malraux (1901-1976) the French statesman and author of the book Man's Fate, about the 1920s communist regime in Shanghai. Red flag may refer to Malraux's leftist politics. Chiang Ching could refer to Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) Chinese leader of the Kuomintang who opposed the Communists - hence, the rightwing Blue Flag. Chiang's forces lost the civil war in 1949 and fled to Taiwan, where they set up a government in exile.

Lin Tai Yu may be Nguyen Thieu (1923-2001), South Vietnamese president during the height of the Vietnam War. After the Communist victory of 1975, Thieu fled to Taiwan, England, and later to the United States where he died in exile.

The lyric could refer to the fact that while leftist politicians like Andre Malraux had a secure position in France, and rightist leaders like Chiang Kai Shek had a secure country in Taiwan, those caught in the middle like Nguyen Thieu were pawns in the Cold war and had no secure country. This could also be a reproach to either Thieu or his United States backers, saying that he was now a nobody.
  • A remix by Lord Jamar was used for the theme for the 2009 Winter X Games. The new version was dubbed "X Games Without Frontiers." (thanks, Justin - Durango, CO)
  • The singer recorded a German-language version of Peter Gabriel titled Ein deutsches Album. Hearing Gabriel singing about Adolf building the bonfire in German on this song makes it sound a lot more sinister.

Well, the streets are empty where we used to run
And the cars are all on fire
Yeah, we fall like leaves in the garden of Eden, Eden

Now remember how it felt being in the sun
When I heard the ancient choir
And the dead of night like an angel singing, singing

    Time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time to take me home

On a tree in the garden I carved your name,
    An word is spelled desire
Like an ocean deep with the waters even, even

And your love pours down like a waterfall
And I can't escape the tide
Here's my hand, baby take it or leave it, leave it

    Time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time to take me home-ooh oooh oooh oooh oooh

Now we're too young to recognize
    Nothing stays the same
Promise I won't be the one to blame

'Cause time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time doesn't love you like I love you

  • This is the title track of Mikky Ekko's debut album. It was also the last song he recorded for the project. "('Time') really represents a lot of what I went through to get this album done," Ekko told Billboard magazine. "And time is money. It's so valuable to not waste a second doing something that I don't love. That for me is just priceless."
  • Mikky Ekko wrote this with English producer Fraser T Smith, who has collaborated on such songs as Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" and Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart."

Ekko told UK newspaper The Sun: "Ironically 'Time' was the last song to make the album. Fraser and I went to the countryside. We both wanted to get away from the city and write a classic-feeling song. I'm a sucker for love songs so I pulled us in that direction. We finished writing after a healthy glass or two of tequila and I knew 'Time' was going to be the title."

    Can we film the operation?
    Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set!
    We need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on

  • This song is about unscrupulous newspeople doing anything for a story. Henley values his privacy, and hates it when reporters pry into his personal life. He had to deal with increased press attention when his girlfriend, Maren Jensen, came down with Epstein-Barr Syndrome. She recovered, but they broke up soon after.
  • Danny Kortchmar, who played on definitive albums by James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne, wrote this song with Henley. Kortchmar (sometimes listed on the credits with his nickname "Kootch") is a key contributor to Henley's solo work. In our interview with Kortchmar , he explained that Henley had the title and the idea for the lyrics, and the track came together when Danny came up with a riff on his Farfisa organ. Said Kortchmar: "One night I set it up, ran it into an Echoplex and started banging out that part that you hear on the record. I was up into the wee hours banging away on this thing. That's when I recorded it, and when I played it for Don the next day, I said, 'I think this is 'Dirty Laundry.'' He said, 'Yeah, that's it. Record it and let's go.'"
  • There are some very interesting guitar contributions on this song: Danny Kortchmar played the basic parts, Joe Walsh did the first guitar solo, and Steve Lukather did the second solo. According to Lukather, who is a member of the band Toto, he did his solo in one take and it's one of his favorites.
  • In November of 1980, Henley was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of marijuana, cocaine, and Quaaludes after paramedics treated a 16-year-old girl suffering from drug intoxication at his Los Angeles home. This incident was a big influence on the song. (thanks, Stevie Lee - WSFR, Louisville)
  • The lyrics make fun of news anchors who are more concerned with their looks than accurately reporting the news. Many local news stations have at least one "bubble headed bleach blond." The folks who work behind the scenes in local news are usually well aware of the superficial and vapid product they create, and many stations have used this song on their TV station blooper reels. Before YouTube, these local news bloopers lived on tapes tucked away in the dark corners of newsrooms.
  • This was Henley's first Top 40 hit as a solo artist, but it wasn't his first single. "Johnny Can't Read," which peaked at #42, was released first.
  • Henley didn't tour to support the I Can't Stand Still album. He went right to work on his second solo album, Building The Perfect Beast.

    Run Lyrics

You look like you just got off of work
And if I may assume, babe
You work hard but you don't get what you're worth
    Am I right?
    Let me take another guess
You're a little stressed and I bet your feet hurt
No I don't read minds, babe
I just know what it looks like
When a woman works all night tryna get her thing right

    Don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

Bartender, let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    Don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

See I was thinkin', over in the corner while I was drinkin'
See you've probably been lookin' for way more out a weekend
Than freakin' and watchin' the Sun fly so high
But you feel so nasty and don't know why
You tried all the things that you weren't gon' try
Like kiss body parts if it wasn't on a guy
But your girl's in the bed and it wasn't undivided
And wasn't no ambition, and everybody wishin'
We'd have did this shit way back then, why we didn't?
Even if you went too far, it's forgiven
You were high when you did it, everybody was trippin'
Promised you'd forget it, but everybody didn't
You're like, this ass doesn't land in the air, body mitten
And I don't just be lookin' on everybody's kitten
But you get in the room and my dick in the room
Make your forget about all the chicks in the room, like that

Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    I don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
Wish I could take you somewhere, my bride
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
Get all in your mind and see what's inside it
    Ain't gon' lie to you
I want you, how could I not with a booty so fat?
I don't wanna get on your nerves and test your patience
I ain't tryna do that, no
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
I would love the opportunity to rub your feet
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
If you with it, I got somebody sexy you should meet
    Ain't gon' lie to you
You had a long night, I'm just tryna help you end it right
So if I may be so bold, can I get you one more to go?

Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    Don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

    Run Song Chart
  • This track finds Ne-Yo crooning about the predatory nature of the opposite sex. "It's a song that's kinda talking about that chick who takes pride in breaking up relationships," Ne-Yo explained to The Boombox . "She's walking, talking, living, breathing temptation."
  • Frequent Kendrick Lamar collaborator Schoolboy Q spits some rhymes. "The reason that Schoolboy Q is on ['Run'] is 'cause I'm a huge fan of Schoolboy Q and I knew that I wanted to do something with him," Ne-Yo explained. "I just had to figure out what song was gonna make the most sense. The song is kinda dark and he has that kinda thing to his voice."
  • Several of the tracks on Non Fiction, including this one, were inspired by true tales told to Ne-Yo by fans. He told Digital Spy the story behind this song:

"This guy wrote in via Twitter telling me about a very predatorial type of woman. He wrote and I quote: 'She just took absolute joy in destroying my relationship'. Basically talking about this woman that he met who seduced him into doing what it is that she wanted and using the fact that he did what she wanted to destroy his current relationship."

"It's a tragic story but I just thought that that would make for a really cool song. So I wrote a song that basically turned into a public service announcement for the fellas out there, like: 'Should you run into this type of woman, run for your life!'"
