Ag Pleez Deddy Song Chart
  • As might be suspected from its title, "Ag Pleez Deddy" is a vernacular song - written partly in Afrikaans. Oxford graduate Jeremy Taylor went to South Africa as a teacher, but this ditty - which he wrote in 1961 - is said to have outsold Elvis Presley. Subtitled "Ballad Of The Southern Suburbs" (in brackets), it was released on the Gallotone label backed by Jo'Burg Talking Blues."
  • It was also used in the revue Wait A Minim!, and appears on the original soundtrack, wherein it runs to 3 minutes 54 seconds.
  • Jeremy Taylor said of this song: "I was teaching at a school in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg, and I was enchanted by the way they spoke English. So I wrote them a song. It had some strange effects, because a lot of people were offended, especially the parents. The government didn't like it either because it was mixing the languages; they didn't want black and white to mix, and they didn't want English and Afrikaans to mix either. But the kids loved it, and so did South Africa in the end."
  • An alternative recording on the Gallotone label is credited to Bali-Taylor, and the song is called simply "Ballad Of The Northern Suburbs." The recording is credited to Valerie Miller and Taylor. A third (and live) recording, by Taylor alone on the Decca label, contains "the missing last verse." Herein, the title is given (verbatim) as:

    "Ag, Pleez Daddy
    Ballad of the Southern Suburbs"

    Back To Zero Lyrics

    Back To Zero
So you want to blow us all to pieces
Go meet your maker, head hung down
And give him all your explanations
    Go ahead, throw down
Back to zero, back to nothing
Straight to meltdown, back to zero
    That's where we're heading

It's a monkey living on my back
I can feel my spine begin to crack
    I'm looking to the future
    I keep on glancing back
    I prefer to rot
    I don't want to pop

I think I'll head back to the jungle, alright
Don't want to see no big bad rumble, too fright
Back to zero, that's where we're going
Back to nothing, right now, right now
    No heroes? No more heroes
    Back to meltdown
That's where I'm going, back to zero

My whole life is hanging on a thread
I'm the fly inside the spider's web
    I'm looking to the future
    I keep on glancing back
    I prefer to rot
    I don't want to pop

I worry about my great grandchildren
Living ten miles beneath the ground
I worry about their whole existence
The whole damn thing's in doubt
Back to zero, that's where we're going
Back to nothing, that's where we're heading
Straight to meltdown, that's where we're going
Back to zero, right now, right now

    We're going nowhere
    Right now, right now
Back to zero, that's where we're heading

  • This uptempo track by the Slovenian rock band Strelnikoff is recorded in English (and Anglo-Saxon). In spite of its lyrics, it is not an anti-abortion song, indeed it is precisely the opposite. If the content of the song caused controversy, the CD cover didn't go down too well either: a picture of the Virgin Mary embracing a giant rat.

The Slovenian church and many individual Catholics demanded not only that the single be banned but that the group be thrown into gaol; the State Attorney received literally thousands of letters to this effect. On March 7, 1998, Archbishop Franc Rode organized a special mass to forgive the blasphemers, though it was not until 2003 that the furor ended when finally a court rejected the indictment. • The song was originally recorded by Jamaican reggae star Half Pint with the title of "Winsome." It was a big hit and his first #1 in his home country. Half Pint heard about the Stones covering his song from percussionist Sydney Wolfe who was at a studio in Holland when Keith Richards chose it. Wolfe relayed the news to Half Pint about the re-titled rock version. The Jamaican reggae star surmised in The Sunday Gleaner: "He (Richards) used to spend a lot of time in Jamaica. He probably was around when it was popular on the charts." Half Pint added that he finds it, "interesting still. They did it in a slow tempo way. That tempo was more like a ballad tempo, but you can hear the rock attitude. They had rock with a pop feel". He concluded that the song's reggae origins were not forgotten and the Stones also "did it in a way that you can realise it was a reggae song. It was not far from reggae, but you could hear the difference."
  • Keith Richards sang on this with Reggae star Jimmy Cliff. Cliff had a hit years later with "I Can See Clearly Now."
  • "Too Rude" was considered for the album title.

We Three Kings of Orient Are
    Bearing gifts, we traverse far
    Field and fountain
    Moor and mountain
    Following yonder star

Oh, star of wonder, star of might
    Star with royal beauty bright
    Westward leading
    Still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

Born a babe on Bethlehem's plain
Gold we bring to crown him again
    King forever, ceasing never
    Over us all to reign

Oh, star of wonder, star of might
    Star with royal beauty bright
    Westward leading
    Still proceeding
Guide us to the perfect light

    Frankincense to offer have I
    Incense owns a deity nigh
Prayer and praising, all men raising
    Worship God on high

Oh, star of wonder, star of might
    Star with royal beauty bright
    Westward leading
    Still proceeding
Guide us to the perfect light

  • This carol was written in 1857 by the Reverend John Henry Hopkins. He wrote both words and music as part of a Christmas pageant for the General Theological Seminary in New York City. As it proved popular within his circle of family and friends, Hopkins decided to publish the carol in 1862.
  • The Beach Boys recorded this carol for their 1964 The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. At 4:04, it was the longest song the Beach Boys recorded in the entire 1960s.
  • Fun fact: The Bible does not say there were only three wise men. We assume that they were a trio because of the three gifts that were given: gold, incense, and myrrh.

    You go for yourself
You move it to the right
Yeah if it takes all night

    Now take it kinda slow
With a whole lot of soul
    Don't move it too fast

You scratch just like a monkey
    Yeah you do real cool
You slide it to the limbo
Yeah how low can you go?

    Now come on baby
Don't fall down on me now
    Just move it right here
    To the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah yeah yeah to the Harlem shuffle

    Hitch hitch hike baby
    Across the floor

I can't stand it no more

    Now get into your slide
    Just ride ride ride
    Little pony, ride!

  • The Harlem Shuffle is a dance that was popular in the '50s and '60s originating in Harlem ballrooms. Harlem is a section of New York City with a large black population. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This was originally recorded by the R&B duo Bob and Earl in 1969. Their version, which was produced by Barry White, hit #7 in the UK. Keith Richards wanted to record this for quite a while. He would put the original version on demo tapes for Mick Jagger. The Bob and Earl version was sampled on the House Of Pain hit "Jump Around."
  • With the exception of the live cut "Going To A Go-Go," this was the first cover song The Stones released as a single since The Valentinos' "It's All Over Now" in 1964. Bobby Womack, the author and lead singer, sang backup on this and other songs on Dirty Work.
  • Backup singers included Womack, Tom Waits, Don Covay, and Patti Scialfa, who would later marry Bruce Springsteen.
  • Keith Richards said of this song in 1986: "I've been trying to get Harlem Shuffle on an album, without actually telling Mick, for 5 or 6 years. I thought that was a natural number for him to sing - it was made for him. I've been giving him cassettes with Harlem Shuffle stuffed in the middle somewhere for a long time, but I never got any real response. One night we were in the studio and Woody and I started plunking away at it. We were amazed at how simple the song was - about 2 chords. The band was just warming up on it, jamming, when Mick walked in and started singing. We realized, YEAH. And we did it in 2 takes. So it paid off eventually, though it cost me a fortune in cassettes."
  • Two extended versions were released as 12-inch singles, the "London Mix" and "NY Mix."
  • The video was one of the first to combine live action with animation. It opens with a cartoon featuring some cats going to a club, where the Rolling Stones are playing. The cartoon cats show up throughout the video. Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi did the animation. Both artists pioneered adult animation and specialized in cats: Bakshi worked on Fritz the Cat, which was the first cartoon movie to get an X rating, and Kricfalusi drew for the raunchy cartoon Ren and Stimpy.

    I had a thought, dear
    However scary
    About that night
    The bugs and the dirt
    Why were you digging?
    What did you bury
    Before those hands pulled me
    From the earth?

I will not ask you where you came from
I will not ask you, neither should you

Honey just put your sweet lips on my lips
We should just kiss Like Real People Do

    I knew that look dear
    Eyes always seeking
    Was there in someone
    That dug long ago
So I will not ask you
    Why you were creeping
In some sad way I already know

I will not ask you where you came from
I will not ask you and neither would you

Honey just put your sweet lips on my lips
We should just kiss like real people do

One Hit (To The Body) Lyrics

You fell out of the clear blue sky
    To the darkness below
The smell of your flesh excites me
    My blood starts to flow
    So help me God

You burst in in a blaze of light
    You unzippered the dark
One kiss took my breath away
One look lights up the stars

And it's it's one hit to the body
It comes straight from the heart
    One hit to the body
Sure went straight to the mark
    So help me God

It's one shot when you love me
One shot when you leave me
    I don't need no security
    I just need some peace

And it's one hit to the body
It comes straight from the heart
One voice calls out my name
It sure went straight to the mark

One punch and you knocked me down
    Tore my defenses apart
One round took me out of the game
You did me some permanent harm

    It took just one hit
    It took just one hit
    It ain't enough for me
    It ain't enough for me
    It ain't enough for me
    It's hurting me baby

Oh your love is a sweet addiction
I can't clean you out of my veins
    It's a life long addiction
    That has damaged my brain

It took just one hit to the body
    To tear my defenses apart
    One hit to the body
Sure went straight to the mark

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart
    One hit to the body
To the body, to the body
    Come straight from the heart

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart
That's all it took, that's all it took
So help me so help me so help me God
So help me so help me so help me God

  • Jimmy Page played lead guitar. He was in the area because of Live-Aid, a huge benefit concert that reunited Led Zeppelin members Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. On this, Jimmy took the role of session guitarist, which he used to be. Jimmy Cliff, Patty Scialfa and Tom Waits also contributed to the album. (thanks, Joel - Chicago, IL)
  • Producer Steve Lillywhite's wife, Kirsty MacColl, sang backup. She also performed on "Harlem Shuffle."
  • The lyrics are not literal. The song is about a figurative punch from an emotionally charged love affair.
  • This opens with a clash of acoustic and electric guitars. The acoustic was Ron Wood's idea - he got a writing credit for it.
  • The video showed Mick Jagger and Keith Richards jabbing at each other. They were feuding at the time over Mick's solo career, so it wasn't much of a stretch.
  • When this album came out, a group called the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was trying to get any music they considered offensive banned from the airwaves. They came up with a list of 15 artists they really didn't like and called them the "Filthy 15." The Stones were a famous band with some raunchy songs, but the PMRC left them off this list, but did manage to include Sheena Easton and Cyndi Lauper. In order to stay out of the controversy, The Stones record label released this album in a wrapper that hid any offensive words.

    How Do You Know? Lyrics

    I'd rather be cold
    Than wrapped up in love
Can't seem to get it right
Can't seem to get it right
    Fill me up
And still leave me a little dry
Love comes and cleans you out
    Love's got an enemy now

How can I forget about the past?
    So easily and start again

    How Do You Know?
    How do you know?
    When you've given him everything
And he still made a mess of things
How do you know, know know know?

Oh, it feels so good in the moment
But it's just the moment, that'll soon be over
    Once my thoughts are sober
And I'll trade it all love just to believe again
Looking for reasons why its never the right time

How do I forget about the past?
    So easily and start again

    How do you know?
    How do you know?
    When you've given him everything
And he still made a mess of things
    How do you know?

We don't understand it's worth until it hurts
    Sometimes we're so blinded
    And always reminded
What's all the fear made me mess it up again
Maybe it was me, maybe it was him
    But I just don't know
Don't know which way to go

    How do you know?
    How do you know?

  • The third single off the Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart? album is a touching ballad, which finds a vulnerable Michelle singing about a relationship going awry. The whole LP was inspired by a lover who left the songstress because he was having a baby with another woman. Her heart was broken hence the album title. "You can have your heart broken so many times," she told The Boombox , "you want God to buy your heart."
  • Lyrically, Michelle seems similarities between her self and Taylor Swift, who is famous for writing songs about the men in her life. "I'm the black Taylor Swift," she declared to The Boombox. "If I can't write a song about you, I'm not going to date you. I always write about who I am dating."

    Sweet Child O' Mine Lyrics

She's got a smile it seems to me
    Reminds me of childhood memories
    Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I'd stare too long
I'd probably break down and cry

    Oh, oh, oh
    Sweet Child O' Mine
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet love of mine

She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
    And pray for the thunder
    And the rain
    To quietly pass me by

    Oh, oh, oh
    Sweet child o' mine
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Sweet love of mine

    Oh, oh, oh, oh

    Oh, oh, oh, oh

    Where do we go?

  • The lyrics came from a poem Axl Rose was working on. He wrote the song about his girlfriend, Erin Everly, who is the daughter of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers. They married in 1990 but divorced a month later.
  • Appetite For Destruction was Guns N' Roses first album, and it took a while for the band to catch on. This didn't hit US #1 until a year after the album was released. It was the third single, following "It's So Easy" and "Welcome To The Jungle," which both flopped, although "Welcome To The Jungle" became a hit when it was re-released in the wake of "Sweet Child"'s success.
  • Slash came up with the riff when he was playing around on his guitar. He thought it was silly and wanted nothing to do with it, but Axl loved it and had him keep playing it. Izzy Stradlin added some chords, and the song came together. According to Duff McKagan's 2012 autobiography, Slash always considered it the worst Guns N' Roses song.
  • Slash told Rolling Stone magazine: "It's a combination of influences. From Jeff Beck, Cream and Zeppelin to stuff you'd be surprised at: the solos in Manfred Mann's version of 'Blinded By The Light' and Gerry Rafferty's 'Baker Street.'" (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Axl listened to a bunch of Lynyrd Skynyrd songs before recording his vocal. He liked their down-home, genuine sound and wanted to duplicate it on this track.
  • This won Best Single, Heavy Metal/Hard Rock at the 1989 American Music Awards. The group performed "Patience" at the show with Don Henley sitting in on drums for an ailing Steven Alder.
  • In 1989, this won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Heavy Metal Video.
  • A third verse Axl wrote was edited out because the record company thought it made the song too long.
  • The song hit #1 in America on September 10, 1988, and stayed there for two weeks. While it was climbing to the top spot, Guns N' Roses was touring as the opening act for Aerosmith. By the end of the tour on September 15, G N' R had eclipsed their headliners in popularity and were chosen for the cover of Rolling Stone for their November 17 issue.

The tour went very well thanks to a ground rule Aerosmith set up: no drugs in their presence. The now-rehabbed Aerosmith could see Guns N' Roses heading down the same path of addiction, but made no effort to preach to them about the dangers, as they knew the Gunners would have to make their own mistakes. Aerosmith did, however, give T-shirts to the band listing the rehab centers they had been through instead of tour dates, which they felt was their statement.
  • In the video, a few moments before Slash's solo takes off, Axl can be seen taking off his jacket. Axl had so many bracelets on his arms, he had trouble getting his jacket off, which made them do a number of retakes. Axl stated in a 2006 radio interview with Eddie Trunk that, "the video they wanted to do for the song was supposed to be of an Asian woman carrying a baby into the United States. At the end of the video, the baby is cut open and there is heroin inside because that's what the song is about." (thanks, Jacob - Stockholm, Sweden)
  • This was remixed and re-released in England in May 1989, where it went to #6. When first released in August 1988, it made UK #24.
  • Sheryl Crow covered this in 1999 for the movie Big Daddy, scoring a #30 hit in England. Her version appears near the middle of the movie right after they take the kid away; the Guns N' Roses original is played at the end with the credits. (thanks, shelby - Westfield, IN)
  • The guitar solo is ranked #37 in Guitar World magazine reader's poll for the top 100 greatest guitar solos of all time (Slash's "November Rain" solo ranks #6). (thanks, Elliot - Toronto, Canada)
  • In an interview with Uncut magazine February 2008 Slash was asked where the weirdest place that he'd heard one of his songs was. He replied: "I've heard 'Paradise City' and 'Patience' in some odd places, but the weirdest thing is hearing Muzak versions of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' in elevators and shopping malls. I've even heard an arrangement of it for harp. Recently I was in a hotel and the lounge pianist was playing it. I get a mixture of emotions when that happens. Part of it is 'hey wow, that's our tune!,' part of it's embarrassment at even noticing it, part of it's bewilderment of somebody else playing your music, someone who knows nothing about you, who has never met you, who is just playing your music as part of a thousand pieces of material that they have to play. Imagine how, say, Paul McCartney must feel, hearing his music absolutely everywhere."
  • In 2008, the Recording Industry Association of America declared Appetite for Destruction the best selling debut album in the US with 18 million copies sold. The previous record holder was Boston.
  • This song featured near the end of the 2008 movie The Wrestler, when Mickey Rourke's character makes his entrance into the ring. Axl Rose, who is friends with Rourke, allowed the low-budget film to use the song for almost nothing, something Rourke thanked Axl for at the Golden Globe awards when he won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.
  • In 2009 a mellow jazz version by Taken By Trees, aka the Swedish singer Victoria Bergsman, reached the UK Top 40 thanks to its use in TV commercials for department store John Lewis.
  • The single version is about a minute shorter. The intro is cut down and the second solo, after the second verse, is removed. (thanks, Tom - Trowbridge, England)
  • The song revealed a sensitive side that Rose hadn't shown before and has done so sporadically since: "A lot of rock bands are too wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion in any of their stuff unless they are in pain," said Rose at the time. "Sweet Child O' Mine is the first positive love song I've ever written, but I never had anyone to write anything about before."
  • This is the most covered song that Slash has ever written. He told UK's Metro newspaper: "There are some really good instrumental versions for the piano or violin, but I've been horrified by some muzak versions. I've been sitting in a doctor's office thinking, 'That sounds familiar,' and then realizing it's someone's interpretation of what I've written. That can be a creepy feeling."
  • Speaking with the radio station WEBN in Cincinnati, Ohio, Slash admitted that he isn't fond of this song apart from its riff. He explained: "You know, Guns N' Roses was always a real hardcore, sort of, AC/DC kind of hard rock band with a lot of attitude. If we did any kind of ballads, it was bluesy. This was an uptempo ballad. That's one of the gayest things you can write. But at the same time, it's a great song - I'm not knocking it - but at the time, it just did not fit in with the rest of our, sot of, schtick. And, of course, it would be the biggest hit we ever had."
  • Slash broke out the wah-wah pedal for his guitar solo, which landed at #3 on Guitar World's 2015 list of greatest wah solos of all time.

    Don't Shoot Me Santa Lyrics

    Oh, Santa
    I've been waiting on you
    That's funny kid
Because I've been coming for you

    Oh, Santa
I've been killing just for fun
Well, the party is over kid
Because I, because I got a bullet in my gun
    A bullet in your what

(Santa's got a bullet in his gun, you know it)
(Santa's got a bullet in his gun)

    Don't Shoot Me Santa Clause
I've been a clean living boy
I promise you, did every little thing you ask me to
I can't believe the things I'm going through

    Don't shoot me Santa Clause
No one else around believes me
But the children on the block they tease me
I couldn't let them off that easy

    Oh, Santa
It's been a real hard year
There just ain't no getting around this
Life is hard but look at me I turned out alright

    Hey, Santa
Why don't we talk about it, work it out
Believe me, this ain't what I wanted
I love all you kids, you know that, hell

I remember when you were just 10 years old
    Playing out in the desert
Just waiting for a sip of that
    Sweet Mojave rain

    In the sweet Mojave rain
The boy was on his own

    Don't shoot me Santa Clause
I've been a clean living boy
I promise you, did every little thing you ask me to
I can't believe the things I'm going through

    Hey, Santa Clause
No one else around believes me
But the children on the block they tease me
I couldn't let them off that easy

They had it coming, so, why can't you see
I couldn't turn my check no longer
The sun is going down and Christmas is near
Just look the other way and I'll disappear forever

    Don't shoot me Santa Clause
No one else around believes me
But the children on the street they tease me
I couldn't let them off that easy

    Believe me Santa, Santa

  • With the exception of the Savior of the World himself, that white-bearded guy who bring gifts to the homes of the well-behaved children on 24th December seems to crop up in more Christmas songs than any other seasonal character. The Killers added to the Kris Kringle oeuvre with this ditty about being a good boy for Santa. Released on November 27, 2007 as a digital download, proceeds from this tune went to AIDS charities as part of the Bono-headed Red campaign.
  • The video was directed, edited, and co-produced by Las Vegas native Matthew Gray Gubler, who is best known for playing Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds. The role of Santa was performed Ryan Pardey. The Halloween Town frontman has been a road fixture with The Killers since 2004 and is known to die-hard fans of the band as The Captain. The Sawdust hidden track "Questions With the Captain" was written by the band about Purdey. In 2012, Pardey appeared as Santa again for The Killers on their Christmas single "I Feel It in My Bones."

Killers frontman Brandon Flowers recalled to NME: "Our buddy who's an actor on a show called Criminal Minds, which is pretty successful, he went to school with our buddy who played Santa. His parents own a strange-desert ranch and so we were able to shoot it out there."
  • Fun Fact: To visit every child in the world on Christmas Eve, Santa has to travel at 3,000 times the speed of sound.

  • This used a Funk/Disco beat that was popular at the time. David Sanborn played the sax.
  • Ron Wood got a rare writing credit on this song. It's one of the few Stones originals not credited only to Jagger/Richards.
