Yellow Song Chart

Lead singer Chris Martin has said that the lyrics are about being devoted to someone, wanting to do anything for them: writing a song for them, swimming across the sea for them and so on. He said that it's not necessarily a romantic devotion, but could be about someone that you look up to and would do anything for, a brotherly love. He claims to have had no specific person in mind when he wrote it. (thanks, Adam - Sussex, England)

The band came up with the line "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you" after looking up at the night sky. They were recording in Wales, which had a nice, clear sky.

The color yellow can have many negative implications ("Yellow Journalism," "Yellow Fever," a "Yellow Card" for a foul in soccer), but for Coldplay, it is a beautiful color. According to lead singer Chris Martin, "It was simply because that word sounded nice, it just seemed to fit, no other reason. None of the other colors would have sounded right really!" The Beatles were kind to the color when they used it in their song "Yellow Submarine."

Martin initially wrote the words and melody, then the rest of the band wrote the other bits and pieces (the hook, the riff, fills, etc.).

"Yellow" is a term that can mean cowardly or afraid. From this standpoint, the singer could be afraid and nervous to show his love, until he "ran across" and "jumped across" for her. He finally got the nerve to express his love. (thanks, Stefan - Winona, MN)

This was a hit in their native England, but it didn't do nearly as well in the US, where it took Coldplay longer to catch on. The song did have tremendous crossover appeal, however, and got lots of airplay on modern rock, adult contemporary and pop radio stations.

The video is one continuous shot of Chris Martin walking on a beach in England. The plan was to shoot the band walking along a sunny beach with lots of people lying around, but Coldplay drummer Will Champion's mother died shortly before the shoot. The film crew and extras were already hired, so with the band's blessing, Martin went by himself while the other members attended the funeral. It was raining that day, so instead of using the extras, they had Martin alone on the beach. Parachutes is dedicated to Champion's mother. (thanks, Rich - Llanelli, Wales)

The video was shot at a fast shutter speed to achieve the slow-motion. In order for Martin to sing along, he had to lip-sync to the song played at double speed.

Coldplay was in England recording other tracks for the album while this was being mixed in New York. They hated the results of the mix and flew to New York to make sure they got the sound they were looking for.

ABC Television used this song to promote their shows. The campaign featured bright yellow backgrounds.

This won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. This was nominated for Best Rock Song, but lost to "Drops Of Jupiter" by Train.

When performing this song, Chris Martin used to change the song's melody. However, R.E.M's Michael Stipe advised against it: "Stop doing that. People want to hear the songs the way they know them." The Coldplay vocalist began singing all their songs in a straightforward way.

During the Coldplay episode of VH1's Storytellers series, Chris Martin recalled that the song was named after the book that happened to be nearest to him when we he was finishing writing it: The UK telephone directory, which is named Yellow Pages.

Martin says that his favorite color is blue, not yellow.

This tune was recorded for the soundtrack of the online first-person shooter, Destiny. Paul McCartney's first song to be specifically written for a video game, it was released with a variety of different mixes on December 8, 2014, including a "thrash" mix.

McCartney explained why he released his video game song as a single. "When you're writing something like 'Hope for the Future', which is custom made, it is like doing a portrait for someone," he said. "You have to use your imagination and work out what they need, what they're going to want and then what you want to give them."

"Then you've got to combine those three things into something that you still think maintains integrity," McCartney continued. "So in the game you're a Guardian of the last city on Earth so that suggested to me the 'hope for the future' idea and I went from there."

"Then I thought it is not just a game song," he added, "this will get played outside the game so it has got to be standalone too, you can't have references to aliens or people will think, 'What's he talking about?' So it had to have its own standalone meaning and integrity."

McCartney told NME what drew him to the project. "I was intrigued by the intricacy of the music because in a game if you go one route a certain piece of the music plays," he said. "I know from my kids and my grandkids, they just bury themselves in a game and I don't think they've got time to listen to my music. Their agenda is pretty full with all the other stuff, you know, so I like the idea of infiltrating into their agenda."

The music video sees Paul McCartney morph into a hologram within the game. The clip was directed by Daniel Askill, whose resume also includes the visuals for Sia's songs "Breathe Me" and "Chandelier."

Rhythm Of The Heat Song Chart

Gabriel wrote this song about psychologist Carl Jung's visit to Africa. He joined a group of drummers and dancers and became overwhelmed with fear. Gabriel learned about it from Jung's book Symbols And The Interpretation Of Dreams.

Jung was studying the Collective Unconscious, and was afraid he would go mad as the drummers and dancers let the music control them. Gabriel tries to capture this feeling with the tribal drumbeats.

Gabriel incorporated a lot of World Music into his solo work, and this song is a great example. He explained to the NME in 1982: "The end of 'Rhythm Of The Heat' uses the Ghanaian war dance as an echo – because a big bass thud underneath it puts it in a different dimension. An area that I can identify with more strongly than something that sounds purely 'African'."

10538 Overture Song Chart

This was the first song ELO recorded and released. When Jeff Lynne wrote it, he was in a band called The Move. This prompted some members of The Move to go ahead with plans to create a new band with string instruments called The Electric Light Orchestra.

Lynne wanted the lyrics to be about a man who had a number rather than a name.

1053 was the serial number of the desk Lynne used to write this. They added the 8 and included the word "Overture" to make it clear they were an orchestra.

The album was first released in the UK as Electric Light Orchestra. When it was released in the US a few months later, someone from their American Record company called to find out the name of the album, but didn't get through. That person wrote down "No Answer" on the paperwork, and that was accidentally used as the name of the US release.

No Self Control Song Chart

This was inspired by Steve Reich's album Music For 18 Musicians. A composer who studied at Juilliard, Reich experimented with electronic textures that Gabriel wanted to try in a rock format.

In an attempt to create different sounds, Gabriel did not allow cymbals on all of this album. The fast rhythm is generated by marimbas, a wooden African instrument which Gabriel used a lot in the future. Gabriel also used a programmable rhythm machine called a Paia to help create the beats. Gabriel later said that musically, this was one of his breakthrough tracks.

Phil Collins, who was taking a break from Genesis while his first marriage fell apart, played drums on this.

This was released as a single to coincide with Gabriel's third album, but it didn't chart.

The first Jamey Johnson original recording since 2010, the singer included the cut on his 2014 The Christmas Song EP. Johnson penned the tune with veteran Nashville songsmiths Bill Anderson and Buddy Cannon. The same trio wrote George Strait's 2006 hit single "Give It Away," which won the Country Music Association's Song of the Year award.

Johnson told Billboard magazine that has nothing but the utmost respect for both Anderson and Cannon, saying, "I think Bill Anderson is a traditionalist from way back. When he came back to town, he was every bit the traditionalist and troubadour that he is today. He, Willie and Merle are my leading mentors - going back as far as I can go. They saw country music for what it was then, and me being a traditionalist, I take my lessons from them seriously, and I try to learn them to the best of my ability so I can pass them down to the people who come after me. Bill and Buddy both do that for me. Buddy literally walked me through my first session. Most of the stuff I learned in the studio, I learned from Buddy Cannon."
