I Don't Remember Lyrics

I got no means to show identification
I got no papers show you what I am
You'll have to take me just the way that you find me
What's gone is gone and I do not give a damn

Empty stomach, empty head
I got empty heart and empty bed
I Don't Remember
I don't remember

I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all

Strange is your language and I have no decoder
Why don't you make your intentions clear
With eyes to the sun and your mouth to the soda
Saying, "Tell me the truth, you got nothing to fear

Stop staring at me like a bird of prey
I'm all mixed up, I got nothing to say
I don't remember
I don't remember

I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything
Anything at all

I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything at all
I don't remember, I don't recall
I got no memory of anything
Absolutely anything at all
I don't remember

  • This song is about a man with amnesia being asked a bunch of questions. Gabriel had an interest in psychiatry and explored the topic on this album. In a 1980 interview with Sounds, he called himself "a purveyor of amateur psychiatric cliches," adding, "The only way I can make it work is compare my own experience with the theories."
  • Robert Fripp, Dave Gregory, and David Rhodes all played guitar on this. Fripp was a member of King Crimson.
  • This song was heavily processed, especially at the end where the music is slowed down and distorted further over some barely-audible whispering by Gabriel. The bass and midrange were equalized out of Gabriel's vocals, giving him a tinny sound similar to a phone line.
  • Gabriel wrote this using a new approach. The rhythm was put in a programmable drum machine and the chords and melody built around it. Drum machines were new at the time.

I hear you coming from a mile away
And you don't have enough to offer
Don't waste your time, playing with my mind

I write the rules, for shame on you
    You won't forget it

    You just Follow, follow, follow
    But tomorrow, morrow, morrow
    When you're hollow, hollow, hollow
You'll be sad and all alone
    Sad and all alone

  • This club-ready track finds Blige warning a love interest, "Don't waste your time, play with my mind or you'll regret it," lest they end up "sad and all alone." The song is one of two collaborations on The London Sessions between Mary J. Blige and the English electronic duo Disclosure. (They also worked together on the lead single "Right Now.") Disclosure first collaborated with Blige earlier in 2014 on a remix of their "F For You."
  • Blige had a lot in common musically with the Disclosure duo. "My whole reason for gravitating towards them was the fact that they had so much knowledge of the music that my generation grew up on," she told Radio.com . "The deep house - I was too young to go clubbing, but I used to hear it on the radio, and they captured it 100%."

"Their hip-hop history and their musical history is just like [shakes her head], 'You guys are too young. What are you, like aliens or something?,'" Blige added laughing. "It's just amazing."

    Intruder Lyrics

I know something about opening windows and doors
I know how to move quietly to creep across creaky wooden floors
I know where to find precious things in all your cupboards and drawers

    Slipping the clippers
Slipping the clippers through the telephone wires
The sense of isolation, the sense of isoloation
    Inspires me

I like to feel the suspense when I'm certain you know I am there
I like you lying awake, your baited breath charging the air
I like the touch and the smell of all the pretty dresses you wear

    Intruders happy in the dark
    Intruder come
Intruder come and he leave his mark, leave his mark

  • This song is about a burglar who breaks into a woman's house and is never caught. Gabriel wanted the listener to feel a "sense of urgency," so he made the song intentionally creepy. He says it was one he always enjoyed performing live.
  • The repeating drum pattern on this song gave it a very distinctive sound and a sinister feel. The drums were played by Phil Collins, who would later use variations of this sound on the equally eerie songs "Mama" and "In The Air Tonight."

Putting the drums through a gate compression unit and adding reverb created this effect. Gabriel and Collins give different accounts as to where the idea came from. Collins has said that he built the drum track for a song he was working on called "Marguerita," which was never released. Gabriel credits the album's engineer Hugh Padgham and producer Steve Lillywhite for coming up with the processing to create the unusual sound.

At the time, Collins was taking a break from Genesis after having problems with his first marriage. Gabriel, who played with Collins in Genesis, got him to help out with drums on his third album.
  • Gabriel has cited the work of the filmmakers Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Hitchcock as influences on this song.
  • Before Phil Collins played the drums on this track, Gabriel had the cymbals and hi-hats removed from the kit. This accomplished the goal of getting Collins to come up with an unusual arrangement, but it got him a little too far out of his comfort zone, as he kept trying to hit cymbals and hi-hats that weren't there. They had to put tom-tom drums where these were so he could keep a rhythm.

  • This was heavily influenced by Robert Fripp, who got a composer credit. Fripp, formerly guitarist for King Crimson, produced Gabriel's second album over the objections of Atlantic Records, which thought his techniques would not be commercially successful. The album had poor sales.
  • Fripp named his 1979 solo album Exposure after this.
  • There arn't many lyrics, but they refer to the media invading Gabriel's privacy.
  • The drums were double-tracked and range across the stereo spectrum.
  • This is part of Gabriel's story of Mozo, a mercurial stranger who would come and go, changing people's lives. Mozo would appear in "On The Air," "Down The Dolce Vita," "Here Comes The Flood", "Red Rain," and "That Voice Again," but the Mozo story as a stage production or movie as Gabriel intended never developed.

  • Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes is an album featuring a collective of musicians recording under the moniker The New Basement Tapes. The record consists of a series of tracks based on lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1966-67 with each artist taking the lead on adding the music and vocals for several songs each. T Bone Burnett oversaw the production.
  • This song features the voice of Marcus Mumford, who also supplied the tune for Dylan's lyrics. Mojo magazine asked Mumford what drew him to the words of Stranger? He replied: "I liked that it was a bit dirty, I liked that it was a bit gritty."

"There's a conversation within the song, so I enjoyed singing as the object and the subject," Mumford added. "That's a style you find through reading people like T.S. Eliot who jump around in conversations all the time, and Dylan does that all the time in songs. It also has a kind of outlaw feel to it, and that was fun to play with."

    On The Air Lyrics

Built in the belly of junk by the river my cabin stands
Made from the trash I dug out 'the heap, with my own fair hands
Every night, I'm back at the shack and I'm sure no one is there
I'm putting the aerial up, so I can go out On The Air

    On the air
    On the air
    On the air

Every morning I'm out at dawn with the dwarfs and the tramp
For a silent communion lit from above by the sodium lamps
Everyone I meet on the street acts as if I wasn't there
But they're all going to know who I am 'cause I can go out on the air

    On the air
    On the air
    On the air

Leaving the car down leafy lane
Turning out Tarzan for my Jungle Jane
    anyone at all
From Captain Zero and his brand of superhero
    standing by a call
    Oh it's not easy
    No it's not easy
    Making real friends

Don't give me your steak-reared milk boys, milk boys
Half alive on empty white noise, white noise
I got power, I'm proud to be loud; my signal goes out clear
I want everybody to know that Mozo is here

  • Long Beach rapper Odis Flores is a rapper who records under the name of O.T. Genasis. He was signed by G-Unit Records in July 2011, after his track, "Jackie Chan," came to the attention of 50 Cent, released his debut mixtape, Black Belt the following year. Things didn't work out and the rapper was released from his contract with the label. O.T. didn't remain unsigned for long, signing with Busta Rhymes' Conglomerate Records after the Brooklyn MC was drawn in to the energy the Long Beach native brought to his performance at the Playhouse Night Club. "I was so turned up by what he displayed, not just as an MC but as a showman," Busta recalled to Rolling Stone. "He was jumping on the speakers. He damn near was swinging from the chandeliers in the bitch."
  • Despite being from the West Coast, O.T. takes pride on not having a region-based sound. "I'm from the West Coast, but you can hear in my songs that they don't really sound like they're from there," he told Noisey . "I like to put myself in the position where I'm like I can give the [listener] everything and make a record that sounds like it could be from anywhere."
  • O.T. released this drug ballad about his love for cocaine as the first single from his debut album. He recorded the track at the Atlantic Records studios in California. "I came up with [the concept] at another studio, one of my boys' studio," he recalled to Rolling Stone. "I just knew I had to do it on another mic and make it sound right. Usually, if I hear songs, I record it on a Voice Memo first. I have to perfect it. I'm a big fan of delivery and I want to make sure you're saying it right. I'm like, 'This has to be perfect when I do this.'"

"I was super amped up," O.T. added. "It was probably 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I had the music all the way up yelling, 'I'm in love with the coco!' I was just being young and hungry. Not just for music but in survival mode. When certain things aren't going right in your lifestyle, like, certain bills are still in effect. I didn't have a big record before this."
  • O.T. did the song for himself rather than other people and denies he's glorifying cocaine dealing. "That's how I felt at the time," he said. "The reaction that I'm getting from it, it just clarifies that there's a lot of s--t going on, whether that's people using it or people selling it. No, I'm not glorifying it. That's not what I'm doing at all. I just want to be a spokesperson for the people."
  • In late 2014, The Golden State Warriors of the NBA started singing this song on the team plane after road victories, with one of their players, Marreese Speights, posting the videos on Instagram. This practice ended abruptly, however, when Speights posted on December 7 that they were no longer allowed to do it, presumably became someone in management realized the song was about cocaine.
  • The song's music video shows O.T. sitting at a table with a pile of cocaine. "A lot of artists talk about this stuff, whether it's about cocaine or weed or meth. But nobody actually makes you [see] that," he explained to Billboard magazine. "If I'm going to talk about it, I might as well show you. It's the life of me chilling in the projects, chopping it up, right there in front of your face. I really don't care to be criticized. I stay in my lane and do me."
  • A second, cleaner video was shot by DRE Films without any cocaine chopping. The new clip features cameos by Busta Rhymes (who co-directed the visual), Timbaland, DJ Khaled, Ice T and his wife, who is conveniently named Coco.

    I swam across
    I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do

  • Lead singer Chris Martin has said that the lyrics are about being devoted to someone, wanting to do anything for them: writing a song for them, swimming across the sea for them and so on. He said that it's not necessarily a romantic devotion, but could be about someone that you look up to and would do anything for, a brotherly love. He claims to have had no specific person in mind when he wrote it. (thanks, Adam - Sussex, England)
  • The band came up with the line "Look at the stars, look how they shine for you" after looking up at the night sky. They were recording in Wales, which had a nice, clear sky.
  • The color yellow can have many negative implications ("Yellow Journalism," "Yellow Fever," a "Yellow Card" for a foul in soccer), but for Coldplay, it is a beautiful color. According to lead singer Chris Martin, "It was simply because that word sounded nice, it just seemed to fit, no other reason. None of the other colors would have sounded right really!" The Beatles were kind to the color when they used it in their song "Yellow Submarine."
  • Martin initially wrote the words and melody, then the rest of the band wrote the other bits and pieces (the hook, the riff, fills, etc.).
  • "Yellow" is a term that can mean cowardly or afraid. From this standpoint, the singer could be afraid and nervous to show his love, until he "ran across" and "jumped across" for her. He finally got the nerve to express his love. (thanks, Stefan - Winona, MN)
  • This was a hit in their native England, but it didn't do nearly as well in the US, where it took Coldplay longer to catch on. The song did have tremendous crossover appeal, however, and got lots of airplay on modern rock, adult contemporary and pop radio stations.
  • The video is one continuous shot of Chris Martin walking on a beach in England. The plan was to shoot the band walking along a sunny beach with lots of people lying around, but Coldplay drummer Will Champion's mother died shortly before the shoot. The film crew and extras were already hired, so with the band's blessing, Martin went by himself while the other members attended the funeral. It was raining that day, so instead of using the extras, they had Martin alone on the beach. Parachutes is dedicated to Champion's mother. (thanks, Rich - Llanelli, Wales)
  • The video was shot at a fast shutter speed to achieve the slow-motion. In order for Martin to sing along, he had to lip-sync to the song played at double speed.
  • Coldplay was in England recording other tracks for the album while this was being mixed in New York. They hated the results of the mix and flew to New York to make sure they got the sound they were looking for.
  • ABC Television used this song to promote their shows. The campaign featured bright yellow backgrounds.
  • This won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. This was nominated for Best Rock Song, but lost to "Drops Of Jupiter" by Train.
  • When performing this song, Chris Martin used to change the song's melody. However, R.E.M's Michael Stipe advised against it: "Stop doing that. People want to hear the songs the way they know them." The Coldplay vocalist began singing all their songs in a straightforward way.
  • During the Coldplay episode of VH1's Storytellers series, Chris Martin recalled that the song was named after the book that happened to be nearest to him when we he was finishing writing it: The UK telephone directory, which is named Yellow Pages.
  • Martin says that his favorite color is blue, not yellow.

  • This tune was recorded for the soundtrack of the online first-person shooter, Destiny. Paul McCartney's first song to be specifically written for a video game, it was released with a variety of different mixes on December 8, 2014, including a "thrash" mix.
  • McCartney explained why he released his video game song as a single. "When you're writing something like 'Hope for the Future', which is custom made, it is like doing a portrait for someone," he said. "You have to use your imagination and work out what they need, what they're going to want and then what you want to give them."

"Then you've got to combine those three things into something that you still think maintains integrity," McCartney continued. "So in the game you're a Guardian of the last city on Earth so that suggested to me the 'hope for the future' idea and I went from there."

"Then I thought it is not just a game song," he added, "this will get played outside the game so it has got to be standalone too, you can't have references to aliens or people will think, 'What's he talking about?' So it had to have its own standalone meaning and integrity."
  • McCartney told NME what drew him to the project. "I was intrigued by the intricacy of the music because in a game if you go one route a certain piece of the music plays," he said. "I know from my kids and my grandkids, they just bury themselves in a game and I don't think they've got time to listen to my music. Their agenda is pretty full with all the other stuff, you know, so I like the idea of infiltrating into their agenda."
  • The music video sees Paul McCartney morph into a hologram within the game. The clip was directed by Daniel Askill, whose resume also includes the visuals for Sia's songs "Breathe Me" and "Chandelier."

Empty my mind, I find it hard to cope
Listen to my heart - don't need no stethoscope

Out of woman come the man
Spend the rest of his life gettin' back where he can
As a bow, so a dove
    As below, so above
    From the black hole
    Come the tadpole
    With the dark soul
In coal she burn, she burn

As I drove into the sun
Didn't dare look where I had begun
Lost among echoes of things not there

Frontman Michael Gira witnessed the New York singer-songwriter's industriousness when she visited Dallas in the fall of 2013 to provide guest vocals for the record.
