Major Tom (I'm Coming Home) Lyrics

Major Tom (I'm Coming Home) Song Chart
  • This is a sequel to a song by another artist. It's a follow-up to David Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity," and continues the story of Major Tom, an astronaut who cuts off communication with Earth and floats into space.

Musically, it is nothing like the David Bowie song it is based on, as Schilling used a Techno beat.
  • In this song, having determined that Major Tom is, in fact, sober, Earth decides to bring Tom home. However, just as he is about to turn on the thrusters and jet down to Earth, he cuts off communication with the line "Give my wife my love" and turns off the power to the ship. It is assumed that, sadly, Tom died in the process of re-entry, but in fact he has faked his death so he can return to the depths of space, which he now considers his home. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Bowie released his own sequel to "Space Oddity" in 1980 called "Ashes To Ashes," where Major Tom reestablishes communication with Earth.
  • Schilling is from Germany. This was his only Top 40 Hit in the US; its German-language version was a much bigger hit in Europe.
  • The song got a big lift when MTV put the video in rotation. This was thanks to a woman named Robin Sloane, who was working at Elektra Records as head of video promotion - a job title that existed for that short time when MTV could be pitched videos.
  • During a commercial for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ a cover of this song by the synth rock band Shiny Toy Guns was played. This was a follow-up to an advert featuring a cover by Cat Power of David Bowie's "Space Oddity."
  • In a memorable scene on the US television show Breaking Bad (episode: "Bullet Points"), the character Gale Boetticher (David Costabile) is shown in a video singing karaoke to this song. The entire song was filmed, but only a few seconds were shown on the actual show. In the German language dub, he instead sings along to "Völlig Lösgelost." (thanks, Matt - Warminster, PA)

    Man On The Run Lyrics

    See yourself in this
I know the way you wanted
    It's slow to the beyond

    She gave me nearly everything
Kiss of life and everything in between
    A dynamite and we disappear
    Like smoke on horizon

Thought that I could lean on you
    Forever, forever

    Man On The Run
    You better step aside
    Man on the run
    Running for his life
    Man on the run
    Racing through the balance
    Racing through the balance

    Time waits for no one
    Feel the walls closing in
My mind spins like helicopter blades

I never thought to be here now
The warning signs were so unclear
We could chase our busted dreams

    Man on the run
    You better step aside
    Man on the run
    Running for his life
    Man on the run
    Racing through the balance
    Racing through the balance

    Man on the run
    You better step aside

  • This is the title track of Bush's sixth studio album. The song finds frontman Gavin Rossdale singing of feeling "the walls closing in," as he nears his 49th birthday. "When you first began writing songs, you see the world as infinite, and your time as infinite, because that's the nature of being young," he explained to Rolling Stone. "As you get older, you see it as chapters."

"The title 'Man on the Run' is meant as a universal take on a slice of my life and the people I come across," Rossdale added. "It just seems that the doors are closing and everyone is trying to figure out their way. It's the most universal title I've ever had. I always figure everyone is on the run."

    La Bamba Song Chart
  • "La Bamba" is a traditional Mexican folk song that became a hit for the young rocker Ritchie Valens after he died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959 along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. The song is very popular with Mariachi bands and is often played at weddings. The lyrics are in Spanish: "Para bailar la Bamba se necessita una poca de gracia" means "To dance La Bamba you need to have a little grace."

    A little translation:

The verses start with a man telling his fiancée, "I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain," indicating his big ambitions. In the next verse he sings, "In order to get to heaven you need a big ladder and a little ladder, a little ladder and a big ladder." At this point, he's climbing for the heavens, then comes the refrain where he says, "Up and up and up I'll go." The song if filled with the optimism of youth, and hit the mark with the teenage audience that consumed this early rock.
  • This song was only a modest hit when it was released in November, 1958, but it became far more popular when the Ritchie Valens biopic La Bamba was released in 1987. The movie was a big deal because it was the first major, mainstream Hollywood film with a Hispanic subject. The movie was released in the United States in both Spanish and English versions, and Coca-Cola did a marketing tie-in targeting the Hispanic population in America - a population that would grow considerably in size and influence over the next several years.

The movie was made with the assistance and blessing of the Valens family, and starred Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie. Marshall Crenshaw played Buddy Holly, Brian Setzer played Eddie Cochran, and Taylor Hackford was the director. The music in the film, including the new version of the title track, was performed by Los Lobos. Their version went to #1 in both the UK and US. When we spoke with Louie Perez of Los Lobos , he said that the Valens family asked them to do the film. "For us, it was to bring attention to him and his legacy," he said. "We did it out of really believing in his story."
  • Unlike most songs with titles that are the name of a dance, this one doesn't give any specific instructions on how to do the dance, so alas, there was no "La Bamba" dance craze. In this song, the singer is expressing how he feels about the dance - a generally good one, as assumed because of what he says about it and the beat/rhythm of the song.
  • The title does not have a literal translation. The closest associated word is "Bambolear," which means "To Swing."
  • Thanks to the movie, this became Valens' best known song, but it was far from his biggest hit: that would be "Donna," which made it to #2. "La Bamba" was the B-side of that single, and it began a chart run when "Donna" faded, peaking at #22 a few days after Valens died. It was Valens' producer, Bob Keane, who suggested a new version of "La Bamba" to use as the B-side of "Donna."
  • Valens was born Richard Valenzuela in Pacoima, California to Mexican-Indian parents. He didn't speak fluent Spanish, but could understand his mother and speak a fair Spanglish. He did, however, make a huge impact on the Hispanic audience in the United States, who saw one of their own become the first rock star. Others who followed include Chris Montez, Trini Lopez, and Sam The Sham & The Pharoahs.
  • A young guitarist named Carol Kaye played on this track. She was playing in Jazz clubs in 1957 when she picked up some session work, and she went on to become one of the most prolific studio musicians of the '60s and '70, mostly on bass. Working on "La Bamba" was big moment for her. Said Kaye: "What was nice about working for Ritchie Valens was about that time, I was feeling like I didn't want to do studio work. Because I missed Be-Bop and I knew it was going to be rough to make a living in Jazz. But Ritchie Valens was so nice and so warm, and he made the date so pleasant. I thought if they're all like this, then studio work I can do."
  • When the Los Lobos version of this song hit #1, Taylor Hackford became the first director with consecutive #1 hits from four films: "Up Where We Belong" from An Officer And A Gentleman, "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" from Against All Odds, and both "Separate Lives" and "Say You Say Me" from White Nights.
  • Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody of this song called "Lasagna," which is all about Italian food. (thanks, Steph - SoCal, CA)
  • The Los Lobos remake of this song was the first song with all Spanish lyrics to hit #1 in America. It was a huge break for the band, which was playing weddings in the Los Angeles area just a few years earlier.
  • Ritchie Valens was just 17 when this song was released, and was the same age when he died. He made his first recordings in March 1958, so he was actively recording only for about 10 months. Not much was known about him, and a common misperception was that he was from either Texas or Mexico.

For Buddy Holly, the resurgence came when Don McLean recorded his tribute "American Pie," and for Valens, it was the 1987 movie that brought him to the public's attention. Unlike Holly, whose song "It Doesn't Matter Any More" made #13 when it was released after his death, none of Valens' posthumous releases hit the Top 40. He didn't even have an album out when the plane crashed.

    Run from the sidelines

    Take in a breath
    Fill in your lungs
    Keeping you alive

    No fear
    I'll your eyes
    I'll be a lifeline

    And if I can be
    I'll be your strength
And it won't be long now

    Head up, head up
    Keep holding, holding
    Your head up, head up
    Keep holding, holding

    If you can see
    And you believe
    Why are you so scared

    But if you don't care
    Then why are we here
And what do you have left

    Head up, head up
    Keep holding, holding
    Your head up, head up
    Keep holding, holding

    Don't you take another step
    Away from here
I would go anywhere with you
    What a lie

    I'll break down
    But you will never see
    Tell me, are you happy?
    Are you really happy?

    Stay Under the Tide
    Stay in my eye line
Looking ahead, there is a chance
    Wherever it all ends

    Head up, head up
    And stay strong
Holding your head up, head up
    Keep holding, holding

  • This is one of two songs on The Bones of What You Believe that features Martin Doherty singing lead rather than regular vocalist Lauren Mayberry. The other is "You Caught the Light" - respectively they close out sides A and B of the LP. Doherty told Consequence of Sound that the trio are meticulous with sequencing and "don't buy into the idea that the album, as a format, is over."
  • The song's music video was directed by Sing J. Lee (Gorgon City's "Ready For Your Love," Charli XCX's "Boom Clap"). The clip blends a trippy anime story about space and loss with footage of Doherty singing the track.

I can feel it coming In The Air Tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am
Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord

Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, oh no you don't fool me
Well the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord

In The Air Tonight Song Chart
  • Collins wrote this song about the anger he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea in 1979 - he was so devastated that he left Genesis for a short time. All of the original songs on the Face Value album, including the followup hit "I Missed Again," were at one time intended to be "messages" to his first wife in an attempt to lure her back to him.

The lingering tension caused by the divorce led Collins to the title, as these negative feelings were "In The Air," and affecting not just the couple getting divorced, but the entire family.

By the time the album was released, Collins had moved on and was dating Jill Tavelman, who became his second wife. His split with Jill would inspire the songs on Collins' 1993 album Both Sides.
  • Collins explains the lyrics, "If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand," by saying the drowning is symbolic.
  • The meaning of this song became a pervasive urban myth. The story, which is not true, is that Collins watched as a man who raped his wife drowned. Another version has Collins writing this about about a man who watched another drown, and singing it to him at a concert. Yet another variation claims that when Collins was a young boy, he witnessed a man drowning someone but was too far away to help. Later, he hired a private detective to find the man, sent him a free ticket to his concert, and premiered the song that night with the spotlight on the man the whole time. We repeat, these stories are not true.
  • This was Collins' first single as a solo artist; he claims that he offered it up as a Genesis song, but that his bandmates rejected it, saying it was "too simple." Tony Banks of Genesis insists that Collins never played them the song.
  • The Face Value album sold more than any prior Genesis release, prompting the group to change musical direction.
  • In an interview with Mix magazine, Collins explained that he wrote this song after returning from a tour. Said Collins: "I got back to find that I had a lot of time on my hands because the family wasn't there, I rang up and said, 'Can I have my drum machine?' because I had to start writing some of this music that was inside me. Face Value was all written over a period of a year-and-a-half, and some songs were written overnight. 'In the Air Tonight' was just a drum machine pattern that I took off that CR78 drum machine. You could eliminate certain sounds and program bass drums and snare drums, so I programmed a bass drum part into it, but basically the rest of it was already on there. I probably added an acoustic Fender piano pretty early. I was coming from Genesis recording and rehearsing history where sometimes we didn't know what the vocal was going to be doing when we recorded the track because lyrics were sometimes written after the track was recorded. I remember the first principle I had for making my record was that I would get a voice down very quickly so everything else would fit to the voice. The lyrics you hear for 'In the Air Tonight,' I just sang. I opened my mouth and they came out. I never wrote anything down and then afterward, I listened to it and wrote them down."
  • Collins played this at Live Aid, a benefit concert for famine relief held in 1985. There were stages in London and Philadelphia, and Collins, with the aid of time zone differences and a very fast airplane (the Concorde), was able to perform at both. He played this in both sets.
  • This was featured on the first episode of the TV show Miami Vice. The show used lots of popular music and featured cameos by Sheena Easton and Glenn Frey. It's theme song, by Jan Hammer, was also a hit.
  • Eminem mentioned this in his 2000 song "Stan," which is about a crazed fan. In the song, the character Stan sings to Eminem, "You know that song by Phil Collins, 'In The Air Tonight,' about that guy who could have saved that other guy from drowning but he didn't? Then Phil saw it all then at his show he found him? That's kind of how this is. You could have rescued me from drowning."
  • The group Nonpoint remade this for the 2006 movie Miami Vice.
  • This has charted in the UK on three different occasions. On its original release in 1981 it peaked at #2. In 1988 a re-mix by Dutch DJ and producer Ben Liebrand got to #4. Finally in 2007 after the song was featured in a TV advert for Cadbury's Dairy Milk, featuring a drumming gorilla, the song reached #14.
The Cadbury's television advertisement was one of the best-received commercials in the UK in recent times and it succeeded in helping to boost sales of Dairy Milk by an increase of 9% in a year. Collins was asked by the London Times newspaper whether Cadbury's made it clear to him that the advert would feature a gorilla playing drums to the song. He replied, smiling: "As much as it's possible for such a thing to be made clear."

In Collins' speech at the 2008 Ivor Novello Awards where he was being honored for International Achievement, the Genesis drummer paid tongue-in-cheek homage to the Cadbury's gorilla advert. He quipped: "I have two sons back in Switzerland and my life is now focused around them, but I do know that I will continue to write songs. As for the gorilla, I might put him forward as the next drummer of Genesis."
  • When it emerged that his former wife had run off with a painter and decorator, Collins dryly performed this song on the UK pop music show Top of the Pops with a pot of paint and brush atop the piano. According to the London Times newspaper, the song itself was written on the back of a stray piece of wallpaper.
  • This popularized a new studio effect, which was known as "gated drum" or "gated reverb." Engineer Hugh Padgham had discovered it during 1979 sessions for Peter Gabriel's third album in London, which Collins played on. Collins bonded with Padgham and enlisted him to produce the Face Value album.
  • The guitarist on this track Daryl Stuemer recalled to Uncut magazine June 2008 his recording of his guitar part: "My guitar part was done much later, in a studio in LA. I sat in the control room with Phil, and my amp was out in the studio, as loud as I could get it. I hit this chord, which Phil described as the sound of an electric razor, Rrrrzzzzz. People write me emails about that chord, asking what it. The song's in the key of D minor, but the chord itself has no minor notes. It's a low A, and a D, and another A and a D. But it depends how you play it, it has to have that overdriven, distorted sound from the amp. It's a distant sound, but a distant powerful sound. It's a sound you imagine being deafeningly loud a mile away."
  • This song has provided comedy fodder in a variety of clever ways. Some examples:
It appears in the aptly titled Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters, based on the Adult Swim TV show. Throughout the second half of the movie, Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" plays an integral part, as it is used to foreshadow a relationship between the characters and the mysterious Dr. Weird. Once the song appears, Calamity ensues. Probably the most elaborate use of the song yet.

It is used in the Family Guy episode "Petergeist" during the scene when Stewie is trapped in the TV. He starts singing a few lines form the song as a joke because his voice echoes the way Phil's does in the song.

In the 2009 movie The Hangover, Mike Tyson appears in a hotel room looking for his missing tiger. When the main characters walk in, Tyson is singing this song, and when it gets to the drum part, he makes them stop talking and plays air-drums to it, punctuating at the end by punching one of the guys. (thanks, Stephanie - Stratford, CT and Logan - Troy, MT)
  • In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, there are several levels surrounding a subplot of a Phil Collins concert coming to Vice City. The missions all entail protecting Phil Collins from a gang his manager owes money to. In the final mission of the game, entitled "In The Air Tonight," you must stay on the catwalk of the stage while Phil performs the song and stop gang members from killing him. After you beat the mission, you can return to the stadium, purchase a ticket to the concert and watch an animated video of Phil Collins performing the song on stage. (thanks, Adam - Salisbury, MD)
  • The music video, directed by Stuart Orme, was a popular fixture on a brand new cable network dedicated to music videos: MTV. The clip shows an extreme close-up of Collins singing into the camera, and cuts to images of him sitting in a bare room with mysterious figures appearing and disappearing outside the window. We also see him walking down a corridor full of doors.
  • In 2014, Collins performed this at the Miami Country Day School in Miami, Florida, with his son's middle school band.
  • This was featured on the 2013 pilot for The Americans, starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Soviet KGB spies living in America during the Cold War.

That night they were burning for truth
Down on the corner of 14th and U
They took your soul and they took you for fools
Took all the windows from prisons and schools
Now what's a poor man left to do?

One heart now broken in two
You start untying the hands of the youth
New kids hear the sound of the drumming
Mother Nature your Summer is coming
    Yesterday and today
    Revolution on its way

    Amen
It was The Feast and The Famine
    Amen
It was The Feast and the Famine
    Feast and the Famine

    Crossroads with nothing to lose
Out of the basement and in to the news
Come change, now shit getting heavy
    Salvation at the ready
You look when I walked by
    Still screaming 'til I die
You can't find peace if you can't find a home
You can't survive as an island alone
Black heart with a gaping wound
Put back together by a troubled groove
    Check yourself
    Wreck your brains
    Where is that P.M.A.?

    Amen
It was The Feast and the Famine
    Amen
It was The Feast and the Famine
    Feast and the Famine

    Hey, where is the monument?
    To the dreams we forget?
    We need a monument
    And change will come
    Yeah change will come
Is there anybody there? (Anybody there?)
    Anybody there? (Anybody there?)

  • This is a song from Sonic Highways, an album containing eight songs, each laid down in a different US city. The band would start recording in the studio during the day at each location and then in the evenings, Dave Grohl would interview various local musicians. By day four or five the Foo Fighters frontman would pour over the interview transcripts and outline the songs he wanted to write. Grohl explained to Jimmy Fallon, "I would pick out words, phrases and sentences from the interviews."

He added: "It was meant to represent that whole week we had been there by telling the stories of the people I had talked to."

This track was laid down at Inner Ear Studios, Arlington, Washington DC.

  • The song features Bad Brains as the Foo Fighters' guest of honor. The band formed in Washington DC in 1977 and are widely regarded as among the pioneers of hardcore punk.

    Kyrie Lyrics

    Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison, kyrie

The wind blows hard against this mountain side, across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide, setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old, it holds my memories, my body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine, is where I find myself again

    [Chorus]
Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison, through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison, where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie eleison, on a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old, of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road, or only wished what I could be

  • "Kyrie Eleison" is Greek for "Lord, have mercy." It is used as a prayer in both Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox services. Greek was the original language of the New Testament and it was later translated in to Latin.
  • This song is credited to lead singer Richard Page, keyboardist Steve George and lyricist John Lang. Clearing up an urban legend that Page wrote the song after being attacked, John Lang told the Chicago Sun-Times of July 9th 2004: "Richard Page did write the music and melody, but I am the one who wrote the lyrics. I got the inspiration from singing it as a kid in an Episcopal church in Phoenix. Also, 'Kyrie' had nothing to do with Richard being assaulted, mainly because it wasn't Richard who was assaulted - it was me! But that happened three years before writing 'Kyrie,' and had nothing to do with that song."
  • When this was a hit, very few people listening to Top 40 radio had any idea that they were singing "Lord Have Mercy, Down the Road that I must travel!" The religious significance was mostly lost. (thanks, Jeff - Charleston, SC)
  • Mr. Mister was not a Christian band, but their frontman Richard Page considered this song a prayer. "I get a lot of power from meditation, from being still and realizing that what I'm doing is insignificant compared to the universe," he said. "That's what the song is all about."
  • The group wrote this while they were on tour with Adam Ant. It was a year before they recorded it.
  • The first single from the Welcome to the Real World album was "Broken Wings," which went to #1 US in December 1985, giving the band their first American chart-topper. "Kryie" was the next single from the album, and it made the top spot in March 1986.
  • The music video was shot in December, 1985 when Mr. Mister were opening for Tina Turner on her Private Dancer tour. Director Nick Morris shot footage of the band at their concert in Pembroke Pines, Florida at a venue called the Hollywood Sportatorium. The beach was nearby, so Morris also shot the band there and took footage of them doing rock star stuff before the show: riding in a limo, entering the dressing room, etc.

Morris, a British director who would later do the videos for Europe's "The Final Countdown" and Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)," had never shot a video in America before, and didn't know that you needed release forms to show anyone's face. This caused a problem when after the video was cut and distributed, he was asked for the releases from the older guys on the beach the band is seen interacting with. Fortunately, these guys were regulars at this spot, so a production assistant was able to track them down and get the signatures.
  • The day they started shooting the video, the band read a negative review in the Los Angeles Times that was devastating for Richard Page. "His face dropped and he was in the saddest mood all day thinking he'd come to the end as a credible musician," director Nick Morris told us. "I remember thinking, I won't let my musicians who I'm about to work with read papers on the day of the shoot."

    Heartstrings Lyrics

Doing fine all on my own.
'Cause I know that's right for me.
    Now you're feeling all alone.
I bet you're sorry now but that's what you wanted.
You took me for granted all the time.

    Had to save my heart
Save it from all your evil games
And now it ain't the same
You will have no such luck to try to come inside
    And then to be denied

    Tie my Heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh
    Tie my heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh

Now you know I'm doing well.
You try to catch me when I'm finally free.
You only did this to yourself.
I bet you're sorry now but that's what you wanted.
You took me for granted all the time.

    Had to save my heart
Save it from all your evil games
And now it ain't the same
You will have no such luck to try to come inside
    And then to be denied

    Tie my heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh
    Tie my heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh

    Tie my heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh
    Tie my heartstrings
    I tie my heartstrings oh

    I was fighting, for you
    Now I'm fine, but you
    (For you)

  • The title track of Leighton Meester's debut album, she explained during a Q&A and performance in New York what makes this personal cut so important. "The song 'Heartstrings' is really special to me. It's really more of a very visual: It represents the feeling of the rest of the record," she said. "It's about hiding your feelings and smiling and pretending that you're happy when you're not."

"Actually, I'd say that it represents most of the record, because that's what it's about," Meester added. "It's about just sort of tying your heartstrings off - not allowing yourself to be vulnerable."
  • Jeff Trott, known for his longtime collaboration with Sheryl Crow, came on board as producer for the Heartstrings album. In his Songfacts interview , he explained how he helped Leighton shape her original songs: "She came to me with a bunch of songs that basically just had verses and choruses, but no middle section or a bridge. I would just suggest things like a bridge would be great here, or some kind of instrumental section. Or hey, you could say a lot more in this section.

So then she was just like, well why don't you write one, and then I would just write a bridge. So that's kind of how I collaborated with Leighton on her record. Not at the beginning of writing the song initially, but after the fact."

  • This was written by Irwin Levine and Larry Brown. It is based on the true story of a convict returning from jail.
  • Levine and Brown got the story from a 1971 article in The New York Post, and changed some of the details. It was really a white handkerchief around the tree, but they made it a yellow ribbon because it made for a better song.
  • A song of the same name was used in the 1949 John Wayne movie She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. This is probably where Levine and Brown got the idea for the yellow ribbon.
  • The yellow ribbon became a National symbol in 1980 when Americans put them on trees to remember the hostages being held in Iran. Ten years later, a group called Visual AIDS convinced people attending the Tony Awards to wear small red ribbons as a symbol of AIDS awareness. Soon, many causes produced ribbons with different colors to raise money and awareness. In 2004, the trend extended to rubber bracelets when cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong worked with Nike to promote yellow bracelets labeled "Livestrong" that raised money for cancer research.
  • Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson took the name "Dawn" from the daughter of their record company promotions man, Steve Wax. The song was a #1 hit in Australia in mid 1973, spending 26 weeks on the charts. (thanks, Graham - Windsor, Australia)

    Tumble and Fall Lyrics

It's a want you, it's a need you, it's a hold on through the pain
It's a get through what you got to, 'cause it can't stay the same
It's a long talk with the lights off, it's the last breath in your lungs
It's the deep end that we jump in, it's the love that we become

We're gonna ride the storm out on a lifeboat
Baby this kind of love is all that we know
We're gonna take a walk out on the trapeze
Even in a wild breeze, we could be the best of them all
Even if we Tumble and Fall

    It's a reach out, it's a white flag, it's a forfeit of the game
It's a let go of the ego, and the whisper of your name
It's a fight for, not a defend, it's a stay out in the rain
It's the knowin' that you love me more than anything

We're gonna ride the storm out on a lifeboat
Baby this kind of love is all that we know
We're gonna take a walk out on the trapeze
Even in a wild breeze, we could be the best of them all
Even if we tumble and fall

It's a want you, it's a need you, it's a hold on through the pain
It's a get through what you got to, yeah you got to, yeah we got to

We're gonna ride the storm out on a lifeboat

    Nothing suffocates you more than
The passing of everyday human events
Isolation is the oxygen mask you make
    Your children breath into survive

But I'm not a slave to god
    That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
    That doesn't give a shit

    And when we were good
    You just closed your eyes
    So when we are bad
    We'll scar your minds

    Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
    Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

You'll never grow up to be a big-rock-star-
    Celebrated-victim-of-your-fame
They'll just cut our wrists like
Cheap coupons and say that death
    Was on sale today

    And when we were good
    You just closed your eyes
    So when we are bad
    We'll scar your minds

But I'm not a slave to god
    That doesn't exist
And I'm not a slave to world
    That doesn't give a shit

The death of one is a tragedy
The death of one is a tragedy
The death of one is a tragedy
The death of millions is just a statistic

Sucker punched, down for the count
They stole your thunder then your crown
Paralyzed, just hangin' around, you better get up
    Or get down

Put your money where you're talkin'
Let your assets do the walkin'
So what, the sky is fallin' get up
    Or get down
    In the shadows, outta time
You ain't bound and you ain't blind

Turn The Lights On, turn the lights on, baby
Turn the lights on, lift your hands up
Turn the lights on, turn the lights on, baby
Turn the lights on, lift your hands up
    Lift your hands up

    Swingin' from a chandelier
Ain't no trouble way up here
    Shootin' through the atmosphere
    Get up or get down

Ain't no time to hit the brakes
Flip the switch and let it shake
Wind it up while you're awake

    Get down, get down

  • Little Big Town penned this life-affirming track with their producer Jay Joyce plus songwriters Natalie Hemby (LBT's "Pontoon") and Jeremy Spillman (Eric Church's "Hell on the Heart").

"We were talking about when you're chasing something that you want to do as an artist, and you get knocked down or you're gonna get rejected, you have to decide what you're gonna do at that moment," explained LBT's Karen Fairchild. "You're either gonna pick yourself up and be a better artist, better person, or you're just gonna lie down and take it and just go away. We see it happen all the time. So many talented people come to Nashville and some quit, and they might be the best singers and songwriters and they just give up, because they get knocked down a couple of times."
