Turning It Inside Out Lyrics

Sometimes I, could leave it all behind
Step off and find a place, to make a brand new life

And when we talk, I wonder who'll break first
We take it all apart, and twist each other's words
Look at us now, look at us now
Turning It Inside Out

And it won't turn, anymore

Sometimes I, could leave and disappear
Wait for this all to pass, and for the air to clear
Look at us now, look at us now
Turning it inside out

We're turning it inside out
And it won't turn, anymore

I've lost my place
It all
It's kissing all my dreams away

  • Some of this song's lyrics provoked concerns that Phil Selway was thinking of leaving Radiohead. NME asked the drummer if such lyrics as "Sometimes I could leave it all behind" should worry the band's fans. He replied: "Inevitably frustrations can get the better of you if you're working in any kind of close relationship, but there is a song and then there is the reality of life. It's not sent out as a warning signal."

    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Lyrics

    In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida honey,
Don'tcha know that I love you?
    In-a-gadda-da-vida baby,
Don'tcha know that I'll always be true?

    Oh won'tcha come with me,
    And take my hand?
    Oh won'tcha come with me,
    And walk this land?

    Please take my hand...
    Let me tell ya now.

  • This was written by Doug Ingle, Iron Butterfly's vocalist and keyboard player. His father was a church organist.
  • The title was supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden." Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk, on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments.
  • Doug Ingle did not intend it this way when he wrote the song, but he album version is over 17 minutes long. The single was edited for radio.
  • Ron Bushy's drum solo is not as long as people think; it only runs about 2 1/2 minutes, from 6.30 to a little past 9 minutes. Doug Ingle's organ solo immediately follows. (thanks, James - Tracy, CA, for above 2)
  • The band's original guitar player quit before this was recorded. He was replaced by Eric Braun, who had only played the guitar for 3 months.
  • The title loosely translates as "In The Garden Of Life."
  • This was the first hit song that could be classified as "Heavy Metal." The phrase was introduced that year in the Steppenwolf song "Born To Be Wild."
  • Iron Butterfly would have performed this at Woodstock, but they didn't make it because they were stuck at the airport.
  • Hip-Hop artist Nas has 2 different songs that sample this. The first was "Thief's Theme" from his 2003 double album Street's Disciple. The second was the title track of his 2006 album Hip-Hop is Dead. (thanks, Nick - Erwin, NC)
  • Danny Weiss of Iron Butterfly was recommended to Al Kooper by David Crosby (of Crosby, Stills, & Nash), right when Kooper was forming Blood Sweat & Tears. As given in Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards , "I loved the guitarist, introduced myself, and explained this concept to him. He thought it was a good idea, but insisted that he was committed to the band he was in. His name was Danny Weiss, and his band was Iron Butterfly. He left soon after we met anyway, and and joined the great but doomed band Rhinoceros."
  • The recording that is heard on the album was done as soundcheck filler for engineer Don Casale while the band waited for the arrival of producer Jim Hilton. However, after the rehearsal was completed it was agreed that the performance was of sufficient quality that another take wasn't needed.
  • The song was used in The Simpsons episode "Bart Sells His Soul," where Bart switches a hymn out for this song and convinces the Reverend Lovejoy it is penned by I. Ron Butterfly. The whole 17-minute version is played by the First Church of Springfield's exhausted church organist.

  • This song finds Rick Ross spitting tales of a well-paid prostitute who can afford an affluent lifestyle. R. Kelly contributes a verse as well as crooning on the hook. The Chicago singer previously featured on the Miami-bred MC's 2007 single "Speedin'."
  • Released as the first official single off Ross' seventh studio album, Hood Billionaire, the song was premiered on Hot 97 on October 2, 2014.
  • Ross explained on Power 105's The Breakfast Club that he wanted to work with Kelly because he's an admirer of his talent. "I'm a fan of the music, the writing skills [and] the creativity," he said. "R. Kelly has flawlessly brought us dope records. That's just speaking on the homie, previous. A Long Walk Lyrics

    You're here, I'm pleased
    I really dig your company
Your style, your smile, your peace mentality
    Lord, have mercy on me
I was blind, now I can see
What a king's supposed to be
Baby I feel free, come on and go with me

Let's take A Long Walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
    Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe we can talk about Surah 31:18

Your background it ain't squeaky clean (shit)
Sometimes we all got to swim upstream
You ain't no saint, we all are sinners
But you put your good foot down and make your soul a winner
I respect that, man you're so phat
And you're all that, plus supreme
Then you're humble man I'm numb
Yo with feeling, I can feel everything that you bring

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
    Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe we can talk about Revelation 3:17

Or maybe we can see a movie
Or maybe we can see a play on Saturday (Saturday)
Or maybe we can roll a tree and feel the breeze and listen to a symphony
Or maybe chill and just be, or maybe
Maybe we can take a cruise and listen to the Roots or maybe eat some passion fruit
Or maybe cry to the blues
Or maybe we could just be silent
    Come on, Come on

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark

  • This is about a date Scott went on with a man she could connect with mentally and emotionally. His name is Lyzel, and he eventually became her husband.
  • This was the first song Scott ever recorded. The first take of her vocals is the one they used.
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff, known for his work with The Fresh Prince (Will Smith), created the backing track and took Scott into the studio to record this. He burned some copies of it and gave the CDs to people he knew in the music business. She was quickly singed by Hidden Beach Records.
  • Director Jessy Terrero shot the music video in the North Philadelphia neighborhood where Jill Scott grew up. The clip starts out in black-and-white and adds pops of color as Scott strolls through the area with her date. The label hated Scott's hair, which was shaved in the back, so Terrero added some distractions in post-production, including a pigeon flying by Scott's head. DJ Jazzy Jeff also makes a cameo appearance.

    Mabel Normand Lyrics

    Natural inner beauty
I guess you could say she's just an unapproachable comedienne
Haven't much faith in her talent
    She didn't work
No comedienne has not been the clown
    She did her work,
But her heart was quietly crying
I guess she even felt guilty
    'Bout even dying
    Sad Mabel Normand

    So my friend is continuing
    On a destructive road
His life passes before him like an
    Unfortunate circumstance
He and his friend are at odds
    And he is not winning...
Why does someone always have to win?
    He says it matters...
Strange things do follow when you love someone
So you put that someone in exile
How about I call you Beloved Exile...

    He called today
    He says, "Don't give up"
I ask him, "What are you talking about?"
I said things are not the same...
Since you've been gone Rome burned down
And still it's all the same
So I moved away from the house that held nothing
    But waiting for messages
And all through the day's seasons
I went running with the sun
And I pray every day for the answers
In a still and almost silent night
He began to hide his beauty
And I learned to say the words
Well, just whose side are you on, anyway?
    You change sides
    What does it matter?
    Still you change sides
Every other day you just change sides

So, continue on your destructive road
Oh, your life passes before me
    Like an unknown circumstance
You and your friend are at odds
    And you are not winning
Why does someone always have to win?
And all those races that are run
    They cause patterns
Strange things do follow when you love someone
So you put that someone in exile
And you say, "I'll write a book about it and call it Beloved Exile"

Well, her life was a gas
    Simply everything that happened
Well, the old lady said, yes it was sad
    She fought a losing battle
    One day at a time
She might even make it through tomorrow
Maybe in another show, natural inner beauty
I guess you could just say she was just unapproachable
    Baby, comedienne
    So beautiful, so beautiful
    She fought a losing battle
She might even make it through tomorrow
    So beautiful, so beautiful
    Sad we won't know her

  • Stevie Nicks recalled to Billboard magazine how writing this song about the drug-addicted actress Mabel Normand led her to tackle her own addictions. "Mabel was an amazing actress and comedian from the '20s, and she was a terrible cocaine addict," Nicks explained. "She eventually died of tuberculosis, but it was really her drug addiction that killed her."

"I saw a documentary of her in 1985, when I was at my lowest point with the blow," she added. "I was watching TV one night, the movie came on, and I really felt a connection with her. That's when I wrote the song. Less than a year later, I went to rehab at Betty Ford."

Radio, I'd sit alone and watch your light
My only friend through teenage nights
And everything I had to know
I heard it on my radio

You gave them all those old time stars
Through wars of worlds; invaded by Mars
You made 'em laugh, you made 'em cry
You made us feel like we could fly
    Radio

So don't become some background noise
A backdrop for the girls and boys
Who just don't know or just don't care
And just complain when you're not there
You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour
    Radio

All we hear is Radio ga-ga
    Radio goo-goo
    Radio ga-ga
All we hear is Radio ga-ga
    Radio blah blah
    Radio, what's new?
    Radio, someone still loves you

We watch the shows, we watch the stars
On videos for hours and hours
We hardly need to use our ears
How music changes through the years

Let's hope you never leave, old friend
Like all good things, on you we depend
So stick around because we might miss you
When we grow tired of all this visual
You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour

    Radio Ga Ga Song Chart
  • Queen drummer Roger Taylor wrote this song. When it charted, all four members of the group had written at least one Top-10 hit.
  • Roger Taylor wrote this as a critique of radio stations, which were becoming commercialized and playing the same songs over and over (and this was before radio was deregulated, allowing companies to own multiple stations in a market, resulting in more corporate ownership, less competition and generally bad radio).
  • Taylor claimed that he was inspired to write this after watching MTV. He noticed that lots of kids were watching the channel instead of listening to the radio.
  • The video is based on the 1926 movie Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang. Queen had to pay the German government to use clips of it in the video.
  • An extended version was released as a 12" single at the same time.
  • Originally, this was "Radio Ca-Ca," which was something Roger Taylor's part-French son Felix exclaimed one day in trying to say the radio was bad ("radio, CACA!). The phrase stuck with Taylor and inspired the anti-commercial radio themes in the lyrics.

Taylor liked the title, but the rest of the group objected and asked for a re-write. As a result, it went from a song condemning radio ("Ca-Ca") to praising it ("Ga Ga"). Interestingly however, even in the final recorded version, the phrase "Ca-Ca" is present - maybe as a compromise for Taylor?
  • Queen stole the show at Live-Aid when Freddie Mercury, battling laryngitis, got everybody in Wembly Stadium singing the chorus of this song.
  • The extras in the video got the clapping sequence right on the first try, but it took practice for the members of Queen to get it down. Director David Mallet was surprised the extras picked up the routine so easily, considering they'd never heard the song, which hadn't been released yet. (thanks, Jonathon - Clermont, FL)
  • The rock band Electric Six recorded this on their 2005 album Señor Smoke. In the video, their lead singer Dick Valentine is shown as the ghost of Freddie Mercury appearing in front of his grave, which caused controversy amongst Queen fans. Valentine was quick to stress that it was meant in tribute, not to denigrate the group - the band were massive Queen fans. (thanks, Logan - Troy, MT)
  • Lady Gaga took her name from this song. Born Stefani Germanotta, she started using the moniker when she needed a stage name. Who came up with the name is a matter of dispute, as her former producer Rob Fusari claims that he originated it, while the singer says it was given to her by her co-workers in her burlesque days.
  • When director David Mallet was coming up with the concept for the music video, he wanted to stray from the usual performance pieces full of guitar solos and drum fills. "And even [guitarist] Brian May agreed to that," Mallet told the documentary series Video Killed the Radio Star. Freddie Mercury suggested the Metropolis concept, but Mallet wanted to make sure the band still played a key role in the clip. "So we built that funny car and them flying through the air, and used the wide shots from Metropolis ... All I was trying to do is find some way of fitting Metropolis into a different setting, and I thought, what if we make the whole video a period - wartime, for instance, or semi-wartime, and it would tie it all together. And it did."
  • Some critics feel the choreography in the hand-clapping scene is a reference to Nazis, an idea that Mallet dismisses: "It didn't really have any bearing on Nazi rallies at all." Roger Taylor added: "That section was meant to sort of portray the mind control of the workers in the movie Metropolis."

Crazy Little Thing Called Love Song Chart
  • Freddie Mercury wrote this while Queen were recording The Game in Germany. He wrote it while taking a bubble bath in his room at the Munich Hilton. Peter Hince, the head of Queen's road crew, recalled to Mojo magazine September 2009: "The idea for the song came to him while he was in the bath. He emerged, wrapped in a towel, I handed him the guitar and he worked out the chords there and then. Fred had this knack of knowing a great pop song."

Freddie acknowledged that perhaps his limited talent on the guitar helped shape the song: "'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can't play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It's a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn't work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think."
  • This sounded a lot more like Elvis Presley than Queen. It was a different sound for the group, but their fans loved it.
  • This was the first song on which Freddie Mercury played rhythm guitar. He was keen to keep the song minimal, despite his limited guitar knowledge, and producer Mack claimed that he rushed into the studio to record it "before Brian could get there!"

He also played the guitar solo on the original recording, but the tapes were lost so Brian May played the solo instead, using a Fender Telecaster to achieve the period sound. May didn't seem to like playing another guitar, and even when playing live, after performing the solo on the Telecaster he would immediately switch back to his Red Special.
  • At first, this was not released in the US. Since the album was not out yet, radio stations there started playing import copies of the single. This led Queen's record company to release it in America, about 3 months after it came out in England.
  • Mercury's name is in the lyrics. He sings, "Are you ready," and the band sings, "Ready Freddie."

This section took on a poignant edge after Mercury's death when the song was performed with guest singers, as the lyric was never altered regardless of the vocalist. Fans would take this opportunity to bellow the 'Ready, Freddie!' lyric back at the band in remembrance of the singer.
  • On stage, this was an important part of the show. Brian May often used three different guitars during the song: the first verse was played by Freddie alone with his guitar, then Brian joined with another Ovation Acoustic; before the third verse he had already switched to a Telecaster on which he performed the solo. During the singalong part (famous for its "ready Freddie" line) Brian again changed instruments to his homemade Red Special. From 1984 onwards Mercury replaced the acoustic with another Telecaster.
  • The single was very successful for the band, hitting #2 in the UK and becoming their first US #1 hit, There's an unconfirmed legend (commented on by Roger Taylor on the radio show In The Studio, and by Brian May on his website) that declares John Lennon was inspired by this song to go back to the music business. Whether it's true or false is still unknown, but it is a fact that Lennon listened to Queen and he did try new influences on his Double Fantasy album. (thanks, Sebas - Tokyo, Japan, for above 2)
  • Josh Kelley recorded this for the 2005 Queen tribute album Killer Queen. (thanks, Rachel - South Point, OH)

    Song For Someone Lyrics

You got a face not spoiled by beauty
I have some scars from where I've been
You've got eyes that can see right through me
You’re not afraid of anything they've seen
I was told that I would feel nothing the first time
I don’t know how these cuts heal
But in you I found a rhyme

    If there is a light
    You can’t always see
    And there is a world
    We can’t always be
    If there is a dark
    Now we shouldn't doubt
    And there is a light
    Don’t let it go out

    And this is a song
    A Song For Someone
    This is a song
    A song for someone

You let me into a conversation
A conversation only we could make
You break and enter my imagination
    Whatever’s in there
    It’s yours to take
I was told I’d feel nothing the first time
    You were slow to heal
But this could be the night

    If there is a light
    You can’t always see
    And there is a world
    We can’t always be
    If there is a dark
    Within and without
    And there is a light
    Don’t let it go out

    And this is a song
    A song for someone
    This is a song
This is a song for someone

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    And I’m a long way
    From your hill of Calvary
    And I’m a long way
From where I was, where I need to be
    If there is a light
    You can’t always see
    And there is a world
    We can’t always be
    If there is a kiss
    I stole from your mouth
    And there is a light
    Don’t let it go out

  • Bono most likely had in mind his teenage sweetheart-turned-long-standing wife Ali Hewson when he penned this tender song of awkward first love. The pair started dating in 1976, right around the time U2 was formed.

I was told that I would feel
    Nothing the first time
I don't know how these cuts heal
But in you I found a rhyme

Speaking to Dave Fanning during a RTE two hour Songs of Innocence special, Bono explained the album is "all about first journeys." He added that this song "is about the awkwardness of falling in love and sex."
  • The song is one of four tracks on Songs of Innocence that was co-produced by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, best known for working with pop artists lile Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé. OneRepublic opened for U2 on their 360 Tour dates during the summer of 2010.

Asked by Q magazine why the band recruited Tedder, Bono explained that he was brought in for his gift for melody. The U2 frontman said: "The popsters are beating the others on melody. Not in lyrics, not in their aesthetic, but they're writing better tunes. That was not the case with The Beatles and the Stones. The Beatles were writing better tunes than the popsters and not compromising on their lyrics and their aesthetic."

"When Brian Burton [Danger Mouse] ran out of time to work with us – and he's by far the biggest presence on the album as a producer – we got to work with Paul Epworth, we got to work with Ryan Tedder," he added. "Their only interest is in melody that you haven't heard before and the uniqueness of it. So that changed the game for us."
  • The nine-minute short film for this song stars actor Woody Harrelson portraying a man being released from prison. The visual was directed by Vincent Haycock who has previously shot shorts for Paul McCartney ("Early Days") and Lana Del Rey ("West Coast") and also stars Harrelson's daughter Zoe Harrelson.

The clip is thematically linked to the Sundance TV series Rectify, which follows the story of Daniel Holden after his release from 19 years on death row.
  • A second Matt Mahurin-directed moody black-and-white clip video was released. The video features a performance from Bono filmed earlier in 2015 in Malibu interspersed with imagery of barren desert and night skies. The director and the U2 frontman previously worked together on 1993's "Love Is Blindness" and Mahurin has also worked with many other high profile artists over the years including Metallica, R.E.M., and Alice In Chains.

  • Freddie Mercury wrote this in France after watching the Tour de France bicycle race ride by his hotel. The band were recording Jazz in the French countryside mainly as a tax break - Roger Taylor claimed in the Days of our Lives documentary that they were being taxed as much as 98% on royalties on previous albums, hence why they defected to France and later Montreux in Switzerland to record future albums.
  • This was released as a double A-side single with "Fat Bottomed Girls." They ran back to back on the album, and many radio stations played them together. The "Fat Bottomed Girls" are mentioned in this song's lyrics.
  • Wherever Queen played, bicycle shops sold out of bells bought by fans who brought them to the show to ring them during this song.
  • Queen staged a bicycle race around Wimbledon stadium in England to promote the single. 65 professional models were hired to race nude, with special effects hiding the nudity in the original video; a photo from the race was used on the cover of the single and images from the race were used for the video.

Queen rented 65 bicycles for the race. When the company found out what they were used for, they refused to take the bikes back unless the band paid for new seats.

The album contained a poster of the women in the bicycle race. It was left out of some copies for stores that did not want to carry it, but fans could mail order the poster if they desired. A bikini bottom was digitally added to the cover of the single, and on some US releases a bra was also added.
  • At a 1978 concert in Madison Square Garden, Queen re-created the video by having women with very little clothing ride bicycles around the stage.
  • Queen had a lot of success the year before with another double A-side, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions."
  • Be Your Own Pet covered this for the 2005 Queen tribute album Killer Queen. (thanks, Rachel - South Point, OH)
  • The song features surprisingly complex instrumentation, and the Jazz album as a whole perhaps represents the apex of Queen's experimentation. It features an imaginative solo played exclusively on bicycle bells, unusual chord progressions, shifts in time signature (from 4/4 to 6/8) and a whole host of pop culture references in the lyrics, including mentions of religion, the Watergate scandal, drugs, Jaws, Star Wars and Frankenstein.

    Foolish Father Lyrics

    Simple love songs
    Drenched in poisons
    I've been out of long

    Hesitate to throw your stones
    When criminals are victims
    Looking back into our past
There's no cause for these symptoms now

    Forgive your Foolish Father
He did the best that he could do
    You are his daughter
    He'd do anything for you

Think of how destroyed he feels
    Walking to his grave plot
Knowing that the one he loves
Hates him with all of her heart

    Forgive your foolish father
He did the best that he could do
    You are his daughter
    He'd do anything for you

    Please Remember your dad
    Although he's been astray
    How comical
The stuff that makes a man

    Forgive your foolish father
He did the best that he could do
    You are his daughter
    He'd do anything for you

Anything for you, anything for you
    Anything, anything, anything for you
    Anything for you

Everything will be alright in the end
Everything will be alright in the end
Everything will be alright in the end
Everything will be alright in the end

  • This song finds Rivers Cuomo asking someone to forgive the poor parenting skills of their dad. He told NME the lyrics, "could be me singing about my father or me singing about my daughter."
  • Rivers' father, Frank Cuomo, walked out on his family in the mid-'70s, when the Weezer frontman was about four. Rivers saw Frank infrequently after that and he sung about his absent dad on Weezer's 1994 hit "Say It Ain't So." They renewed their relationship around the time "Say It Ain't So" was released and Frank has become a big presence in his son's life in recent years. "Now I see him all the time," Rivers told Rolling Stone. "Now that I'm a father, I've forgiven my parents."
