No Sugar Tonight Lyrics

Lonely feeling deep inside
Find a corner where I can hide
Silent footsteps crowding me
Sudden darkness but I can see

No Sugar Tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)

In the silence of her mind
Quiet movements where I can find
Grabbing for me with her eyes
Now I'm falling from her skies

No sugar tonight in my coffee
No sugar tonight in my tea
No sugar to stand beside me
No sugar to run with me

(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)
(Dat'n-doo-dow-dow-dat'n-doo-dow)

Jocko says yes, and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standing in each other's way
You're tripping back now to places you've been to
You wonder what you're gonna find
You know you've been wrong but it won't be long
Before you leave 'em all far behind

'Cause it's the new Mother Nature taking over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature taking over
She's gettin' us all
She's gettin' us all

Jocko said no, when I came back last time
It's looking like I lost a friend
No use callin' 'cause the sky is fallin'
And I'm getting pretty near the end
A smoke-filled room in a corner basement
The situation must be right
A bag of goodies and a bottle of wine
We're gonna get it on right tonight

'Cause it's the new Mother Nature taking over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature taking over
She's gettin' us all
She's getting' us all

(Lonely feelin')
Jocko says yes and I believe him
(Deep inside) when we talk about the things I say
(Find a corner) she hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
(Where I can hide)when they're standin' in each other's way
(Silent footsteps) you're driven back now to places you've been to
(Crowdin' me) you're wonderin' what you're gonna find
(Sudden darkness) you know you've been wrong and it won't be long
(But I can see) before you leave 'em all far behind

'Cause it's the new Mother Nature takin' over
It's the new splendid lady come to call
It's the new Mother Nature takin' over
She's gettin' us all, yeah, she's gettin' us all

Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (Mother Nature)
Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (nature)
Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)
Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)
Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (sugar)
Da-un-do-dow dow, da-un-do-dow (nature)

  • John Presho, who knew Randy Bachman and worked security for his band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, gave us this account of how the song came together:
"Randy told me that the inspiration for writing 'No Sugar Tonight' came to him from an experience he had walking in downtown Berkeley, California. Randy was walking and talking with a band mate when he looked up and saw four big biker guys walking on the same sidewalk approaching them. Randy made up his mind to cross the street rather than confront the bikers, then he heard the skidding of car tires. Just as Randy was stepping off the sidewalk the car came to a skidding stop and a biker lady got out of the car, walked over to one of the bikers and engaged in a heated conversation with him. When the argument ended the biker lady walked back to the car, opened the door, turned around, then shouted to the biker, 'One more thing honey, you're not getting any sugar tonight' indicating he was not going to get any sex that night from her. The car took off, Randy crossed the street went back to his hotel and started writing the song based on that experience."
  • This was the last Guess Who hit Randy Bachman played on. He left due to his Mormon religious beliefs before this became popular, and went on to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The band did not tour America when this was a hit there because Bachman left the group. They reunited and toured in 2000, 30 years after this was a hit.
  • At the same time this was released as a single, it was included as the B-side of The Guess Who's hit "American Woman."
  • On the album, this goes seamlessly into "New Mother Nature." Disc Jockeys usually play them together. Guess Who vocalist Burton Cummings was not finished with "New Mother Nature," and Bachman was not done with "No Sugar Tonight," so they put the 2 songs together to make a complete piece on the album.
  • In 2001, this was honored by a Canadian music association for getting over 100,000 plays on Canadian radio.

    Takin' Care Of Business Lyrics

You get up every morning from your alarm clock's warning
Take the 8:15 into the city
There's a whistle up above and people pushin', people shovin'
And the girls who try to look pretty
And if your train's on time, you can get to work by nine
And start your slaving job to get your pay
If you ever get annoyed, look at me I'm self-employed
I love to work at nothing all day

And I'll be taking care of business (every day)
Taking care of business (every way)
I've been taking care of business (it's all mine)
Taking care of business and working overtime, work out

If it were easy as fishin' you could be a musician
If you could make sounds loud or mellow
Get a second-hand guitar, chances are you'll go far
If you get in with the right bunch of fellows
People see you having fun just a-lying in the sun
Tell them that you like it this way
It's the work that we avoid, and we're all self-employed
We love to work at nothing all day

And we be taking care of business (every day)
Taking care of business (every way)
We be been taking care of business (it's all mine)
Taking care of business and working overtime

    Mercy
    Whoo
    All right

Take good care of my business
    When I'm away, every day
    Whoo

You get up every morning from your alarm clock's warning

Takin' Care Of Business Song Chart
  • This song was written by Randy Bachman , who also sang lead on the track. He explained to classicbands.com that he came up with the idea for the song in the late-'60s while he was still a member of The Guess Who. Bachman loved "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles, and he used that music to create a song about going to work called "White Collar Worker," which needed a new hook to complete. The song lay dormant until Bachman formed Bachman-Turner Overdrive and were playing a show when lead singer Fred Turner's voice gave out. Forced to sing for a set, Bachman told the band to "Play these three chords over and over - C, B flat, and F - endlessly and when I get to the hook, help me out."

Bachman was listening to C-Fox radio on the way to the club and heard the DJ say they were "Takin' Care of Business," which gave him the idea for the hook. Singing his lyrics to "White Collar Worker," Bachman sang "Takin' Care of Business" in the breakdown, and he had his song.

The band captured the feel of jamming in the club by having Bachman sing it, which Turner appreciated since it would give his voice a rest at their shows. Bachman had a sore throat and a head cold when he recorded his vocals.
  • The song propelled the phrase "Takin' care of business" into the popular lexicon, forever to be used by athletes, performers and the common man to indicate they are on the job.

Although "Takin' care of business" had never before been sung in a popular song, it was far from the first use of the phrase in the musical landscape. Elvis Presley loved the saying - he wore a "TCB" necklace and called his backing group "The TCB Band." Aretha Franklin alluded to it in her hit cover of "Respect," where she sang, "Take care, TCB."
  • Randy Bachman: "Ralph (Murphy) and I wrote a song in '67 called 'A Little Bit Of Rain.' That riff is used in the middle of 'Takin' Care Of Business,' just to break the monotony because 'Takin' Care Of Business' was three chords over and over and over. It had no bridge. No hook. No song format, other than that it was 'Louie Louie.' Endless, mind-bashing of three chords. And the original version, as I explained at the Ryman, had twelve chords. That's why nobody liked it. It had an incredible number of chords."
  • While the song title implies an industrious responsibility, a closer listen reveals that this song is more of a slacker anthem. The singer is presumably unemployed, and he "loves to work at nothing all day."
  • Norman Durkee played the piano on this track. So who is this Norman fellow? John Presho, who knew Bachman and worked security at their concerts, gives this account:
"Randy Bachman told me that when BTO was in the recording studio the record producer wasn't happy with the raw version of that song. BTO took a time out, ordered a pizza and went back to work on the song. A while later there was a knock on the studio door and it was the pizza delivery man. After giving the band their pizza he commented that 'Takin' Care of Business' was a great song but it needed some piano playing. The pizza man introduced himself as Norman and said that he was a piano player. BTO thanked and tipped him and sent him on his way. Hours later with no improvement in the song they decided to call Norman, but no one got his phone number or could remember the name of the pizza place. BTO called a half dozen pizza houses before they were able to track him down. The band paid Herman's $75 to join the musicians union so he could play the piano in the recording studio."
  • Throughout the early '90s, this was used in commercials for Office Depot to promote their business services. Hillary Clinton used it at many of her campaign events in 2008 when she ran for president of the US.
  • A cover of this song was included on the first rap album released by a major label. It happened in 1980 when Kurtis Blow recorded it for his self-titled album.
  • This holds the record for largest guitar jam in history. On May 7, 1994, Bachman led 1,322 mostly-amateur guitarists in a performance of this that lasted 68 minutes. The event was held in Vancouver.
  • The Guess Who played this on their 2000 reunion tour. Bachman was in The Guess Who before leaving to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
  • Randy Bachman and C.F Turner reunited in 2000 for an appearance on The Simpsons that featured this song. At a concert, Homer heckles the band until they play this, then tells them to "Get to the 'working overtime' part."
  • The song title as well as the band's name are mentioned in the Crude but humorous video game Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, where a character claims the song was written about her. (thanks, Logan - Troy, MT)
  • Bachman's autobiography is titled Randy Bachman, Takin' Care Of Business.

  • This song is about the very intense relationship lead singer Wes Scantlin had with an ex-girlfriend. He couldn't control her and she couldn't control him, which made it very combustible.
  • This was Puddle Of Mudd's first single. It was released on Fred Durst's label, Flawless Records. Scantlin gave one of Durst's bodyguards a demo tape when he got backstage at a Limp Bizkit show, and Durst signed the band when he heard it.
  • Scantlin was arrested in March 2002, after fighting with his girlfriend in a car. In another example of life imitating art, there is a scene in the video of Scantlin and his girlfriend fighting in a car by the side of a highway and never quite making up. Charges were not filed.

    It was just the beginning
I think that I was meant to be next to you, to you

To earth, to earth, to earth, to earth
We can never come back to earth, to earth, to earth

Are you living your life or just waiting to die?

  • This song is a collaboration with Fall Out Boy. Aoki told Billboard magazine: "I personally worked with Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump. They wrote their lyrics in the studio and sang the vocals. Then later, in a separate studio, the band worked on their live instrumentation, so you get to hear the bass, guitar and drums mixed into a dance record. They were one of my favorite rock collaborations."

"With the rock, there's the instrumental element," he added. "The mixing process is a bit more complex. It's a bigger beast. But I learned a lot from working with Linkin Park. In the twilight glow I see her
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we'd never meet again

Love is like a dying ember
    And only memories remain

We'll stroll hand in hand again

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain Song Chart
  • Even by the standards of sorrowful country songs, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" is one somber tune. The singer kisses his love goodbye, knowing he'll never see her again. As he sings it, he's now an old man who never found true love again and looks forward to meeting her in heaven.

Singing the song night after night took an emotional toll on Nelson, and was a notorious drinker in the late '70s. He explained in a Hot Press interview: "It's really difficult to sing 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' or 'Always On My Mind' without getting emotionally involved, especially when the audience gets emotionally involved and you feel their feelings. You can only wallow in your own misery for so long without saying, 'Wait a minute, I want a drink!'"
  • Nelson acclaimed as a songwriter, but he didn't write this one. It was composed by Fred Rose, whose country hits include "Crazy Heart," "Don't Bring Me Posies," "Take These Chains From My Heart" and "Kaw-Liga."

Roy Acuff, who was Rose' partner in the music publishing company Acuff-Rose Music, was the first to record the song, releasing it as a single in 1947 credited to Roy Acuff And His Smoky Mountain Boys. In ensuing years, many other artists recorded the song, including Roger Whittaker, Gene Vincent and Slim Whitman.

Willie Nelson recorded the song for his concept album Red Headed Stranger, which is based on a song of the same name written by Carl Stutz and Edith Lindeman and recorded by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith. In that song, a mysterious rider comes through town leading a horse that belonged to his dead lover. Nelson revised the tale to make the stranger a preacher who killed his lover because she was cheating on him. "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" fit the concept of the album, as it finds the stranger thinking back to his lost love.
  • Willie Nelson first made the Hot 100 as a songwriter in 1961 with "Crazy" (#9, recorded by Patsy Cline) and "Hello Walls" (#12, recorded by Faron Young), but this was his first trip to the chart as an artist. It was also his first #1 country hit, and it earned him the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Nelson's singing career took off, and he soon became a household name.
  • This was the last song Elvis Presley played before he died. In the early morning of August 16, 1977, he played it on his piano in Graceland. Later that day, he died from an overdose of prescription drugs. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Red Headed Stranger was Nelson's first album with Columbia Records. As part of the deal, Nelson was allowed to choose who played on his albums, and he used his own band instead of session musicians. This bucked Nashville standards, but gave the album a distinctive sound that proved very successful. Nelson also tweaked his image after the album was released, positioning himself as more of an outlaw type.

The creative control Nelson was granted on this album didn't last long - a few years later he found himself at odds with the label when they rejected some of his work.
  • Nelson has performed this song with many esteemed singers. He played it with Vince Gill and Albert Lee at the 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival; with Shania Twain for his Lost Highway album; and with Ashley Monroe for a CMT Crossroads special.

And if I had to give you up

    And I ain't goin nowhere
It took awhile to get me in
And I'm gonna take my time
Don't fight that good shit in your ear
Now Let Me Blow Ya Mind

    [Eve]
They want to bank up, crank up
    ?It's been a week?
Shank up, haters want to come after me
You ain't a ganster, prankster, too much to eat
Snakes in my path want to smile ?after me

Now while you grittin your teeth
    Frustration baby you gotta breathe
Take a lot more that you to get rid of me
You see I do what they can't do, I just do me
ain't no stress when it comes to stage, get what you see
Meet me in the lab, pen and pad, don't believe
Huh, sixteens mine, create my own lines
Love for my wordplay that's hard to find
Sophomore, I ain't scared, one of a kind
All I do is contemplate ways to make your fans mine
Eyes bloodshot, stressin, chills up your spine
Huh, sick to your stomach wishin I wrote your lines

    CHORUS
    [Eve]
    Let your bones crack
Your back pop, I can't stop
Excitement, glock shots from your stash box
Fuck it, thugged out, I respect the cash route
Locked down, blastin, sets while I mash out
    Yeah nigga, mash out, D-are-E
    Back track, think back, E-V-E
Do you like that (ooooh), you got to I know you
Had you in a trance first glance from the floor too
Don't believe I'll show you, take you with me
Turn you on, pension gone, give you relief
Put your trust in a bomb when you listen to me
?Dancin much, get it all? now I'm complete, uh huh
Still stallion, brick house, pile it on
Ryde or Die, bitch, double are, can't crawl

Stefani was looking to get her solo career going, and her label boss at Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine, put her together with producer Dr. Dre to work on this track. Under Iovine's guidance, Stefani did very well with and without No Doubt: her 2004 debut solo album Love.Angel.Music.Baby was a huge hit. At the time, however, Eve was much better known as a solo artist.
  • This beat-driven track was written by four producers: Dr. Dre (credited as Andre Young), Stevie J, Scott Storch and Mike Elizondo. Dr. Dre produced the song, which was an interesting pairing considering his history with Eve. He had originally signed Eve to his Aftermath label, then dropped her after 8 months, with the lady rapper releasing her #1 charting debut album Let There Be Eve... Ruff Ryders' First Lady on the Ruff Ryders label. While recording this song, Dre and Eve constantly argued in the studio and still managed to produce a hit.
  • After this successful collaboration, Eve returned the favor by appearing on the Gwen Stefani song "Rich Girl" from her Love Angel Music Baby album. (thanks, Jimoh - The Bronx, NY)
  • Won the 2001 MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video. Moby's "South Side," which also featured Stefani, won the award for Best Male Video.
  • Won the 2001 Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

    Give me wide
    Ground to run
    And foregone

  • Pixies lead singer Black Francis wrote "Caribou" for the group's debut album, though he confessed to NME he has "absolutely no memory of writing that song."

But that doesn't mean he dislikes it; in fact, it's one of his favorites. He likes playing it so much that even when it's not on a setlist, he'll swap out a different song so he can sneak it in.
  • Black Francis told NME the abstraction of this song is related to reincarnation, "maybe even the singer of the song is reincarnated as a caribou."
  • Black Francis and drummer David Lovering call this one of the group's defining songs with its juxtaposing elements like soft, sweet singing and screaming. "It kind of runs the whole gamut of things that we do with music," Francis explained.
  • Lovering says he borrowed a friend's drum set when the band recorded this at Fort Apache Studios in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The Way You Do The Things You Do Lyrics

You got a smile so bright
You know you could have been a candle
    I'm holding you so tight
You know you could have been a handle
The way you swept me off my feet
You know you could've been a broom
And babe you smell so sweet
You know you could've been some perfume

Well you could of been anything that you wanted to
    I can tell
The Way You Do The Things You Do

    As pretty as you are
You know you could've been a flower
    If good looks were minutes
You know you could have been an hour
The way you stole my heart
You know you could have been a crook
    And baby your so smart
You know you could have been a school book

Well you could of been anything that you wanted to
    I can tell
The way you do the things you do

    Well you could of been

You make my life so rich
You know you could've been some money
    And baby you're so sweet
You know you could have been some honey

Well you could of been anything that you wanted to
    I can tell
The way you do the things you do

    Well you could of been

    As pretty as you are
You know you could've been a flower
    If good looks were minutes
You know you could have been an hour

You know you could have been a crook

  • Smokey Robinson wrote this after Berry Gordy asked his Motown writers to come up with something for The Temptations. He said that whoever wrote them a hit would get preferential treatment and the chance to write more songs for The Temptations, which Smokey did.
  • The Temptations previous 7 singles all flopped. There was a lot of pressure on Motown to deliver a hit.
  • Berry Gordy wrote his own song the be their next single, but he put it on the shelf when enough people at Motown told him that Smokey's song was better.
  • Bobby Rogers, who was a member of Smokey's group, The Miracles, helped him finish writing this.
  • This was the first song on the first Temptations album, which was a collection of their singles released in 1965. At the time, Motown focused on releasing hit singles, and album sales were secondary. Singles were more profitable because more people bought them.
  • UB40 covered this in 1990. Their version hit #6 in the US.
  • Otis Williams of The Temptations recalled in Mojo magazine February 2009: "The first time we heard the song, we loved it. The melody swung, and the lyrics had lots of charm. They were silly in a way, talking about a girl you loved as a candle, a handle, a schoolbook, a cool crook, a broom, a perfume, but, typical Smokey, he made it work. It got a good response whenever we did it live, so our hopes were up. We knew from past experience that even the best tracks don't always click."
  • Smokey Robinson told Mojo October 2014 that Curtis Mayfield was his inspiration for this tune. "He had a song out with The Impressions called 'It's Alright' and they sang with this great harmony and I knew The Temptations could sing like that because they had a great harmony sound," Smokey explained, "and Curtis had this high voice like Eddie Kendricks and I wanted to simulate that if possible."

    Never, Neverland Lyrics

"No not 'alison hell' part 2! yes, another gloomy subject! yet another true story! this is about an unfortunate young girl who was locked in a room for half a decade just for looking at a boy in a grocery store! her guardian, also her grandmother, felt that the only way she could protect her granddaughter from the 'evils and temptations' in the world was to confine her to her room 'till eternity.' there is, however, a rather happy end to all this when, during the middle of the song, the police/social workers storm the house and free the girl from her mental / physical captivity. she is now on the bright road to recovery whilst nanny finds her new home in the sanitarium. ps clare is a doll!"]

My room is full of toys and things
    But filled with nothing new
Just me and clare alone in this
    Enchanted, placid room
It's Saturday and no more school
    There hasn't been for years
    She says we're here forever
    Till eternity

    Our solitude has been disturbed
    Clare hold on, don't flee
With open arms they call my name
"Oh won't you come with me?"

    Get back, back!
    Just leave us all alone
    Take that and that!
    I'll break your every bone

    Get back, back!
    Just leave us all alone
    Take that and that!
    I'll break your every bone

    Blacking out, poisoned
    Colours now decay
    Drifting off to Never, Neverland
    Please don't take me away
    To never, neverland
    No, to the neverland

Time has passed and now I see
    What I've lived through
I've got no fears that match the hate
    That came from you
It's Saturday, I've things to do
I wish you all the best
Now I leave your placid room
    Enjoy eternal rest

  • Neverland is the magical place where you can find Tinker Bell and Peter Pan. This song is about a young girl who is confined to her room with just her doll (Clare) for company - a far cry from Neverland.

Annihilator guitarist Jeff Waters says the girl in the song is the same one from their 1989 song "Alison Hell," which tells the true story of a girl whose parents locked her in a room when she became frightened and delusional.

In our interview with Waters , he explained: "I just went into this weird trip in my head about what the girl would be doing now and getting into her mind: What she's seeing and what's going on in her world in the institution. I would have been a psychologist, I think, if I hadn't gotten into music."
  • Jeff Waters wrote this song in 1989 when Annihilator was touring as the opening act for the British metal band Onslaught. He wrote the song on the tour bus.
