Brixton Song Chart

This was penned by Benji Madden in Brixton, London, hence the title. He told The Official Charts website : "I wrote a handful of songs in London that I hated, but when I sent them to Joel he said he really liked it and we turned it into something great."

Brixton is a district of South London with a a multi-ethnic community. It was the site of race riots in 1981, after which the Government commissioned a public inquiry. Other references to Brixton in songs include:

"Barbados" by Typically Tropical (tells the story of a Brixton bus-driver who goes to the tropical island Barbados with 'Coconut Airways' to escape the rain of London).

"The Guns Of Brixton" by The Clash (written by the group's bass player Paul Simonon, who grew up in Brixton, this deals with law enforcement violence in his hometown).

"Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant (titled after the Electric Avenue shopping area in Brixton, which was one of the first streets in the UK to get electric lights).

"Brixton Briefcase" by Chase & Status (The title is the nickname for a ghetto blaster in the 1980s that people carried on their shoulders, walking around the street listening to music. It was synonymous with London).

"Uptight Downtown" by La Roux (About the grim reality of the 2011 London riots, which singer Elly Jackson observed in Brixton).

And we couldn't leave out the fact that David Bowie was born at 40 Stansfield Road, Brixton.

God Gave Me Everything Song Chart

Lenny Kravitz helped Jagger write and produce this, and also played guitar on the song. Kravitz often opened for The Rolling Stones.

This was the first single from Goddess In The Doorway, which was Jagger's first solo album since 1993. The Rolling Stones lead singer isn't known for spirituality, but on this track he's very explicit about his feelings toward God.

This was released to radio in November 2001, but it was released over the internet on October 23 so that it would be eligible for a Grammy the next year. It was one of the first songs sold via download, and it cost $3.49 through Liquid Audio, which was the first company to provide this technology (this was long before iTunes). Along with "Dig In" by Lenny Kravitz, it was the first Virgin Records single sold through download. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Jagger played a small club in Los Angeles a week before a documentary about his life called Being Mick aired on ABC. He performed this twice at the club so they could use the footage in the documentary, which aired on Thanksgiving, 2001.

As part of the promotion for Jagger's documentary, ABC played a video of this mixed with football clips during halftime of Monday Night Football.

The video was directed by Mark Romanek, who also did Kravitz' "Are You Gonna Go My Way." He had Kravitz and Jagger wear camera rigs attached to their bodies, which they walked around in to get footage. This technique can be seen in many movies, including Mean Streets and Requiem for a Dream.

When The Tigers Broke Free Song Chart

Roger Waters wrote this about his father, who died in World War II at Anzio, Italy in 1944. Roger was just five months old when his father was killed. The feeling of loss became a theme in Roger's songs, many of which dealt with military themes and the repercussions of war.

Released as a single in 1982, this song did not appear on an album until it was used on Pink Floyd's 2001 Greatest Hits compilation. It also appeared on the reissued version of The Final Cut in 2003.

This was used in Pink Floyd's movie The Wall. It appeared in the "Enemy Bridge Was Held" and "High Command" sections, when Pink sees his dad loading a gun and dusting his army uniform. (thanks, patrick - Chicago, IL)

Original Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett also lost his father, who died when he was 14. It may have contributed to the mental illness that forced him out of the band.

In this song, Roger Waters sings about finding a letter that "His Majesty signed with his own rubber stamp." Waters says that he was trying on his father's uniform when he found a condolence letter from George VI, which was indeed signed with a rubber stamp. He found the replica signature particularly disturbing, since his dad gave up his life for the country. He would have preferred an actual signature, even if it was simply on behalf of the King.

Numpty Song Chart

This self-critical Caustic Love track finds Nutini grappling with relationship issues. It borrows the melody from Lee Dorsey's 1965 hit "Working in the Coal Mine."

It's My Life Song Chart

This was Bon Jovi's first release since 1995. Jon Bon Jovi released a solo album in 1997, but this was the first release by the band in 5 years. It was the first single from the album.

The line "For Tommy and Gina, who never backed down," is a reference to their 1986 hit "Livin' On A Prayer," which featured Tommy and Gina as young people trying to get by in tough times.

The line "Like Frankie Said, I did it my way" is a reference to Frank Sinatra, who sang "My Way." Sinatra was from New Jersey, just like Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora used a talkbox to create the odd vocal effects. The device gave him a distinct stage presence, since he needed to place a tube in his mouth to use it. When Bon Jovi performed this on VH1 Storytellers, Sambora had one microphone for his talkbox and another for backing vocals. Their 1986 hit, "Livin' On A Prayer" also featured a talkbox. Peter Frampton builds all of Richie Sambora's talkboxes for him.

This was featured in a promo for ESPN's SportsCenter. In the spot, they talk about how well New Jersey sports teams are doing, them mention Bon Jovi's new album. At that point, Bon Jovi plays this in the middle of the newsroom.

Bon Jovi performed this at the 2001 "Concert For New York" to benefit victims of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Jon Bon Jovi also spoke at the show.

This is the title track of Professor Green's third album. The rapper came up with the record's name before his 2013 marriage to reality TV star Millie Mackintosh, which made him a fixture in the gossip columns. He told Digital Spy : "I had the title a couple of years ago and it was just quite jovial. It was more tongue in cheek than with an actual meaning but it's become something of a self-fulfilling prophecy hasn't it?"

"There's been a lot happening in the public eye in the last two years," he continued. Don't You (Forget About Me) Song Chart

This was featured in the 1985 movie The Breakfast Club. Directed by John Hughes, it featured many members of the "Brat Pack," including Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, and Judd Nelson. The song is so associated with The Breakfast Club, that it is often used in movies or TV shows any time they reference the movie, often with a parody of the iconic ending shot where Judd Nelson throws his fist in the air (perhaps the most famous freeze-frame in movie history, although Rocky 2, where Rocky and Apollo are frozen mid-punch, is also up there).

Examples include the TV shows Scrubs, Psych, 30 Rock and Family Guy, and the movies American Pie and Easy A. In the 2001 film Not Another Teen Movie, which even features a cameo by Molly Ringwald, the version in the movie was performed by Sprung Monkey.

Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff wrote this song specifically for The Breakfast Club. Forsey, who also co-wrote "Shakedown" for Beverly Hills Cop II and the title song to Flashdance... What a Feeling, was in charge of the music on The Breakfast Club. Schiff had been a guitarist in Nina Hagen's band and co-wrote one of her biggest songs, "New York / N.Y."

Forsey and Schiff wrote a few other songs for the film as well, including "Fire in the Twilight" by Wang Chung and "Didn't I Tell You" by Joyce Kennedy. "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was the only hit from the soundtrack, but it was a big one, rising to #1 in the US.

Simple Minds had been around for five years and developed a strong following in England when this was released. The song was much more bombastic and radio-friendly than their previous material, which alienated some of their core fans, but gave them a breakthrough hit in the US, where it was by far their biggest hit. It is one of the few Simple Minds songs that they didn't write themselves.

According to Keith Forsey, Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music was his first choice to record this song, but Ferry turned it down. Forsey was also a big fan of simple minds, so he tried to get them to record the song by delivering a cassette demo to the band.

At the time, Simple Minds was gaining traction in the UK, with with three modest hits from their 1984 album Sparkle in the Rain: "Waterfront," "Speed Your Love to Me" and "Up on the Catwalk." In the US, however, they had no luck, in large part because their US record company, A&M, didn't promote them. An A&R guy at the label named Jordan Harris tried to rectify that by having them record this song (The Breakfast Club soundtrack was on A&M), but the band wanted nothing to with it because:

1) They didn't like recording songs they didn't write.
2) Jim Kerr didn't like the lyric (especially the "vanity... insecurity" line).

So why did the band record it? They simply changed their minds. They met with The Breakfast Club director John Hughes and got a screening of the film, which put the lyric in better context. Forsey visited them in Scotland, and they got on well. While there, he convinced them to give it a go, and they recorded the track in a few hours at a studio in London.

Jim Kerr didn't think this song was up to snuff when he heard the demo, but looking back on it, he's thrilled with its impact on pop culture. "The song and the film are almost iconic to certain generations, especially in America," he told us in 2014 . "So it's great when things come together and work so well. It's been a pleasure to see how much joy that song gives to a lot of people.

This got a ridiculous amount of radio play, partly because it was played on both rock and Top 40 stations. It continues to get played on classic rock, modern rock, and even Top 40 radio stations as a solid recurrent with a huge recognition rating - when songs are tested by stations to determine if audiences like them, this consistently does very well, which keeps it on the air.

The prom scene in the 1986 John Hughes movie Pretty in Pink was shot to this song, which might explain why the dancing doesn't follow the music of the song that was used: "If You Leave" by OMD. Andy McCluskey of OMD told us: "The song had to be 120 BPM cos that's the tempo of 'Don't You Forget about Me,' which is the track they actually shot the prom scene to. Unfortunately, the editor obviously had no sense of rhythm because they are all dancing out of time in the final film."

The song's co-writer Keith Forsey took over as drummer for The Psychedelic Furs in 1984 and produced their album Mirror Moves that year. When John Hughes found out that Forsey wrote "Don't You (Forget About Me)," he delved deeper into The Psychedelic Furs and discovered the group's 1981 song "Pretty In Pink." He made that the title song to his next movie, which was released in 1986. This gave The Furs a huge career boost and a surprising hit.

Despite the band's then-popularity in the UK and Europe, back in 1985 Simple Minds remained essentially unknown in the United States. That changed when this song gave them a foothold; their next album, Once Upon a Time (which didn't include "Don't You (Forget About Me)"), scored with the #3 hit "Alive And Kicking." A few minor hits followed in America, but their stronghold remained the UK, where they topped the chart in 1989 with "Belfast Child."

Jim Kerr, the group's lead singer, was married to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders when this came out. He was later married to the actress Patsy Kensit, who divorced him and took up with Liam Gallagher of Oasis.

Molly Ringwald released an album of standards in 2013 called Except Sometimes, which featured a cover of this song. Ringwald wanted to pay tribute to John Hughes and integrate her past by covering the song.

Season 7 American Idol winner David Cook recorded a cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" as the farewell song for the 10th season of the reality television music competition. The song was chosen by American Idol creator and Executive Producer Simon Fuller and made available for sale on March 8, 2011. Cook told The Hollywood Reporter : "When I was approached about that song, my first thought was how iconic it is. Every time I hear that song I think of Judd Nelson on the football field with his fist in the air. How do you make it your own without completely bastardizing the original? It was an interesting experience. I'm extremely happy with the end result. It was a lot of fun to record. We got Kenny Aronoff on drums and Neal came in and helped cut some of the guitars. With Matt Squire's help - he was on board as a producer - we went in, had fun with it and tried not to worry about the inevitable pressure associated with that song. It was a huge honor."

The song's "la-la-la" coda is a case of a placeholder becoming the actual lyric, as neither Keith Forsey nor Jim Kerr could think of actual words that made sense.

The music video was directed by Daniel Kleinman, who also did the clips for Paula Abdul's "Knocked Out" and Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days." Oddly, there was no footage from The Breakfast Club in the video, which takes place in a large room filled with the band members and various television monitors. Simple Minds were never huge on MTV, which had moved away from British acts and were more interested in artists like Madonna and Prince. It was radio that made this song huge in the States.

Killer in the Streets Song Chart

This Pe'ahi track is about being deceived by an alluring girl. "The song moves you along like something you want blasting on the radio as you drive through the streets of L.A. on your way to meet with destiny," Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes told Billboard magazine. "I love the idea of heartbreak being something you become contaminated with, sick from. As they say, 'Hurt people, hurt people'... and if they don't hurt others they usually break themselves. Love is indeed a dangerous game but it is also the ONE thing we can all universally relate to."

The band's Sune Rose Wagner told Q magazine this is The Ravonettes' take on Sly & The Family Stone. "A hypnotic groove which builds to a climax and then dissolves until there are only drums and vocals left," he said.

The song's music video tells a tale of some killers on the loose and their converted victims. Sharin Foo features as "the beautiful blonde" and Sune Rose Wagner as the "converted heartbreaker." Director Rie Rasmussen commented to Billboard: "They inspire storytelling from the first guitar riff, such a hypnotic piece of music!"

In The Midnight Hour Song Chart

Pickett wrote this with Steve Cropper, who wrote and produced many of the soul classics for Stax Records. Cropper played guitar on the Stax session band, Booker T. and The MGs.

Cropper recalled to Uncut in 2015: "I say in my shows that playing the guitar is real simple, you just follow the dots - the dots on neck on every guitar are in the same place. That's how I came up with the intro for this. They go, It couldn't be that simple,' then all of them go home and get their guitars out and go, 'Wow, it is!'"

Cropper and Pickett wrote this at the Lorraine Motel, which was located near the Stax studios in Memphis. On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot there while standing on the balcony.

This was produced by Jerry Wexler with Booker T. & the MG's as the band. Booker T. and The MGs played on many Soul classics, and had a hit of their own with "Green Onions" in 1962.

Atlantic Records gave Pickett the nickname "The Wicked Pickett" after this was released. They used it to promote him, claiming he got it because of his prowess with the ladies. Pickett lived up to the nickname - he spent some time in jail and struggled with drug use before his death in 2006 at age 64.

This was Pickett's first hit. He went on to become a soul music legend and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Pickett also recorded "99 1/2" and "634-5789" at the Stax Studios, with backing by Booker T. and the MG's and the horns by the Bar-Kays.

When Pickett and Booker T and the MG's first tried to record the song, nobody liked the result - then Wexler had the idea to change the rhythm so that the teenagers could dance the jerk. In 1991, this was used in the movie The Commitments, which was about an Irish band who played the songs of American Soul singers. The movie helped introduce Pickett's music to a new audience.

Steve Cropper: "Wilson says he wrote the song but, you know, I listened to some old church stuff he sang on and he was singing 'See my Jesus in the midnight hour, see my Jesus in the midnight hour," over and over, and I said, 'I'm gonna see my girl in the midnight hour,' what about that?'"

Great Balls of Fire Song Chart

This energetic track is hymn to the spirit of The Script's Irish homeland. "We're not crying on the page," said guitarist Mark Sheehan with a grin, "and it's not super-emotional as a song. It's just about missing home and talking about what every emigrant around the world feels."

The song title is a play on words regarding the phrase "paint the town red," meaning to party or celebrate in a rowdy, wild manner. (Green is Ireland's national color).

The incident that sparked it off the phrase was when Henry Beresford, 3rd Marquess of Waterford and his fox-hunting friends went on a drunken spree with pots of red paint In the early hours of April 6, 1837. The location of the event has been located in both the Irish town of Waterford and the English town of Melton Mowbray.
