Why Can't I Be You? Song Chart

During live performances, The Cure often used this song to play around with and incorporate different songs into the performance. These other songs have included "The Lovecats," "Fly Me To The Moon," "Young At Heart," and "Out Of Touch," among others. (thanks, Richard - Alva, OK)

The video clip to this song cleverly included some risqué word play, turning "Can't" into "Cu-t." When the members of the band are symbolizing the words "Why Can't I Be You" as the letters Y _ I B U, by shaping their bodies into the shape of these letters, the word "Can't," which is the only word that could not be symbolized by a letter, was instead represented by a large mouth, or "Pair of lips" turned sideways (i.e. a vagina). Thus, 'Y c-nt I B U.' The original film clip is nowadays often replaced with the film clip of the remix to this song which doesn't include this part of the clip. (thanks, Anthony - Tokyo, Japan)

This was the lead single from the band's first and only double album. The record was their first to enter the Billboard Top 40.

In a 1987 interview with Les Inrockuptibles, songwriter Robert Smith said that the title "is not to be taken generally, on the contrary it comes from a particular situation; I was in the middle of a tense discussion and these people around the table were looking at me as if I was going to make some ground breaking revelations, and I thought to myself "good God, why can't I be elsewhere? Why isn't someone else in my place?" I would've traded with anyone; I would've preferred to be that guy leaning at the bar than myself."

Smith has also said that the song was written as a keepsake for a 1985 visit to his Peruvian sponsored child, Aurora.

Perfect Storm Song Chart

This mid-tempo country rocker finds Paisley singing about a girl that he equates to a thunderstorm:

As Paisley sings the word "storm," his electric guitar rumbles like a clap of thunder. He told Rolling Stone Country that it was his intention to marry the riff with the song's lyrical content: "The 'Perfect Storm' guitar part sounds like thunder," he said. "It's got that crackle. Sometimes, the guitars and the lyrics come about at the same time."

Paisley added that the guitar should always be compatible with the song. "I'm not one of those guys who's got a lot of riffs lying around," he said. "You get into trouble when you start talking your eye off of the song. You can have this riff that you think sounds so cool, but to whom? Are you speaking the language your fans want you to speak? You've got to picture that person as they're hearing the song for the first time. You don't get many tries in country music to hook 'em for the first time."

The Jim Shea-directed video features Paisley singing the ballad during a hurricane-like storm whilst photos of women slowly fly past the screen. Several weeks previously Paisley had asked fans for photos of themselves or someone special in a T-shirt. "Thanks so much for submitting your photos for the video," he said. "I stood in the pouring rain and sang this song over and over in slow motion for you. I hope you love it. I'm really happy with it. I love the video."

Amongst those whose pictures were chosen were his wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, whose photo appears in the clip. Paisley tweeted her at the time:

Last Dance Song Chart

This features a hidden lyric from another Cure track. The lyric, not included in the official lyrics, comes from the 1982 song "Cold," which originally appeared on the album Pornography. Lead singer Robert Smith whispers "your name like ice into my heart" before the last verse. (thanks, Richard - Alva, OK)

In a 1989 interview with Music Box TV, vocalist Robert Smith said the song was about "someone that you meet and you haven't seen for a long time. And you used to have very strong feelings for and you don't anymore, you suddenly realize... It's a horrible sensation."

The song was not included on original vinyl pressings of Disintergration and originally was included as a bonus track.

This song is about a dreamy day near the seashore with a loved one. Lead singer Robert Smith was brought up in the town of Crawley in Southeast England, which is about 40 miles from Beachy Head (a cliff and notorious suicide hotspot). (thanks, Wim - Brussels, Belgium)

According to Rolling Stone magazine, this was cut at a vineyard in the South of France, and is Robert Smith's favorite Cure song. The band's girlfriends hung out at the sessions, which influenced the music: "The girls would sit on the sofa in the back of the control room and give the songs marks out often," Smith said. "So there was a really big female input."

The version released as a single was remixed by Bob Clearmountain. He has worked with The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, among others.

The original demo of this song was titled "Shivers."

In the November, 2003 issue of Blender magazine, Robert Smith said: "In 1987, my wife, Mary, and I lived in a small two-bedroom flat in North London. The other room was my music room. Just about the only discipline I had in my life was self-imposed. I set myself a regimen of writing 15 days a month; otherwise I'd have just got up in mid-afternoon and watched TV until the pubs opened, then gone out drinking. I knew as soon as I'd written it that it was a good pop song. Although I didn't realize it at the time, the structure is very similar to 'Another Girl, Another Planet,' by The Only Ones, which I can still vividly remember hearing on the radio late at night in the mid-'70s. The main difference is that as the song progressed, I introduced some different chord changes, which give it that slightly melancholic feeling. The song is about hyperventilating - kissing and fainting to the floor. Mary dances with me in the video because she was the girl, so it had to be her. The idea is that one night like that is worth 1,000 hours of drudgery."

The first single from Cavalera Conspiracy's Pandemonium album are about the kamikaze suicide aircraft attacks by Japanese pilots during the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II. Max Cavalera explained to Loudwire : "This song is about the Japanese pilots and their fervor to commit suicide for their country."

'Kamikaze' is a Japanese word meaning 'divine wind.' it refers to the providential typhoons in 1274 and 1281, which baled Mongolian invasion fleets under Kublai Khan. During World War II, it was applied to the suicide aircraft attacks under Vice Admiral Onishi in the Pacific between October 1944 and January 1945. Around 3,860 kamikaze pilots gave their lives in attacks when their bomb-loaded fighters crashed into Allied naval vessels. It is estimated that about 19% of kamikaze attacks managed to hit a ship.

The Norwegian band A-Ha had a 1988 UK Top 40 hit with "The Blood That Moves the Body," which was about the Japanese kamikaze attacks.

Many of Captain & Tennille's hits, including their other chart-topper "Love Will Keep Us Together," were written by the team of Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka. "Do That to Me One More Time," however, was written by Toni Tennille. She also wrote the duo's sexually charged 1974 hit "The Way I Want To Touch You."

Daryl Dragon (The Captain) and Toni Tennille were such a wholesome couple that they had their own variety show on ABC from 1976-1977. In this song, however, Tennille is clearly singing about foreplay, although ambiguously enough to keep the censors at bay.

The song was a huge hit, reaching #1 US in February 1980. The following year, another wholesome singer took a lascivious turn when Olivia Newton-John went to #1 with "Physical."

Captain & Tennille left their longtime label A&M and signed with Casablanca for the Make Your Move album. Toni Tennille didn't think much of this song when she wrote it, but when she played it for Casablanca head Neil Bogart, he heard the hit potential right away and insisted that they record it.

This was featured in a 2001 TV commercial for Sprint PCS cellular service. In the spot, Captain & Tennille sing this on a football field while a team is practicing. We learn that an assistant, who was not using Sprint PCS, misheard "The coach wants a backup for O'Neil" as "The coach wants The Captain and Tennille."

Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg Song Chart

This was the first Top 40 hit for TLC. It introduced the group and explained who represented each letter: Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas.

This contains samples of "Escape-ism" (James Brown), "Jungle Boogie" (Kool & the Gang), "School Boy Crush" (AWB), "Fly Robin Fly" (Silver Convention), and "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" (Bob James).

The video made sure to introduce each singer. When each girl sang her part, her name flashed on the screen. Like many of their songs, T-Boz sang the lyrics, Left Eye did the rap, and Chilli sang on the chorus.

This is about sex. They made it clear, however, that they advocated safe sex, by prominently displaying condoms. Lopes wore one over her left eye in their early days.

This is not the same song as the Temptations classic of the same name. In that song, a man swallows his pride and begs his girl to come back to him. In this, the girls state that they are not afraid to ask a man for sex.

It took a long time for radio stations to figure out what this song was about, but when they did, a lot of them censored the line, "Two inches or a yard, rock hard or if it's sagging - I ain't too proud to beg." The line was part of Left Eye's rap.

The Ooooooohhh...On the TLC Tip album sold over 3 million copies. Their next one sold 5 million, but TLC still managed to go broke and had to file for bankruptcy in 1995. Their contract paid them only 7% of revenue from album sales, which wasn't enough to cover their expenses when split three ways.

On August 9, 2014, an unarmed 18-year-old black youth, Michael Brown, and his friend, Dorian Johnson, were walking on the 2900 block of Canfield Drive in Ferguson, Missouri. A white policeman, Darren Wilson, ordered the pair to move off the street and onto the pavement. An altercation took place and Wilson fired six shots at Brown, fatally wounding him. The tragedy prompted a series of stand-offs between activists, Ferguson locals and cops as well as much coverage and debate in the United States media.

The Game penned this protest song dedicated to Michael Brown, in the wake of the shooting. He was joined by Diddy, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Diddy, Fabolous, Wale, DJ Khaled, Swizz Beatz, Yo Gotti, Curren$y, Problem, King Pharaoh and the R&B super-group TGT (Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank). "The issues in Ferguson really hit home for me, and I feel compelled to use my musical platform to address this," Game told Rolling Stone. "I am a black man with kids of my own that I love more than anything, and I cannot fathom a horrific tragedy like Michael Brown's happening to them. This possibility has shaken me to my core. That is why this song must be made and why it was so easy for so many of my friends to come together and unite against the injustice."

All the proceeds from sales of the song went to the Michael Brown Memorial Fund.
