Never Been In Love Song Chart
  • This song finds Cobra Starship being assisted by the two Swedish ladies of Icona Pop. "Cobra's always been a vehicle for me to collaborate with lots of people and experiment with different things," frontman Gabe Saporta explained to Billboard magazine.

Cobra Starship first worked with Icona Pop on one of the many remixes of their hit tune "I Love It." The Swedish duo liked it so much that they used it in their live show.
  • Gabe Saporta penned this relationship-affirming song with John Ryan, who has also contributed to the writing of several One Direction hit singles and Ricky "Wallpaper" Reed, the producer of Jason DeRulo's "Wiggle."

Ryan and Wallpaper also collaborated with Pitbull on the Cuban-American rapper's "Fireball" hit tune.
  • The song samples the piano from Fatboy Slim's 1999 hit single "Praise You." "We wanted to find something that people would be familiar with," Saporta told Entertainment Weekly, "but it's been so long that it almost feels new again."
  • Gabe Saporta was born in Montevideo, Uruguay before immigrating to the USA with his family when he was four. This single was released on August 25th, which happens to be Uruguay's independence day.

    All Shook Up Lyrics

    A well'a bless my soul
    What'sa wrong with me?
I'm itchin' like a man in a fuzzy tree
My friends say I'm actin' wild as a bug
    I'm in love
    I'm All Shook Up
Mm mm mm, mm, yay, yay, yay

Well, my hands are shaky and my knees are weak
I can't seem to stand on my own two feet
Who do you think of when you have such luck?
    I'm in love
    I'm all shook up
Mm mm mm, mm, yay, yay, yay

Well, please don't ask me what'sa on my mind
I'm a little mixed up, but I'm feelin' fine
When I'm near that girl that I love best
My heart beats so it scares me to death!

Well she touched my hand what a chill I got
Her lips are like a volcano when it's hot
I'm proud to say that she's my buttercup
    I'm in love
    I'm all shook up
Mm mm mm, mm, yay, yay, yay

My tongue gets tied when I try to speak
My insides shake like a leaf on a tree
There's only one cure for this body of mine
That's to have that girl that I love so fine!

She touched my hand what a chill I got
Her lips are like a volcano that's hot
I'm proud to say that she's my buttercup
    I'm in love
    I'm all shook up
Mm mm mm, mm, yay, yay, yay
Mm mm mm, mm, yay, yay

  • This was Presley's second-biggest hit in the US (after "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound Dog"), spending eight weeks atop Billboard's Top 100 Singles chart and a ninth week at #1 on the Jukebox chart.
  • Songwriter Otis Blackwell wrote this on a dare. One of the owners of Shalimar Music (Blackwell's publishing company) wandered into Blackwell's office as he was struggling to create a follow-up to "Don't Be Cruel." As Al Stanton approached Blackwell, Stanton was shaking a bottle of Pepsi. Stanton said to Blackwell, "I've got an idea. Why don't you write a song called 'All Shook Up'?" According to Blackwell, the song was finished in a couple of days.
  • Although Blackwell is the sole composer, Presley shared the songwriting credit, as demanded by Colonel Tom Parker. The same thing happened with "Don't Be Cruel."
  • Billboard declared this the #1 single of 1957. "Don't Be Cruel" was #1 for 1956, the only time in the history of Billboard that the same artist recorded the #1 hit singles of two consecutive calendar years.
  • When this song was released, Presley was in the midst of an incredible hot streak. He had the #1 single for 25 weeks in 1956: "Heartbreak Hotel" (8 weeks), "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" (1), "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" (11 weeks, both sides alternating at #1), "Love Me Tender" (5). He spent 25 more weeks at #1 in 1957 with: "Too Much" (3 weeks), "All Shook Up" (8), "Teddy Bear" (7), "Jailhouse Rock" (7).
  • This song was the basis for a musical called All Shook Up that opened on Broadway in 2005. The production featured various Elvis Presley songs amidst a plot line based on the Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night.
  • In 2009 The Performing Rights Society announced this as the most ever played Elvis song in public places in the UK.

  • Drums frontman Jonny Pierce explained the song's meaning: "I've never had much of a drive to build an empire or much less a retirement fund, simply because it's a lot of shuffling about for nothing," he said. "In the end it's all for nothing. Some days this hopelessness chains me to my bed."

"But, there are other days where I find myself almost blissful because if there is no point, then there are no rules and you can be whatever and whoever you want to be," Pierce continued. "It's maybe the only true hope one can cling to (if you're serious) and you can only find it deep in the folds of Utter Hopelessness. That, my friends, is what 'I Can't Pretend' is about. No rules - get to it. Love who you want! Do what you want!"
  • The song's music video finds The Drums performing in several locations including an aquarium, a ballroom full of balloons and a front lawn. The clip was directed by the BRTHR team (Iggy Azalea's "Bounce," Foster The People's "Coming of Age.") Jonny Pierce said of the promo: "Anyone who has ever worked with us knows that Jacob and I are control freaks when it comes to our visuals and so we were pleasantly surprised to find the trustworthy duo BRTHR. It was the first time we completely let go and let someone else take the reins on a music video. They have exquisite taste and brought the magic of nature to the forefront - an important pillar of the song."

    Cherish Lyrics

Cherish is the word I use to describe
All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside
You don't know how many times I've wished that I had told you
You don't know how many times I've wished that I could hold you
You don't know how many times I've wished that I could
Mold you into someone who could
Cherish me as much as I cherish you

Perish is the word that more than applies
To the hope in my heart each time I realize
That I am not gonna be the one to share your dreams
That I am not gonna be the one to share your schemes
That I am not gonna be the one to share what
Seems to be the life that you could
Cherish as much as I do yours

Oh I'm beginning to think that man has never found
The words that could make you want me
That have the right amount of letters, just the right sound
That could make you hear, make you see
That you are drivin' me out of my mind

Oh I could say I need you but then you'd realize
That I want you just like a thousand other guys
Who'd say they loved you With all the rest of their lies
When all they wanted was to touch your face, your hands
    And gaze into your eyes

Cherish is the word I use to describe
All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside
You don't know how many times I've wished that I had told you
You don't know how many times I've wished that I could hold you
You don't know how many times I've wished that I could
Mold you into someone who could
Cherish me as much as I cherish you

    And I do cherish you
    And I do cherish you

    Cherish is the word

    Cherish Song Chart
  • Despite the title, you don't want to play this song at your wedding. While the singer does cherish the girl, he knows that he can't possibly have her, and comes off a little desperate and obsessive. A far better choice is "Never My Love," which the group released a year later. That one finds our hero declaring his never-ending love.
  • This was the followup to The Association's first hit "Along Comes Mary." The Association was popular in the Los Angeles area, but gained national fame when this was released.
  • The Association's multi-instrumentalist Terry Kirkman wrote this in a half hour and incorporated it into their live act. Mike Whelan, who was in an earlier band with members of The Association, liked the song so much that he persuaded his new group, The New Christy Minstrels, to perform it as well. The Minstrels almost released it as a single before The Association.
  • Curt Boettcher produced this in a garage that was converted into a studio by Gary Paxton (of "Alley Oop" fame), but the recording has only two Association members on their instruments, the rest simply sang vocals. Boettcher used session musicians to play the other instruments.
  • Originally, this was 3:25 long. In an effort to encourage radio play, it was sped up and trimmed to 3:13, then listed on the label as 3:00 to appease stations refusing to play songs longer than 3 minutes.
  • In 1971, this was a #9 US hit for David Cassidy, who played Keith Partridge on The Partridge Family. It was his first hit, and he soon became a teen idol and star of the show.
  • The music licensing organization BMI ranked "Cherish" at #22 on their list of the most-played songs on television and radio of the 20th century in America. Another Association song, "Never My Love," came in at #2.
  • When Terry Kirkman wrote this song, he envisioned it with a far different arrangement. He wanted to record in a far slower tempo to wring out the emotion in the song - similar to how The Righteous Brothers performed "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'."

The Association's next #1, "Windy," was a similar story. That song was written as more of a folk-blues tune, but the group recorded it in a faster tempo, gilded it with slick production, and turned it into a huge hit.

    Guts Over Fear Lyrics

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
    Fuck am I gonna do?
It's too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

Sometimes I feel like all I ever do is
Find different ways to word the same, old song
    Ever since I came along
From the day the song called ‘’Hi! My Name Is’’ dropped
Started thinking my name was fault
    'Cause anytime things went wrong
I was the one who they would blame it on
The media made me the equivalent of a modern-day Genghis Khan
Tried to argue it was only entertainment, dawg
    Gangsta? Naw, courageous balls
Had to change my style, they said I'm way too soft
And I sound like AZ and Nas, out came the claws
And the fangs been out since then
But up until the instant that I’ve been against it
It was ingrained in me that I wouldn’t amount to a shitstain I thought
No wonder I had to unlearn everything my brain was taught
Do I really belong in this game? I pondered
I just wanna play my part, should I make waves or not?
So back and forth in my brain the tug of war wages on
And I don’t wanna seem ungrateful or disrespect the artform I was raised upon
But sometimes you gotta take a loss
And have people rub it in your face before you get made pissed off
And keep pluggin’, it’s your only outlet
And your only outfit so you know they gonna talk about it
Better find a way to counter it quick and make it, ah
Feel like I’ve already said this a kabillion eighty times
How many times can I say the same thing different ways that rhyme?
What I really wanna say is, is there anyone else that can relate to my story?
Bet you feel the same way I felt when I was in the same place you are

    I was afraid to
    Make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
    Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man's power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run
Guts Over Fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down
(Now I got) Guts over fear, guts over fear

Feels like a close, it’s coming to
    Fuck am I gonna do?
It's too late to start over
This is the only thing I, thing I know

I know what it was like, I was there once, single parents
Hate your appearance, did you struggle to find your place in this world?
And the pain spawns all the anger on
But it wasn’t until I put the pain in songs learned who to aim it on
That I made a spark, started to spit hard as shit
Learned how to harness it while the reins were off
And there was a lot of bizarre shit, but the crazy part
Was soon as I stopped saying "I gave a fuck"
Haters started to appreciate my art
And it just breaks my heart to look at all the pain I’ve caused
But what am I gonna do when the rage is gone?
And the lights go out in the trailer park?
And the window that was closing and there’s nowhere else I can go with flows in
And I’m frozen cause there’s no more emotion for me to pull from
Just a bunch of playful songs that I made for fun
So to the break of dawn here I go recycling the same, old song
But I’d rather make “Not Afraid 2† than making another mothafuckin’ “We Made You† uh
Now I don’t wanna seem indulgent when I discuss my lows and my highs
My demise and my uprise, pray to God
I just opened enough eyes later on
Gave you the supplies and the tools to hopefully use it to make you strong
And enough to lift yourself up when you feel like I felt
'Cause I can’t explain to y’all how dang exhausted my legs felt
Just having to balance my damn self
But on eggshells I was made to walk
But thank you, ma, ‘cause that gave me the
Strength to cause Shady-mania, so many empty that stadium
At least I made it out of that house and a found a place in this world when the day was done
So this is for every kid who all’s they ever did was dreamt that one day just getting accepted
I represent him or her, anyone similar, you are the reason that I made this song
Everything you're scared to say don't be afraid to say no more
From this day on forward, just let them a-holes talk
Take it with a grain of salt and eat their fucking faces off
The legend of the angry blonde lives on through you when I’m gone
And to think I was gone

    I was afraid to
    Make a single sound
Afraid I will never find a way out, out, out
    Afraid I never before
I didn’t wanna go another round
An angry man's power will shut you up
Trip wires fill this house with tip-toe love
Run out of excuses with every word
So here I am and I will not run
Guts over fear, (The time is here)
Guts over fear, (I shall not tear)
For all the times I let you push me around
And let you keep me down

  • Eminem wrote this uplifting, anthemic song for the closing credits song of The Equalizer, the big screen re-imagining of the late 1980s TV show. It finds Em reflecting on his own career as he hopes how his story of overcoming a difficult childhood will continue to inspire others.

So this is for every kid who all they ever did was dreamt of one day just getting accepted
I represent him or her, anyone similar, you are the reason that I made this song.
  • The song features Sia. The Australian singer-songwriter previously worked with Eminem on The Marshall Mathers LP 2 bonus track, "Beautiful Pain."
  • The beat was supplied by Emile Haynie, the producer of Eminem's 2010 Recovery album.
  • The video was filmed in Detroit and directed by Eninem's frequent collaborator Syndrome. The clip is an against-all-odds narrative about a working class man overcoming personal hurdles to become a professional boxer. It stars Alexander Wraith (Sex and the City 2, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) as the down-on-his-luck guy, and we also see former America's Next Top Model contestant, Winnie Harlow, lip-synching Sia's hook. Godzilla and Sopranos actor Al Sapienza also features in the modern day Rocky story as an overbearing father.
  • This song is featured in a 2014 commercial for the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. The spot shows a boxer in training underscoring the message of the song: triumph through struggle. How that applies to cars, we're not sure.

    If Not For You Lyrics

If Not For You, babe I couldn't even find the door
I couldn't even see the floor
I'd be sad and blue, if not for you

If not for you, babe, the night would see me wide awake
The day would surely have to break
It would not be new, if not for you

If not for you, my sky would fall, rain would gather too
Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, I'd be lost, if not for you

If not for you, the winter would hold no spring
    Couldn't hear a robin sing
I just wouldn't have a clue, if not for you

    If not for you
    My sky would fall
    Rain would gather too
Without your love I’d be nowhere at all

  • Bob Dylan wrote this song and recorded it in 1970 on his New Morning album. Ron Cornelius is a producer, songwriter and publisher who has played on albums by Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Loudon Wainwright III and many others. He told us about the Nashville sessions that produced the album:
"I always wanted to cut an album with him not as an ongoing thing, just saddle up with 5 or 6 guys, go for what you know right on the spot, and it was a series of sessions known as The New Morning Sessions that my wish came true. Dylan played his own acoustic guitar and sang, we had Charlie Daniels on bass and Al Kooper on keys and Russ Konkel on drums and me playing lead guitar. It was just a handful of guys going for what we know. He did something in those sessions that in all my work I've never seen anybody do - he would say 'OK, here's the song that we're going to do,' and he would go ahead and sing it down for us. While he's singing it down for you, you need to chart the song so at least you know the lay of the land. He'd say 'Has everybody got it, need me to play it again?,' then he'd say 'Let's cut it once and see what happens.' Well, as soon as the red lights come on to record, he'd take off playing the song in a completely different tempo than he had just played it. Everybody now is really off base, and you have to just go for what you know. If you'd get 3/4 of the way though it and it fell apart and we had to stop and do it again, we'd go back and red light the song, this time - completely different tempo. I mean way off, drastic changes. Not just fast or slow, he might flip into a Reggae type feel or something. If anybody fell off bad enough to stop that one, he'd say 'let's try it one more time.' The third time he'd take off in a completely different area. I know he was doing that to keep you off base, so that you had to be able to accommodate what was in front of you right now for the first time. If anybody fell off that time bad enough to stop the song, he'd say 'Next Song.' We cut for 21 days doing that and New Morning came out of those sessions. For a session player that was very weird because you're used to somebody singing their song, and you grasp what they're doing and hopefully everybody in the room does, and you get a magical take of it, and if you don't you try it again until everybody feels 'there it is.' Then you can move on to the next song.
  • This was Olivia Newton-John's first major hit on an international scale, and put her on the map in the all-important United States market for the first time, where the song went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Newton-John herself disliked the song and resisted recording it, doing so only grudgingly at the urging of her managers and fiancé. (thanks, Mike - Santa Barbara, CA)
  • Newton-John had her dog in the recording booth with her and at one point during the session he got up and knocked over a music stand. The sound can still be heard in the recording today, just after the instrumental bridge. (thanks, James - Minneapolis, MN)
  • George Harrison recorded this in 1970 for All Things Must Pass, his first solo album after The Beatles broke up. It was a triple album made up mostly of songs Harrison wrote as a member of The Beatles but were not recorded by the group. The first track on the album was "I'd Have You Anytime," which Harrison wrote with Dylan in 1968. This was the only song on All Things Must Pass that Harrison didn't write.
  • Olivia Newton John's songwriter John Farrar suggested that she cover this Bob Dylan song for her first UK release. Olivia said in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "I wasn't keen on that song at all, but I'm so glad John chose it because it's not one that I would have picked. I didn't think I sang it well, so when it was a hit you know I had to really say it was my management, and Bruce Welch and John Farrar who produced it, that were really the ones that thought that was a good record for me cause in those days I loved singing those big dramatic ballads, you know, talk about being sentimental." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

Made my way to the borderline
Lookin' up toward the friendly skies
Everything that I thought I had,
    Taken right before my eyes.
    Oh yeah

Give me faith, give me love, 'cause I need it!
Show me grace, make me strong, let me feel it!

Where to go, can I walk to redemption.

Don't know how I'll be okay,
    But I'll Find a Way.
    Said I'll find a way

Don't know. how I'll be okay,
    But I'll find a way

Do you remember, that when we used to play?
Do you remember, when you put me in my place?
Do you remember, when you told me I should go?
And I left you fighting all alone?

I see the writings on the walls
I feel it coming. yes I do
    Us together like before
    I don't know how we'll be okay
    But I'll find a way.

No matter way, no matter way,
I am gonna see any way
I am gonna see any way
To lord your boar to lord your terror I pray
To lord your boar to lord your terror I pray

    'Cause I'v waited finally shout,
To open up my mouth and let the truth come out
Yes I'll say it without a doubt

Don't know. how I'll be okay,
    But I'll find a way

(Say!) I will find a way
(Say!) I will find a way
(Say!) I will find a way

(Oh!) I will find a way
(Oh!) I will find a way
(Whoow!) I will find a way

    I will find a way

(Say!) I will find a way

    Windy Song Chart
  • This was written by Ruthann Friedman, who was singer/songwriter entrenched in the San Francisco and Los Angeles music scene in the '60s. She became friends with Beach Boys lyricist Van Dyke Parks , who introduced her to The Association, who were the first to record the song. They turned "Windy" into a girl.
  • Although Ruthann Friedman won't reveal the identity of "Windy," she tells us that he was another singer/songwriter, and not "a freewheeling Haight Ashbury Hippy" as often reported. Friedman says of the song: "I have heard so many different permutations of what the song was about. Here is the TRUTH. I was sitting on my bed - the apartment on the first floor of David Crosby's house in Beverly Glenn - and there was a fellow who came to visit and was sitting there staring at me as if he was going to suck the life out of me. So I started to fantasize about what kind of a guy I would like to be with, and that was Windy - a guy (fantasy). The song took about 20 minutes to write."
  • Bones Howe produced this song, making significant changes to Ruthann Friedman's demo to give the song more pop appeal. The song was written in waltz time, but Howe changed it to a standard 4/4 beat. He also opened the song with the bassline, added the recorder solo, and had the group sing the "ba-ba-ba-ba-ba" backing vocals.

The song became Howe's first #1 as a producer. He would top the chart again with two more productions: "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and "Wedding Bell Blues," both recorded by The 5th Dimension.
  • This was The Association's second #1 hit. Their first was "Cherish," recorded the previous year.

After "Windy"'s run at #1 on the Hot 100, "Never My Love" almost matched the feat in late 1967, peaking at #2 on the singles chart (it did hit #1 on "Cashbox"). "Never My Love" was composed by Don and Dick Addrisi, The Addrisi Brothers of "We've Got to Get It On" and "Slow Dancin' Don't Turn Me On" fame.
  • Association guitarists Larry Ramos and Russ Giguere shared lead vocals on this song. It wasn't easy - the session started in early afternoon and ended at 6:30 the next morning (they had to catch an 8:30 a.m. flight to perform in Virginia). Their voices were so burned out that Bones Howe had everybody in the studio singing on the ending of the song.
  • The song's composer Ruthann Friedman was 25 years old when she wrote this song. She had written at least 100 songs, but hadn't placed one with a major artist. When The Association turned "Windy" into a massive hit, it gave her both rent money and validation. Her mother pegged her as a secretary, and made her take a course hoping she would go that route. Instead, she left her family behind in the Bronx and headed for California to make music.

"I was more of a beatnik than a hippie," she told us. "I was too old to be a hippie. I was the black sheep in my family, the one who was immediately influenced by Bob Dylan and Timothy Leary. So for me it was a moment to look at my family and say, 'Na na na na na na.'"

Friedman released a solo album in 1969 called Constant Companion, it didn't include "Windy," since she didn't want to be known just for that song, especially since the hit version was such a departure from her original. She did play the song at her shows, but did it as more of a Blues number and never included the "ba-ba" vocals, which she hated. Music remained a part of her life into the '10s, when she could still be seen performing around Los Angeles. She plays "Windy" because the crowd wants to hear it. "It's a very important song. People love it," she said. "People love me because I wrote that song."
  • This is a rare hit song with a recorder solo, with was played by group member Terry Kirkman. It comes in about 1:07 into the song.
  • In our 2014 interview with Ruthann Friedman , she said that she later came to understand the true meaning of the song. Said Friedman: "These days, looking back at myself in my mid to late 20s, I finally realized I was talking about me in that song, and how I wanted to be."
  • Top session musicians - the same folks who played on songs by Simon And Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys - played on most early tracks for The Association. "Windy" was recorded in a few different sessions helmed by producer Bones Howe, so it's hard to determine who played on the final version, but musicians who played at these sessions include Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn on bass, Ray Pohlman on guitar and Larry Knechtel on keyboards.
  • This was one of the first Hot 100 chart-toppers composed entirely by a female songwriter. In 1960, Ricky Nelson brought "Poor Little Fool," written by Sharon Sheeley, to the top spot, and in 1963 The Singing Nun (Sister Luc-Gabrielle) had a #1 that she wrote herself called "Dominique." "Windy" came next on the list, and was followed a month later by another: "Ode To Billie Joe," written and performed by Bobbie Gentry.
  • On an episode of The Drew Carey Show entitled "Drew and Katie Become Friends," Nigel Wick plays this on his harp and sings it (Drew and Steve Carey eventually join in). The song was followed by wild applause. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

    Up in the Sky Lyrics

Hey you! Up in the Sky
    Learning to fly
    Tell me how high
    Do you think you'll go

    Before you start falling
Hey you! Up in a tree
    You wanna be me
    But that couldn't be

'Cause the people here they don't hear you calling
    How does it feel
    When you're inside me?

    Hey you! wearing the crown
    Making no sound
    I heard you feel down
    Well that's too bad

    Welcome to my world
    Hey you! Stealing the light
    I heard that the shine's
    Gone out of your life.

    Well that's just too bad
    Welcome to my world

You'll need assistance with the things that you have never ever seen
It's just a case of never breathing out
    Before you've breathed it in
    How does it feel
    When you're inside me?

Hey you! Up in the sky
    Learning to fly
    Tell me how high
    Do you think you'll go

    Before you start falling
Hey you! Up in a tree

  • Noel Gallagher explained that song's meaning to Melody Maker: "It's basically about people who think they're the voice of a generation, or the figurehead of a movement. It's just saying, 'Why are you lot down here looking up at him?' This band is about the music; it's about the songs. It's not about us."

"I wouldn't ever make a political speech, and I'd sack anyone in a band who started doing that," Gallagher continued. "We are overtly political once every five years, when we all go out and vote Labour. But then we turn around and go back to being a band again."

Blame It On The Bossa Nova Lyrics

I was at a dance when he caught my eye
Standin' all alone lookin' sad and shy
We began to dance, swaying' to and fro
And soon I knew I'd never let him go

Blame It On The Bossa Nova with its magic spell
Blame it on the bossa nova that he did so well
Oh, it all began with just one little dance
But then it ended up a big romance
Blame it on the bossa nova
    The dance of love

    (Now was it the moon?)
    No, no, the bossa nova
    (Or the stars above?)
    No, no, the bossa nova
    (Now was it the tune?)
    Yeah, yeah, the bossa nova
    (The dance of love)

Now I'm glad to say I'm his bride to be
And we're gonna raise a family
And when our kids ask how it came about
I'm gonna say to them without a doubt

Blame it on the bossa nova with its magic spell
Blame it on the bossa nova that he did so well
Oh, it all began with just one little dance
But then it ended up a big romance

Blame It On The Bossa Nova Song Chart
  • This was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, a husband and wife songwriting team. They also wrote "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'."
  • After she graduated from high school, Eydie worked as a Spanish interpreter by day, attended night classes at City College in New York City, and sang from time to time for a local band. She became a solo singer in 1952 after singing for Tommy Tucker's and Tex Beneke's big bands. In 1953, she became a regular performer on Steve Allen's Tonight Show, where she met her husband-to-be, singer Steve Lawrence. They married December 29, 1957, the week her hit "Love Me Forever" reached the Top 40.
  • In 1958, Steve and Eydie had their own summer replacement TV show: Steve Allen Presents The Steve Lawrence-Eydie Gorme Show. Eydie had another Top 40 hit that year with "You Need Hands."
  • After Lawrence was drafted in the fall of 1958 and Jack Paar replaced Steve Allen as host of The Tonight Show, Eydie stepped out of the spotlight for almost two years (Lawrence was not so "hidden" during his army days - he had the #9 hit "Pretty Blue Eyes" and #7 "Footsteps" released by ABC-Paramount as he was the official vocalist of the United States Army Band). After Lawrence left the army in 1960, he and Eydie became a popular nightclub act. Eventually the two of them signed with Columbia Records.
  • Eydie finally reached the Top 10 in 1963 with this. It was her last Top 40 solo hit.
  • The first single Eydie released on Columbia Records. For both Steve and Eydie, their first Columbia singles were their biggest hits... and their last Top 10 records. Before the end of 1962, Steve hit #1 with "Go Away Little Girl," a Gerry Goffin/Carole King song that Donny Osmond would take to #1 again a decade later.
  • Steve and Eydie finally scored on the charts as a duo with "I Want to Stay Here" and "I Can't Stop Talking About You," but only after Lawrence's last Top 40 Hits (in 1963), "Don't Be Afraid, Little Darlin'," "Poor Little Rich Girl," and "Walking Proud." Although the British Invasion cost them success in the recording industry, Steve and Eydie have remained a popular nightclub act for four decades.
  • In 1979, Steve and Eydie recorded as Parker and Penny. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

    Cusp of Eternity Lyrics

A child of autumn was born
Into a world of deceit and death
    And a land of ice
A break of bonds would take her away
And install a sense of loss and eternal sorrow

    She walks across the country
She holds her head up high in the rain
A mother is screaming for help
And she turns around to stare
At a scene from her memory

She is hiding a wish in her heart
That flows through her blood always
And it's culled from a dream
That someone is waiting to say her name
And call her to his side at the Cusp of Eternity

  • This was released as the first single from Pale Communion. Asked by Rocksverige why this song was chosen to lead the set, Opeth frontman Mikael Å kerfeldt replied: "That's the label's decision, basically. They wanted some type of promotional track, so they picked that song. I guess it's the most straightforward type of rocking song on the record, I think. And it was fine with us."

"Me personally, I don't care what songs they're gonna promote as the single, so I was fine with that."

    One Lyrics

    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me

Back to the world that's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gOne, I'm just one
    Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, help me

    Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell

    Landmine has taken my sight
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

    One Song Chart
  • This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "Its Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again. (thanks, Paul - Anacortes, WA)
  • The lyrics are based on the novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."

James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band. (thanks Vesa - Tampere, Finland and Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie which was directed by Trumbo. The video for the song uses images and monologues from that movie.
  • This was the first single released by the band to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who continued playing with Metallica until 2001. You have to listen very carefully to hear his playing, however, since the bass was buried in the mix.

In our 2013 interview with Jason Newsted , we asked him if he would like to see the album re-released with a more prominent low end. He replied: "There's been so much hubbub over this thing and people make so much out of it, but whatever it is that they make out of the blend of the whole thing, to me the album is perfect. Kill 'Em All isn't perfect, but it's perfect. And Van Halen I isn't perfect, but it's perfect. ...And Justice For All isn't perfect, but it's perfect. Because it captured that time for those people. Going back and re-recording albums that were already classics, I'm just not sure about all that stuff."
  • Metallica performed this at the Grammy awards in 1989. This was the first year a Grammy was awarded for Hard Rock/Metal Performance, and it went to Jethro Tull. This was a bit of a joke, since few people consider Jethro Tull to be Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. The next year, this won the award for Best Metal Performance and the year after, Metallica won again for "Stone Cold Crazy."

In 2014, Metallica once again performed "One" at the Grammy Awards, this time joined by the Chinese piano player Lang Lang.
  • Metallica guitarist James Hetfield wrote this with drummer Lars Ulrich. It is a fixture at their live shows.
  • This was included on the 1999 live album S&M, which they recorded with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
  • KoRn performed this on MTV Icon in 2003. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 3)
  • The name of the statue with the scales on the album cover is "Doris." (thanks, Ali Sadeghi - Scottsdale, AZ)
  • Hetfield has said he lifted the intro from Venom's "Buried Alive," a song about being trapped in a casket while being buried alive, similar to the predicament of the character in this song. (thanks, Michael - North Adams, MA)
  • This was the first video Metallica made, and it expanded their fan base by giving them a presence on MTV. Many fans got mad at Metallica for selling out, but the band said it felt right. (thanks, Josh - East Longmeadow, MA)
  • Hammett told Kerrang! September 13, 2008 that this track has one of his favorite Metallica guitar solos. He explained: "Specifically, this is the middle solo of the song. Much like 'Enter Sandman' it's a solo that everybody can pretty much sing along to, and it definitely gives me a really good feeling every time I play it."
  • This song is featured in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and is considered the second hardest song on the game. (thanks, matt - Langhorne, PA)
  • When Metallica appeared on The Howard Stern Show in September, 2013, James Hetfield explained that this was not so much an anti-war song as an observation. "War is a part of man," he explained. "We're just writing about it. It's not good or bad, it's just a thing."

Hetfield also revealed that he could relate to the character in the song because of his difficult childhood. He said that he often felt like a "prisoner in his own body," with no means to escape. His father left when he was 13, and his mother died a few years later.
