  • This song originally came to vocalist Ben Romans-Hopcraft in a dream when it was performed by an incarnation of American rock band Smith Westerns. He recalled to NME: "I thought, 'These melodies are crazy.' I woke up and realized it was actually my melody because it was my dream."

"There's a video on my laptop of me recording it half-asleep in my pants that I found a couple of weeks later."

    M Lyrics

    Hello iMage
Sing me a line from your favorite song
    Twist and turn
But you're trapped in the light
    All the directions were wrong

You'll fall in love with somebody else
    Tonight

    Help yourself
    But tell me the words
    Before you fade away
    You reveal all the secrets
    To remember the end
    And escape someday

You'll fall in love with somebody else
    Again tonight

    Take a step
    You move in time
    But it's always back...
    The reasons are clear
    Your face is drawn
And ready for the next attack

  • Cure front man Robert Smith wrote this for his wife Mary, who he commonly refers to as "M."
  • This might explain Smith's rather evasive answer to the inspiration for the song: "about a girl..." (Curenews, 1989).

The lyrics are even more cryptic, though perhaps most revealing is the opening line "hello image," which, given what we know about the inspiration of the song, seems to equate Mary with the reflection of Smith himself.

  • This was the first ever worldwide reggaetón hit. The genre is a Latino-inspired fusion of dancehall, salsa and hip-hop and had been popular amongst the Puerto Rican community in America since the 1990s.
  • The song was set to an infectious dance beat with lyrics almost entirely in Spanish describing a woman who likes to go out and have a good time. Daddy Yankee commented to Billboard magazine: "I think part of the success of the track was people looking for some hidden meaning: Was I talking about alcohol, about drugs? That track is completely literal. It's the most innocent song I've ever written."
  • The chorus "A mi me gusta la gasoline, dame más gasoline" is a very popular Puerto Rican saying. It translates as "I like gasoline, give me more gasoline."
  • The line "dame más gasolina" was sung by reggaetón singer Glory (born Glorimar Montalvo Castro), who is also known as "La Gata Gangster."
  • This was used in a TV advertising campaign for the 2006 Citroën C2 Deejay, which ran through the spring and summer of 2005.
  • The Barrie Fino album was the first-ever reggaetón long player to sell over one million copies in the United States and be certified platinum by the RIAA. It was the best-selling Latin album and tropical album of the 2000s.

    Lights On Lyrics

I shy away in my mind
In hopes in that I could share this place with you
You’ll be the first one to find
The shadows that make the girl you undo
'Cause the man that you are is to find
By the way you act in the light
    Break or seize me
If the flame gets blown out in the shine
I will know that you can not be mine
    Never leave me

When I trust you we can do it with the Lights On
When I trust you we’ll make love until the morning
Let me tell you all my secrets and I’ll whisper ‘til the day’s done

When I trust you we can do it with the lights on
When I trust you we’ll make love until the morning
Let me tell you all my secrets and I’ll whisper ‘til the day’s done

    Break or seize me
Let the things that I tell you survive
In the way that you handle your size
    Never leave me

When I trust you we can do it with the lights on
When I trust you we’ll make love until the morning
Let me tell you all my secrets and I’ll whisper ‘til the day’s done

When I trust you we can do it with the lights on
When I trust you we’ll make love until the morning

  • For many, the initial reaction to the song's chorus is that it is about physical vulnerability in a sexual relationship. However Twigs told Pitchfork the lyric isn't as lustful as it seems. "Some of the songs that people think are the most sexual are not at all to me," she said. "Like when I sing, 'If you want to touch me you can do it with the lights on,' that's a metaphor for letting certain people see the different, ugly sides of you that others won't be able to see."

Somewhere along the line the chorus got altered as the lyric actually goes, "When I trust you we can do it with the lights on."

    She Drives Me Crazy Lyrics

    I can't stop the way I feel
Things you do don't seem real.
Tell me what you've got in mind,
'cause we're running out of time.
Won't you ever set me free?
    This waiting 'round's killing me.

She Drives Me Crazy like no one else.
She drive me crazy, and I can't help myself.

    I can't get any rest,
    People say I'm obsessed.
    Everything you say is lies,
But to me that's no surprise.
What I had for you was true.
Things go wrong, they always do.

She drives me crazy like no one else.
She drive me crazy, and I can't help myself.

Tell me what you've got in mind,
'cause we're running out of time.
Won't you ever set me free?
    This waiting 'round's killing me.

She drives me crazy like no one else.
She drive me crazy, and I can't help myself.

I won't make it on my own.
No one likes to be a lone.

She drives me crazy like no one else.
She drive me crazy, and I can't help myself.

  • When Fine Young Cannibals first tried to record this, lead singer Roland Gift used his regular voice and the song was "She's My Baby." No one involved with the recording liked it, but a revamping of the lyrics and a falsetto voice for the new "She Drives Me Crazy" changed everybody's opinion of the song.

This bizarre vocal styling had quite an impact and made the song both a huge hit and inescapable earworm, as it is now impossible to think of the title without Gift's variation burrowing into your brain.

The rest of the chorus plays off this styling, ending in some extended words as Gift sings, "I can't he-elp my se-elf."
  • After Barry Levinson heard the music the Fine Young Cannibals provided for Jonathan Demme's Something Wild, he asked them for some songs for a movie he was directing called Tin Men. Levinson wanted fresh music that would still convey the vibe of the '60s-era Baltimore portrayed in the film.

"The sound of The Fine Young Cannibals has a sparseness to it," says Levinson in the film's production notes, "and reminds me very much of the uncluttered music of the early '60s. It's somewhat of a basic sound, yet it has an unusual kind of richness in combining modern rhythms with traditional soul music."

"She Drives Me Crazy" was one of several songs the group provided for the soundtrack, including "Social Security," "Good Thing," "Hard As It Is" and "Tell Me What." They even appeared in the movie as a house band.
  • This was their first #1 single in the US. They had another just months later - "Good Thing."
  • Despite being from England, FYC never had a #1 single in the UK. The album The Raw and the Cooked went to #1, though.
  • Dolly Parton covered this on her 2008 album Backwoods Barbie The country legend explained to Observer Music Monthly April 2008: "It's a song my husband loves. So I did it as bluegrass with a little hoedown towards the end."
  • This song got the Weird Al treatment when the parody artist turned it into "She Drives Like Crazy," about a woman you don't want in the driver's seat. Arsenio Hall also recorded a spoof, under the name "Chunky A," called "Ho is Crazy" in 1989.
  • This song was also featured in several other movies, including The Other Sister (1999), Hitch (2005), Towelhead (2007) and The Back-up Plan (2010).
  • Damon Wayans performed part of this song on In Living Color in a parody of the long-running musical variety show Soul Train called "Old Train."

"When I was 27, I crushed a lot," explained the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer. "I wasn't sure I'd ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing love crusade. I hope they keep you company on yours."

"'Rapt' is the second song written on this curated collection of crush songs from my personal library," Karen O added. This track is about someone who became a habit that was hard to kick."

    The Power of Love Lyrics

The Power of Love is a curious thing
Make a one man weep, make another man sing
Change a heart to a little white dove
More than a feeling, that's the power of love

Tougher than diamonds, whips like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girls dream
Make a bad one good, mmm make a wrong right
Power of love will keep you home at night.

Don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life
    That's the power of love,
    That's the power of love

First time you feed it might make you sad
Next time you feed it might make you mad
But you'll be glad baby when you've found
That's the power that make the world go round

They say that all in love is fair
    Yeah but you don't care
But you know what to do
When it gets hold of you
And with a little help from above
You feel the power of love

Don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
You won't feel it until you feel
You feel the power, feel the power of love
That's the power, that's the power of love
You feel the power of love

The Power of Love Song Chart
  • This was featured in the movie Back to the Future and included on the soundtrack. It plays in a scene where Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) hears it as he rides his skateboard from the doctor's house to school.
  • This was the last song added to the movie because it was finished just two days before the final mix of the movie was completed. Back to the Future went into production with "I Want a New Drug" as a temporary track to use until a more suitable song was written. "I Want a New Drug" did make the movie - it is in a scene where Marty McFly listens to it as his alarm clock goes off.
  • Along with Stephen Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, music supervisor Bones Howe lobbied Lewis to write and record a song with a time theme for the movie - Lewis said that he had "a great idea" for a song called "Nick of Time." The producers and director (Zemeckis) loved it, but other commitments kept Lewis from delivering "Nick of Time" to Back to the Future - Patti LaBelle ended up singing it over the end titles of another film, Brewster's Millions. The producers of Back To The Future were upset about losing "Nick of Time," but Lewis assured them that he had a better song for the end of the film: "Back in Time."
  • An early scene in the film has Marty McFly and his band auditioning for the high school dance. Lewis played the teacher that turns McFly down. The group plays the beginning of this when Lewis cuts them off before singing a note.
  • This was the first of 3 US #1 hits for the group. The others were "Stuck With You" and "Jacob's Ladder." (thanks Brad Wind - Miami, FL for all above)
  • This appears on several greatest hits compilations. Its only appearance on a Huey Lewis studio album is the UK version of Fore!
  • In the '70s, Huey Lewis was in a band called Clover with Alex Call, who went on to write "Jenny (867-5309)" for Tommy Tutone and "Little Too Late" for Pat Benatar. He provided the title. Says Alex:
I was hanging out in LA and writing, and I had kind of a big power ballad thing called Power Of Love. Huey called me up one day and said, 'What are you writing,' and I said, 'I've got this song called Power Of Love.' A few months later, they cut me in the deal. It's a lot like a song I would write. Huey and I go back a ways together, and we used to room together - we had a house together and listened to a lot of music together. That song really could be one of my songs, which sounds crazy because they wrote it, and I think they're brilliant - Johnny Colla and Chris Hayes are the guys who really did that music. That modulation and all that kind of stuff, that's the same kind of stuff I do - going to the odd key for the bridge. That might be why I'm having a hard time getting cuts here in Nashville, because I still do that kind of stuff."

According to Alex, Lewis gave him 10% of the publishing in exchange for the title, which was done out of goodwill, as titles aren't copyrighted.
  • Around this time, a lot of songs came out with the same title, including a Laura Branigan song that became hit for Celine Dion. Says Call, "If a title is floating around, a lot of songwriters get it. There's no doubt about it, I've heard that so many times over the years, so I know it's true. You have thousands of qualified songwriters every day trying to come up with titles for songs. There's how many songs called 'I Will?'"
  • Call did not get a composer credit for his contribution, but he does get paid for it. He explains: "Rock bands, they frequently piece stuff out and then don't put everybody on the copyright. I think in that case, they didn't want my name on the copyright. I think they knew it was going to be a huge breakout hit and they didn't want to confuse the issue with somebody outside the circle. I was happy to get paid. I was a little miffed at the time - if I had my name on that I could have turned it into a publishing deal, but then I'd probably be living in LA and I hated LA, so it's just as well that it worked out the way it did." (Check out our interview with Alex Call.)
  • The Tower of Power horn section played on this. In addition to their '70s R&B hits like "You're Still A Young Man" and "What Is Hip?," Tower of Power's horn section has played on albums by Santana, Heart, America, Elton John and many others. Founding member Emilio Castillo told us how they got together with Huey Lewis & the News:
We toured with Huey Lewis for 4 years. He asked me to go on tour when he hit it big with that Sports album. He called me up, said, 'This record is going to the moon, we've got the money, we're wondering if we can hire your horn section to go on the road with us.' I said I'd love to do it, but my main thing in life is Tower of Power, the band, not the horn section. We were at a low point in our career, we were not doing well. We didn't have a record deal, we were definitely at a low ebb in the cycle. I told him, 'If you promise me that you'll promote my band at every turn, every interview, every way possible, I will do the tour. And also, I want you to allow us to bring the band out to certain key cities to do midnight shows at the local night club and I want you to promise me that you guys will come and sit in, because then it will be a scene.' He was true to his word. He mentioned us in every interview, called us by name several times during the show. He did a couple of Tower of Power songs in the show every night and then after the show was done he would always say, 'We're all going down to, let's say... Toad's Place in New Haven, Tower of Power's playing a midnight show we're going to go jam with them.' We'd go play and it would be packed because everybody wanted to see Huey Lewis and they'd come up and jam with us. We did that in several cities. That really sort of regenerated our career." "'Mason Jar' is a song that we have been looking for for a long time," guitarist Miguel Cancino said. • Stovall said regarding the song's meaning: "It's using the metaphor of drinking up a mason jar as how you can't get enough of this love that you're in at the moment."
  • A Mason jar is a molded glass jar used in canning to preserve food. It was invented and patented in 1858 by Philadelphia tinsmith John Landis Mason. The easy and re-usable jars made home canning popular for mid 19th century Americans, but most Mason jars were manufactured by competitors after his patent expired in 1879. Other references to Mason jars in songs include:

"Mother's Day" by Kellie Pickler ("You can set 'em in the window in a mason jar. Dad will take our photograph. One two three. Smile, say cheese. Oh I wish it could be that way. Every mother's day")

"Son of the New South" by Travis Tritt ("This is the New South, still drink our tea from a Mason jar. We're the backbone of this country and we're proud of who we are. From Richmond to Montgomery")

"Mexican Moonshine" by Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers ("So Roger and I, and flashlights, a bottle of bacanora - which was in a mason jar that used to have peaches in it, so it was peach-flavored bacanora, basically, ...")

"C-O-U-N-T-R-Y" by Joe Diffie ("I ain't never hauled hay in the trunk of my car, But I drunk a little shine from a mason jar. I know how to work and how ta have fun, I'm a good-timin', blue-collar, ...")

"Reality" by Kenny Chesney ("Moonshine in a mason jar. And everybody has their way. Somehow to escape. Reality, yeah, sometimes life. Ain't all that it's cracked up to be.")

Tubular Bells (Part 1) Song Chart
  • This is an instrumental song that is more than 25 minutes long. The most famous part is the intro, which was used as the theme to the 1973 horror movie The Exorcist.
  • More than half of the instruments were played by Mike Oldfield. He insists that minimal synthesizer was used. (thanks Jeff - Kendall Park, NJ for above 2)
  • Some unusual instruments were used to record this, including a Farfisa organ, a Lowrey organ, and a flageolet (a kind of wind instrument). There were also flutes, a mandolin, and the tubular bells. The bells are represented on the album cover.
  • This makes up side one of the album. "Tubular Bells (Part 2)" makes up side two and is around 23 minutes long.
  • All the major record companies turned down the album. It was finally released on a new label called Virgin Records, and became the first album they issued. Virgin has since grown into a massive company, with an airline, record stores, and cell phone interests. Some of the artists who recorded for Virgin Records included The White Stripes, Moby, Aimee Mann, and The Black Crowes.
  • This was Oldfield's first album. It sold over 16 million copies.
  • The album hit #2 in the UK and #3 in the US. An edited version was released as the single and hit #7 in the US.
  • In 2003, Oldfield released a remastered version of the album to commemorate 30 years since it's release.
  • The UK release concluded with a rousing version of "The Sailor's Hornpipe" and a severely drunken Viv Stanshall babbling wondrously meaningless nonsense in an imitation of stuffy BBC announcers. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath)
  • Oldfield told the Daily Mail March 14, 2008 that he'd been badgering Richard Branson and his business partner, Simon Draper of Virgin Records, to give him a break. He recalled: "They had been fobbing me off for a year. I was actually about to apply for citizenship of the USSR, where I thought I could become a state-funded musician. Then the phone run and it was Simon Draper asking me to come to dinner with Richard and his wife on their houseboat.
Eventually, he asked me what I needed to make an album. So I gave him a list of guitars, drums and pianos. Tubular Bells weren't actually on the list. But, as I arrived at the studio, I noticed they were bringing some out from the last session, and I grabbed them. I had a hunch they might be useful."
  • Tubular Bells was one of the benchmark albums of the Progressive Rock era, spending 279 weeks in the UK chart and selling 15 million copies worldwide.
  • Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in 2014, Oldfield attributed much of Tubular Bells' success to its unusual key signature. "Most music is in 4/4 time, but that curious little figure at the beginning is in 15/8. It's like a puzzle with a little bit missing," he said. "That's why it sticks in the brain. And that's why it worked so well as the soundtrack to The Exorcist - with that little bit missing everything is not quite right."

    Tell Her Song Chart
  • The first single from Rizzle Licks' third album, this is their first straightforward love song. They emphasize, however, that it is "Not a soppy one."
  • The song was first heard as the soundtrack to a promotional video for Evian mineral water. The Wimbledon-themed visual starred Maria Sharapova and saw the Rizzle Kicks duo vying for attention from their tennis star crush.
  • A second video was released, which was directed by the Lennox Brothers, who have also worked with Ellie Goulding and Kasabian. The clip follows the significantly shrunken Rizzle Kicks duo driving around in a miniature monster truck.
  • The soulful song was recorded with Ben Cullum, brother of Jamie. Jordan told The Sun: "I was filming a TV show and Harley used the time to go into the studio and start cresting some new stuff."

"'Tell Her' was part of the first batch and obviously it sounded wicked on demo, with the beat and his verse. Harley took the idea to Ben Cullum and it worked out well really."

    Oh Happy Day Song Chart
  • This is the only traditional Gospel song ever to crossover and become a hit on the Pop charts. "Oh Happy Day" is a Protestant hymn that dates from 1755. It is included in the standard Baptist hymnal.
  • Edwin Hawkins was a pianist at Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, California when he came up with the popular Latin/Soul version of this song in 1968. In an October 23, 2009 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he explained that "Oh Happy Day" was one of eight arrangements he put together for the Northern California State Youth Choir, which was made up of 46 singers ages 17 to 25, and the plan was to sell an album of the songs to finance a trip to a church youth conference in Washington, D.C. The tracks were quickly recorded live in church on a two-track tape machine (industry standard at the time was eight-track), but the records weren't pressed in time for the trip. They did attend the conference, and the choir placed second in a singing competition, where they performed 2 of Hawkins' arrangements, but not "Oh Happy Day," which Hawkins said was "Not our favorite song."

500 copies of the album were made, and one of them found its way to the popular DJ Abe "Voco" Kesh at KSAN-FM in San Francisco. Other stations followed, and Buddah Records signed Hawkins to a record deal, rechristening the Northern California State Youth Choir "The Edwin Hawkins Singers" for their reissue of the album, which became a huge hit.
  • The female lead is Dorothy Morrison, who signed her own deal with Buddah Records when this became a hit.
  • This song was recorded for the Gospel market, and its secular success didn't go over well with everyone at the church: local officials of the denomination circulated a petition asking secular radio stations to stop airing the song. Hawkins had a different take. He told The Chronicle: "I think they thought they were doing the right thing. What confused me about it was they were teaching us all our lives that we were to take the message everywhere."
  • Dan Sorkin, who was a famous DJ on radio station KSFO in San Francisco, was a big supporter of this song and gave it a huge push on his morning show. He even interviewed Dorothy Morrison and Edwin Hawkins.
  • This won a Grammy Award for Best Soul Gospel Performance.
  • This is the song that the late Beatle George Harrison claimed he got the idea for "My Sweet Lord," not The Chiffons' "He's So Fine" which he was blamed for. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA)
