Love Rollercoaster Lyrics

Love Rollercoaster
  • For the sake of a good story, Angus Young used to tell reporters that "Thunderstruck" was born from a flight where AC/DC's plane was struck by lightning. While that tale was embellished, The Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster" really did come from a harrowing flight. The group was traveling to a show in a twin engine airplane (a Navajo), while flying through turbulent, stormy weather. As their drummer Jimmy "Diamond" Williams tells it, he was in the co-pilot seat when the plane hit air pockets that dropped it at least 400 feet (he saw the instruments). Someone on the plane commented that they must love their jobs, since the airplane ride was a "love rollercoaster." Lead singer Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner wrote the lyrics around that phrase, with the band working up the track. Both the writing and production credits on the song go to the band.
  • This song is the subject of an urban myth. During an instrumental break, there is a scream that sounds a little out of place. It was rumored that the scream was the sound of a woman being murdered in the studio. According to the story, which was started by a DJ in California, this woman was the model who appeared on the album cover. She was kneeling on glass and pouring honey in her mouth. While she was doing it, she found out that the glass was actually fiber glass and the honey reacted with the fiber glass by sticking to her legs and ripping all the skin off. She went in the manager's studio while the band was still recording and threatened to sue the band, which is when the manager stabbed her to death. The band left in the scream as a cruel joke. The scream was actually keyboard player Billy Beck. Instead of telling the truth, the band agreed to coyly answer "no comment" when asked about the rumor, claiming they took a vow of silence. The ploy worked, as the urban legend gave the song a buzz and help sell records.
  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded a version of this for the soundtrack of the 1996 movie Beavis And Butthead Do America. Their version hit #7 in the UK.
  • This song was used for the movie Final Destination 3, which follows a group of teenagers who avoid death by rollercoaster, but cannot escape fate. (thanks, Kat - Grafton, MA)
  • In the US, this was used in a TV commercial for Volkswagen. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The Ohio Players's leader, singer, and guitarist Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner died on January 26, 2013 at the age of 71 from cancer. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    What Can I Do
  • The follow-up to SecondCity's UK #1 single, "I Wanna Feel," this features vocals by Ali Love. The song was released through Ministry of Sound Recordings/Speakerbox.
  • Ali Love (real name Alexander Williams) is a British singer, who first came to fame when he provided vocals for The Chemical Brothers 2007 hit, "Do It Again." He also sung on Justice's 2011 track, "Civilization."
  • The collaboration with Ali Love was completed within an hour. "It happened quite sneakily," SecondCity told MTV UK. "I just thought he'd be really cool (for the track). I didn't know him at the time but a friend of mine knew him and was like 'shall we give him a call?' and I was like 'really?! Alright, cool, do it,' and they just called him up and they were like 'Oh I'm in the studio with Secondcity, do you want to come down and we'll record some vocals?' and he was just like 'yeah why not I'll come down now' and an hour later he was there!"

"We played him the record and he was like 'yeah this is so sick, I absolutely love it, lets just do it' and he just started singing there and then. Within an hour it was kind of done!"

Secondcity added: "He was someone I'd had in the back of my mind for a long time from like (Hot Natured track) Benediction and his older stuff as well that he did with Justice and stuff like that… I'd always thought he was really good and versatile."

    Is This Love? Lyrics

    I should have known better
Than to let you go alone
    It's times like these
I can't make it on my own
    Wasted days, and sleepless nights
An' I can't wait to see you again

I find I spend my time
    Waiting on your call
How can I tell you, babe
    My back's against the wall
I need you by my side
    To tell me it's alright
'Cause I don't think I can take anymore

Is this love that I'm feeling
Is this the love that I've been searching for
Is this love or am I dreaming
    This must be love
'Cause it's really got a hold on me
    A hold on me

    I can't stop the feeling
    I've been this way before
But, with you I've found the key
    To open any door
I can feel my love for you
    Growing stronger day by day
An' I can't wait too see you again
So I can hold you in my arms

Is this love that I'm feeling
Is this the love that I've been searching for
Is this love or am I dreaming
    This must be love
'Cause it's really got a hold on me
    A hold on me

    Is This Love?
  • This mid-tempo rocker shows the sensitive side of Whitesnake's frontman David Coverdale, who wrote the song with guitarist John Sykes. Missing the typical Whitesnake swagger, this song finds Coverdale waiting by the phone for his girlfriend to call.
  • Whitesnake was the name of several of Coverdale's solo projects after he left Deep Purple. This version of the group was breaking up when the single was released, and Coverdale had to put together another band to go on the road to promote it.
  • The videos for both this and "Here I Go Again" feature actress/model and Coverdale girlfriend Tawny Kitaen. They both take place at 5:55 in the morning on city streets filled with fog. (thanks, Ty - Hollywood, FL)
  • About a year before this song was released, Survivor issued a single called "Is This Love" that also asked the question, "Is this love that I'm feeling?" That song went to #9 in the US.

    I Can't Outrun You Lyrics

    Ninety five down the interstate
Mile high on a jet plane
A desert road or a downtown train
It's all the same, I Can't Outrun You

I can move to another town
Where nobody'd ask where you are now
    L.A. or Mexico
No matter where I go, I can't outrun you

You're in my heart, you're in my mind
    Everywhere ahead, everywhere behind
    Every turn I take,
    You're right around the bend

It's like your ghost is chasing me
When I'm awake, when I'm asleep
There's a part of you in every part of me
    And I can't outrun you
    I can't outrun you

I had a chance with a boy or two
But all I ever saw was you
You're holding my hand, kissing my face
I guess some memories never fade

You're in my heart, you're in my mind
    Everywhere ahead, everywhere behind
    Every turn I take,
    You're right around the bend

It's like your ghost is chasing me
When I'm awake, when I'm asleep
There's a part of you in every part of me
    And I can't outrun you
    I can't outrun you

    Whoa, whoa

I thought there just might come a time
I wouldn't regret telling you goodbye
If there was I'll never know
No matter where I go I can't outrun you

    I Can't Outrun You
  • This song was inspired by a real-life heartbreaking situation for songwriter Kyle Jacobs, who penned the tune with Joe Leathers and Ben Glover.
  • Jacobs and Leathers were on Keifer and Shawna Thompson's bus one night and asked if they could play the married pair in the song. "It wasn't really a pitch," Keifer explained to Radio.com . "They played it for us, and we just loved it and got talking about it and if we should get to recording. The label was on board with it and loved it and everybody else, too."
  • Despite being happily married, Shawna said the pair could both relate to the heartbreaking situation portrayed in the song. "It's so real. We knew the story because Kyle told us the back story of the song," she said. "Even without the back story it's just a heart-wrenching song. We've been through breakups before, and we know that horrible feeling when you're trying to get over somebody because you know it's not going to work."
  • The song was originally written from a guy's perspective, but once the Thompsons got into the studio they decided to make it a duet. "We started playing around with it and turned it into a duet," Shawna said, "which is interesting, coming from two different perspectives."

    May compete
Nothin' but the dog in ya

    Atomic Dog
  • This classic Funk song explains why men are always going after women: It's because they have a little a dog in them, and dogs chase cats.
  • This was released under George Clinton's name after he lost the rights to the names "Funkadelic" and "Parliament," but he used the same musicians.
  • Clinton admitted to being in an "enhanced" state when he recorded this. He ad-libbed the lyrics.
  • When Clinton taped his vocals, the backing music was playing backward due to an engineer's error. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)
  • Snoop Doggy Dogg sampled this on his first single, "What's My Name," changing "Atomic Dog" to "Snoop Doggy Dogg." Snoop is a big fan of George Clinton. They appeared together in Nike commercials in 2002.
  • When Clinton and P-Funk play this live, it goes on for quite some time.
  • The unique sounding rhythm of this song is a result of a simple 2 bar drum beat, played backwards using tape. (thanks, Dave - Marieta, GA)

    End Up Here Lyrics

    You walked in
Everyone was asking for your name
You just smiled and told them "Trouble"

    My head spins
    I'm pressed against the wall
    Just watching your every move
    You're way too cool
    And you're coming this way
    Coming this way

How did we end up talking in the first place?
You said you liked my Cobain shirt
Now we're walking back to your place
You're telling me how you love that song
    About living on a prayer
I'm pretty sure that we're halfway there
And when I wake up next to you I wonder how
How did we End Up Here?

    (How did we end up,
How did we end up here?)

    Next day out
Everybody thought you were so insane
'Cause you were so far out of my league

My friends say I should lock you down
Before you figure me out and you run away
But you don't and you won't as you kiss me
And you tell me that you're here to stay

How did we end up talking in the first place?
You said you liked my Cobain shirt
Now we're walking back to your place
You're telling me how you love that song
    About living on a prayer
I'm pretty sure that we're halfway there
And when I wake up next to you I wonder how
How did we end up here?

Call me lucky 'cause in the end
    I'm a six and she's a ten
    She's so fit, I'm insecure
But she keeps coming back for more

How did we end up talking in the first place?
You said you liked my Cobain shirt
Now we're walking back to your place
You're telling me how you love that song
    About living on a prayer
I'm pretty sure that we're halfway there
And when I wake up next to you I wonder how

    End Up Here
  • This rollicking punk-popper was penned by 5SOS's Michael and Ashton along with All Time Low vocalist Alex Gaskarth and producer John Feldmann, who co-wrote "Heroes" for All Time Low's 2011 Dirty Work album.

All Time Low is one of a trio of influences named on 5 Seconds of Summer's official Facebook page, and Alex Gaskarth also co-wrote "Kiss Me Kiss Me" and "Long Way Home" for their debut album.
  • Luke sings on the chorus:

How did we end up talking in the first place?
You said you liked my Cobain shirt

Having previously sung of admiring American Apparel underwear on a girl in "She Looks So Perfect," Luke now sings of a female attracted to his shirt, which pays tribute to the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
  • This song was designed to be a live crowd-pleaser. "We wanted to write something uptempo that gets the crowd jumping," 5SOS drummer Ashton Irwin explained. "We wanted a song that lifts the crowd. We always think about tempos that will make the crowd go crazy - we want a party atmosphere at our shows."

    Georgia, Georgia,
    The whole day through
    Just an old sweet song

    Georgia On My Mind
  • This was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell in 1930. Carmichael was an actor, performer, and popular songwriter - some of his other compositions include "Stardust" and "Winter Moon." Gorrell was a banker living in New York City, and he wrote the lyrics.
  • It's possible that this was written about a woman, not the state. Carmichael and Gorrell didn't live in Georgia, but Carmichael did have a sister named Georgia.
  • This was a #10 hit for a Jazz saxophone player named Frankie Trumbauer in 1931. Many artists have recorded it over the years, including Louis Armstrong, James Brown (a Georgia native), Django Reinhardt, and Willie Nelson. Charles' version is by far the most famous.
  • Charles decided to record this after his driver suggested it, since Ray kept singing it while riding in the car.
  • Ray Charles was born in Georgia. His family moved to Florida when he was still a baby.
  • The orchestra was arranged by Ralph Burns, Woody Herman's pianist.
  • This was recorded quickly in New York City - it took only four takes to complete (compared to Charles' usual 10-12 takes).
  • This won Grammy awards for Best Male Vocal Recording and Best Pop Song Performance. The album also won for Best Male Vocal Performance Album, and another song on the album, "Let the Good Times Roll," won for Best R&B Performance, giving Charles a total of 4 Grammys in 1960.
  • Five different versions of this song have made the US Hot 100. Here the four that came after Charles' recording:

    Righteous Brothers (#62, 1966)
    Georgia Pines Candymen (#81, 1967)
    Wes Montgomery (#91, 1968)
    Willie Nelson (#84, 1978)
    Michael Bolton (#36, 1990)
  • This was the first of three #1 records for Ray Charles ("Hit the Road, Jack" and "I Can't Stop Loving You" are his others).
  • In 1979, this became the official state song of Georgia.
  • Willie Nelson sang this at Charles' funeral in 2004.
  • Charles won eight awards at the 2005 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year (for Genius Loves Company). He was honored throughout the show; Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx performed this as part of the tribute. Foxx had recently portrayed Charles in the movie Ray.

Leave me bleeding, leave me dying on my own
Leave me wanting, climb your way into my soul
    I don't like it, I can't live without a trace
I can't hide it, I can't take away its face

    I don't know my name

I'm turning into stone, Turning To Stone

You can't hear me, you can't see me in your space
You don't believe in me, even when you kneel and pray
Since I found you, I've been wanting you so bad
I'm all around you, willing to take those things I never had

    I don't know my name
    I've turned against my home
I don't know who to blame
    I'm turning into stone

    Turning To Stone
  • Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola originally wrote this song down at their Florida HQ, before frontman Sully Erna added some finishing touches. Larkin recalled to Artist Direct : "When Sully came down here, I was playing the drum beat I had off a ride cymbal. He was like, 'Dude, I want to create space.' He wrote the drum beat that ended up being the verse to that. It's really tribal. He's very good at the hand drums and tribal sounds. He heard this beat, and I thought, 'Oh my God, I never would've thought of that.'"

"After we played it a bunch of times at pre-production up in Boston, it came together," Larkin continued. "It created a lot of space. It's different. It has a 'Voodoo' vibe to it. Shout out to my boy Sully Erna! He took a song Tony and I had written, put his stamp on it, and made it sound like this cool, dark Godsmack song."

    I remember all my life
Raining down as cold as ice
    A shadow of a man
    A face through a window
    Crying in the night
    The night goes into

    Morning, just another day
    Happy people pass my way
    Looking in their eyes
    I see a memory
    I never realized
How happy you made me, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Will you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

I'm standing on the edge of time
I walked away when love was mine
Caught up in a world of uphill climbing
The tears are in my eyes
And nothing is rhyming, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Will you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

    Yesterday's a dream
    I face the morning
    Crying on the breeze
The pain is calling, oh Mandy

Well you came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
Will you kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

You came and you gave without taking
But I sent you away, oh Mandy
You kissed me and stopped me from shaking
And I need you today, oh Mandy

    Mandy
  • Scott English wrote the lyrics and recorded this song in 1971 as "Brandy." His version was a hit in the UK. In the US, this was changed to "Mandy" to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass hit "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)."
  • Richard Kerr wrote the music. Kerr is a pianist who teamed up with Will Jennings to write two more hits for Manilow: "Looks Like We Made It" and "Somewhere In The Night."
  • This was Manilow's first hit single and the first song on Clive Davis' Arista Records label (formerly Bell) to hit the Billboard Hot 100. (thanks, Todd - Atlanta, GA, for above 3)
  • The bit about "Mandy" being about Manilow's dog is an urban myth. Songwriter and original performer Scott English says he was woken by a phone call from a reporter, wanting to know who "Brandy" was. "I would have said anything to get rid of him," says English, "So I spat out the first thing that came to mind: It was about a dog like Lassie and I had sent her away - now you go away!' And I hung up on him." (thanks, Judy - Melbourne, Australia)
  • The Simpsons parodied this in the episode in which Homer feels torn between his attractive new co-worker (Mindy) and his own wife. They were in a hotel room together, and a turkey slips behind the bed. Later, when Homer brings Marge to the room, he starts singing to her, "Oh, Margie, you came and you found me a turkey." (thanks, Sarah - St. Petersburg, FL)
  • The song was on an episode of Family Guy titled "Back to the Woods." Barry Manilow comes to Quahog, but not without a little bit of criticism from Peter and his friends, until all admit they are closet Manilow fans. In the episode, Barry plays himself and sings his own version of "Mandy," re-titled as "Quagmire" for having an exotic name. The words are the same, but the name has changed. (thanks, Logan - Troy, MT)

    She's Not Me Lyrics

I used to think you could save me,
    I've been wandering lately
    Heard she's having your baby,
    And everything's so amazing
It goes on and on and on and on,
It goes on and on and on and on

But She's Not Me, she's easy

All those times we were making love,
I never thought we'd be breaking up
Bet you tell her I'm crazy
It goes on and on and on and on,
It goes on and on and on and on

But she's not me, she's easy

Remember the night I destroyed it all
When I told you I cheated,
And you punched through the drywall
    I took you for granted
When you were all that I needed!

But she's not me, she's easy
She's not me, she's not me
    She's easy, she's easy
She's not me, she's not me

    She's Not Me
  • This song, which finds Lewis touching upon jealousy and infidelity, was inspired by Keith Richards' 2010 memoir, Life. She told Billboard magazine: "I was reading Keith's book, and I thought I'd tinker with his open-tuning style."
  • This was produced by Ryan Adams after Lewis direct-messaged the alternative rocker on Twitter asking help with this song. Adams ended up producing the majority of The Voyager album.
  • Asked by HMV.com what Adams was like as a producer, Lewis replied: "He's a lot more like Phil Spector than not. He's eccentric in the studio, you have to bend to his rule, there's no room for you to be late or slack off, Ryan has so much energy and so much drive."

"His methods are difficult to understand at first, but by the end you're like 'This guy is an amazing producer,'" she added. "He would wind me up, but always to make sure he got a good performance out of me."
  • Jenny Lewis recruited her famous friends Zosia Mamet, Fred Armisen, Vanessa Bayer, Leo Fitzpatrick and Feist for the song's music video. Lewis and her pals recreate some of the former Rilo Kiley singer's parts back in the days when she was a child actress, including Golden Girls and Troop Beverly Hills. "The video is about former identities and incarnations of one's self," Lewis told Buzzfeed . "It's a super meta retrospective on my career."

    Mother Lyrics

    Mother, you had me
    But I never had you
    I wanted you
    But you didn't want me
    So
I just got to tell you
    Goodbye
    Goodbye

    Father, you left me
    But I never left you
    I needed you
    But you didn't need me
    So
    I just got to tell
    Goodbye
    Goodbye

    Children, don't do
    What I have done
    I couldn't walk
    And I tried to run
    So
I just got to tell you
    Goodbye
    Goodbye

    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go

    Mother
  • Lennon wrote this while he was undergoing "Primal Scream" therapy, where he was dealing with a lot of issues that were detailed in the lyrics: He lost his mother at a crucial period in his life to a drunk-driving, off-duty policeman who ran her over in a crosswalk, and his aunt Mimi raised him, which explains the line, "Mother you had me, but I never had you." His father, a merchant seaman, left him for the sea and for work. "I wanted you, you didn't need me" explains his feelings about his dad. Lennon's primal screaming on this song expresses the pain of his childhood. (thanks, Bob - Boston, MA)
  • The church bell heard at the start of this track was actually faster and higher-pitched initially, and John actually slowed it down to make it sound spookier and more haunting. His intention was to sound the death knell for his old life with The Beatles.(thanks, Noel - Barrow-In-Furness, England)
  • This features Klaus Voormann on bass and Ringo Starr on drums. In addition to his work in music, Voorman is an artist, and designed the cover of The Beatles album Revolver. He also played bass with Manfred Mann. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • On many of his early solo recordings such as this one, Lennon's arrangements are more simpler and sparser than on the Beatles songs. In the January 1971 edition of Rolling Stone, he explained this was because, "I've always liked simple rock." The former Beatle added: "I was influenced by acid and got psychedelic, like the whole generation, but really, I like rock and roll and I express myself best in rock. I had a few ideas to do this with 'Mother' and that with 'Mother' but when you just hear, the piano does it all for you, your mind can do the rest. I think the backings on mine are as complicated as the backings on any record you've ever heard, if you've got an ear.

Anybody knows that. Any musician will tell you, just play a note on a piano, it's got harmonics in it. It got to that. What the hell, I didn't need anything else."
  • Producer John Leckie explained to Uncut magazine August 2010 that the screams heard on this track were actually edited into the song once the rest of the vocal had been recorded. Lennon would attempt the screaming finale every night, careful never to try it in the daytime in case it destroyed his voice. "The screams were double-tracked," Leckie pointed out. "John didn't like the raw sound of his own voice. He always wanted lots of stuff on it. Spector's contribution, really, was to be generous with reverb and echo."
  • This is one of three songs which Lennon wrote for his mother, along with "Julia" and "My Mummy's Dead".
  • The psychologist Arthur Janov created primal scream therapy, which he detailed in his book The Primal Scream. Folks were always sending Lennon books, and a copy of Janov's book found him. Lennon was intrigued because the therapy reminded him of the screaming Yoko would often do in her works, but then he looked into it as a way of helping him resolve issues from his childhood. John and Yoko invited Janov to England, where they met with him to vet his practice. They liked what they heard and decided to try some sessions when they went to Los Angeles. For Lennon, it was a breakthrough, and led to this song.

"It's just a matter of breaking the wall that's there in yourself and come out and let it all hang out to the point that you start crying," Yoko said in describing the therapy (Uncut, 1998). She added: "He was going back to the days of when he wanted to scream, 'Mother.' He was able to go back to that childhood, that memory."

I feel the flames of your fire
    And it's burning my heart
    Girl, you've got game
And my number, and it ain't gonna stop
    Hold me, love me
    Call my name
I just want you to feel me
    Breathe me, tease me
Can't control how I feel when you're near me
I can't do nothing about it
Got that feeling comin' over me

    I can't contain my desire
    And I'm coming apart
I'm just a slave for your pleasure and I'm waiting to pop

  • This single from Lenny Kravitz' Strut album finds him out of control with his feelings for a girl. "This is one of my favorite tracks on the album," he told Billboard magazine. "It was recorded with minimal instrumentation, guitar, bass and drums. The strength of the groove comes from the sparse production which creates space."
  • The song's music video was directed by Dikayl Rimmasch, who is a filmmaker and photographer based in New York. His resume includes a three-part film series starring Beyoncé and Jay Z for the couple's On the Run tour. Kravitz said of the clip; "I love the Fellini-esque vibe of the video. When I heard the concept, I knew that Dikayl was out of his mind; and that was the attraction."

Rimmasch added: "I couldn't think of anything more surreal. It made me laugh. Lenny went for it. The shoot was chaotic. The day after I walked to the beach with a hangover, laid in the sand, and thought - 'what have I done?'"
