Left Hand Free Lyrics

Hey shady baby I'm hot
Like the prodigal son
Pick a battle eenie meenie miney moe
Hey flower you're the chosen one

Well your left hand's free
And your right's in grip
With another left hand
Watch his right hand slip
Towards his gun, oh no

I tackle weeds just so the moon buggers nibble
A right hand grip on his Colt single-action army

Well your left hand's free
And your right's in grip
With another left hand
Watch his right hand slip
Towards his gun, oh no

N-E-O, O-M-G, gee whiz
Girl you're the one for me
Though your man's bigger than I am
All my days he disagrees, oh no

Well my left hand's free
Well my left hand's free
Well my left hand's free

Hey shady baby I'm hot
Like the prodigal son
Pick a battle eenie meenie miney moe
Hey flower you're the chosen one

Well your left hand's free
Well my left hand's free
Well my left hand's free
Well my left hand's free
Well my left hand's free
Oh no

Left Hand Free
  • Speaking about this tune to The Guardian the band called it "the least Alt-J song ever." They wrote the cut to appease their American label who didn't think the lead track "Hunger Of The Pine" was a "big single."

The song was written in twenty minutes and is based around a "joke riff" that vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman had been playing in rehearsals.

Drummer Thom Green said: "I tried to make the drums as cliched as possible, there's none of my personality in it."

Newman added: "And I say, 'Gee whizz', which I'm not sure is a phrase I've ever uttered before. I can imagine it appealing to American truckers with Good Riddance To Bin Laden stickers!"

The song was released to United States modern rock radio on July 15, 2014 as the second single from This Is All Yours.
  • The song's music video was filmed along the Guadalupe River near Austin, Texas, by director Ryan Staake, who's also helmed clips for Diplo, Robyn and Major Lazer. The clip shows some college-aged kids having fun shooting off fireworks, river rafting and riding ATVs during their summer break.
  • Despite the song's almost-clichéd rock sound and tongue-in-cheek video, Joe Newman insisted to DIY magazine it wasn't their intention to subvert anything. Instead, it was something they came up with spontaneously. "We really just go with what feels right when we're playing together," he asserted.

"'Left Hand Free' was a leap into a completely different world for us, but we were enjoying it, so we kept doing it, we thought it was funny, we thought we could play characters," Newman added. "That's what we do with all of our music, we do it because it sounds good."

    The Decline Lyrics

    The Decline
  • This song is about social decline in American society. (thanks, Zachary - Charlotte, NC)
  • It is rumored that NOFX did to Pink Floyd's movie The Wall what Pink Floyd did to The Wizard of Oz. On the front of NOFX's CD The Decline, there is a young boy holding a plane. In the movie The Wall, a young boy holding a plane appears in the movie about 16 minutes in. Coincidence? You can try it yourself (there are a few more coincidences, such as a gun when he's singing about a gun, explosions on beat...), all you have to do is play the movie, and at the Lion's second roar start the song. Nothing will happen for a few minutes, but just wait, it is kind of cool. What I thought was the best is when the song gets slower, and the film changes to a mellow scene for the exact amount of time. When the movie gets full of action, and explosions, the music picks up.
  • There is a drug reference to marijuana around the time 4:20. (thanks, Paul - Pittsburgh, PA, for above 2)
  • A "dime" is a dimebag of marijuana, which is worth more in Detroit because they have a stricter marijuana policy, where, in California, it's only a $20 fine. (thanks, Matt - Smithville, TN)
  • In the song they reference "Serotonin's gone," which is a chemical in the body that is believed to be a contributor to well being and happiness. This may tie in to the lyric "One more pill to kill the pain," in which SSRIs (antidepressants) adjust the serotonin levels in the body. (thanks, Taylor - Norristown, PA)

We take a chance from time to time
And put our necks out on the line
And you have broken every promise that we made
And I have loved you anyway

Took a fine time to leave me hangin' out to dry
    Understand now I'm greivin'
So don't you waste my time
    'Cause you have taken
All the wind out from my sails
And I have loved you just the same

    We finally find this
    then you're gone
    Been chasin' rainbows all along
    And you have cursed me
When there's no one left to blame
And I have loved you just the same

And you have broken every single fucking rule
And I have loved you Like A Fool

  • This is one of the songs that Keira Knightley sings in the movie Begin Again. She plays Greta, a singer-songwriter who decamps for New York with her boyfriend when he lands a deal with a major label. "The songs weren't finished until two days before I had to record them in the studio. I had singing lessons and sang lots of scales to figure out what my range was and to strengthen my voice," she told The Express.

"Greta's not meant to like performing so that was quite helpful, it was part of the character, which was good because, with nerves, you generally just have to get rid of them because that's what your job is as an actor."

    Down In A Hole Lyrics

Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
    Holding rare flowers
    In a tomb, in bloom

Down In A Hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
    You don't understand who they
Thought I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
    Who won't let himself be

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
    I'd like to fly,
But my wings have been so denied

Down in a hole and they've put all
    The stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
    I have been guilty
Of kicking myself in the teeth
    I will speak no more
    Of my feelings beneath

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
I'd like to fly but my
    Wings have been so denied

Bury me softly in this womb
Oh I want to be inside of you
I give this part of me for you
Oh I want to be inside of you
Sand rains down and here I sit
    Holding rare flowers
(Oh I want to be inside of you)
    In a tomb, in bloom
Oh I want to be inside

Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, outta control
I'd like to fly but my

    Down In A Hole
  • Guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote this about the love of his life, Courtney Clarke. This song encompasses all of the insecurities and self-doubt inherent in a relationship.
  • With singer Layne Staley singing the lyrics, this could be seen as a foreshadowing of his death from a drug overdose. He had been fighting his addiction for years, and this song can be read as part of his struggle with that. (thanks Live Freak - Beirut, Lebanon)
  • This was released as a single with "Rooster," another song similar to it in style, in that they both feature harmonizing between Staley and Cantrell - the softer acoustic side of the band.
  • On most versions of the album, this is 4th on the track list. However, there are some versions on which it appears 12th, right before the album closer "Would?"
  • A version of this also appears on the Unplugged album that was recorded and released in 1996, after Alice In Chains' 3 year absence from live performances.

    Farm Life Lyrics

Yeah, you know I came up in a small town
Couple trees and a creek we could float down
Ain't much to see when you look around, just farms for miles
And you can find me ridin' round on some 33's
Cocked back kickin' dirt on my John D's
International harvestin' us some whole wheat
    Yeah let's take a ride

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Just livin' the Farm Life, yeah we're livin' the farm life
A little back road swagger that's how we roll
We plow it and we plant it and we drive it real slow
In the farm life, just livin' the farm life

We're waking up in the more before the sun does
Feed the cows and the chickens and the ducky ducks
Ain't got a lot but we got enough
Yeah, you know it's all about
Touchin' dirt with your bare hands
Fix it up taking care of your family
Wife it up become a family man
    Ooh, just settle down

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Just livin' the farm life, yeah we're livin' the farm life
It's county line simple don't complicate it,
Big city living no it's over rated
In the farm life, yeah livin' the farm life

Drink some shine get a little sauced
Get your girl, kick it back, kick your boots off
Maybe wake up in somebody's hay loft
Hehe, if you know what I mean (I do)
We could park out there on the tail gate
Talk about nothing till the day breaks
Amarillo By Morning by George Strait
Yeah, we got it on repeat!

Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Just livin' the farm life, yeah we're livin' the farm life
Out here we know how to treat a girl right
Take her by the hand and love her all night
In the farm life, just livin' the farm life

    Ohhh yeahhhhh!!!
Come on, come on, come on
Yeah we're living the farm life

  • This song finds Colt Ford duetting with Justin Moore. Ford told Billboard magazine he'd wanted to collaborate with the country star for a long time. "I think Justin Moore is the most underrated country singer in our genre, to be honest with you," he said. "He's one of the best out there. He and I have been friends for a while. We've been trying to do a song for the past two or three records, but just haven't found the right one. I think that one has a great melody, and it's perfect for us to do something about the farm."
  • This is one of the few songs on Thanks For Listening that Ford didn't write. It was composed by Clare Dunn, Blake Bollinger and Benjamin Caver. Dunn has performed as an opening act for Colt Ford.
  • In our interview with Colt Ford , he explained that growing up in Georgia, he could certainly relate to this song. "I know a lot about farm life," he said. "My dad grew up on a farm, and I grew up picking cotton and stuff. So I know that life, and I've spent a lot of time out there."

    What's Simple Is True Lyrics

You turn to me with frozen lips
    Your hands are icy cold
Your eyes burn bright against the frost-bit sky
You never seemed more lovely than you do tonight

    Pale on the horizon
Like leaves frozen in the snow
    Our two shadows merge inseparably
Will time stand still if it's pierced with cold

    The more I live
    The more I know
    What's Simple Is True
    I love you

There's a warmth in my heart
It haunts me when you're gone
Mend me to your side and never let go
Say time knows nothing, we'll never grow cold

    The more I live
    The more I know
    What's simple is true
    I love you

    Twilight descends on our silhouette
    How soon spring comes
    How soon spring forgets
I wanna hold time, say it'll never begin

Old man winter be our friend
Old man winter be our friend

You know the way it is
    These thoughts are Mutineers
Trying to shake the monkey off my back
    So beat the island drum
    And steady as she come
And all the stores are closing for the lack
To drink the damn place dry
    Only plan of attack
    And babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good
    This moving close
    This moving close
    Sure feels good babe

    And hey
    What could they know
    What could they know
    'Bout what we have
    Yeah what we have
    What could they know babe?

    The early warning signs
All lit up in my mind
    It’s true you know
Some things weren’t meant to be
    Until your secret’s out
    It’s your worst enemy

    And babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good
    This moving close
    This moving close
    Sure feels good babe

    And hey
    What could they know
    What could they know
    'Bout what we have
    Yeah what we have
    What could they know babe?

    Time is ours to burn
    Is ours to burn
    We got that glide
    That freewheel glide
    It’s ours to burn babe

    Oh babe
    Sure feels good
    Sure feels good

    Sure feels good babe, ooo

Kick off your shoes babe and move

    Mutineers
  • This is the title track of David Gray's Mutineers album. His collaborator and producer on the record was Andy Barlow, who is best known as one one half of Lamb, the British Electronica band of the '90s.

"His brief was – don't let me make the same record I've made before, take me out of my comfort zone," said Gray. "And he's a very gentle kind of guy, but courageous. He really took me on creatively in a way that no one else has ever done. So I thought, yeah, this is going to work, but it was a tortured process because I found it so hard to take at times that he would tear up bits of my work in front of my eyes!"

Till We Run Out Of Road Lyrics

Till We Run Out Of Road
  • Jewel wrote this with help from her boyfriend Ty Murray (they would get married in 2008 and divorce in 2014), who is a rodeo champion. The song describes the feeling of detachment that Murray's lifestyle entailed: he was constantly on the road and away from loved ones. This is a sentiment Jewel could relate to as well, as she had to give up some important aspects of her life when she became famous.
  • Ty Murray is credited as a songwriter on this track along with Jewel. She said that he came up with all the curse words and the line about beer.
  • The line, "The other day I talk to Lou, he quit back in '92," is about Lewis Field, a professional Bareback Rider in the PRCA circuit. (thanks, Mandi - Mesa, AZ)

    Gulls
  • This windswept album closer sums up Gray's approach to songwriting. "There's a yearning for removal from earthly stuff, you are in music, and gone," he told The Daily Telegraph. "That's how it feels to me, music is the land of the gulls, and the wind that blows through it is nobody's, you can't take ownership of it, it's just there, you have to surrender to it."
  • Here are some gull fun facts:

The herring gull's cry features in the opening of BBC Radio 4's long-running program Desert Island Discs.

Toronto police arrested Yankee outfielder Dave Winfield in 1983 for "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal" after Winfield threw a baseball during warm-ups and accidentally killed a seagull.

Students from Leicester University in England showed that 2,425,907 seagulls would have been needed to lift a giant peach, not 501 as in Roald Dahl's story.

A seagull drinks salt water because it has special glands that filter out the salt.
  • David Gray first came up with this song after coming off the road in 2011. "I sat down at the piano," he recalled to Artist Direct . "I started to get into some somber, moody chords. They sounded interesting. I started sketching a lyric. I said, "I don't want to make this dingy middle age music that vaguely moans about being alive. I want to be saying, 'Hallelujah' in a different way!"

Gray decided to approach Mutineers in a different way and began to work back from words into music. "It's the wrong way around for me," he said. "Usually, I go from the melody and rhythm into lyrics. In doing so, I had some interesting success. Then, I began to use other people's words."

This song came from a Belgian poem by Herman de Coninck called Just As This Island Belongs to the Gulls ."I took it downstairs, simplified it, and found a chord sequence that began to walk," Gray said. "I started to write. When I wrote the first line, it really got my attention. It was the s--t I was after. I was finding something new, and it was a major shard of light coming through."
  • Herman de Coninck (1944 - 1997) was the editor of the popular Belgian weekly radio and television magazine HUMO between 1970-83. His first volume of poetry, De Lenige Liefde, appeared in 1969, and became the best-selling volume of 20th-century Flemish poetry, winning several literary prizes. Just As This Island Belongs to the Gulls was translated into English by Laure-Anne Bosselaar and Kurt Brown in 2006.

Cutting through the darkest night are my two headlights
Try to keep it clear, but I'm losing it here
    To the twilight
There's a dead end to my left
There's a burning bush to my right
    You aren't in sight
    You aren't in sight

    Do you want me
    Like I want you
    Or am I Standing Still
    Beneath a darkened sky
    Or am I standing still
    With the scenery flying by
    Or am I standing still
Out of the corner of my eye
Was that you passing me by

    Mothers on the stoop
    Boys in souped-up coupes
    On this hot summer night
    Between fight and flight
    Is the blind man's sight
    And a choice that's right
    I roll the window down
Feel like I'm gonna drown in this strange town
    Feel broken down
    Feel broken down

    Do you need me
    Like I need you
    Or am I standing still
    Beneath a darkened sky
    Or am I standing still
    With the scenery flying by
    Or am I standing still
Out of the corner of my eye
Was that you passing me by

Sweet sorrow, he said call tomorrow
Sweet sorrow, he said call tomorrow

  • This song, co-written by Rick Nowels, means several things. It's about Jewel's music career standing still. Also, it's about her love life standing still because of her career. (thanks, Shawn - Loganville, GA)
  • Jewel's boyfriend, rodeo star Ty Murray, appeared in the video. While touring to support this album, Jewel took some time off at Murray's ranch in Texas, where she was thrown from a horse and badly injured, breaking a rib and her collar bone. She resumed her tour ahead of schedule, but still missed about a month.
  • This was heavily promoted on the AOL Music channel as the service launched their "Artist Of The Month" feature with Jewel. AOL users downloaded the video over 300,000 times in October, 2001.
  • This was featured on the TV series Bates Motel in the 2013 episode "Nice Town You Picked Norma..." It was also used on the 2001 Smallville episode "Cool."
  • All of Jewel's previous singles were re-worked with new arrangements, vocals, or other edits for radio release, but this track was the first to retain its album format.

I ain't afraid of the dark
I ain't worried about the savages loose in the night
But you show me the things I've done
And girl you know I get the chills all down my crooked spine
    Kill the lights
    I've seen too much
If so below, then as above
    Lord knows I've seen enough
It's crystal clear and uglier than I thought
    Desperate and lonely juggernauts

Illuminate the filth with the glow of your righteous heart
Shine a light upon the world
And i'll scurry back to the dark
    Lights on, rats out
Somebody turn on the light, keep the rest down
The uppers lower me into the hive
The lights are low us weeds come alive
Downers pick me up into the ditch
I cannot scratch this never-ending itch
Salvation is a hell of a thing

Pull the dust up over your eyes
I don't believe I'll have a revelation with all these secrets of mine
And if I ever have a holy vision
It's going to be two at a time
I got so much soul in me that I'm barely alive
I've been down and out for so long baby I can't be revived
I ain't afraid to be long lost
I ain't bothered by the silence, the cold, or the roads that stretch for miles
But you show me the man I've become
And girl you know I want to tie up a rope and crack my crooked spine
    Kill the lights
    I've seen too much

  • "Thirst," the first single of From Parts Unknown, came with a video of two dudes tearing their way through the city of Buffalo. This song's music clip stretches out the pair's story from where the previous visual left off. "I want to incorporate them into f--king everything," vocalist Keith Buckley told Noisecreep . "The crazy thing is, they never knew each other. They knew of each other, just from being around Buffalo, it's a small town. But they met that day and it was like soul mates. They're now really good friends and that chemistry they have is for real."

    La Villa Strangiato Lyrics

    La Villa Strangiato
  • Despite being an instrumental, the song tells a complete story, complete with plot and characters. It's based on some nightmares Alex Lifeson experienced. (thanks, Matthew Daubert - Mequon, WI)
  • Divided into 12 segments, as follows: I-- Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds!, II-- To Sleep, Perchance To Dream, III-- Strangiato Theme, IV-- A Lerxst in Wonderland, V-- Monsters!, VI-- The Ghost of the Aragon, VII-- Danforth and Pape, VIII-- The Waltz of the Shreves, IX-- Never Turn Your Back on a Monster!, X-- Monsters! (Reprise), XI- Strangiato Theme (Reprise), XII-- A Farewell To Things.
  • One of the few songs on which drummer Neil Peart is credited with writing some of the music. He is usually only credited with writing lyrics.
  • The live version of this song, from the CD Exit... Stage Left contains some nonsensical lyrics in the "Danforth and Pape" segment. The CD flyer contains a "loose translation" of these lyrics.
  • On the live CD and DVD Rush In Rio , Alex Lifeson delivers a comedy monologue during the "Monsters! (Reprise)" section. Geddy Lee ceases playing this song during this segment and begins briefly playing the song "The Girl From Ipanema" in response to one of Alex's jokes. (thanks, Jeff - Haltom City, TX, for all above)
  • "Danforth and Pape" is an intersection in downtown Toronto. It is well known for being somewhat chaotic during 'rush hour.' (thanks, Alexander - Bracebridge, Canada)
  • The song that inspired the "Monsters!" section was the 1936 song "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. Warner Brothers music director Carl Stalling used "Powerhouse" in his Warner Brothers cartoon scores during the '40s and '50s. The music wasn't originally written for cartoons, publishing rights for a limited catalog of Raymond Scott's titles were sold to Warner Brothers in 1943. Yet not only was "Powerhouse" used in the old "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons, it has been sampled more recently by other bands such as Devo and They Might Be Giants; more recently cartoons including The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Duckman, Batfink and Animaniacs, also the Cartoon Network's theme song, and throughout the Disney film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids! (without crediting Scott - Disney was threatened with a lawsuit and the matter was settled out of court). Rush didn't give credit to Scott for their use of "Powerhouse" either. By the time Raymond Scott's publisher notified the band's management of the infringement, the statute of limitations had expired on the challenge. But Rush's management, out of deference to Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Raymond was still alive at that point), and being the class act that they are, offered a one-time "penance" payment, feeling it was the ethical thing to do. All involved were happy with the resolution, and Rush has no further financial obligations. Under the settlement, they were not required to accord Raymond Scott partial songwriting credit on the piece. For additional information visit FAQ at RaymondScott.com. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)
  • Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. It was the home of the late Barone (Baron) Strangiato, an Italian nobleman, but it is not a major Italian landmark. (thanks, FranZ - Rome, Italy)
