Back In The Village

One of the band's musical adaptations of the old BBC television series, The Prisoner. "The Village" was the name of the prison in this Patrick McGoohan series. (thanks, Jeff - Haltom City, TX)

Layered over the line "I see sixes all the way" is a whisper, which is apparently singer Bruce Dickinson saying the number 666. It is a reference to the first album that featured Dickinson on vocals, The Number of the Beast.

Bruce Dickinson, a licensed pilot and airplane fan, inserted much pilot terminology in here (he did the same in "Aces High" and "Tailgunner"). For example: "Take your chances, kill the engine, drop your bombs and let them burn" and "In a black hole, and I'm spinning, as my wings get shot away." There is also the line "There's a fox among the chickens," which some have interpreted as a reference to guided missiles (a radar guided missile= "fox 1", infrared guided air to air missile= "fox 2", etc.) A Napalm missile is a "fox six", hence, "I see sixes all the way." Diamond In The Witch House

Neurosis lead singer Scott Kelly returns for his fifth cameo with Mastodon, singing on this 7-minute album closer. Bassist Troy Sanders commented to Kerrang! magazine: "He's been on other albums of ours, but the part he does on this gives me absolute chills when I listen to it."

Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor told Exclaim! magazine that Scott Kelly picked the song. "He gravitated to that more," Dailor said. "He basically said, 'I love this track, I'm feeling it, I can kill this one.' So we said 'have at it, go kill it' and he did."

Mastodon described the song in the press release as focusing on "the fragility of responsibility."

Lovett describes this as "An attempt at the narrative murder ballad."

Many classic Country songs recount tales of murder, like Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." At this point, Lovett was still being marketed as Country, so this fit with his image.

This Jazz-flecked Put Your Needle Down track was written by The Secret Sisters with Bob Dylan. Laura Rogers of the duo recalled to Uncut magazine: "It's such a crazy thing, part of me still doesn't believe it happened. We'd just about finished most of the record when T Bone (Burnett) said 'Bob has sent over some demos for you.' He just said 'Bob,' no surname, so at first we didn't realize who he was talking about."

Dylan started work on this song in the '80s but never finished it. A fan of the sisters' eponymous debut, he gave the demo to producer T-Bone Burnett. "The melody was written, the demo has him humming along to what he wanted it to be, and the lyrical hook 'whosever told you told a dirty lie' was already there," Laura Rogers recalled to Uncut. "It was an honor to be invited to complete it but incredibly nerve-wracking."

The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, Elton's writing partner. He explained the inspiration on his web site: "I'd seen this article in Time magazine on the Tet Offensive. And there was a sidebar next to it with a story about how many of the soldiers that were coming back from 'Nam were these simple sort of down home country guys who were generally embarrassed by both the adulation and, depending on what part of the country you came from, the animosity that they were greeted by. For the most part, they just wanted to get back to a normal life, but found it hard, what with all the looky loos and the monkeys of war that they carried on their backs.

I just took it from there and wrote it from a younger brother's perspective; made him disabled and wanting to get away. I made it Spain, basically, because it rhymes with plane."

When Elton wrote the music for this song, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. The deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam Vet who returned home to the farm after the war, couldn't find peace, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of two brothers who part ways, although Bernie Taupin says that losing the verse wasn't a big deal.

Said Taupin: "We had that whole thing about the missing verse that everybody seems to believe explained the true meaning of the song. I think that's just an urban legend. It didn't really explain anything. Sure, it was cut out. But that used to happen all the time with our songs. I would often overwrite, and Elton felt it necessary to edit somewhat. But believe me, it didn't say anything that the rest of the song didn't say."

This was written and recorded the same day at the the Chateau d'Herouville in France (the "Honky Chateau"), where Elton and his team retreated to make the album. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics one morning at the recording studio and brought them downstairs to Elton, who put music to it and recorded it with the band that day.

Stowing away to France was Elton's way of entering a creative environment free from distractions - there was no entourage and no phones. The Chateau could even keep the Black Knight at bay, as it was surrounded by a moat.

The result was part a very productive songwriting period for Taupin and John, who composed 12 songs over a four-day period, including "Daniel."

Elton called this song "a calypso-type number with Everley Brothers-type harmonies."

The record company didn't want to release this as a single because they thought it was too long and somber to be a hit. Elton had other ideas, and insisted they release it as a single before the album came out. The record company did, but with very little promotion. It became a hit anyway.

According to Elton John: The Definitive Biography , here's how the album got its title: While in Los Angeles, Elton was introduced to the legendary comedian Groucho Marx. They hit it off, but Groucho was always giving Elton a hard time about his name, insisting that he must have it backwards and really be John Elton. After Groucho refused to lay off the name thing at a party, Elton threw up his hands and said jokingly: "Don't shoot me, I'm just the piano player."

Bernie Taupin has told a different story, claiming that he found the phrase on a plaque at an American junk shop.

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon penned this song for the soundtrack to Zach Braff's movie, Wish I Was Here. Speaking to NPR, the film's music supervisor Mary Ramos said she screened a rough-cut of the flick for Vernon and his brother Nate in their living room. "They were enjoying it and laughing, but at a certain point, they just got quiet," she said. "When it was over, Justin started humming."

"We talked afterwards about the relationship between Zach's character and his brother [Josh Gad], and Justin and Nate talked a little about their father - all the while Justin kept distractedly humming," Ramos continued. "Eventually, he sang out the words 'heavenly father.' Before I even left their house, Justin was recording the first version of the song in his downstairs studio. His inspiration was that immediate."

Also included on the Wish I Was Here soundtrack is "Holocene," a track from Bon Iver's self-titled 2011 album.

To Tame A Land

Based on the science fiction novel Dune, which was later made into a movie. Author Frank Herbert refused to allow the band to call this song "Dune." The band originally sent a letter to Herbert's agent for permission. The response read as follows: "No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden."

Songwriter Steve Harris tried to convince Herbert that the song would be a good promo for the book, but he still refused.

Steve Harris often bases his compositions on works by other artists.

The song contains many seemingly senseless words, including "Fremen," "Caladan," "gom jabbar" and "Muad'Dib." All of these were derived from the science fiction novel Dune, and make sense in the context of the story. Singer Bruce Dickinson did, understandably, mispronounce some of these words. On the back of the Somewhere in Time album, there is a "Herbert Ails" advertisement. This is a reference to the author of Dune.

Steve Harris: "This is the best song I've ever written. I was really pleased with Phantom, but now I have to say that this is the best."

Lead singer Bruce Dickinson referred to Frank Herbert as "a bit of a cu-t" because "among other things, he said that if we called this track that we wrote on the album 'Dune,' that he'd sue us and stop the album coming out, and all kinds of very unpleasant things." Dickinson made these remarks at a concert in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 5th, 1983.

At one point, Steve Harris wanted to start the song with a spoken quote from Dune.

This synthy slow burner finds Brown attempting to convince a girl to embark on a relationship with him after meeting her in a club. The song was debuted by the singer at the 2014 BET Awards on June 29, 2014. It was his first performance after spending two and a half months in prison, as a result of getting involved in a fight outside a hotel in Washington DC.

Usher and Rick Ross both contribute verses to the track. Brown and Rozay had collaborated multiple times before on songs like DJ Khaled's "Take It To The Head" and the remix of his own tune "Deuces," but this was the first time he'd worked with Usher.

Ross' closing verse has a baseball theme with references to the late New York Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, and famous Yankee players Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter and Yogi Berra.

Teddy Boy

Teddy Boy was a term used throughout the UK. A "Teddy Boy" or "Ted" was a term used to describe a young man who looked and acted like a punk. All of The Beatles, and John Lennon in particular, were accused of being "Teddy Boys" in the early days of the band.

McCartney wrote this during The Beatles' stay in India in March 1968. At the urging of George Harrison, they went on the trip to learn transcendental meditation from the Maharishi, who was considered a spiritual guru. The trip didn't go well, but several songs came out of it. John Lennon wrote "Revolution," "Dear Prudence," and "Sexy Sadie" either in India or as a result of the trip.

Set Me On Fire

The lead single from Flyleaf's Between The Stars album, the explosive track hit rock and alternative radio formats on July 7, 2014. "It's about the passion we feel when we first fall in love and our emotions are running high, along with our thirst for this great life and all it has to offer," explained lead vocalist Kristen May. "There is so much beauty, excitement and hope in this world and when we collide with one another and fall in love, magic happens. I hope everyone turns this song up to eleven, and sings at the top of their lungs."

The song's music video was shot with director Noel Maitland (Speechless, Kings of Summer) in an abandoned warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. The Flyleaf band members felt that their first visual with new singer Kristen May should be a fairly straightforward performance clip. "We have tried to do all these narrative videos in the past, and they never really translated. The ideas were always a little convoluted," guitarist Sameer Bhattacharya told Billboard magazine. "I think for our first video with Kristen, we wanted it to be just a performance video to show everyone that this is what it is. I think it was a great move."

Flyleaf found inspiration for the lyrics within a rather unconventional place. "Pat (Seals, bass), Kristen, and I had just finished reading Veronica Roth's Divergent," recalled Bhattacharya. "Something in the story resonated with us. It's that moment of finding yourself."

Bang Bang

This powerhouse anthem was released as the lead single from Jessie J's third album. It finds her linking up with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj. The song was made available on July 29, 2014 through Republic Records.

The song was produced by Max Martin, Savan Kotecha and Ilya. The same trio also worked on Grande's hit single "Problem."

The song can also be found on the deluxe edition of Grande's My Everything album.

Jessie J said she is is elated about how the song came together, as she'd wanted to work with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj for a while. "Max Martin and I got the song and I was like, 'I have to record this'," she recalled.

"I put my vocal down and then Ariana heard it and she was like, 'I wanna put a verse on it.' Then Nicki heard it and, I mean, I had tried to get Nicki on 'Do It Like A Dude'... I didn't know if she was really going to do it," she added. "And then they sent me a verse and I cried."

Jessie J only met Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj after the song hit #1 on iTunes. She explained on the July 30, 2014 episode of Boston 103.3 AMP Radio's The TJ Show: "Sadly, it's very rare to actually ever meet someone that you record a song with, because usually when you want someone that's successful and great, they're very rarely available, so we actually meet for the first time in the morning."

"I fly to LA in about two hours to shoot the video tomorrow so, we have yet to meet," she added. "So what a great to way to meet and be like 'Yo, wassup! Yeah we got a #1 song on iTunes!'"

According to Jessie J, Max Martin's intention was to create a sort of girl band to perform the song as opposed to featuring girls.

There are three verses on this song, which is one more than most pop songs. It works because Minaj takes the third verse, providing a different voice and raising the energy level right at the point where the listener is likely to start losing interest.

Jessie explained the song to Radio.com as, "being a moment of empowering women and a song that gets you on your feet."

"I started it first, then Ariana jumped on and then Nicki jumped on," she added. "It kind of became what it is right now: a moment, a party."

Asked about the song's meaning by Spin magazine, Jessie J replied: "'Bang Bang' basically represents what it did back in the day when you were little. It was just a word that kind of is explosive. Like, 'BANG BANG! Pour me a beer!'"

"It's like a Do It Like A Dude mentality," she added; "it doesn't really mean anything in particular. It's not violent. It's just a very in-your-face, catchy phrase. It's like 'Stomp stomp!' or 'Pow pow!' It's edgy and you can kinda take what you want from it."

The song's music video was shot over two days in Los Angeles and directed by Hannah Lux Davis (Lil Wayne's "Love Me," Jason Derulo's "Marry Me"). Balancing three divas in one clip was no easy task for the director. "Politically, we had to make sure everybody had the proper amount of screen time and attention," Davis recalled to Billboard magazine.
