Will.i.am collaborated with Cody Wise for this Bollywood inspired track. The American recording artist is signed to Interscope Records through The Black Eyed Pea leader's imprint. The song was released on May 27, 2014 after will.i.am previwed it on Alan Carr's UK Chatty Man show on April 6th.

Will.i.am wrote the tune with Cody Wise and Keith Harris (Madonna, Robin Thicke). The intro and outro is heavily based on the Tamil song "Urvasi Urvasi", originally composed by A. R. Rahman. "I fell in love with the song and wanted to interpret it," Will.i.am told Jimmy Fallon in a Tonight Show exclusive. "We took portions of that song and put it over today's thick, urban electronic-type beat."

The single was originally named 'Birthday' but it was changed to 'It's My Birthday' to avoid confusion with the Katy Perry song of the same title.

The song borrows from the popular Jamaican songs "Pull Up To Mi Bumper" by Konshens & J Capri and "Fi Di Jockey" by Aidonia, giving it a dancehall vibe. The tune also samples Bounty Killer chanting "Big Ship Sailing."

This was will.i.am's tenth #1 on the UK singles chart. He'd previously achieved five chart-toppers as a member of Black Eyed Peas, two under his own name, and was a featured artist on Usher's "OMG" and The Script's "Hall Of Fame."

Will.i.am sings about living every day as if it's your birthday. "You get a license to do whatever you want on your birthday," he explained. "I try to live in that celebrative, who-gives-a-f perspective and celebrate every day as if it was my birthday."

Hit Or Miss

In one version of the song there is brief dialogue at the beginning. The lines the person says are from the book The Outsiders, which was adapted into a movie in 1983. Steve Klein (guitar) told Kerrang! magazine February 16, 2008: "It's one of the first songs that we ever wrote that was in the direction that we ended up going." This Progressive House track features the rugged rock star voice of Sting. Asked by MTV UK how the former Police frontman got involved on the cut, Afrojack replied. "Despite popular belief, I regularly listen to classic pop and rock songs and I'm a big fan of Sting's music. Electronic music really matches up with the right attitude, in my opinion."

The St. Matthew Passion was a musical composition written by Bach for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra. It set chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music, with interspersed chorales and arias.

The music video features a giant snake being driven through city streets. Cellist Grace Chatto told HMV.com : "We spent months making the video, because Jack (Patterson, bass guitar and keyboards) made the gold snake from scratch and made it move around London."

Cologne

This song features the voices of Javeon and Nikki Cislyn. Clean Bandit met the latter vocalist through the group's studio space which is part of a council project in London where they take on trainees in music production from the local area. Cellist Grace Chatto told HMV.com : "Some of the trainees we had turned out to be incredible singers, Nikki Cislyn came to us that way, she's on three songs on the album and she's now writing for other people."

Clean Bandit wrote this with Nikki Cislyn and Nigerian-descended production whiz Uzoechi Emenike (a.k.a. MNEK), who scored his first UK #1 hit in April 2013 as a co-writer on Duke Dumont and AME's club anthem "Need U (100%)." The song deals with the theme of being in a club.

This launched one of the most famous rivalries in rap history. During the recording of the song, Canibus used the lyric "Yo L, is that mic on your arm? Let me borrow that," referencing the tattoo of a microphone on LL Cool J's arm. This comment offended LL Cool J, who had the line from Canibus removed from the song, but used his verse on the song to launch an angry assault at Canibus, opening with the line "When young sons fantasize of borrowing flows, tell little shorty with the big mouth the bank is closed". Canibus retaliated by recording "Second Round Knock Out." LL Cool J followed that up with his own retaliation on "The Ripper Strikes Back," which also took shots at Canibus' mentor at the time, Wyclef Jean. Wyclef responded with "What's Clef Got To Do With It," to which LL Cool J retaliated with "Rasta Imposta." Of all these songs, only "Second Round Knock Out" by Canibus was commercially released, while the rest made their way through the hip-hop underground.

LL Cool J wrote this song about staying on top of the rap game. It was one of the first rap hits to use lots of artillery imagery, with bombs, shotguns and a 9mm pistol showing up in the rather bellicose lyric.

LL's lyrics are purely metaphorical, but around this time real violence within the hip-hop community was becoming a major problem. With the rise of "gangsta" rap, similar lyrics were often far more literal, depicting real-life events and credible threats.

This won the Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

LL Cool J performed this on the MTV acoustic showcase Unplugged when he became the first rapper to appear on the show.

New Eyes

The title track of Clean Bandit's debut album was written in a place in France called Nouailles. Cellist Grace Chatto recalled: "No one was quite sure how to pronounce it and our manager nicknamed it as 'New Eyes', which stuck... It's the most personal song on the album, so we gave the album the same title."

The song features the voices of Clean Bandit bass guitarist and keyboardist Jack Patterson as well as US rapper Lizzo.

The Post War Dream

The album was dedicated to Roger Waters' father, Eric Fletcher Waters, who died in WW2 at the battle of the Anzio bridge. (thanks, Lee - Durham, NC)

Anzio was a beach on the coast of Italy stormed mainly by the British (thus the lyric "The Anzio beachhead was held at the price of a few hundred ornery lives."). "Maggie" is Margaret Thatcher, who was the prime minister when the song was written (Winston Churchill was PM of England in WW2). "Tell me true, tell me why was Jesus crucified" was just Waters searching for some justification for his father being taken from him (also see "Was it you? Was it me? Did I watch too much TV?"). Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright was not on this album. He was kicked out of the band by Waters right before the release of The Wall. Many people say The Final Cut is a Roger Waters solo album.
