The New York Times Lyrics

Here comes the rain

Once I was searchin'
For somethin' to change my ways
Clouds - they came rollin'
And from the thunder I heard them say

[Chorus]
The rain wizard will wash our hands
Bring magic to our land
The rain wizard will do it again
Bring magic to our land

Hair strung like silver
And the moons - they lit his robe
His boots - they are leading
To a path that no one knows

[Chorus]

Here comes the Rain Wizard

The New York Times
  • Lead singer Art Alexakis wrote this about politics and events going on in America. It ties in the economy, the presidential election of 2000, and the September 11 attacks. He was also moved by the story of Laci Peterson, a pregnant woman who was found dead in California, and by an adoption law in Florida that has since been overturned. The law required any woman who did not know the paternity of her baby and wanted to give it up for adoption to buy ads in newspapers announcing her sexual past so the father could be found and have a say in the adoption. Known as "The Scarlet Letter Law," it gave custody to biological fathers regardless of their background, which could be disastrous for the child. Art has little patience for fathers who don't care for their kids. He made this clear in the song "Father Of Mine."
  • Alexakis: "These things in the last couple of years have made me pissed off at the complacency in our country. I think there's a lot of darkness there, but I think we can do better, that there's light at the end of the tunnel."
  • The New York Times is the only newspaper Art really likes. He says they "have the balls to stand apart from a lot of the more conservative papers," although he was disappointed with their coverage of the war in Iraq.
  • When it comes to politics, Alexakis will express his views when asked, but doesn't use the stage as a soapbox, which got The Dixie Chicks in trouble around the time this was released. At a concert in London, one of the chicks said, "We're ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas." The quote was printed by a British newspaper and The Dixie Chicks were quickly banned by many country radio stations and labeled "unpatriotic." Even though they expressed support for US troops and apologized for the remark, their album sales declined sharply and some radio stations organized events to destroy their albums.
  • This is the last song listed on the CD, but a minute after it ends, there is a hidden song called "White Noise." Alexakis describes it as "A song about pure acceptance or love of a friend." He included it as a hidden song because he wanted it on the CD, but it didn't fit the sequence of the album. He feels it helps end the album on a positive note. Holding On…To Letting Go
  • This song was inspired by a rough time that the band went through in 2013. Vocalist Chris Robertson recalled to Artist Direct : "It all came back to a lot of things I was dealing with in terms of my anxiety, severe depression, and prescription addictions. That song is the story of the hell the band went through to get to where we're at today. I went to walking out of my house with a loaded shotgun to finding God and living a life that's completely different from what I was used to."

"My favorite line in that song is, 'Black clouds turn to blue and crucified like the truth,'" he added. "I don't think a song has ever name-checked Jesus like that. It's pretty awesome, man."

    Wonderful Lyrics

I close my eyes when I get too sad
I think thoughts that I know are bad
Close my eyes and I count to ten
Hope it's over when I open them

I want the things that I had before
Like a Star Wars poster on my bedroom door
I wish I could count to ten
    Make everything be Wonderful again

Hope my mom and I hope my dad
Will figure out why they get so mad
Hear them scream, I hear them fight
Say bad words that make me want to cry

Close my eyes when I go to bed
And I dream of angels that make me smile
I feel better when I hear them say
    Everything will be wonderful someday

Promises mean everything when you're little
    And the world's so big
    I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
Tell me everything is wonderful now

(Na na na na na na na)

Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I go to school and I run and play
I tell the kids that it's all okay
I like to laugh so my friends won't know
When the bell rings I just don't want to go home

Go to my room and I close my eyes
I make believe that I have a new life
I don't believe you when you say
    Everything will be wonderful someday

Promises mean everything when you're little
And the world is so big
    I just don't understand how
You can smile with all those tears in your eyes
When you tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you say
    That I will understand someday
    No, no, no, no
I don't want to hear you say
We both have grown in a different way
    No, no, no, no
I don't want to meet your friends
And I don't want to start over again
I just want to my life to be the same
Just like it used to be
    Some days I hate everything
    I hate everything
    Everyone and everything
Please don't tell me everything is wonderful now

I don't want to hear you tell me everything is wonderful now

    Wonderful
  • Lead singer Art Alexakis wrote this from a child's perspective. He was dealing with a recent divorce and the effect it had on his daughter, Anna. He says, "I was a child of a broken marriage, my daughter was the child of a broken marriage, and it was hard to watch it happen to her. That was me trying to make sense of it."
  • Alexakis: "It's one of those songs where I take my experiences as a kid, some experiences of some friends of mine, and kind of put myself into this kid's place. It's not really autobiographical but it's coming from a place that I understand very well. My characters tend to have aspects of my personality. It wouldn't be real if it didn't have a part of my reality."
  • Along with "Father Of Mine" and "Santa Monica," Alexakis considers this one of his most personal songs. He used to think these kind of songs were too serious and intense to be hits, but has found they strike chords with people and do very well. (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)

    Remember Me Lyrics

    Smoke another cigarette
Reminisce on a girl I met
Watch another day pass me bye
A country road that takes me home
The only place that I've ever known
I sure do love that Rocky Mountain sky

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on
Hey, Merle Haggard I know what you mean
When you say sing me back home

Got my wheels stretched out on a road
Them yellow lines that free my soul
Mama always said that I was born to roam
    Headed down the highway
    Livin' life the free way
Today I'm here but tomorrow I'm gone

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on
Hey, Merle Haggard I know what you mean
When you say sing me back home

    I've smoked another cigarette
Reminisced on the girls I've met
Watched another day pass me bye

Just like the seasons I'm gonna change
Like the clouds I'm rollin' on

    Remember Me
  • Lead vocalist Chris Robertson wrote this Magic Mountain track for his late grandpa. He recalled to Artist Direct ; "When we started doing pre-production on this album, Joe Barresi flew in on a Sunday. My grandfather had been in the hospital. He was my mom's dad. He was there, and he wasn't given a very good chance. He actually passed away the Sunday that Joe flew in. We were doing pre-production. We only had five days to do any work on the songs before we went to the studio."

"Wednesday was my Grandpa's funeral.," Robertson continued. "We worked all night on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, I decided instead of sitting around the house and having a pity party I'd rather record with the guys. We sat around, and it was obvious I didn't want to work on any of the songs we had written. I didn't want to deal with any of that s--t. I tuned my guitar a little funny, and I started playing the intro part. It came to me right off the top of my head. There was the intro riff and the verse."

"We wrote the music for that song in about fifteen or twenty minutes," he added. "I went outside and sat down. They were jamming on that verse. I pulled my phone out and wrote some notes. I started typing. When I finished my cigarette, I said, 'Why don't you guys check this out? I think it could be cool.' That was the day of my grandpa's funeral, and it was a song for him. They were working class people who lived a simple way of life. They never had a lot, but they made do with what they've had. I love that song. It really means a lot to me."

I Will Buy You A New Life Lyrics

Here is the money that I owe you
Yes you can pay the bills
    I will give you more
    When I get paid again

I hate those people who love to tell you
Money is the root of all that kills
    They have never been poor
They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas

I know we will never look back

You say you wake up crying
Yes and you don't know why
You get up and you go lay down
    Inside my baby's room

Yeah, I guess I'm doing OK
I moved in with the strangest guy
Can you believe he actually thinks
    That I am really alive

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I Will Buy You A New Life
    Yes I will

Yes, I know all about that other guy
The handsome man with athletic thighs
I know about all the time before
With that obsessive little rich boy

They might make you think you're happy
Yeah maybe for a minute or two
    They can't make you laugh
No they can't make you feel the way that I do

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I know we can never look back

Will you please let me stay the night
Will you please let me stay the night
    No one will ever know

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a garden
    Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
    Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house

I Will Buy You A New Life
  • This is a personal song written by lead singer Art Alexakis. When his daughter Anna was a baby, he and his ex-wife would go to a wealthy neighborhood in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon. They would look at the fancy houses, drive around and fantasize about living there. One day, after the success of Everclear, Art bought one of those houses and moved into the neighborhood.
  • Alexakis: "It wasn't about the money, it was about a different kind of life, giving all of yourself to another person. It's the ultimate romantic song to me." (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)

    Human Lyrics

    Lonely, lonely
So you think that you know me
You’re the only one who knows who I am
I decided tonight that I’m breaking
All the chains on my throne of perfection
Could it be that easy to let it all go

    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold
Everything you think is perfect, oh
    Isn’t always so
Many times many times I would've let my feelings show
    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold
You know I’m just Human, human, human after all
You know I’m just human, human, human after all

    Slowly, slowly
    I’m okay in revealing
Scars you see I wear them proud in the end
I decided tonight that I’m wasting
Too much thought on the art of perception
Could it be that easy to let it all go

    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold
Everything you think is perfect, oh
    Isn’t always so
Many times many times I would've let my feelings show
    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold

You know I’m just tired of the weight of the world on my shoulders
Babe, you know I’m sick of always carrying it for you
Used to be a superwoman now that’s over, over
    I’m a lover, I’m a lover, baby, I’m a soldier
Doesn’t mean that I could be everything for you
Used to be a superwoman now that’s over, over

    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold
Everything you think is perfect, oh
    Isn’t always so
Many times many times I would've let my feelings show
    Everything you see that glitters
    Isn’t always gold
You know I’m just human, human, human after all

    Human
  • This is one of several tracks on Sorry I'm Late that finds Cher Lloyd getting raw, vulnerable and emotional. Speaking on MTV Live, she credited the desire to show off that side of her to just growing up and being comfortable in her own skin. "I would say that you go through many different things growing up and the thing for me, is I just figured out who I was that was the biggest issue for me," Lloyd said. "Because when you live in this kind of world, in this present time it feels like everyone else is making the decision for you."

"This is what you are meant to look like because it's in this magazine, or your hair should be like because it's the top rated hair style of the year, bull. It took me a while to figure it out."
  • This was written by the Nashville songwriters Robert Marvin and Catt Gravitt, who had previously teamed up to write the Kelly Clarkson song "Honestly." In our interview with Gravitt , she explained the inspiration for the lyric: "I was going through a time of making mistakes, which is very uncomfortable for somebody like me. As a songwriter, you end up writing all of these broken songs that come from that kind of a place. And that song is very, very personal."
  • The song's writers were intimately involved in recording the track, with Robert Marvin producing and Catt Gravitt serving as vocal producer. This meant that Gravitt could coach Lloyd while she was doing her track, helping her connect with the lyric. "There were a couple of times where I was telling Cher, 'I'm just not feeling it'," Gravitt told us. "Stop singing the melody, and sing me the lyric."

I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game

With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
I will try and shake away this disease

    [Chorus: x2]
We can live beside the ocean
    Leave the fire behind
    Swim out past the breakers
    Watch the world die

I am still dreaming of you face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away
I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fall-back crutch anymore

Insane and rising in my own weird way
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore

I just want to feel some sunshine
I just want to find some place to be alone

    Santa Monica
  • Santa Monica is a seaside town in California where Everclear lead singer Art Alexakis grew up. He describes it as "Like LA, but on the coast." The warm weather, beaches and palm trees serve as iconic references in the song, as Alexakis explains: "I've lived in cold places and been in bad relationships, and I think everybody has a place in their mind that is like a safe haven. It's also about getting away from bad times... the ending of something is also the beginning of something new, whether it's with someone or getting out of a bad job, a bad way of life or an abusive relationship."
  • Alexakis: "In the Eastern way of looking at things, 'Chaos' doesn't necessarily mean no boundaries, it means new beginnings. It's kind of one and the same, something that never ends. It's about getting to a point where you can leave bad things behind and just be self sufficient. There's a sense of romance about it. I feel like that very much now, but I was just getting to where I understood that when I wrote that song." (Check out our interview with Art Alexakis.)
  • On their 2003 tour, the band would pick an audience member to play guitar on this song. If that person didn't play well, he would get kicked off stage and replaced with someone else from the crowd.

    Shotgun Wedding
  • Jamie Lynn Spears came to prominence as a teenager when she portrayed the titular character Zoey Brooks in the Nickelodeon television series Zoey 101. However, in 2007, the sixteen-year-old generated controversy after announcing her pregnancy, before giving birth to daughter Maddie Aldridge the following year. This uptempo rocker finds Jamie Lynn recounting finding out about her pregnancy in a gas-station bathroom and her ensuing quick engagement to then-boyfriend, Casey Aldridge. (They never actually got married).
  • Spears wrote the track with Chris Tompkins (Florida Georgia Line, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood) in 2008 or 2009. She cites it as one first songs she ever wrote and represents the beginning stage of her music career. Spears told Billboard magazine: "When I moved to Nashville, and was in a writing room with different writers, 'Shotgun Wedding' was one of the first songs we came up with. Chris says 'If that's what happened, you can sing it.' That made me feel so great – to be myself and who I am.' It makes me proud."

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves

Inside my shell, I Wait and Bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

I wipe it off on tile, the light is brighter this time
    Everything is 3D blasphemy
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up
This is not the way I pictured me
    I can't control my shakes
How the hell did I get here?
Something about this, so very wrong
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this
Is it a dream or a memory?

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Get outta my head 'cause I don't need this
    Why I didn't I see this?
    I'm a victim, Manchurian candidate
    I have sinned by just
Makin' my mind up and takin' your breath away

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

    You haven't learned a thing
    I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
    The pain was always free

    You haven't learned a thing
    I haven't changed a thing

    Wait and Bleed
  • This is about a man who keeps having repetitive black and white dreams about laying in a bathtub full of his own blood with his wrists slit. One day he wakes up and sees that his dream has become a reality, but he doesn't want to believe it and he tries to fall back asleep again.
  • On the Digipack of their self-titled release, there is a remix of the song mixed by Terry Date. This is the version usually played by radio stations. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) told us about this track: "It was just a basic song. We didn't know it was going to be that popular. The funny thing is the record label, especially new guys at the record label, were coming around when we started getting big, and they're like, 'Oh, the next record you can write like three Wait And Bleeds.' And we're just like, You are an idiot. Therefore, we don't do that. But obviously the band, believe it or not, we have so much control over what we do that we don't write anything for money, we don't write anything for popularity, we have to like it first. And it's just a song that we liked, and it just so happened that it got on the radio and got the attention that we didn't expect." (Check out our interview with Chris Fehn.)
  • In the lyrics when Corey says, "I am a victim, a Manchurian Candidate!," he is referring to a movie from 1962 about communist mind control. (thanks, Stu - Dayton, OH)
  • The picture on the album cover was taken in Shawn Crahan's parents' garage. (thanks, Sean - York, SC)
  • Thomas Mignone directed the video. His other credits include "Death Blooms" and "Dig" for Mudvayne and "Dress Like a Target" for Superjoint Ritual.

    Money
  • Over a thumping Hit-Boy beat, this song finds Mariah singing about how money isn't that important to her. "He is a favorite of mine," Carey told MTV News of Hit-Boy (Kanye West and Jay Z's "Niggas in Paris"). "We really got it together and had philosophical conversations about music in general."
  • Mariah is joined by rapper Fabolous on this anti-materialistic R&B jam.

    Dreaming Lyrics

When I met you in the restaurant you could tell I was no debutante.
You asked me what's my pleasure, "A movie or a measure"?
I'll have a cup of tea and tell you of my dreamin'
    Dreamin' is free.
    Dreamin', Dreaming is free.

I don't want to live on charity.
Pleasure's real or is it fantasy?
Reel to reel is living verite.
People stop and stare at me, we just walk on by
    We just keep on dreamin'.

    Beat feet, walking a two-mile.
Meet me, meet me at the turnstile.
I never met him, I'll never forget him.
Dream dream, even for a little while.
Dream dream, filling up an idle hour.
    Fade away, radiate.

I sit by and watch the river flow.
I sit by and watch the traffic go.
Imagine something of your very own, something you can have and hold.
I'd build a road in gold just to have some dreamin'.
    Dreamin' is free.
    Dreamin', dreamin' is free.

    Dreamin', dreamin' is free.
    Dreamin', dreamin' is free.

    Dreaming
  • Blondie guitarist Chris Stein wrote the music for this song and came up with the line "dreaming is free." Lead singer Debbie Harry would often write lyrics after hearing the tracks for the songs, and that's what she did here.

The song starts out with a coherent story - Harry getting propositioned in a restaurant - but it quickly veers off in many directions, simulating a dream where one idea jumps to the next with no real rhyme or reason. It works well with the theme and with the track, including the bridge where Harry repeats the first word of each line:

Feet feet, walking a two mile
Meet meet, meet me at the turnstile

A similar structure can be heard in the 1982 Kim Wilde song "Kids In America."
  • Chris Stein said this song was "pretty much a cop" of "Dancing Queen" by ABBA.
  • Perhaps is was just a convenient word to rhyme with "pleasure," but when Harry sings "A movie or a measure," the word "measure" could be interpreted a few different ways. It might mean a plan of action, as in taking some kind of trip, or possibly a measure in the musical sense, meaning the rhythm.

    Me And Julio Down Lyrics

When the mama pajama rolled out a bed
She ran to the police station
When the papa found out he began to shout

    And he started the investigation
    It's against the law
    It was against the law
    What the mama saw
    It was against the law

The mama look down and spit on the ground
Every time my name gets mentioned
The papa said, "Oy, if I get that boy,
I'm gonna stick him the house of detention"
    Well I'm on my way
    I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way I'm taking my time
    But I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
    See you, me and Julio
    Down by the school yard
Me And Julio Down by the school yard

In a couple of days they come and
    Take me away
But the press let the story leak
    And when the radical priest
    Come to get me released
We was all on the cover of Newsweek

Yeah I'm on my way now
    I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way now, I'm taking my time
    But I don't know where
Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
    See you, me and Julio
    Down by the school yard
    See you me and Julio
    Down by the school yard
    See you me and Julio
    Down by the school yard

    Me And Julio Down
  • When asked what "Mama Pajama" saw that made her so distraught in this song, Paul Simon has said that he's not exactly sure, but he assumed it was something sexual. Simon made up a crazy little story for the song, and named the main character Julio because it sounded like a typical New York neighborhood kid (Simon grew up in Queens). What Paul didn't realize until years later was the impact the song had on Spanish-speaking listeners who were thrilled to hear a song coming out of America with a Latin name in the title.
  • The title is not proper grammar. "Julio and I down by the schoolyard" would be correct, but wouldn't capture the youthful innocence that made the song so popular.
  • Paul Simon was Simon's first solo album after he broke up with Art Garfunkel.
  • Simon made a video for this song in 1988 that showed him playing basketball with some school kids on a playground. The video had a rap intro by Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane, and a cameo by baseball legend Mickey Mantle, who lip-synchs the chorus. At the end of the video, NFL Hall-of-Famer John Madden is shown giving tips to the young players. (thanks, Alex - small town, IL)
  • The BBC refused to play this song because of the reference to Newsweek, which is an American magazine. The BBC had a strict policy against product mentions in the songs they played.
  • Simon played this song on a Season 8 Sesame Street appearance where he sings it on a stoop as a small group of children watch. One of the kids interjects her own lyrics from time to time, clearly having fun with it. Simon was one of the first big-name musical acts to appear on the show, which was filmed in his New York City stomping grounds. Once a generation of musicians who grew up watching Sesame Street came of age, the show had no trouble getting famous acts to appear.
