Platinum Lyrics

My disposition permeates
The room when I walk in the place
I'm sorry!
By calculation I'm way too much
Pretentiously I bitch a buck
But you bought it!
I can't exceed my reputation
A small town girl with compensation
Explorin' all my possibilities
Well don't you know I'll blaze a trail
But hell
You can come with me

What doesn't kill you
Only makes you blonder
My heels and my hotel
They just got taller
Somethin' bout Platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records
As it does on me

Historically real men prefer
The Marilyns with curls and curves
and I've got it!
Genetically or chemically
As long as it contains some bleach
I want it!

You don't need to be a fighter
Honey, just go one shade lighter
You'll acquire everything you want
When your roots grow out
And things go South
Hey, go back to the salon!

What doesn't kill you
Only makes you blonder
My heels and my hotel
They just got taller
Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

Hey! What doesn't kill you
Only makes you blonder
In fact, my heels and my hotel
They just got taller
Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

Somethin' bout platinum irrefutably
Looks as good on records as it does on me

Platinum
  • This blond-ambition anthem is the title track of Miranda Lambert's fifth album. During an interview with Billboard magazine the comment was made that "it might seem cocky" to name a record 'Platinum,' though all of Lambert's previous long players have indeed gone platinum.

"That's not what I'm thinking," she responded. "I mean, yeah, I'd love that - Mom says, 'Say it as though it's so.' I hope all my albums go platinum. But it's more about my life and my lifestyle." Which means, broadly: "Platinum is a lot of things: It's hair, it's diamonds and platinum, it's Bud Light Platinum, it's the color of an Airstream."
  • Lambert wrote this song with Nicolle Galyon and Natalie Hemby in her condo in Nashville on Music Row. She told Billboard: "The lyrics are funny, two of us are blonde, and we're just talking about stuff like that, 'can you believe we're sitting in a high-rise condo right now, from where we all came from?'"
  • The song features background vocals by Nicolle Galyon, Season 2 The Voice contestant Gwen Sebastian who sings with Blake Shelton on the road, and Aubrie Sellers, whose mother is Lee Ann Womack and stepfather Platinum producer Frank Liddell.

Lambert recalled: "I wanted it to be like a bunch of girls gossiping. Some people get somewhere just by putting on a lower cut shirt and making there hair a little blonder. That's how some people do it, and that's fine too, whatever it takes. But I wanted that feel in the song when we cut it, 'let's get some girls in here and see what it sounds like it.'"

"We just got in there and got some cocktails and started talking and singing, and that's what the songs supposed to be like," she added, "a gossipy girls song and kind of an anthem."
  • The Platinum album sold 179,000 units in its first week, to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 - the first time Lambert had topped the all-genre chart.

The LP also reached the summit of Billboard Top Country Albums, making the Lambert the first artist in the history of the chart to see all of their first five albums debut at #1.
  • The initial spark of inspiration for the song came from Galyon. "It started off with Nicolle. She had a line, 'What doesn't kill you only makes you blonder,'" Hemby told Billboard magazine. "Miranda had one that said 'My heels and my hotels - they just got taller.' That made me laugh out loud."

    The Middle Lyrics

    Hey
    Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
    Just try your best
    Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves when you're away

    [Chorus]
    It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in The Middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

    Hey
You know they're all the same
You know you're doing better on your own so don't buy in
    Live right now
    Just be yourself
It doesn't matter if that's good enough for someone else

    [Chorus x2]

    Hey
    Don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
    Just do your best
    Do everything you can
Don't you worry what their bitter hearts are going to say

    [Chorus x2]

    The Middle
  • This is about fitting in, and how you don't have to be the same as other people to be popular. In an interview NME, Jim Adkins remembered reading an email from a young fan who wrote she didn't fit in with the punk crowd at school because she "wasn't punk enough for them." He explained: "The tenet of the punk ideal - or, you know, the alternative, outside-the-mainstream, kind of ideal - is that you think yourself being more accepting ... I guess that tune was kind of a reaction to that, like you don't want to be friends with them anyway."
  • This was the breakout hit for Jimmy Eat World, who released their first album in 1994. The song climbed to #1 on the Modern Rock chart in 2001 and made #5 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 2002. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The song's music video was a three-minute coming-of-age flick directed by Paul Vedor. It featured a fresh-faced fully clothed teenage boy played by Josh Keleher, who attends a cool house party at which Jimmy Eat World are playing. The shindig is "clothing optional" and everyone, except the band, are in their underwear. The clip received plenty of play on MTV, especially on Total Request Live. Frontman Jim Adkins recalled to Billboard magazine in 2013 that the clip's concept was pretty much Vedor's. "It was a leap of trust to work with him," he added, "because it could've ended up... He tastefully told the story a little bit on the edge. But it could've gone really bad. We just had to trust him and it worked out."
  • For a long time, frontman Jim Adkins thought this song was too simple to take seriously. He told NME: "There's definitely a stigma, I think, when you're working that if something is too easy, it's not earned, you know... you develop your idea quickly, it's not earned. So I thought 'Middle' was kind of not as good as some of the other songs because I hadn't like sweat over it so much. But I mean you gotta - sometimes you gotta let that go and be cool with it."
  • Everyone had a good time making this song, including one guy who was enjoying himself a little too much. Adkins laughed: "He was having a hard time in the heat hanging out with a bunch of scantily clad ladies."
  • Drummer Zach Lind credits the album's producer, Mark Trombino, for honoring the simplicity of the song while finding ways to make it interesting. He told NME: "He was really great at like finding these cool, little sort of sonic textures to put in different places. It might not have the same kind of movement from one part to the next if you don't have those subtle things in there."
  • This was one of Taylor Swift's favorite songs when she was growing up. "I felt comforted by it, because I never felt like I really fit perfectly into any clique at school," she told Rolling Stone.

    Priscilla Lyrics

We look we got it made, don't we?
    Permanent accessory
On their arms and always on their minds
Rings, we gotta wear the real big rings
    Big smiles like figurines
Big hair for the real big kind
When they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happening to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man?
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

Golden gate, we have to put up a gate
    To find time to procreate
Or at least that's what we read
Bodyguard, didn't know I was his bodyguard
And I shouldn't have to play the part
At least while we're not in bed
You and me share a unique position
Married to a man who's married to attention
Couldn't think of anybody better to ask
How to be the first to make it last?

    Priscilla, Priscilla
How'd you get him to yourself?
Between the whistle calls and Southern dolls
It's enough to put a home through hell
    Priscilla, Priscilla
    He's always in high demand
How do you or don't you get the love you want when everybody wants your man
It's a difficult thing being Queen to the King
    And I feel ya
    Priscilla

'Cause when they turn it on and slick back their hair
We turn around and the world's right there
Woman to woman, I'm starting to see
What happened to you is happenin' to me

    Priscilla, Priscilla

    Priscilla
  • This rollicking, heartfelt tune is about the tabloid scrutiny that Lambert has endured concerning her marriage to fellow Nashville star Blake Shelton. The Nicolle Galyon, Natalie Hemby and Jimmy Robbins penned song references Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, but also addresses the complications surrounding any high-profile relationship.

Lambert told Spin magazine: "I think it does it in a fun way, though. It happens, and it's happening a lot, lot more to Blake and I than ever before, and I thought it was a really smart take on how it happens, and I definitely don't want people to think I'm comparing us to Priscilla and Elvis in any stretch of the imagination."
  • Lambert told People Country that the song was inspired by a tabloid featuring a bogus cover story about Shelton and her. Natalie Hemby was at Lambert's Nashville condo, saw the magazine and asked the singer how she dealt with all the untrue gossip. "I told her I had no choice. It's part of the deal now, and I'm still adjusting," Lambert explained.

Two weeks later Hemby sent over this song she had co-written that was inspired by that very conversation.
  • So what does Priscilla Presley think of the song? It appears she is a fan, as Elvis's ex-wife took to Instagram to encourage Lambert, saying "@LisaPresley and I are listening to your song 'Priscilla.' Love it!"

    With You Lyrics

I woke up in a dream today
To the cold of the static, and put my cold feet on the floor
    Forgot all about yesterday
Remembering I'm pretending to be where I'm not anymore
    A little taste of hypocrisy
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
Even though you're so close to me
You're still so distant, and I can't bring you back

    It's true
    The way I feel
    Was promised by your face
    The sound of your voice
    Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

    I'm With You
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

I hit you and you hit me back
We fall to the floor, the rest of the day stands still
Fine line between this and that
When things go wrong I pretend that the past isn't real
Now I'm trapped in this memory
And I'm left in the wake of the mistake, slow to react
So, even though you're close to me
You're still so distant, and I can't bring you back

    It's true
    The way I feel
    Was promised by your face
    The sound of your voice
    Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me

    I'm with you
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

    I'm with you
    You now I see
    Keeping everything inside (with you)
    You now I see
Even when I close my eyes

No, no matter how far we've come
I can't wait to see tomorrow
No matter how far we've come
I can't wait to see tomorrow
    With you

    You now I see

    You now I see

    All That's Left
  • This throwback Dixie Hall and Tom T. Hall penned Western swing track is Lambert's rootsiest cut ever. She first heard the tune while listening to Bluegrass Junction on SiriusXMon SiriusXM as she drove home from a Beyoncé concert. "My husband (Blake Shelton) had the idea to do the song Western- swing-style," she told Rolling Stone. "I hate it when he's right."
  • Nashville Western swing ensemble The Time Jumpers guest on the song. "We decided to record it western swing and get cool harmonies, and have fiddles, which meant we had to have The Time Jumpers on it," said Lambert. "They're the most talented people in the whole world, in one band. It's ridiculous."
  • The Time Jumpers boasts Vince Gill as a member. "Miranda gets that world. She's a Texas girl. She gets what that music is," Gill told Rolling Stone. "I've always liked her because she's got spunk and she knows what she wants to do. She has that thing. It's driven inside of her and you can tell that when you're around her."

    Your Love
  • The first single released by Scherzinger since she signed a worldwide deal to Sony Music at the start of 2013, the song and the rest of the album are the results of a collaboration between her and The Dream and Tricky Stewart. "The Dream and Tricky know me inside out, they are like my family,' explained Scherzinger about the partnership with the songwriting pair who are best known for Rihanna's mega hit "Umbrella." "I had to make this whole album with it just being the three of us. For the first time in my career I feel like this album is me, it's real. It's a very personal album for me. It is a reflection of the woman I am, the woman I am not and the woman I want to be."
  • The song is all about that special feeling we get when you fall in love. Speaking on UK TV show Good Morning Britain, Scherzinger opened up about how relationships affect her. "Love makes me feel like... it's just that unexplainable feeling that love makes you feel," she grinned. "It's just like 'ahhhh'. Like everything; fireworks and all that yummy, gushy stuff."
  • The music video was shot on May 19, 2014 on a Malibu, California beach. The clip was directed by Dawn Shadforth whose other credits include Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" and Florence + the Machine's "Shake It Out."

Scherzinger told Digital Spy the clip was shot on the beach as she wanted to take it back to her roots. "I was in my element with the sun, the ocean and the sand," she said. "What really inspired me was Janet Jackson's video for 'Love Will Never Do.' You just fall in love with her and you feel like you see a beautiful side of Janet that you don't always get to see when she's on stage performing. My fans know that side of me, so I just wanted to make sure I gave that to them."
  • Asked by Digital Spy why she chose this as the lead single, Scherzinger replied: "It's actually unlike any other song on my new album. It's more poppy. The other songs are pop, but they're more urban-pop. I just remember the feeling I got when I went back to my room and I just couldn't stop singing the song. It had a hold on me. I woke up and it was still lingering."

    Basket Case Lyrics

Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once
    I am one of those
    Melodramatic fools
    Neurotic to the bone
    No doubt about it

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
    It all keeps adding up
    I think I'm cracking up
    Am I just paranoid?
    Or am I just stoned

    I went to a shrink
    To analyze my dreams
She says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down
    I went to a whore
He said my life's a bore
So quit my whining cause it's bringing her down

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
    It all keeps adding up
    I think I'm cracking up
    Am I just paranoid?
    A ya-ya-ya

    Grasping to control
    So I better hold on

Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
    It all keeps adding up
    I think I'm cracking up
    Am I just paranoid?
    Or am I just stoned?

    Basket Case
  • This song is about anxiety attacks and a feeling that you are going crazy. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong suffered from various panic disorders while he was growing up - he would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with a panic attack and walk around his neighborhood to settle down. "Basket Case" was a cathartic song and personal song for him. "The only way I knew how to deal with it was to write a song about it," he explained.

This song stereotypes the whole condition of paranoia and compares it to being stoned.
  • By the time this came out, Green Day had already released two albums on an independent label. They had a small but ardent following that led to a bidding war for the band, which was won by Reprise Records. "Basket Case" was the third single from the album, following "Longview" and "Welcome To Paradise," and it was their breakout hit, getting airplay on Rock, Top 40, and Alternative radio stations.

The singles from Dookie were not available for sale (an effort to spur sales of the album), but were released to radio, making them ineligible for the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Basket Case" peaked at #26 on the Airplay chart of October 8, 1994, which was around the time of peak frenzy during Green Day concerts. The song also got a nice push from MTV, which put the Mark Kohr directed video in hot rotation.
  • In their early years, the band was constantly on tour and eating some real bad food. This food didn't always digest well, and the album title is what they called the result when it didn't.
  • A basket case is slang for an emotionally unstable, dysfunctional or completely useless person. Originally, the word referred to an amputee, especially a soldier, who had lost all four limbs; it was coined during World War I. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Blasting right into the verse at the beginning of this song is something that set it apart. Simplicity was a hallmark of the Dookie album, and while omitting an intro made little marketing sense (DJs couldn't talk up the song), it got right into the meat of the track. Tre Cool of Green Day cites the first Beatles album, Please Please Me, as an influence on Dookie, since those early Beatles songs also got right to the point.
  • When Billie Joe Armstrong spoke with Rolling Stone in 2014, he explained that this song will always be a part of the band's setlist, but that its meaning has changed for him. "It's about other people now," he said. "When I look at people as we play that song, they're having their own moment. At that point, I'm the audience."
  • The band played a raucous version of this song when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

    Sayit Lyrics

    Sayit
  • According to the press release, this House track features a duet between Robyn and an "aroused robot."
  • The industrial-style music video is a collaboration with H&M and was directed by Swedish design team Sandberg & Timonen. "Just the fact that I'm wearing a dress is quite scary," Robyn said of the clip. "I usually don't."
  • On the face of it this appears to be an exploration of one of Robyn's favorite themes: the duality between humans and robots ("Fembot," "The Girl and the Robot"). However the singer admitted to NME the song is really about, "as a woman, teaching a guy how to evolve in a relationship."

    Justin Lyrics

    Fuck all that bullshit!
    You watch me play.
    I look away.
    Your lights turn bright.
    You found the light.
    Take, up in space.
    You and I.
    Take, up in space.
    You and I.

    You're gonna die!
    What made me whine?
    I wish I hadn't drank.
    Inside your soul escapes.

    Take, up in space.
    You and I.
    Take, up in space.
    You and I.

    Cry, into me.
    Hold me something alright
The kids that die listening to me.
    You are alive!

    Take, up in space.
    You and I stay
    Take, up in space.
    You and I.
    Take, up in space.
    You and I.

    Justin
  • This is about a boy named Justin who was dying of intestinal cancer. His last wish was to meet the members of KoRn.
  • Lead singer Jon Davis: "It really freaked me out. That threw a whole bunch of new kind of pressures on my head. That's really intense. Someone's gonna die and his last thing he wants to do is come hang out with us. So I truly just freaked out. It's like why would you want to meet me? What makes me so special?" (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)
  • The first 12 tracks on the CD, which are 5 seconds each, form a minute of silence for Justin. (thanks, Ruud - Nispen, Netherlands)
