Sister Christian

Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Christy, who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. Essentially the song is about her coming of age. The vocalist on most Night Ranger songs was Jack Blades , but Keagy sang lead on this one, singing from his drum kit at shows.

The original title was "Sister Christy," but the rest of the band thought Keagy was singing "Sister Christian," so that became the title.

Keagy grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where "Motoring" was a term for driving around with your friends, often trying to pick up girls. (thanks, Chris - Annapolis, MD, for all above)

Midnight Madness was Night Ranger's second album. This song was written in time for their first album Dawn Patrol, but was held back. "Sister Christian" was released as the second single from the album, after "(You Can Still) Rock in America."

While some groups can't stand the sound of their signature song, Night Ranger isn't one of them. Jack Blades explained: "To me, it's a highlight to every one of our shows, instead of it being a curse. Maybe a lot of bands think of their big hit as, 'Ugh, we don't want to play that.' But that's not the way it is for Night Ranger. We really do love that song."

True Love

Coldplay's Ghost Stories album was inspired by the disintegration of lead singer Chris Martin's marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, his wife of 11 years. This song finds Martin missing the passion they had at the beginning of their relationship and questioning if she still loves him. During an interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin was asked directly by the DJ whether the subject of the album was the breakdown of his relationship, Martin responded, "I wouldn't use the word breakdown, this was more a realization about trying to grow up basically."

The song was produced by Timbaland, who is best known for his work for R&B and hip-hop artists. The American was one of three guest producers who worked on Ghost Stories along with Avicii and Madeon.

The Jonas Škerlund-directed feel-good video was shot in Los Angeles. The director previously worked with Coldplay on their clip for "Magic."

The visual depicts two misfits in inflatable bodysuits who both love ballet. Canadian actress Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, Pompeii) plays an aspiring ballet dancer whose large body prevents her from realizing her dreams, whilst Chris Martin portrays a mild-mannered janitor at a theater housing the dancing.

McCartney wrote this about Ringo's first wife, Maureen, who died of cancer. Paul remained friends with Maureen and the children she had with Ringo. When she died, Paul wrote this to comfort the kids. Other related songs- "Hey Jude," which Paul wrote to comfort John Lennon's son, and "Get Back," where Paul says "thanks Mo" to Maureen at the end of the song. McCartney wrote in the liner notes to the album: "I wanted to somehow convey how much I thought of her. For her and her kids. It certainly is heartfelt, and I hope it will help a bit."

Paul talked about this song when he went on the Oprah show in 1997. They played the video for the first time on that show.

This was included on a tribute CD for Princess Diana, who died in 1997.

The Beatles often gave very entertaining answers to the constant questions they were asked by reporters. One day when John Lennon was asked how they got their name, he answered that a man on a flaming pie came to him in a vision and told him to name the group The Beatles. This is where McCartney got the idea for the album title.

This sad, sparse, acoustic ballad finds Chris Martin pleading to a lost love to meet him again. However as she refuses to respond to his pleas, he concludes that he must learn to carry on alone.

The song is a track from Ghost Stories, a concept album about past actions, and the effects they can have on the future and one's capacity for love. The record was inspired to a large part by by the disintegration of lead singer Chris Martin's relationship with then-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin explained the record's lyrical content. "The idea of Ghost Stories, for me, was 'how do you let the things that happen to you in the past – your ghosts – how do you let them affect your present and your future?' Because there was a time when I was feeling like they were going to drag me down and ruin my life, and the lives of those around me." he said.

"I was very lucky to meet a very good sufi teacher who started to introduce the idea of 'if you sit with your experiences and the things you've been through, they alchemize,'" Martin continued. "At the time he said that, I didn't really know what that meant, but I trusted that it would work, and the more that I was learning about that, the more music just started flowing through."

Pigs On The Wing

This is probably the closest thing to a love song Floyd has ever made. The Floyd were noted as being more political in their lyrics than anything.

The song is split into two parts at the beginning and end of Animals, nesting three tracks between it. This is similar to the structure of Wish You Were Here, which featured "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" split into two parts with three tracks between.

While performing this live at a show, bassist/vocalist Roger Waters got increasingly agitated as the crowd let off explosives while the band tried to perform. Waters made his anger quite apparent to the crowd, the result of which is now a rather famous download. It's also one of the antics that led Waters to create the theme for The Wall. A View To A Kill

This was the theme song to the 1985 James Bond movie of the same name starring Roger Moore and Grace Jones. It is the only theme from a Bond movie to hit #1 in America.

The story behind this song, according to the bassist John Taylor, was that he approached the longtime Bond producer, Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli, while extremely intoxicated when they were both at a party. He stated that he was a long time fan (Major Bond geek would be more accurate. An Aston Martin was said to be one of his first "rock star" purchases, and he frequently mentioned his Bond video collection in interviews) of the series, but the music for the last few movies had been mediocre. He then offered to have his band fix the problem and Broccoli took the idea under advisement.

If you are a complete Duran Duran nut, you will notice during the video that there seems to be communication between three band members (Le Bon, Rhodes, and Roger Taylor), while the other two members (John and Andy Taylor) are doing things like shooting the deployed cameras and setting Rhodes's ear mike to explode. John and Andy were the members who left for Power Station. The other three made up the band Arcadia. (thanks, Michelle - Seattle, WA, for above 2)

This was the last single Duran Duran released before they took time off to pursue side projects. John and Andy Taylor joined Robert Palmer to form The Power Station, while Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor formed Arcadia. A year later Le Bon, Rhodes and John Taylor continued recording as Duran Duran.

Duran Duran performed this at Live Aid in 1985. At the time, it was the #1 song in the US, and their performance was the first song broadcast by ABC as part of their coverage of the event. MTV broadcast most of the show in the US, while the BBC aired it in England.

Looking back at this song during a 2012 interview with the A.V.Club , John Taylor commented: "Bond songs have to be big songs, don't they? They have to have the grandiosity. It's like designing a Rolls-Royce. You want it to be completely state of the art, but it's always going to have the honking great radiator grill on the front. There's certain criteria that have to be fulfilled. But I think we nailed it with that song. We really did nail it."

The first single from Do You Wanna Start A War?, this was released on April 29, 2014 across all digital platforms. Asked by Idaho radio station 100.3 The X Rocks about Fozzy's musical approach on the album, singer and WWE wrestling superstar Chris Jericho replied: "We wanted to do something a little different. We love, obviously, Avenged Sevenfold or Five Finger Death Punch, we love Iron Maiden, we love Ozzy. But we also love Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and Queen and U2 and The Beatles, bands that would always broaden their horizons, but still sound… the core of the band's sound was still there, but they would different things."

"And when we were listening to a lot of songs on rock radio, we felt that they fit a certain pattern," he continued. "We wanted to do something that was different from that, and that's what 'Lights Go Out' kind of came from that mindset. So it is a different type of tune, but we wanted to do that and shake things up and take a chance."

"You know, when you do something like that, sometimes your hardcore fans will go, 'Well, this isn't what we've heard before,' but they'll eventually like it," Jericho added. "And you do this to appeal to new fans, and that's what we're getting from 'Lights Go Out', who'd never heard Fozzy before, who'd never listened to Fozzy. 'Man, you guys rock! This song is amazing!' That's what you want."

This very cathartic song began as a droning riff guitarist Stone Gossard started playing. The rest of the band started forming the track, and Eddie Vedder walked up to the microphone and poured out the words that would make up most of the lyrics. It was a very emotional song for Vedder, who was thinking about the pain and loss he had been through: he found out as a teenager that the man he thought was his father was actually his stepfather, and his real father died before they could connect. Eddie realized that the song had a similar meaning for his bandmates, who were still dealing with the death of Andrew Wood, who was the lead singer in Gossard and Jeff Ament's band before they formed Pearl Jam. "Release" was one of the first songs Eddie wrote with the band, and it's one that helped them find common ground. "We were strangers, but we were coming from a similar place," said Vedder.

At first, this song was almost 10 minutes long, as Vedder did "release" a lot of words when he started singing it.
