Daughter Lyrics

Daughter
  • Peter Blegvad wrote this song two decades into a music career that included stints in the bands Henry Cow and Slapp Happy. He told us the story of "Daughter":

As everyone knows, a parent's love for their child is partly narcissism. My daughter, Kaye, was 3 when I wrote the song - long enough for me to have recognized this fact in myself and seen it manifested in the behavior of other parents. It's natural, maybe even a crucial element, but the narcissism has to be watched, obviously. (Think of Dr. Evil and Mini-Me in Austin Powers). The comedy of all that amused me, and I didn't think anyone had treated that in a song before. I was vaguely thinking of Stevie Wonder singing "Isn't She Lovely" and Frank Sinatra singing "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)" and I wanted to write something that would express that kind of love honestly but also hint at the complexities which come with that role and responsibility.

The chord sequence is uplifting, but "Daughter" is maybe more sardonic than I think some people realize. It's about unconditional commitment to the task of raising a child, but it's also about the vanity and narcissism of the parent.
  • This song was popularized by Loudon Wainwright III, who recorded it for the 2007 movie Knocked Up. In the film, it plays in a touching scene where Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen bring their little girl home from the hospital.

It's one of the few songs Wainwright recorded that he didn't write, and it became his most popular, even surpassing his 1973 novelty hit "Dead Skunk" in downloads. Wainwright played an obstetrician in the movie and recorded the de facto soundtrack, Strange Weirdos, which included this song on the tracklist. The album was co-produced by Joe Henry.

Wainwright and Blegvad had toured together and remained good friends, which is how Loudon came across the song. Wainwright typically mentions Blegvad's authorship when he performs the song.
  • An irony of this song is that Loudon Wainwright III has had a fraught relationship with his children, three of whom - Rufus, Martha and Lucy - are musicians. A song like this one about the unconditional commitment to a child is at odds with Loudon's real life: he was constantly touring and spent most of his time away from his kids. Martha even wrote a song about him called "Bloody Mother F--king A--hole."
  • This is a very popular song at weddings. In our 2014 interview with Loudon Wainwright III , he explained: "Practically every show that I do now, fathers come up to me and say that they danced to that song at their daughter's wedding. The song has had a big impact to a lot of people."

    Bubble Toes Lyrics

It's as simple as something that nobody knows
That her eyes are as big as her bubbly toes
On the feet of a queen of the hearts of the cards
And her feet are all covered with tar balls and scars
It's as common as something that nobody knows
That her beauty will follow wherever she goes
Up the hill in the back of her house
In the world she love me forever,
    I know she could

I remember when you and me mmm how we used to be just good friends
    Wouldn't give me none
But all I wanted was some
She's got a whole lot of reasons
She can't think of a single one
    That can justify leaving
And he got none but he thinks he got so many problems
Man he got, too much time to waste

    His dreams are like commercials
But her dreams are picture perfect and
Our dreams are so related though they're often underestimated

It's as simple as something that nobody knows that
Her eyes are as big as her bubbly toes
On the feet of the queen of the hearts of the cards
And her feet are infested with tar balls and

La da da da da da

Well I was eating lunch at the D. L. G.
When this little girl came and she sat next to me
I never seen nobody move the way she did
Well she did and she does and she'll do it again

When you move like a jellyfish
    Rhythm don't mean nothing
    You go with the flow
    You don't stop
    Move like a jellyfish
    Rhythm is nothing
    You go with the flow
    You don't stop

It's as common as something that nobody knows it
Her beauty will follow wherever she goes
Up the hill in the back of her house in the wood
She'll love me forever, I know she

La da da da da da

    If you would only listen
You might just realize what you're missing
    You're missing me
    If you would only listen
You might just realize what you're missing
    You're missing me

It's as simple as something that nobody knows that
Her eyes are as big as her bubbly toes
On the feet of the queen of the hearts of the cards
And her feet are infested with tar balls and

La da da da da da

    Bubble Toes
  • This song is titled after a cute nickname Johnson has for his wife. Johnson introduced this tune during a July 2010 concert in Hartford, Connecticut by saying, "I wrote this song when I was trying to get this girl one time." A few bars into the song, he leaned back into the microphone and added: "I ended up getting her, too."
  • Jack and his wife used to live in Santa Barbara, California, and they both went to the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). The part that goes "I was eating lunch at the DLG when this little girl came and she sat next to me" refers to the De La Guerra dinning hall at UCSB. Apparently Mrs. Johnson was there and some guy she didn't like was trying to hook up with her. She sat down next to Jack so it would look like she was taken. (thanks, tess - sb, CA)
  • In a Rolling Stone interview, Johnson said: "A song like 'Bubble Toes,' I don't know if I would've written that song knowing a million people were gonna hear it," Johnson says. "It was like a joke to my wife around the house, and then a couple of friends liked it, and then people asked for it at shows." When his record sales reached 100,000, Johnson was staggered. "I said, 'We don't even know that many people." (thanks, Jenn - Aberdeen, MD)
  • When Johnson sings "La da da da da da," he had planned on putting words there for the album, but when the time came no words came to mind so he just went with it. (thanks, Harrison - Natchez, MS)
  • Brushfire Fairytales was Johnson's first album. He was working on films when a demo of his music caught the attention of Ben Harper's producer J.P. Plunier, who agreed to produce the album. After a great deal of touring, Johnson built a following and the album reached the Top 40 in the US. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

  • This song is a duet with Ramblin' Jack Elliott, who is one of Wainwright's idols. With just their voices and acoustic guitars, the pair sing about the disappointment of coming to the end of life just as you start to figure it out. In our interview with Wainwright , he said: "That album is all about mortality and so it just seems like I just developed that idea and then got my hero Jack Elliott to sing it with me."
  • Wainwright's father was a writer for Life magazine. This song title came from a phrase that Loudon found in one of his dad's notebooks.

    Put Your Hearts Up Lyrics

Lemme see you Put Your Hearts Up, yeah lemme see you put your hearts up, yeah
If we give a little love, maybe we can change the world

    You think you're so small
    Like you're itty bitty.
Just one match in the lights of the city
Walking by strangers on the side of the street
Like a quarter in a cup'll get 'em off on their feet, like
You think you're never gonna make your mark
Sit back and watch the world while it falls apart, like
Out of sight out of mind, like, like
It's just a waste of time,
    Like, like, like

    Hey yeah yeah yeah
    Hey yeah yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
    I said
    Hey yeah yeah yeah
    Hey yeah yeah
Sing it if you with me
All you boys and all you girls

Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah

If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world

Wishing on a shooting star in the sky
We can do anything if we try
    Can't resurrect ghandi
    Resurrect but
If we put our heads together
    We can do anything like
You don't have to be a billionare
    You don't have to have
Much too show how much care
    Like give a wink
    Give a kiss
    Like give a little happiness
    Like like like

    Hey yeah yeah yeah
    Hey yeah yeah
If we give a little love

Maybe we can change the world
    I said

Don't let em bring you down now, down now
Don't let em bring you down now, down now
And get up and just love now love now
And get up and just love now love now
Don't let em bring you down now, down now

    Put Your Hearts Up
  • This Pop song was released as Ariana's debut single. The Bubblegum tune, which was aimed at young audiences who knew the teen singer from Victorious, talks about making the world a better place. The track flopped, debuting on US iTunes at #61 before quickly falling off the chart.
  • Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2014, Ariana recalled her rocky start. "It was geared toward kids and felt so inauthentic and fake," she said. "That was the worst moment of my life."

"For the video, they gave me a bad spray tan and put me in a princess dress and had me frolic around the street," Ariana added. "The whole thing was straight out of hell. I still have nightmares about it, and I made them hide it on my Vevo page."

    This is My December
This is my time of the year
    This is my December
    This is all so clear

    This is my December
This is my snow covered home
    This is my December
    This is me alone

    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things that I said to you

And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
    Give it all away
To have someone to come home to

    This is my December
These are my snow covered dreams
    This is me pretending
    This is all I need

    And I
Just wish that I didn't feel
Like there was something I missed
    And I
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
    And I

    My December
  • The band wrote this in Nashville while they were on the road in 2000. The Song is basically about being away from the ones you care for.
  • Mike Shinoda wrote the Lyrics. (thanks, Kim - Long Valley, NJ)
  • The song is about a person (Chester in this case) who got in a fight with his girlfriend and left. It says this on Mike's part, "Just wish that it didn't feel like there was something I missed. Take back all the things I said to make you feel like that." Now "My December," which is the end of the year, represents the end for him. "This is my snow covered home" represents his new place, and "This is me pretending... this is all I need" says his new home isn't good enough, but he wants it to be. He wants his girlfriend back. My Faith In You Lyrics

Yeah, this world will turn its back
When you find yours against that wall
Just watch it as it keeps on spinning
    Just like there's nothing wrong.
That's why I'm thumbing through these pages
They say the answers are in red
And I believe they're in there somewhere
I just haven't found 'em yet
It's the only hope that I got left

'Cause I could stand to lose my faith in
    Friends that come and go
Yeah, they'll be there when you need them,
They say that when you don't
I could give up on my heroes
    Could let myself down, too
    But what would I do
If I lost My Faith In You?
    My faith in you!

You know I've learned through all these stories
All about the pain you felt
And I know you did all that for me
And I'm still asking you for help
'Cause Lord I just can't help myself!

I could stand to lose my faith in
    Friends that come and go
Yeah, they'll be there when you need them,
They say that when you don't
I could give up on my heroes
    Could let myself down, too
    But what would I do
If I lost my faith in you?
    My faith in you

'Cause I've been beaten, I've been broken
    I've been dangerously bruised
And Lord, I never would have made it
If I'd of lost my faith in you
If I'd lost my faith in you

Know you always got my back
    And I don't know why
It feels like I deserve it
For a hell raiser like me
To have a safe place to land
    Can't thank you enough,
    You saved my life

I will never lose my faith in you, oh, oh
    My faith in you
I'll never lose my faith in you

  • Brantley Gilbert broke off his engagement to singer and actress Jana Kramer in August 2013 while he was struggling to maintain his two years of sobriety. The Country star sings about his struggles on this Just As I Am cut, from which he came out stronger and more optimistic. "There is a song called 'My Faith in You' that is really my main spiritual song on the record about my faith and people close to me and the ones who really stood behind me," Gilbert told CMT. "They're my brothers, and if I ever need anything in my life, they are there."

"I was fortunate enough to have a situation in my life where everything did shake out and hit rock bottom, and I did see who was standing there and really saw who had my back for real," he continued. "Had to be the hardest thing and probably the best thing I ever did. No joke."

    Flagstaff, Arizona
It's been two weeks on the road with Sean na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na na
One day before we did play
We penned a song by us, for us
We didn't have the verse but we had the chorus:

Yeah, well I can't take it no more 'cause I'm going on a shopping spree, yeah
Well I can't save no money cause I spent it on a shopping spree, yeah

After the show, there's nowhere to go
Everywhere's packed with white baseball hat frat boys
So we end up at this empty place
    Got a flaming doc
The Dali Llamas were the band scheduled to rock
Benny Na Na looks at me
    I think I hear what he's saying
"Atom, do you hear what they're playing?"
    They're going shopping

Yeah, well I can't take it no more 'cause I'm going on a shopping spree, yeah
Well I can't save no money cause I spent it on a shopping spree, yeah

    Shopping spree (x4)
    So Dali Llamas...whatever
Spelled Salvador Dali and the animal, how clever
You have a five string fretless bass
You stole our song, now we rock your face

As I was goin' over the Cork and Kerry mountains.
I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin'.
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier.
I said stand o'er and deliver or the devil he may take ya.

Musha ring dumb a do dumb a da.
    Whack for my daddy-o,
    Whack for my daddy-o.
    There's Whiskey In The Jar-o.

I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny.
I took all of his money and I brought it home to Molly.
She swore that she'd love me, never would she leave me.
But the devil take that woman for you know she tricked me easy.

Musha ring dumb a do dumb a da.
    Whack for my daddy-o,
    Whack for my daddy-o.
    There's whiskey in the jar-o.

Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber.
Takin' my money with me and I never knew the danger.
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell.
I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels.

Musha ring dumb a do dumb a da.
    Whack for my daddy-o,
    Whack for my daddy-o.
    There's whiskey in the jar-o.

Now some men like the fishin' and some men like the fowlin',
And some men like ta hear a cannon ball a roarin'.
Me? I like sleepin' specially in my Molly's chamber.
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah.

Musha ring dumb a do dumb a da.
    Whack for my daddy-o,
    Whack for my daddy-o.
    There's whiskey in the jar-o.

And I got drunk on whiskey-o

    Whiskey In The Jar
  • Traditionally an Irish folk song, this was covered by The Dubliners in 1967 before Thin Lizzy rocked it up in 1972 for their breakthrough hit. (thanks, Brad - Brisbane, Australia)
  • This tells the story of a bandit in southwest Ireland who robs an English Army Officer to keep his girlfriend Molly happy after she promises to love him forever. She then betrays him and the young man is taken to jail.
  • Metallica recorded a popular cover of this song on their 1998 Garage, Inc. album. Other notable versions are by The Pogues, The Dubliners, U2, Pulp and Smokie. The lyrics of this song can vary from version to version, but most covers use the Thin Lizzy lyrics. (thanks, Stephen - Kilkenny, Ireland, for above 2)
  • Although a massive first hit for Thin Lizzy, this was actually meant to be the B-side. The band recorded "Black Boys On The Corner" as the A-side and put the old traditional Irish Song "Whiskey In The Jar" on the B-side because they didn't have anything else. It was the record company that decided to make "Whiskey in the Jar" the A-side. (thanks, Michael Dickson - Denia, Spain)

    All Fall Down
  • California Breed recorded their eponymous debut album at producer Dave Cobb's Nashville studio in December 2013. Four months previously, vocalist Glenn Hughes went through heart surgery to replace his aortic valve, and survived subsequent near-fatal complications.

"For some reason I wasn't frightened. I felt like I was going to be OK, but I'm still supremely grateful to be here," he told Billboard magazine. "For me to still be doing this at my age (62) with what I've been through with drink and drugs... There was a time everyone was putting best on me, 'Ah, Hughes is gonna be the first to go.' But he's still here."
  • This song is about a time many years previously when Hughes nearly passed away during his drug addicted phase. "I was lying on my bed and had all of my friends around me and thought that I had died," he recalled to Classic Rock magazine. "That's what the lyric 'I should have been gone. But I came back for me' is about. It's okay for me to go back and sing about that incident now because it was so long ago. And the song reminds me of Holy Man [from Deep Purple's Stormbringer album] in a way."

  • Night Ranger's drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this song about his sister Christy, who is 10 years younger than him and was growing up fast. Essentially the song is about her coming of age. The vocalist on most Night Ranger songs was Jack Blades , but Keagy sang lead on this one, singing from his drum kit at shows.
  • The original title was "Sister Christy," but the rest of the band thought Keagy was singing "Sister Christian," so that became the title.
  • Keagy grew up in Eugene, Oregon, where "Motoring" was a term for driving around with your friends, often trying to pick up girls. (thanks, Chris - Annapolis, MD, for all above)
  • Midnight Madness was Night Ranger's second album. This song was written in time for their first album Dawn Patrol, but was held back. "Sister Christian" was released as the second single from the album, after "(You Can Still) Rock in America."
  • While some groups can't stand the sound of their signature song, Night Ranger isn't one of them. Jack Blades explained: "To me, it's a highlight to every one of our shows, instead of it being a curse. Maybe a lot of bands think of their big hit as, 'Ugh, we don't want to play that.' But that's not the way it is for Night Ranger. We really do love that song."

    True Love Lyrics

For a second, I was in control
I had it once, I lost it though
And all along the fire below would rise

And I wish you could have let me know
    What's really going on below
I've lost you now, you let met go but one last time

Tell me you love me, if you don't then lie, oh lie to me

Remember once upon a time, when I was yours and you were blind
The fire would sparkle in your eyes and mine

So tell me you love me, if you don't then lie, oh lie to me
Just tell me you love, if you don't then lie, oh lie to me
If you don't then lie, oh lie to me
And call it true, call it True Love
Call it true, call it true love

    True Love
  • Coldplay's Ghost Stories album was inspired by the disintegration of lead singer Chris Martin's marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, his wife of 11 years. This song finds Martin missing the passion they had at the beginning of their relationship and questioning if she still loves him. During an interview with BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Martin was asked directly by the DJ whether the subject of the album was the breakdown of his relationship, Martin responded, "I wouldn't use the word breakdown, this was more a realization about trying to grow up basically."
  • The song was produced by Timbaland, who is best known for his work for R&B and hip-hop artists. The American was one of three guest producers who worked on Ghost Stories along with Avicii and Madeon.
  • The Jonas Å kerlund-directed feel-good video was shot in Los Angeles. The director previously worked with Coldplay on their clip for "Magic."

The visual depicts two misfits in inflatable bodysuits who both love ballet. Canadian actress Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, Pompeii) plays an aspiring ballet dancer whose large body prevents her from realizing her dreams, whilst Chris Martin portrays a mild-mannered janitor at a theater housing the dancing.
