Murders In The Rue Morgue Lyrics

I remember it as plain as day
Although it happened in the dark of the night.
I was strolling through the streets of Paris
And it was cold it was starting to rain.
And then I heard a piercing scream
And I rushed to the scene of the crime
But all I found was the butchered remains
Of two girls lay side by side.

Murders In The Rue Morgue
Someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Run before the killers go free

There's some people coming down the street
At last there's someone heard my call
I can't understand why they're pointing at me
I never done nothing at all.
But I must have got some blood on my hands
Because everyone's shouting at me
I can't speak French so I couldn't explain
And like a fool I started running away.

Murders in the Rue Morgue
Someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Am I ever gonna be free.

And now I've gotta get away from the arms of the law.
All France is looking for me.
I've gotta find my way across the border for sure
Down the south to Italy.

Murders in the Rue Morgue
Someone call the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
I'm never going home.

Well I made it to the border at last
But I can't erase the scene from my mind
Anytime somebody stares at me, well
I just start running blind
Well I'm moving through the shadows at night
Away from the staring eyes
Any day they'll be looking for me
'Cause I know I show the signs of...

Murders in the Rue Morgue
Running from the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Running from the arms of the law

Murders in the Rue Morgue
Running from the Gendarmes
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Am I ever gonna be free

It took so long and I'm getting so tired
I'm running out of places to hide
Should I return to the scene of the crime
Where the two young victims died
If I could go to somebody for help
It'd get me out of trouble for sure
But I know that it's on my mind
That my doctor said I've done it before.

Murders in the Rue Morgue
They're never gonna find me
Murders in the Rue Morgue
I'm never going home.

Murders In The Rue Morgue
  • This song was inspired by the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. They both describe the gruesome murder of two girls in Rue Morgue, Paris. In the song, an Englishman hears the girls being murdered, runs for the Rue Morgue, and finds their corpses. He gets blood on his hands, however, and when a crowd gathers everyone thinks he's guilty. He can't speak French, so he can't explain and becomes a fugitive from the law. He eventually leaves France to keep from being hunted, but is still so paranoid that simply being stared at makes him think he's recognized as a murderer. As a result, he never stops trying to escape the French police, no matter where he goes.
  • This was the first time Steve Harris performed the bass with a significant amount of harmonics.
  • Another track on the album, "Innocent Exile," is the continuing story of the fugitive in this song (Iron Maiden was into sequel songs; see "Charlotte the Harlot" and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"). The album itself had a running lyrical theme of death and murder (hence the title), and the cover art shows Eddie murdering someone clinging to him with an axe.
  • The band In Flames did a cover of this for the 1997 compilation album Made In Tribute - A Tribute to The Best Band In A Whole Goddamn World! (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)

    Dear Younger Me Lyrics

    Dear Younger Me
    Where do I start
If I could tell you everything that I have learned so far
    Then you could be
    One step ahead
Of all the painful memories still running thru my head
I wonder how much different things would be
    Dear younger me,

    Dear younger me
    I cannot decide
Do I give some speech about how to get the most out of your life
    Or do I go deep
    And try to change
The choices that you’ll make cuz they’re choices that made me
Even though I love this crazy life
Sometimes I wish it was a smoother ride
Dear younger me, dear younger me

If I knew then what I know now
    Condemnation would’ve had no power
My joy my pain would’ve never been my worth
If I knew then what I know now
Would’ve not been hard to figure out
What I would’ve changed if I had heard

    Dear younger me
    It’s not your fault
You were never meant to carry this beyond the cross
    Dear younger me

    You are holy
    You are righteous
You are one of the redeemed
Set apart a brand new heart
    You are free indeed

    Every mountain every valley
Thru each heartache you will see
    Every moment brings you closer
To who you were meant to be
Dear younger me, dear younger me

    You are holy
    You are righteous
You are one of the redeemed
Set apart a brand new heart
    You are free indeed

    You are holy
    You are righteous
You are one of the redeemed
Set apart a brand new heart
    You are free indeed

    You are holy

You are one of the redeemed

    Dear Younger Me
  • Bart Millard's dad was an abusive father until he found out that he had cancer, when the MercyMe vocalist was at high school. After the diagnosis he committed himself to Christ and one of a number of things he let go of were his abusive ways. Bart told Fox News: "He kind of fell in love with Christ and he went from the monster to the guy I wanted to be like when I grew up."

This acoustic prayer for Bart's younger self is based on when he was abused as a kid. The song is directed at those who are struggling through life.

  • This is another AC/DC song which lyrical influences in Chuck Berry, an expert at making sexual references seem very obscure, to the point of being innocent. This song is about a girl who turns the guy on so much that he gets big erection, ie, "hard."
  • The lyrics mention a "Hellevator" (or "Hell elevator"). Like a "Highway to Hell," this would be a transportation method to Hell. AC/DC was fond of incorporating something earthly and physical with Hell in their lyrics (see also "Hell's Bells"). (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 2)

  • The tracks on Rise of the Lion were inspired by letters sent by Miss May I fans, which the band hadn't been able to reply to. Vocalist Levi Benton explained to AbsolutePunk : "That song is the heartbreak one. And it's so crazy because all the letters we get from fans that are touched in a way that the song wasn't even written for and that's what I think is amazing about it. We've had people say 'My wife left me', 'My girlfriend left me' 'and it's helped me in this way.'"

"We've never really written a heartbreak song before," Benton added. "We've written vague songs that could be about that, but you never really know. This one is straight forward. Boom."

    Stillborn
  • Written by lead singer/guitarist Zakk Wylde, this song is about a man whose girlfriend treats him so poorly and takes such advantage of him that his love for her dies, and, indeed, he feels dead inside. Wylde insists that it's not autobiographical and that if any girl was treating him like that, he would simply break up with her and turn the tables.
  • Structurally, this is a very simple song, as Wylde believes that some of the best songs are ones you could play with one guitar string (low E). In our interview with Wylde , he explained: "You listen to something like 'Whole Lotta Love,' even 'Paranoid,' there's three parts to it. You have the opening riff, you have the verse, and you have that little section and then it gets back to the verse again. 'Stillborn' was just a matter of trying to write with as few chords as I possibly could."
  • The first single from The Blessed Hellride album, this song features background vocals by Ozzy Osbourne. Zakk Wylde was Ozzy's guitarist for his solo albums No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and No More Tears (1991). According to Wylde, immediately after recording the song, Ozzy asked how it turned out, then demanded a beer. Zakk's own vocals on the song came out sounding a lot like Osbourne's.

It was Wylde's wife, Barbaranne, who got Ozzy to sing on the track. Zakk didn't want to "mooch" off Ozzy, but Barbaranne was not deterred: she contacted Ozzy's wife/manager Sharon, and arranged the collaboration. Sharon thought it was a great idea, as it came at a time when she was happy to get Ozzy out of the house and doing some music again.
  • The video was directed by Rob Zombie, who came up with the concept while touring with Black Label Society on Ozzfest. Ozzy Osbourne did not appear in the clip. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)

    Qwerty
  • The lead single from The Righteous & the Butterfly, this was the first Mushroomhead song featuring vocalist J-Mann since he left the band in 2004.

"That's got a real kind of 'circus vibe' to it," he said in our interview . "As far as the lyrics go, it's a commentary on the state of the country as far as the way Big Brother's clamping down. We've turned war into profit and false patriotism."
  • The song came about just after guitarist Church and bassist Dr. F first joined the band in February 2012. Dr. F told Loudwire : "Right around then, we were rehearsing for the annual 'old-school' show in Cleveland and our heads were full of nothing but Mushroomhead's early catalog. It just so happened that we were in the pre-production stages of writing for a new album as well."

"The influence of the early 'Shroom period is very evident in 'Qwerty' as it was inspired by songs like 'Simpleton,' 'Ego-Trip' and '43,' just to name a few," the bassist added.

"We wanted to fuse together the fun, dark keyboard driven sounds of the old-school with a raw, heavy modern twist," Dr F concluded. "We feel as though we've accomplished this and couldn't be more excited that it became the first single!"
  • Want some QWERTY history? In 1868 the journalist Christopher L Sholes of the Milwaukee News received a patent for an invention he called the "Type-Writer." However, the alphabetical layout of this first typewriter meant common letters in close proximity frequently jammed at high typing speeds. To minimise such clashing, Sholes conceived the four-rowed QWERTY layout, which remains on keyboards to this day.
  • Vocalist Jeffrey Nothing explained the song's meaning to AntiMusic : "I believe it is kind of saying: 'All for one, one for all." No matter what the rank, those whom actually fight the wars are very much the common man. Brothers in Arms if you will."

"Yet the reasons these conflicts are carried out in the first place, for the most part, come from a much higher place," Nothing continued. "The numbers lost due to any of these catastrophes can be staggering and yet Peace can seem a flat out myth."

For all of our conceived differences we are very much the same, with the same aspirations and dreams," he added. "In brutal reality, we can be called upon at anytime. Puppets and pawns, an endless supply, for sadistic schemes. War is and will always be, idiocy reigning supreme."

  • Rhett Miller sings here about the mystique of being a Rock Star and how it isn't all it's cut out to be. "Rock stars were once such mythical creatures, up there with presidents, playmates and preachers," he explained to to Here & Now's Robin Young. "The idea behind this song was to break all these rules that I've tried so hard to follow for all these years. I have wanted songs to be universal and not specific about me or my life or this weird job, and it just occurred to me this is the 20th anniversary of the first album of my band, and a lot of the people in the audience every night, when I look out, are literally younger than my career. And I just thought, if I'm ever going to address this as someone who's experienced it longer than most people get to, now seems like the time, because I still get to rock and I love to rock."

    Woman
  • Lennon wrote this song as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono. He regarded it as the most Beatles-like track on his Double Fantasy album and he called it the '80s update of "Girl," which is a track on Rubber Soul. Speaking with Rolling Stone just days before his death, Lennon said: "'Woman' came about because, one sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us. Not just what my Yoko does for me, although I was thinking in those personal terms... but any truth is universal. What dawned on me was everything I was taking for granted. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It's a 'we' or it ain't anything."
  • In many ways, this song is Lennon's apology to Yoko. In 1973, the couple was having problems in their marriage, so Yoko agreed to put their relationship on hold and let John sow his oats. He did, taking up with his assistant May Pang and engaging in some unruly behavior. Lennon referred to this time as his "Lost Weekend" - it lasted about 18 months.
  • This was released as a single in January 1981, about a month after Lennon was murdered.
  • In the UK, this replaced Lennon's "Imagine" at #1, which had been reissued following Lennon's death. This was the first time an artist replaced himself at UK #1 since The Beatles did it in 1963 with "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
  • This is the only song title for which Lennon and McCartney wrote separate songs. In 1966 McCartney wrote a song of the same title for Peter & Gordon, using the pseudonym Bernard Webb.

  • This is the title track and lead single of Ray LaMontagne's fifth studio album. The record was produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys who helped dip the New Hampshire singer-songwriter 's folky sound into psychedelic waters. LaMontagne told American Songwriter magazine: "I always liked that psychedelic sound. I was always a fan of early Pink Floyd. I like the Kinks, the Troggs. I loved all that stuff. Captain Beefheart too. So I think this album is maybe tipped a little more in that direction in terms of influences."

"I just really allowed myself to write a different kind of song," he added. "I thought people might not like it, but that's never been a factor for me. I've been writing songs now for fifteen years and so I can trust my gut at this point."
  • Ray LaMontagne initially felt no pressure to swiftly produce a follow-up album to his 2010's Grammy winning set, God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise. However the right songs were eluding him, so in 2012 the songwriter decided to seek help. He wrote to his friend Elvis Costello for advice. LaMontagne told American Songwriter magazine: "He's always been a sort of mentor to me. Overall, I was just going through this weird stage. Nothing was sounding interesting to me. I'd think, I don't want to do that, or, I've done that already. It was like the well had run dry.

So I put my heart on my sleeve, and I told Elvis, 'God, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.' And he said, 'There's only one way. You just have to trust that inner voice.' That was really helpful. So I just really allowed myself to write a different kind of song."

    Dark Lady Lyrics

The fortune queen of New Orleans,
Was brushing her cat in her black limousine
On the backseat were scratches from
The marks of men her fortune she had won
Couldn't see through the tinted glass,
She said "home James" and he hit the gas
I followed her to some darkened room,
She took my money, she said "I'll be with you soon"

Dark Lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

She dealt two cards, a queen and a three
And mumbled some words that were so strange to me
Then she turned up a two-eyed jack,
My eyes saw red but the card still stayed black
She said the man you love is secretly true
To someone else who is very close to you
My advice is that you leave this place,
Never come back and forget you ever saw my face

Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

So I ran home and crawled in my bed,
I couldn't sleep because of all the things she said
Then I remembered her strange perfume,
And how I smelled it was in my own room!
So I sneaked back and caught her with my man,
Laughing and kissing till they saw the gun in my hand
The next thing I knew they were dead on the floor,
Dark lady would never turn a card up anymore

Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one
Danced to her gypsy music till her brew was done
Dark lady played back magic till the clock struck on the twelve
She told me more about me than I knew myself

    Dark Lady
  • This was written by The Ventures keyboard player Johnny Durrill.
  • This is about a woman who visits a famous fortune teller. The fortune teller (the "dark lady") tells her to break up with her boyfriend. Later on, the shocked protagonist remembers where she smelt the fortune teller's perfume before: on her bed after a night with her lover. She returns to the dark lady with a gun and finds her beau making love to the fortune teller. In a split decision, she pulls the trigger and kills the dark lady.
  • Johnny Durrill: "I spent a week in his (Snuff Garrett, Cher's producers) office playing him songs, one of which Cher recorded. Later, when I was on tour in Japan with the Ventures, I was writing an interesting song. I telegraphed the unfinished lyrics to Garrett. He said to 'make sure the bitch kills him.' Hence, in the song both the lover and fortune teller were killed. That song became 'Dark Lady' which Cher cut; it went to number one in 1974. Garrett provided me access to artists such as Cher and Sinatra and other opportunities such as soundtracks." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 2)

When I get this colour I'll have it made in the shade

    Oh, I hope I'm OK

  • This was one of five tracks from a 1975 demo recorded by Blondie. It was produced by Alan Betrock, the founder of New York Rocker, one of the primary organs of the American Punk scene. The song was first issued on the 1994 compilation The Platinum Collection.
  • The song was the first ever one that Debbie Harry wrote for Blondie, and it served as a mission statement. She told Mojo magazine: "I think as far as Blondie is concerned, I took reference from the silver screen. Blonde goddesses. All of them. Not just Marilyn, but Jean Harlow and Lana Turner and even Diana Dors and Jayne Mansfield. I think it was a conceived idea from Hollywood that registered in my brain as being something that would work in a band situation."

    Thrasher Lyrics

    Thrasher
  • Throughout the song, references to geological formations and farming are repeated. The song could be interpreted to be about death or the decline of rock 'n' roll, but Neil says, "Thrasher was pretty much me writing about my experiences with Crosby, Stills & Nash in the mid '70s"
  • The great Canyon rescue episode probably refers to an episode of one of the mid '50s Westerns. Neil has said he enjoys sci-fi films and old Westerns.
  • This could reflect Neil's personal philosophy about life and music, and his emphasis on being true to his own heart and soul. In a 2003 Rolling Stone article, Neil said: "That's what I know how to do (make albums) and I do that OK. Sometimes I do it and people really like it.
