No Rest for the Wicked Lyrics

No Rest for the Wicked

My one heart hurt another
So only one life can't be enough
Can you give me just another
For that one who got away

Lonely I, I'm so alone now
There'll be no rest for the wicked
There's no song for the choir
There's no hope for the weary
If you let them win without a fight

If one heart can mend another
Only then can we begin
So won't you hold on a little longer
Don't let them get away

Lonely I, I'm so alone now

There'll be no rest for the wicked
There's no song for the choir
There's no hope for the weary
If you let them win without a fight
I let my good one down
I let my true love die
I had his heart but I broke it everytime

Lonely I, I'm so alone now

There'll be no rest for the wicked
There's no song for the choir
There's no hope for the weary
If you let them win without a fight
I let my good one down
I let my true love die
I had his heart but I broke it everytime

No Rest for the Wicked
  • This is the first single from I Never Learn, an album that was written in the wake of a broken relationship. Lykke Li said: "Every song on the album is a power ballad. Like one of those old radio stations. This is a slow dance; a slow burner."

"I wrote ["No Rest for the Wicked"] in Sweden when I was packing up my s--t, and I'd just gotten out of a relationship and it was a horrible time," Li added. "I just had the hurt, shame, sadness, guilt, longing. In the verse, I'm referring to myself pleading guilty but I'm referring to all of us."
  • During an interview with The Sun newspaper, the comment was made that the piano on this song has quite a hip-hoppy melody. The interviewer asked Li if this was deliberate? She replied: "Nothing I do is deliberate, whenever I create. I simply let go and pour out whatever I am feeling and visioning, like, whatever. I'm in the mood for – which in retrospect can be a cocktail mix full of inspiration."

"I think what I've always loved about hip-hop is the urgency, but the same goes for the blues," she continued. "Hopefully what I do is somewhere in between."
  • The phrase "No rest for the wicked" is a phrase originating from the Old Testament Book of Isaiah verses 48:22 and 57:20-21.

Isaiah 48:22 " 'There is no peace,' says the Lord, 'for the wicked.' "
Isaiah 57:20-21 "But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace," says my God, "to the wicked."

  • Bono is comparing relationships to an electrical storm. "Sure hope the weather will break soon" means hopefully the problems in the relationship will resolve. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA)
  • Bono: "It's about a couple in a room feeling a storm brewing in the sky outside and equating that to the pressure they feel in their relationship. I think it captures a sense of unease I feel around the world, especially in America, an air of nervous anticipation. It's not an overtly political song, but I don't think we could have written it before what happened in New York." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Europa Geht Durch Mich Lyrics

    Europa Geht Durch Mich
  • This song, whose title translates as 'Europe Passes Through Me,' is a duet with German actress Nina Hoss.
  • The track was recorded in Berlin's Hansa studios with producer Alex Silva, who previously collaborated with the Manics on 1994's The Holy Bible. Silva is the partner of Nina Hoss.
  • Manic Street Preachers previewed the song during their Spring 2014 UK tour.
  • The song was originally titled "European Miracle."
  • The song lifts its opening line ("Europe had a language problem") from "I Travel," the first track on Simple Minds' 1980 Empires and Dance album.

The Scottish New Wave band were an important influence on Futurology. "I always wanted to make something I thought could live up to the best tracks of albums two, three and four by Simple Minds," vocalist James Dean Bradfield told The Guardian with a self-conscious laugh. "Your love of something is the hardest thing to transfer sometimes. It's like having a parent: you recognise them in you, the older you get. I just kept thinking, 'this has got to come out in the wash.' And it finally did."
  • James Dean Bradfield told Mojo magazine that when he was writing the song's music he was guided by the mood of Nicky Wire's lyrics. "Europa Geht Durch Mich marches to its own logic, " he said. "you have to go with it. Strap on the Teflon and bash the f--- out of it! I was confronted by the presence of the words, which made the music confrontational."

    Runnin' Down A Dream Lyrics

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin'
Trees flew by, me and Del were singin' little Runaway
    I was flyin'

    Yeah Runnin' Down A Dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
    Runnin' down a dream

I felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days the rain was unstoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

    Yeah runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
    Runnin' down a dream

I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
There's something good waitin' down this road
    I'm pickin' up whatever's mine

    Yeah runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
    Runnin' down a dream

    Runnin' Down A Dream
  • In this song, Petty sings about driving into the great wide open, with nothing but glorious possibility in his path.

Petty started running down his dream of being a rocker in 1961 when he met Elvis Presley. Petty, 11 years old, came to the Ocala, Florida set where Elvis was working on the film Follow That Dream - a title Tom took to heart. In a brief encounter, Petty saw how Elvis captivated onlookers and made the girls go crazy. Petty became fascinated with Elvis and set out to follow his path.
  • The animated video was inspired by a comic strip called Little Nemo In Slumberland by Winsor McKay. Each strip told the story of one of Nemo's dreams, and at the end, he always woke up.
  • Full Moon Fever was listed as a Tom Petty solo album even though members of The Heartbreakers played on it. Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne also played on it.
  • Heartbreakers' guitarist Mike Campbell wrote this with Petty and Jeff Lynne. The three of them worked on the album at Mike's house. Tom and Mike were very impressed with Lynne's production techniques, and learned a lot from the experience. Mike gave us an example of Lynne's style: "We'd put the mics up on the drums, and he'd walk out and take the microphone over the drum and he'd turn it away from the drum facing the corner, and he'd go 'OK, record it like that.' Sure enough, 99% of the time he'd be right. We'd go, 'Yes sir, Mr. Lynne.' We learned so much from him about arrangements and countermelodies and all kinds of stuff." (Check out our interview with Mike Campbell.)
  • The line, "Me and Del were singin,' little 'Runaway'" is a reference to the 1961 Del Shannon hit "Runaway." Shannon is credited on the album for "barnyard noises," which can be heard just after this song ends on the album. Under the animal noises, Petty says, "Hello CD listeners. We have come to the point in this album where those listening on cassettes or records will have to stand - up or sit down - and turn over the record or tape. In fairness to those listeners, we will now take a few seconds before we begin Side 2. Thank you, and here is Side 2.
  • In 2007, the documentary Runnin' Down A Dream was released. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, the film chronicles the career of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played this at the halftime show of the Super Bowl in 2008. Rather than the usual medley of hits, the band played four full songs, the others being "American Girl," "I Won't Back Down" and "Free Fallin'."

Text Me in the Morning Lyrics

We danced a tango 'till our heads got dizzy
I felt your body heat: a damsel in distress
My daddy warned me not to get so busy
And suddenly I'm watching you take off your dress
    I couldn't stick around

So Text Me in the Morning
Tell me you still love me
    I don't believe a single word
You tell me you're tipsy; I tell you you're pretty
We could spend the night if you're still sure
But text me in the morning

Woke up all soaking wet from last night's fever
Smelling like cigarettes and broken promises
Your mother said: 'Don't be an overachiever.'
I please her, oh please girl, I never did believe her
And I'll never tell you why
Oh, I'll never tell a lie

So text me in the morning
Tell me you still love me
    I don't believe a single word
You tell me you're tipsy; I tell you you're pretty
We could spend the night if you're still sure
But text me in the morning

    Tears on my phone
    Feelin' so alone
I'll never let you go, you've got the best of me
When all the other boys just want your sex
    I just want your texts
    In the morning

    Right, in the morning

    C'mon c'mon c'mon

So text me in the morning
Tell me you still love me
    I don't believe a single word
You tell me you're tipsy, I tell you you're pretty
We could spend the night if you're still sure
But text me in the morning

We danced a tango 'till our heads got dizzy

    Text Me in the Morning
  • The Pop Psychology album has a loose theme about the challenges of navigating the dating world in the digital age. "Songs like 'Love in the 21st Century' and 'Text Me In The Morning' I think speak to sort of my generation and younger that are kind of experiencing romance through their phones and their computers," vocalist Tyler Glenn told MTV News. "I don't know how great it is, really."

"[Technology has] also kind of screwed up my love life a little bit because I'm 30 now and I just came out as gay and I'm trying to figure out how to navigate not having to use apps," he added. "Apps kind of become this hook up-based thing, even for my straight friends who use Tinder it's kind of like window-shopping. I don't know if that's essentially healthy for a passionate relationship with another human being."

    Applied Science Lyrics

Nod your head to this, as a lot of apprentice
Some of this were standing on the shoulder of giants
    Some tyrants, some benevolent
    To the followers, it's relevant
The rest get bent on lending opinions
I'm sending to a brand new level
I revel in completion, I like to see deletion
Of the parasites to make the load light
Fools know rules, but the rest keep bouncing back
With the lack of further adieu, see
As one can deduce, we kick out the jams
Slam the shit out hard and long
'Cause we got more song, dig it, check it

    Something you might like now
    All-star bound
    Yeah, you're so sound
Cool as the blue water all around
    From a force field flashing
    Aliens are sending
Black evolutions of love you are hearing
The dark supernatural is the world we call
Our own home lightning in the mind comes out in song
But we're wild, they say, "never trust us, we're shady"
In lieu of the crew you're into, we are, baby
'Cause music will be coming out the words we speak
We erect break beats shatter, wax still on the platter
Our shit is badder, we come, fly, then we scatter
'Cause we deep and we solid, yeah, we hear ya holler

Electricity running through is all that feels good
Sometimes the only thing that really ever could
Feed, that hunger, I crave it
I love it, I gave it
I shove it in a battery and save it for later
A waiter in the Dorothy C. Pavilion in '89
I met some weirdoes and had myself a real good time
Downtown L.A. is a soul graveyard
Where you got to be hard or get jacked
It lacked a certain sense of something
Something basic, no karma in he least I broke east
You know I had to face it
I guess I flaked but it was no mistake because 311's got the boom

My mike check is giving me Electric Company
I can't see the high wide sky or stars above me
Are you a flower, or more like a high rise tower?
If so, the soul of sweet delight on you will shower
There's a place for us they say is somewhere
Not a dream, but a place and you will be there
You're slippin', but content because your spirit And hills are alive,
    With the sound of music
People never see the whole trip of life
Grab knowledge, man, and all you do is syph

Hey heart on the road again
    Moving on forward
Sticks and stones won't break our bones
We're in a car on the highway
It's a magical feeling that no one's got a hold
You're a catalyst to your happiness you know

This is your heart it's alive
    It's pumping blood
And it's your heart it's alive
    It's pumping blood
And the whole wide world is whistling
    And it's whistling

Hey heart on the run again
    Driving strong forward
Sticks and stones won't take its course
You got the part in the front seat

It's the best and worst feeling like nothing can go wrong
You're the decider of the world that you will get to know

Cause it's your heart it's alive

    Pearl Necklace Lyrics

She's really upset with me again,
I didn't give her what she likes.
I don't know what to tell her,
    Don't know what to say.
    Everything got funky last night.

    She was really bombed,
And I was really blown away,
Until I asked her what she wanted,
And this is what she had to say:
    A Pearl Necklace.
    She want to pearl necklace.
    She want to pearl necklace.

She gets a charge out of bein' so weird,
    Digs gettin' downright strange.
But I can keep a handle on anything,
    Just this side of deranged.

    She was gettin' bombed,
And I was gettin' blown away,
And she held it in her hand
And this is what she had to say:
    A pearl necklace.
    She want to pearl necklace.
    She want to pearl necklace.

She is so tough, as pure as the driven slush.
And that's not true what she's talkin' about,
It really don't cost that much.

    She was gettin' bombed,
And I was gettin' blown away,
And she took it in her hand,
And this is what she had to say:

So is it just me, can everyone can see
The world drowning in its own blood?
    Humanity’s decline, dismantled over time
A fossil drying in the mud
Deception and the greed that germinates the seeds
    Of dissent growing all around
Is this the beginning or the end?
    In darkness we descend
And I can’t wait to see it all go down

Standing room only all the world will attend
Front row center to the ultimate end
    Mankind constantly parading its flaws
Tangled in charades of the orthodox laws
Like a firestorm raging out of control
Ignorance of all has taken its toll
It seems that blame is your personal hell
Dish it out to anyone but never yourself

All it wants a man to do is confess

You know you’re gonna have to stand and watch them bleed

    So many still ask why
    I’ve said a million times
There’s nothing godly looking over us
It’s just the choice you make
    I’ll still inject the hate
That brings finality to the fuss
    Society will bleed
    So watch the violence breed
    And deconstruct the protocol
    And if I’m proven wrong
I think you know the song
I’m pretty sure that God still hates us all

Standing room only all the world will attend
Front row center to the ultimate end
    Mankind constantly parading its flaws
Tangled in charades of the orthodox laws

  • The first new Slayer song in five years, the band debuted the tune at Revolver magazine's 2014 Golden Gods Awards. The tune was originally penned with the intention of being included on an unreleased EP that was supposed to coincide with the group's appearance on the 2012 Mayhem Festival tour.
  • The song features lyrics concerning the "extermination of mankind." "It's not directly connected to the Mayan Calendar, but everybody always talks about the world ending," guitarist Kerry King told Artist Direct in 2012. "Whether it's with war or disease, that's where I went with it."

Movin' On Up (Theme to The Jeffersons) Lyrics

Movin' On Up (Theme to The Jeffersons)
  • The Jeffersons was a spinoff of All in the Family in which the Bunkers' black next-door neighbors moved to a "deluxe apartment in the sky." This gospel-tinged song described their progression "on up." The show ran 1975-1985 and starred Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford. Roxie Roker, who played their neighbor Helen Willis, is the mother of Lenny Kravitz.
  • The gospel choir consisted of 35 black churchgoers. Despite the choir, the song is often covered by garage bands.
  • Ja'net Dubois wrote this song with the legendary songwriter Jeff Barry, who also sang backup vocals. Barry and his wife, Ellie Greenwich, composed several popular songs such as "Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Hearts?," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," "Baby I Love You", "Be My Baby," "The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget," "I Can Hear Music," and "River Deep, Mountain High."

Dubois said of this song: "I know about black folks movin' up. I've been there."
  • DuBois played the role of Willona Woods on another black sitcom, Good Times. Good Times was a spinoff of Maude, which like The Jeffersons, was a spinoff of All in the Family.
  • The Jeffersons featured TV's first mixed-married couple, a white husband and a black wife. It had its own short-lived spinoff, Checking In.
  • This is commonly played at sporting events when a team which has previously been doing poorly makes a startling comeback and hence moves back "up" to its previous status.
  • Nelly sampled this for his song "Batter Up" (the title was inspired by the line in this song, "Now it's our turn at bat"). "Batter Up" was a spoof of the media's enthusiasm for sports and also featured St. Lunatics and Murphey Lee.
  • When the first season of The Jeffersons was released on DVD, it was called "Movin' On Up." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)
  • In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, rapper Ludacris said, "That's every black person's favorite TV theme, because we movin' on up!"
  • This featured in commercial for Apartments.com that aired during the 2016 Super Bowl. In the spot, Jeff Goldblum (in character as Brad Bellflower) is hoisted up a building as he plays this song on a piano. On one floor, he spots a guy dressed like George Washington standing next to the rapper Lil Wayne (known as Weezy), and asks, "Is that George and Weezy," to which Wayne replies, "Who else would it be?" Turns out they're grilling beans, since as we known from this song, beans don't burn on the grill.

  • Kip Winger told AntiMusic the story of this song: "Reb (Beach, guitar) and I wanted to do a Progressive song. Something that summed up the Prog side of what we do, aka 'Rainbow in the Rose' or 'M16' but take it further," he said. "The Right hand keyboard riff, kind of fell into my hands, it's in 4/4 and Reb started played the ascending guitar parts instinctively in 5/4. Polyrhythm lends itself very well to this type of music."

"I went on the compose several other sections that Reb and I jammed over, the arrangement took about a day," Kip continued. "I had several lyric ideas but got stuck on finishing so I sent to by friend Donnie Purnell who sent back a version of my lyrics completed by him, Strangely without mentioning it to me, he wrote about PTSD and I had wanted to write about this for a while... It all turned out very synchronistic."

Album: No Prayer For the Dying
    Released: 1990

    Tailgunner Lyrics

Trace your way back 50 years
To the glow of Dresden, blood and tears
In the black above by the cruel searchlight
Men will die and men will fight, yeah|
Who shot who and who fired first?
Dripping death to whet the blood thirst
No radar lock on, skin and bone
The bomber boys are going home

    [Chorus: x2]
Climb into the sky never wonder why, Tailgunner
    You're a tailgunner

Nail that fucker kill that son.
Gonna blow your guts out with my gun
The weather forecast's good for war
Cologne and Frankfurt? Have some more|
Tail end Charlie in the boiling sky
The Enola Gay was my last try
    Now that this Tailgunner's gone
No more bombers (just one big bomb)

    [Chorus]

    Tailgunner
  • A sequel to Maiden's 1984 song "Aces High." It depicts the battle from another perspective. It was co-written by Bruce Dickinson and Steve Harris.
  • Contains the harshest profanity Iron Maiden has ever used in their song lyrics- the F-word.
  • Bruce Dickinson: "The title came from a porno movie about anal sex. Then I thought, well I can't write the lyrics about that, so I write it about real tailgunners. I had some words which began 'Trace your way back fifty years, to the glow of Dresden, blood and tears.' I know we shouldn't mention the war but it's about the attitude of bombing people. It was real death in the skies back then. But there aren't any tailgunners on planes anymore, it's all done by computers using missiles. At least it used to be man-on-man, but now it's machine-on-machine. Who uses bullets anymore?"
  • The first track off the album, it featured Dickinson imitating former vocalist Paul Di'Anno 's raspy singing style.
  • Dickinson sang the word "Fokker" (a plane term) in a way that sounded very similar to the popular expletive.
  • For the album that accompanied the release of the Iron Maiden computer game Ed Hunter, "Tailgunner," appropriately enough, was the last track- at the tail end. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for all above)
