Here Without You Lyrics

A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face.
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same.
All the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreamin' of your face.

I'm Here Without You baby
But you're still on my lonely mind.
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time.
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl, it's only you and me.

The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go.

I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind.
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time.
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, it's only you and me.

Everything I know, and anywhere I go,
It gets hard but it won't take away my love.
And when the last one falls, when its all said and done.
It gets hard but it won't take away my love.

I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind.
I think about you baby and I dream about you all the time.
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight, it's only you and me.

Here Without You
  • Lead singer Brad Arnold says he wrote this song with his (now-ex) wife as inspiration. He didn't write it for her - there's a difference. He laughs when he talks about how wrong he was with his declaration of "when the last one falls, when all is said and done." But then, who can possibly predict the future?
"The song's just about being away from someone, or missing them," he clarifies. "And it really doesn't matter if you're here without them for all day or all month. It's just kind of about the lonely and missing of somebody, but people kind of take that sort of as a little bit of a sad song. And in a way, I kind of meant it as a happy song. And the reason being because it's talking about being here without you, but she's still with me in my dreams. 'And tonight, it's only you and me,' so the song was really just about that dream. And being in a state of peace, because you've got that person there with you in your sleep. And in that way I kind of meant for it to be a little bit of a happy song." (Check out our full interview with Brad Arnold)
  • This is an important song to many military personnel who find themselves away from their loved ones with their lives in danger. 3 Doors Down bass player Todd Harrell told us that many of their songs are written in a way that is open for interpretation, and that "'Here Without You' is a song that a lot of military folks get a lot of things out of." He adds, "We're all from the Gulf Coast area and it is a military town. We all have friends and family who are in the military. We have a foundation here that the National Guard is a part of and we really want to support the men and women that give up so much to keep us free. We did tours overseas and have seen firsthand how much the men and women give up to go do what they do. Because they don't do it for the money. It's just our way of saying thank you, and our way of saying we support you and everything they do."
  • This was used by World Wrestling Entertainment for a video tribute to the late Eddie Guerrero. The video tribute was broadcast on the November 18, 2005 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown! on the UPN Network 5 days after Guerrero passed away. (thanks, Chris - Andover, MN)

    Hostiles Lyrics

    When the serve is done
    And the parish shuffled some
    And the May frequencies come
    To keep you away
    When your body aches
From the arms of dreams you keep
    And the hours passed by
    Just left on repeat

    It'll be a silent day
    I'll share with you
    Fighting off the Hostiles
    With whom we collude
    Hoping to find the key
    To this play of communications
    Between you and me

    When the LCD
Are all the player ones you can be
Put your foot down in the right hand lane
    If you are with me
    'Til the trains re-route
    And the rush-hour is come
    And the May frequencies
    Have sent you to sleep

    It'll be a silent day
    I'll share with you
    Fighting off the hostiles
    With whom we collude
    Hoping to find the key
    To this play of communications
    Between you and me

    Don't burn so
    Don't burn so
    Don't burn so late
    Don't burn so
    Don't burn
    Don't burn so late

    It'll be a silent day

  • Albarn told The Sun about this paean to 21st century ill-communication: "The hostiles are those characters in computer games that you just kill," he said. "They're completely soulless things given no character other than they're hostile to you."

"I felt the blankness of just kidding, the passive aggression that exists in computer games," Albarn continued. "It's kind of weird. However, I know I'm getting Grand Theft Auto 5!"
  • Damon Albarn told The Observer that he wrote this song after spending Christmas at his mother-in-law's house, "spending hours on the sofa playing The Dark Knight video game with my daughter, just zapping these endless characters with no real humanity."

    Southern Cross Lyrics

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(Around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
(Who knows she knows) Who knows love can endure
    And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name

    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(I've been around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
    Who knows love can endure
And you know it will, and you know it will yes

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do
    You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
    And the southern cross

    Southern Cross
  • The "Southern Cross" is a constellation also known as the Crux Constellation that can be viewed from most of the Southern hemisphere. The 4 brightest stars within the constellation form a cross pattern. Sailors have relied on the "Southern Cross" to help in navigating their boats. The national flags of Australia and New Zealand have versions of the Southern Cross on them.
  • This was written by Stephen Stills with help from Richard Curtis and Michael Curtis. In the CSN Boxed Set, Stills explained: "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce. It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it."
  • Jimmy Buffett covered this on his 1999 album Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. (thanks, Amy - Chicago, IL, for all above)
  • There is a vocal mistake in the line "But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day." One of the vocalists says "coming" on the first "promise." (thanks, Dave - Leesburg, VA)
  • Since this song is based on a song called "Seven League Boots," it bears mentioning that seven-league boots are a common magical artifact which crops up repeatedly in many European folk and fairy tales. They're a pair of boots which allow the wearer to take strides that are seven leagues (21 miles, 33.8 kilometers) long. The same concept of footwear that greatly increases one's traveling speed or stride is adapted into many role-playing and video games.
  • This same year that "Southern Cross" came out also saw David Crosby arrested on drug-related charges. He would be in and out of court on them numerous times until he finally turned himself in for an 8-month sentence.
  • The video for this song, with a ship a-sail, saw heavy rotation in the early MTV years, providing a soft rock respite from the European pop acts that dominated the network at the time.
  • The cover art for the Daylight Again album features an enigmatic domed structure on a rocky hilltop, flanked by three glowing blue flying saucers. The US was in the midst of a resurgence in UFO popularity in the late-'70s and early-'80s, bolstered by the writings of Chariots of the Gods author Erich von Daniken and renewed interest in Area 51.

    Knockin' On Heaven's Door
  • This song is written from the perspective of a dying sheriff: "Mama, take this badge off of me/I can't use it anymore/It's gettin' dark, too dark for me to see/I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door." Dylan wrote it for the 1973 western film, Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid. It plays while Sheriff Colin Baker is dying from his gunshot wounds. Dylan cameos in the movie as the character, Alias.
  • Guns N' Roses covered this on their 1991 album, Use Your Illusion II. They played it in 1992 at a tribute concert for Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, who had died of AIDS. 72,000 people attended the concert, which was held in London's Wembley Stadium. In case you're wondering, towards the end of the end of this version, the man on the telephone says, "You just better start sniffin your own rank subjugation Jack, 'cause it's just you and your tattered libido, the bank and the mortician, forever man and it wouldn't be luck if you could get out of life alive."
  • In 1996, Bob Dylan allowed Scottish musician, Ted Christopher, to record a new verse for "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," which Christopher had written in memory of the schoolchildren and teacher killed in the Dunblane massacre. This is one of the rare times Dylan has officially permitted someone to add to or change the lyrics to one of his songs. Christopher's version reached #1 in the UK.
  • Warren Zevon recorded this for his 2003 album The Wind. Zevon was dying of lung cancer when he recorded the track, and died shortly after the album was released.

This song has been covered in reggae style by multiple artists including G.T. Moore & The Reggae Guitars, Arthur Louis and Eric Clapton.

Other artists to have covered this song include Avril Lavigne, Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Cold Chisel, Neil Young and Aretha Franklin.
  • The title of the song was used as the original title for the Cowboy Bebop movie. Cowboy Bebop is a popular Japanese Anime that made a big hit in America when the dubbed version (done in the late '90s) was broadcast on Cartoon Network in 2001. Bebop was known for taking influences from pop culture (example: The title of episode 6 is "Sympathy for the Devil," obviously a take off of the Rolling Stones Song). When a full length Bebop movie was made in Japan, it was titled Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door. When it was dubbed and brought to theaters in America for a short time, they changed it to Cowboy Bebop: The Movie so Dylan wouldn't take any legal action against them. (thanks, Nick - Erwin, NC)
  • In October 2007, 1,730 guitarists in Shillong, India strummed this song for 5 minutes to set a world record for the largest ever guitar ensemble.
  • This song is musically similar to Neil Young's "Helpless," which was recorded in 1969 and features on the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album, DéjÁ  Vu.

Photographs (You Are Taking Now) Lyrics

When the photographs you're taking now
    Are taken down again
When the heavy clouds that hide the sun
    Have gone
The millions of us on the hill
From the star to lands end
    When photographs you're taking now
    Are taken now, press send

    This is a precious opportunity
Beware of the photographs you are taking now

We are flying over black sands
    In a glass aeroplane
Crashing in slow motion in another cityscape game
    Where the feeling is supernatural
    Like passing into other worlds
We're ending this dissolution when the mother-ship it explodes

When the photographs you're taking now
    Are taken down again
When the heavy clouds that hide the sun
    Have gone
The millions of us on the hill
From the star to lands end
    When photographs you're taking now
    Are taken now, press send

We were walking as zombies on over
To the church of John Coltrane
Arizona bus from sunset be freedom taking cocaine
In the paints and chords of nature
    All is but a vanity
And the metronome knows that defeats you is the monochrome that you seek

When the photographs you're taking now
    Are taken down again
When the heavy clouds that hide the sun
    Have gone
The millions of us on the hill
From the star to lands end
    When photographs you're taking now
    Are taken now, press send

    Photographs (You Are Taking Now)
  • Albarn explained the story of this song to The Sun: "When we had the eclipse in 1999, I went down to Devon, like everybody else," he said. "From my house down there, you can see a long way down the coast. It was a classic British moment – a white lead sky and/be no indication of an historic event. Everyone was taking photographs of NOTHING. That became the event, this endless flashing of light all the way down the coast. In this song, that's what I got the emotional tug from."

"The first verse is about a recurring childhood dream," Albarn continued. "I'm flying in this slowly crashing aeroplane and it would always fly over black sand beaches. In 1996 I was going through channels in some country, and saw a documentary about Iceland. There were black sand beaches and it was almost like a bell going off in my head. A couple of months later, I was in Iceland and it had a profound effect on me."

"The second part is about a bus journey (with Blur) from Los Angeles to San Francisco to see The Church of John Coltrane, a mad place dedicated to Coltrane," he added. "We were very, very excited about it and got there zonked out on a beautiful autumn morning at about seven."
  • The song contains a sample of writer Timothy Leary talking the listener through a trip on LSD. It is taken from the audio book The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

    Humans Being
  • This song (a rocker) was contracted for the soundtrack for the movie Twister by Van Halen. The band was supposed to have the first half of 1996 off. In that time, Eddie was going to have hip surgery, Alex was supposed to get his neck fixed and Sammy's wife was preparing to have their first child. They were convinced by Ray Danniels that this movie was huge and the money would carry them for he remainder of 1996.
  • Hagar had written a song called "The Silent Extreme," which Alex later renamed "Humans Being." There was a lot of friction between Sammy and the band because Sammy was in Maui with his pregnant wife and the others wanted him to fly to the studio and finish the song. Eddie pleaded with Sammy and said they needed only a minute and a half of lyrics added and he suggested "Bah, bah, bah. I hate this, I hate that, you dirty rat." Sammy said "that sucked." Sammy finally said okay, and came up with this line: "There is just enough Christ in me/To make me feel almost guilty/Is that why God made us breed/To make us see we're humans being." Sammy sang the song in three parts in about an hour and a half and split. This played a key roll in the end of the relationship between Hagar and Van Halen.
  • The phrase "Shine-on Shine-on" in the lyrics is similar to "We all Shine on" from John Lennons "Instant Karma." This phrase, according to Steven King, inspired his term for "to shine" in the film The Shining. In the film Twister, The Shining is being played in the drive in when a twister hits. Stay with me for just one more day

I have to make a move to somewhere miles away
The only hope we've got is just to smile and pray
    Another lesson learned
    Another page is turned
Give into your desire, say goodbye or play with fire, play with fire you'll get burned
    Another lesson learned
    Another page is turned
It's time I have to fly and then you say those precious words

    Stay with me
    Stay with me
Stay with me, stay with me for just one more day
    Stay with me
    Stay with me
Stay with me, stay with me for just one more day

You make me lose my focus and the time of day
Just one minute in your arms, the night, it flies away
    Another lesson learned
    Another page is turned
Give into your desire, say goodbye or play with fire, play with fire you'll get burned
    Another lesson learned
    Another page is turned

Stay with me, stay with me for just one more day
I'm falling for you, you've fallen for me
Stay with me, stay with me for just one more day

Oh I think loving you could be so easy
Oh I think loving you could be so easy

I rate that heavenly girl, she's a keeper
Should be taking her home, make it deeper
Take that leisurely stroll by the beach
Then I've gotta leave country, now apply Visa
I'm gonna bottle our love, take a litre
See you in a couple of weeks
We're like a couple of freaks in Ibiza
Even if we're sat on the sofa, you just won me over

    Stay with me
    Stay with me
Stay with me, stay with me for just one more day

One More Day (Stay With Me)
  • Example wrote this song with Technikal, who co-produced the entire Live Life Living album and Alex Smith of Metrophonic with whom he'd previously collaborated on "Watch The Sun Come Up."
  • Example: "Pianos as club hooks have worked well for me in the past so with this track I wanted to recapture some of that sunshine in my music. For me, 'One More Day' evokes all the great moments of 90s euphoria but I've put a bit of a twist on everything as it's 2014."

"I've also added a little 8-bar rap for an injection of energy. Some fans on Twitter were begging me to rap again after my last few singles were just singing.'"
  • This was originally going to be titled "Stay with Me" but Example later changed it to "One More Day (Stay with Me)" to avoid confusion with the Sam Smith song of the same name.
  • The single release features remixes from Shadow Child, MJ Cole, and Dutch newcomer Erik Arbores as well as an extended mix.
  • The song's music video was shot in Brighton. "Normally my videos are all about me, but I decided it would be nice to make my fans the focus this time," Example told MTV UK. "The video follows them on the way to the gig, on the pier, in cafes, in and out of pubs, drinking on the beach, and I don't even appear in the video until they get to the gig. Documentary style videos are always centred around the artist – 'here's Aviici in a club, here's Aviici in a fast car' and I wanted to get away from that."
  • Example credits his wife, the Australian model and actress Erin McNaught, with changing his life. He told The Sun: "Staying at home, just me and Erin, is a perfect night for me. I wish people knew how much I don't give a s--- about the hype and fame."

"In Erin, I have found a girl who just likes me for who I am and is happy doing simple things like watching a movie at home," Example continued. "So in 'One More Day,' that line about Ibiza sums it up ('We're like a couple of freaks in Ibiza. Even if we're sat on a sofa, you just won me over'). I'm just as happy with Erin in Ibiza as I am sat on a sofa and she cried when she heard that lyric."
  • Example told The Daily Mirror about writing the song with Alex Smith. "At the start we were trying to wrote a song from the girl's perspective, maybe Cheryl Cole or someone, but it didn't have the same lyrics as the final version, just that piano riff.," he said. "And then as I started falling in love with the song I decided I wanted it for myself, so we changed the lyrics so it was the guys point of view, and then I made the song about when I met Erin. We had this amazing romantic night together, 'a night of passion,' but I had to leave Australia and go back to the UK, and I didn't see her for like five weeks. Then I'd see her for a couple of weeks and then not see her for a month. She was in Sydney."

"And when you hear the lyrics, it all starts to make sense," Example continued. "In the rap breakdown it goes 'Got to leave the country now. Apply VISA'. It sounds a lot like the early nineties. Those house moments that got ripped off by boybands. We had to be careful not to get into Take That territory."

Come with me baby, be mine tonight

Pretty woman don't walk on by
Pretty woman don't make me cry
Pretty woman don't walk away, hey, okay
If that's the way it must be, okay
I guess I'll go on home, it's late
There'll be tomorrow night, but wait
    What do I see?
Is she walkin' back to me?
Yeah, she's walkin' back to me
    Oh, oh, pretty woman

    (Oh) Pretty Woman
  • Roy Orbison was writing with his songwriting partner Bill Dees at his house when he told Dees to get started writing by playing anything that came to mind. Orbison's wife Claudette came in and said she was going to go into town to buy something. Orbison asked if she needed any money, and Dees cracked, "Pretty woman never needs any money." Inspired, Orbison started singing, "Pretty woman walking down the street." Bill Dees recalls in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "He sang it while I was banging my hand down on the table and by the time she returned we had the song. I love the song. From the moment that the rhythm started, I could hear the heels clicking on the pavement, click, click, the pretty woman walking down the street, in a yellow skirt and red shoes. We wrote Oh Pretty Woman on a Friday, the next Friday we recorded it, and the next Friday it was out. It was the fastest thing I ever saw. Actually, the yeah, yeah, yeah in Oh Pretty Woman probably came from The Beatles."

In the same book Bill Dees recounts how the distinctive growling cry of "Mercy" came about: "I can't do that growl like Roy, but the "Mercy" is mine. I used to say that all the time when I saw a pretty woman or had some good food. Still do."
  • Orbison and his wife Claudette had recently reconciled after some tough times, but as this song was climbing the charts, Roy found out she had been cheating on him and filed for divorce. In 1966, they remarried, but two months later Claudette was killed when the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a truck. Orbison faced tragedy again when his two oldest sons died in a fire at his home in 1968. He was on tour at the time.
  • This was Orbison's last big hit. His career faded fast, but was revived in the '80s when prominent musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and George Harrison cited him as an influence and invited him to join various projects. He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and joined The Traveling Wilburys with Dylan, Tom Petty, Harrison and Jeff Lynne. As he was enjoying this career revival, he died of a heart attack on December 6, 1988 at age 52.
  • With his dark sunglasses and plaintive voice, Orbison gave the impression that he was always longing and sometimes miserable, which was not the case. Speaking with the NME in 1980, he explained what's going on in this song: "There's a ballad in the mid-section of it there: he's very sure of getting the girl when he first sees her, and then he's not so sure, and then he gets desperate, and then he says forget it, and then she comes back. It's quite complicated, but it's probably in the presentation, or if I'm really singing like I know I can and I'm doing the job that I should be doing, then it could be that the voice quality in parts has a melancholy something."
  • This was used in the 1990 movie of the same name starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. It also featured in the films Dumb and Dumber (1994) and Au Pair (1999).
  • In 1989, the controversial rap group 2 Live Crew recorded a parody of this song, using the alternate title "Pretty Woman" for their album Clean As They Wanna Be. The Crew sampled the distinctive bassline, but the romantic lyrics were replaced by talk about a hairy woman and her bald-headed friend and their appeal to the singer. Orbison's publisher, Acuff-Rose Music, sued 2 Live Crew on the basis that the fair use doctrine did not permit reuse of their copyrighted material for profit. The case, Campbell vs. Acuff-Rose Music, went all the way to the US Supreme Court. In 1994, the Court ruled that 2 Live Crew's parody did not violate federal copyright laws. • In 1964, Orbison was the only American artist to have a #1 UK hit, and he did it twice - with "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and "It's Over." (thanks, David - Akron, OH)

    Blood, Sweat, Tears
  • This song is directed at young people, and setting a good example for them. "I want to let little kids know that no matter what situation they come up in, that they're not exempt from success," Future told Billboard magazine. "All I ever wanted was for people to believe in me, and just recognize my potential. I came, I struggled, I made it, I conquered."
