Lakeside Park Lyrics

Midway hawkers calling
"Try your luck with me"
Merry-go-round wheezing
The same old melody
A thousand ten-cent wonders
Who could ask for more?
A pocketful of silver
The key to heaven's door

Lakeside Park
Willows in the breeze
Lakeside Park
So many memories
Laughing rides
Midway lights
Shining stars on summer nights

Days of barefoot freedom
Racing with the waves
Nights of starlit secrets
Crackling driftwood flames
Drinking by the lighthouse
Smoking on the pier
Still we saw the magic
Fading every year

Everyone would gather
On the twenty-fourth of May
Sitting in the sand
To watch the fireworks display
Dancing fires on the beach
Singing songs together
Though it's just a memory
Some memories last forever

Lakeside Park
  • The "Lakeside Park" is St. Catharine's, on Lake Ontario in Canada. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart lived very near Lakeside Park and spent summers as a child working and playing there. This song details his memories, his time spent there, and of how it used to be before they changed it.
  • The lyrics mention the "24th of May" - This is Victoria Day, commemorating Queen Victoria's birthday. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)
  • Neil Peart (from Traveling Music): "Another important setting in my childhood and early teens was Lakeside Park, in Port Dalhousie. When I was 14 and 15, I worked summers at Lakeside Park as a barker ('Catch a bubble, prize every time,' all day and night), and there was music: some of the kids brought transistor radios to work, and the music of that summer of 1966 played up and down the midway. At night, when the midway closed, we gathered around a fire on the beach, singing. Lakeside Park resonated in my life in so many deep ways, especially those fundamental exposures to music that would be forever important. It's all gone now. All that's left, apart from memories, is the old merry-go-round." (thanks, Rick - Omaha, NE)

    Warm Winds Lyrics

    Hey, hey glory child, hey

Hey glory child, don't you worry
    Stuttering, shaken off your fear
Beauty's never given in a hurry
So condescending, leave your questions here
Hey glory child, don't you worry
I can see your skeleton so clear
Doubting's only made your visions blurry
You're better off just looking in the mirror

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

I am shooting stars you will never see me
    Watching over your every mistake
Digging out of graves is never easy
Handing you my shovel, here to take
Always playing catch me if you can
Gingerbread you heard I'm sweet to taste
Close your eyes let go and count to ten
I'll keep track of every moment wasted

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away
Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away
Dear God make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away

Call your phone on a late night
I recall your soul had a taste like
    Gardens, flowers, Warm Winds

    The clouds below your feet
    Quit clipping on your wings
Sometimes we hate to leave somebody
    Whats happening to we?
Warm winds on a space ride
When I call your phone on a late night
I recall your soul had a taste like
    Gardens, flowers, Warm Winds

    The clouds below your feet
    Quit clipping on your wings
Sometimes we hate to leave somebody
    Whats happening to we?
Warm Winds on a space ride

Sometimes, I call your name out loud
Just to make sure it's you
Sometimes, I crack my veins open
Just to see if it's blue
    You clean me up

Show me a better way, I wish you could
Show me a better way, I wish you would
    Come home today, you could
    Come home today

Sometimes I bite my lips and close my eyes
    Just to pretend it's you
Long live, lonely thoughts on Thursday nights
That's when I think of you
    We were all thirteen once
Long live tramp stamps and Pepper Ann
You will never judge me for that
You will always love me for that

Warm Winds on a space ride
When I call your phone on a late night
I recall your soul had taste like...
    Gardens, flowers, Warm Winds

  • Solana Rowe is an American singer-songwriter from Maplewood, New Jersey who is better known as SZA. She first met members of Top Dawg Entertainment, the record label housing rappers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and their Black Hippy crew, during the CMJ 2011. A friend attending the show with her persuaded TDE president Terrence "Punch" Henderson to listen to some of her material, which he liked. In July 2013 it was announced that SZA was the first R&B act on the TDE roster.
  • SZA recorded much of her debut Z album in Carson, California during the summer of 2013, where she shared accommodation with labelmate Rashad. The pair became friends and collaborated on each other's songs. SZA sang the hook on Rashad's 2013 single "Ronnie Drake" and Rashad returned the favor on this Mac Miller co-produced track.

"Him and all his producers would kick open my door in the morning and jump on the bed and light blunts at 9 AM," SZA recalled to Billboard magazine. "Now we're each other's security blanket, in a way. We just get each other really well."

    Lovely Day Lyrics

When I wake up in the morning, love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes
    And something without warning, love
    Bears heavy on my mind

    Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me
    Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be
    A Lovely Day
    A lovely day

When the day that lies ahead of me
    Seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me
Always seems to know the way

    Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me
    Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be
    A lovely day
    A lovely day

When the day that lies ahead of me

    Lovely Day
  • Skip Scarborough was a songwriter and producer who worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Patti Labelle, LTD, and many other R&B stars before his death in 2003. He wrote the music for this song, and was also the inspiration for the lyrics Withers came up with. In our interview with Bill Withers, he explained: "Skip was a very nice, gentle man. The way Skip was, every day was just a lovely day. He was an optimist. If I had sat down with the same music and my collaborator had been somebody else with a different personality, it probably would have caused something else to cross my mind lyrically. It was a combination of the music and the person and the ambiance in the room."
  • Withers told us: "We're all sponges in a sense. You put us around very nice people, and the nice things come out in us. You put us around some jerks, and we practice being jerks. We all adjust. Did you ever notice the difference in the way you speak to your grandmother or your best contemporary friend? If I had sat down with the same music and my collaborator had been somebody else with a different personality, it probably would have caused something else to cross my mind lyrically."
  • In 1999, this was used in a series of very popular commercials for The Gap, where it helped sell a lot of Khakis. Many people discovered the song because of the commercial.
  • Near the end of the song, Withers holds a note for 18 seconds... "Lovely Daaaaaaaaay." This might be the longest held vocal note of any hit song.
  • In 1992, a group called The Soul System remade this into a dance song that was used in the movie The Bodyguard. It wasn't the first time one of Withers' songs was made into a dance hit - in 1987 Club Noveau had a #1 hit with a cover of "Lean On Me."
  • Artists who have covered this include Clarence Carter, Hootie & the Blowfish and Take 6. Luther Vandross also recorded it with Busta Rhymes on Vandross' last album Dance With My Father.

We Like the Zoo ('Cause We're Animals Too)
  • This song from The Walkmen multi-instrumentalist Walter Martin's children's album We're All Young Together features The National singer Matt Berninger listing various animals he happens to not be. However Berninger goes on to say that he likes seeing the animals at the zoo as, "I recognize something that's inside of me."
  • Martin told NME that the tune, "is my tribute to the lost art of the novelty song. Songs like 'Poison Ivy' and 'Yakety Yak' - all those Leiber and Stoller masterpieces - are a big part of my life. I didn't want to put my name on an album that didn't have room for that kind of song."

    Cygnus X-1 Lyrics

    In the constellation of Cygnus
There lurks a mysterious, invisible force
    The Black Hole
    Of Cygnus X-1

Six stars of the northern cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
    Nevermore to grace the night

    One
    Invisible
    To telescopic eye
    Infinity
The star that would not die

    All who dare
    To cross her course
    Are swallowed by
    A fearsome force

    Through the void
    To be destroyed
    Or is there something more?
    Atomized, at the core
    Or through the Astral Door
    To soar

    Two
I set a course just east of Lyra
    And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
    Sailed across the Milky Way

    On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
    Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
    Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
    Nearer to my deadly goal
    Until the Black Hole
    Gains control

    Three
    Spinning, whirling
    Still descending
    Like a spiral sea
    Unending

    Sound and fury
    Drowns my heart
    Every nerve
    Is torn apart

    Pre-Road Downs Lyrics

    I have kissed you
    So I'll miss you
On the road I'll be wantin' you

    But I have you
    'Cause I love you
And you have me 'cause you love me too, yeah

    Felt forsaken
    You'll awaken
To the joys of livin' hand in glove

    And then I will
    Lend you my will
And your days will be filled with love

    Don't run the time approaches
    Hotels and midnight coaches
Be sure to hide the roaches

    Felt rejected
    As expected
You rejected all the thoughts of words

    So I'll pray with
    You to stay with
Me forever and we'll make it work

    Elevated
    You're elated
'Cause I've waited a year for you

    If you're thinkin'
    What I'm thinkin'
Then I'm gonna make my love to you

    Don't run the time approaches
    Hotels and midnight coaches
Be sure to hide the roaches

    Pre-Road Downs
  • Crosby, Stills & Nash first sung together during an informal jam at the house of Cass Elliot. The trio were so fond of the Mamas And The Papas' singer that she sung backing vocals on this song during the part that goes "Hotels and midnight coaches. Be sure to hide the roaches."

"She insisted, and with good reason," Nash recalled to Uncut magazine in 2014. "Nobody else would have the balls to do that, that we loved her dearly. So we agreed."

"I've always thought that Cass understood intuitively what the sound of me, David and Stephen singing together would sound like, and when she introduced me to them, she knew they were trying to put something together," Nash added.

Cass Elliot was the only person outside of the trio who sang on the Crosby, Stills & Nash album.
  • David Crosby commented to MusicRadar.com of this Graham Nash penned tune: "A Nash song after he realized that he could write rock 'n' roll – fierce rock 'n' roll."
  • The backwards guitar was played by Stephen Stills. Said an admiring Crosby: "This is real backwards guitar, and how he got it match up to the forwards stuff, I have no idea. He did it, and we looked him and thought, This guy is from f---ing Mars! I'm still freaked out by it."

    YYZ Lyrics

    YYZ
  • YYZ is the transmitter code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Every airport is assigned a unique 3 letter code, and that code is always being transmitted so that pilots can tell, roughly, where they are and verify that their navigational radios are tuned properly. These codes are also written on your luggage tags when you fly. The intro to the song is Morse code for "YYZ."
  • This was nominated and was the runner up for the Best Rock Instrumental award in the 1982 Grammys. It lost to The Police's "Behind my Camel."
  • In the March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine, Alex Lifeson explained the bizarre-sounding harmonics heard before the solo: "I create them by playing off the pick and my thumb. I hold the pick so there's a slight edge of it showing between my thumb and finger. This allows my thumb to mute the string, and that's what causes the harmonic to ring." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 3)
  • The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002. (thanks, Jason - Commack, NY)
  • Geddy Lee's bass performance on this song has been praised by many websites and magazines as one of the best in rock history. Some fans believe his bass playing is better when he's not singing. (thanks, Evan - flower mound, TX)
  • This was one of the few songs used on the PS2 game Guitar Hero 2 that was not a remake by Wavegroup. (thanks, Billy - A Place, AL)
  • The song has also featured as a downloadable song in the Rock Band series, and as the only instrumental on the Guitar Hero: Smash Hits game. Geddy Lee told the The Plain Dealer newspaper in a 2011 interview how the tune's use in video games has opened up a whole new fan base for Rush: "It's interesting how that song's been reborn through video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. We're getting all these 11-, 12-, 13-year-old kids coming to our shows because they discovered our music through those games. And I think one of the big reasons is 'YYZ.'"

    Don't Lyrics

I met this girl late last year
She said Don't you worry if I disappear
I told her I'm not really looking for another mistake
I called an old friend thinking that the trouble would wait
But then I jumped right in a week later returned
I reckon she was only looking for a lover to burn
But I gave her my time, for two or three nights
Then I put it on pause until the moment was right
I went away for months until our paths crossed again
She told me I was never looking for a friend
Maybe you can swing by my room around ten
Baby bring the lemon and a bottle of gin
Well be in between the sheets 'till the late AM
Baby if you wanted me then you should have just said
    She's singing

    Don't fuck with my love
    That heart is so cold
    All over my own
I don't wanna know that babe
    Don't fuck with my love
    I told her, she knows
    Take aim and reload
I don't wanna know that babe

For a couple of weeks I only want to see her
We drink away the days with a take away pizza
Before a text message was the only way to reach her
Now she's staying at my place and loves the way I treat her
Singing out Aretha, all over the track like a feature
And never wants to sleep I guess that I don't want to either
But me and her we make money the same way
Four cities, two planes the same day
And those shows have never been what its about
Maybe well go together and just figure it out
I'd rather put on a film with you and sit on the couch
But we should get on the plane or we'll be missing it now
Wish I'd have written it down, the way that things played out
When she was kissing him how
    I was confused about
    She should figure it out
    Why I'm sat here singing

    Don't with my love
    That heart is so cold
    All over my own
I don't wanna know that babe
    Don't fuck with my love
    I told her, she knows
    Take aim and reload
I don't wanna know that babe

    On my hotel door
I don't even know if she knows what for
She was crying on my shoulder
    I already told you
Trust and respect is what we do this for
I never intended to be next
But you didn't need to to take him to bed, that's all
And I never saw him as a threat
Until you disappeared with him to have sex of course
Its not like we were both on tour
We were staying on the same hotel floor
And I wasn't looking for a promise or commitment
But it was never just fun and I thought you were different
This is not the way you realize that you want it
It's a bit too much too late if I'm honest
And all this time God knows I'm singing

    Don't fuck with my love
    That heart is so cold
    All over my own
I don't wanna know that babe
    Don't fuck with my love
    I told her, she knows
    Take aim and reload
I don't wanna know that babe

    Don't fuck with my love
    That heart is so cold
    All over my own
I don't wanna know that babe
    Don't fuck with my love
    I told her, she knows

    Don't
  • This angsty breakup tune is about an ex, and Sheeran doesn't hold back with how he feels about her. "The story in 'Don't' is 100 percent true," Sheeran told Billboard magazine. "I could have gotten nastier - there was more s--t that I didn't put in. I was seeing someone for a bit of time, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs. And I feel like: Treat people how you want to be treated."
  • Speaking with MTV News, Sheeran refused to name the mystery person that the song is directed at, but is sure they will know who they are. "I've always been the sweet, innocent, 'Oh my God, he's English!' kind of thing, so having a bit of bite," he told MTV News, "I don't know how that's going to go down, but based on the reaction of people that have heard it, I think it will go down just fine."
  • Fans have speculated that the song could be about Ellie Goulding. Sheeran dated the "Burn" singer during the summer of 2013. She was rumored to have been seen kissing One Direction's Niall Horan at the V Festival around the same time.

Some of the speculation that Goulding is the subject of the song was because of the lyrics, "We make money the same way. Four cities, two planes the same day," and "You were looking for a lover to burn." Not only does Sheeran allude to the pair having the same career, but he also includes the word "burn," the title of Goulding's hit single.
  • Littering the lyrics with possible clues is a hallmark of Sheeran's friend Taylor Swift. He confirmed to Rolling Stone that the Country-Pop princess is not the subject of the song. "It's 100 percent not about Taylor," he said. "Taylor's one of these people that if you piss her off and she writes a song about you, it's not good news for you. I've never dated Taylor. I've dated a few singers, though."

Sheeran did play the song for Swift after writing it. He said: "She was just like, 'Whatever happens, ever, between us as friends, I never want to piss you off that much.'"
  • The song was co-produced by Benny Blanco, who has worked on hits from such pop artists as Katy Perry and Maroon 5. and production legend Rick Rubin (Johnny Cash, Run-DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers), who is known for his naturalistic approach. "I loved elements of both," Sheeran told Billboard, "and I knew that together they could make something really super-powered, between Benny's pop sensibility and Rick's raw, earthy, gravelly coolness. So Benny went to LA and sat with Rick."
  • This was set to be the lead single from Sheeran's x album until early March 2014, when it was decided that "Sing" would be the first song to be released from the project. With a chorus hinged on the lyric "Don't f---- with my love." the change of mind was most likely prompted by a wish to give Sheeran's young fans something less sweary as a first release.

Also Sheeran was struggling with coming up with a clean radio edit. "I tried other words, I tried 'mess,' I tried 'funk,' lots of other things, but none of them worked," he laughed to MTV News. "But I'm definitely giving radio an edit they can play, because I'd be mental not to."
  • Sheeran debuted the song on the April 12, 2014 episode of Saturday Night Live. He also performed "Sing" on the same show.
  • Ed explained the story of the song during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "With that song... I'm a carefree, happy guy and I feel like everyone goes through things that annoy them and they get angry, and I feel the way I get my anger out is to write songs," he explained. "And that song was literally, I felt something, I put it down and I felt a lot better afterwards."

"I wasn't going to put it on the record and then people kept telling me it was an alright song, 'cause it is a good song, so it ended up on the record," Sheeran added. "But yeah, that one's a bit personal."
  • The song has a very strong vocal hook: the "ahhh lite a lalala" (sp.) that opens the track and plays throughout. This nonsensical utterance is a key musical element, filling the space between key moments in the song. Since it's not comprised of real words, it's quite versatile, allowing the listener to imagine what could be said at these moments.

By putting this vocal in the intro, it establishes the sound, which then is used to tie the whole thing together. Other songs that put their vocal hooks upfront include "Habits (Stay High)" by Tove Lo and "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson.
  • Sheeran told The Daily Telegraph that he forewarned the woman in question. "I just said, 'just so you know, there is a song.' And they said, 'expected that.' 'Cause of the situation. You know, I didn't lie at all. It's 100 per cent true," he explained.

"I actually shied away from some of it," Sheeran added. "But for me in my head, that song is enough getting even. And the fact that it will stay anonymous, is good for me. I've written a song about it and I've leveled the playing field."
  • It was Benny Blanco who persuaded Sheeran to record the tune for x. "I wrote the song just to get it out of my system," he told Digital Spy . "I wrote it as a sort of therapeutic thing and left it, but then Benny kept ringing me up like, 'Yo, I'm just in the studio with so-and-so' - then naming some big name - 'they really f--k with the track. You need to do something with it.' I was like, 'I might, I might'. I had so many people from all angles telling me I should do something with it, so it ended up on the record."
  • Prior to the release of x, all swearing was cut from the album, which meant this song had to be heavily edited. Sheeran tweeted: "My whole album is clean, I took all of the explicit lyrics out after a taxi driver convinced me to do it for his daughter. That's the truth."
  • Speaking with Capital FM, Sheeran said that he quickly moved on from the episode recounted on this song, explaining: "With that track, I only felt that way for a week, and then I made my peace with it and got on with it."

"It just happened that that song was alright and I wanted to put it on the album," he continued. "But I don't have any bitterness towards that situation at all. I literally got over it within the week and the song just stuck around."
  • Asked by Billboard magazine what sound he was after with this song, Sheeran replied: "It was me trying to make a sort of '90s hip-hop jam in the sense of telling a story. So, how hip-hop tends to work, you have three verses: The first verse is the set-up, the second explains the situation, and the third is the outcome, with a chorus in between each."
  • This soundtracked a commercial for Beats By Dre. The ad shows Sheeran wearing Solo 2 headphones while constructing the song in a hotel room.

    Dancing Queen Lyrics

    Dancing Queen
  • This was written by ABBA members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. According to ABBA's official site, it was conceived as a dance song with the working title "Boogaloo." They drew inspiration from the 1974 George McCrae disco hit "Rock Your Baby," and from the drumming on the 1972 album Gumbo by Dr. John . Their manager Stig Anderson came up with the title "Dancing Queen," and after several months working on the track, ABBA came up with arguably the world's first europop disco hit.
  • ABBA recorded this about a year before it was released. It was written and recorded around the same time as "Fernando," which was chosen as the single. They knew "Dancing Queen" would also be a hit, so they held it until the album was released before issuing it as a single.
  • ABBA performed this song on June 18, 1976 at a televised tribute to Queen Silvia and King Gustaf XVI of Sweden, who were married the next day.
  • This was the only one of ABBA's 14 US Top 40 hits to make it to #1.
  • Regarding the lyrics, "Night is young and the music's high," many listeners interpret this as a statement that the music makes you feel high. In ABBA's part of the world, however, it simply means that the music is loud.
  • Along with many other ABBA songs, this was featured in Muriel's Wedding, a hit Australian movie starring Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. (thanks, Katie - Australia)
  • According to the BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, when this song was played at a Windsor Castle event Queen Elizabeth said: "I always try to dance when this song comes on because I am the Queen and I like to dance."
  • This song also reached #1 in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Rhodesia, South Africa, Sweden and West Germany. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • When Benny first played Frida the song's backing track, she burst into tears. "And that was before me and Agnetha had even sung on it!" she smiled to The Guardian. "I knew it was absolutely the best song Abba had ever done."
  • This came top of a 2014 poll conducted by Blinkbox concerning the most commonly misheard lyrics in Pop. 22% of the people polled admitted they had mistaken the lyric "See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen" for, "See that girl, watch her scream, kicking the dancing queen."
  • Chris Stein of Blondie says that his group's 1979 hit "Dreaming" is "pretty much a cop" of "Dancing Queen."
  • U2 covered this during the band's Zoo TV tour in 1992, and were joined onstage by Bjorn and Benny when the show hit Stockholm. "ABBA have a purer joy to their music," Bono explains in the documentary ABBA: The Winner Takes It All, "and that's what makes them extraordinary."
  • The American disco singer Carol Douglas covered this song in 1977, taking it to #110 in America. The other two covers to chart are by ABBA clones A*Teens (#95 in 2000) and the Glee Cast (#74, 2011).

    Crash on the Highway
  • Hurray for the Riff Raff is a New Orleans based music collective that was formed by singer-songwriter and guitarist Alynda Lee Segarra. This song was based on an actual traffic jam caused by a car accident. Segarra told Uncut magazine: "The road is my natural habitat. I've been traveling since I was a child, and in the past, it was a journey I enjoyed more than a destination. These days, however, it's the show I look forward to, so that song is a lot about that change in my mindset."

"It's also about finally feeling at home in New Orleans and how it feels to have a home base to miss while I'm on the road," she added.

    Hook Lyrics

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks

Because the Hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
    The hook brings you back
    On that you can rely

    There is something amiss
    I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow

Was that the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
    The hook brings you back
    On that you can rely

Suck it in, suck it in, suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
    And then begin to see
    What you're doing to me
This MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me

So desperately I sing to thee of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feeling on the shelf
I've tried, well no, in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much pride inside
    To hide or slide
I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride till until I've died
And only then shall I abide by this tide
    Of catchy little tunes
    Of hip three minute diddies
I wanna bust all your balloons

I wanna burn of all your cities to the ground
But I've found, I will not mess around
    Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day
    Hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
    That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
    I don't rely on luck

Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
    The hook
    On that you can rely

    Hook
  • Put simply, the song is a sort of satire. A hook is the part of the song that people like; the part that makes you remember the song. Normally it's the chorus, but not always. Lead singer John Popper, who wrote this song, is saying that no matter what you put in a song, if it has a hook people like, you can say whatever you want and people will like the song and buy into it - "It doesn't matter what I say as long as I sing with in-FLEC-tion." He knows that a hit song needs to have a catchy hook, whether or not it takes any talent or emotion. "The hook brings you back" is the hook of the song, so he can say whatever he wants in this part and get away with it. The message is that you don't need deep, meaningful lyrics to make people like your music. You need a good hook, and it helps to be charismatic. On a deeper level, this can relate to superficial society in general, which is demonstrated in the video which shows beauty pageant contestants and a politician singing the song - they're all show and no substance, but most people don't notice or care.
  • This song's entire melodic line is directly based on a piece of classical music: Pachelbel's "Canon in D." The well-recognized melody can also be considered an aural "hook," giving the title another amusing twist. (thanks, Ianna - Richmond, VA)
  • This was the follow up to Blues Traveler's first hit, "Run-Around." The band formed in high school in 1986 and released their first album 1990. Four was their fourth album, released in September, 1994. By the time "Hook" hit the charts, the album had been out for about a year.
  • The second verse contains an interesting bit of wordplay, with Popper singing, "To confuse the issue I refer to familiar heroes from long ago," before getting into the Peter Pan story, as he sings about Captain Hook trying to bring Peter Pan back to Neverland - another way the "Hook" brings you back. Popper puts a lot of literary references in his songs, also mentioning Rin Tin Tin and Anne Boleyn in this one. When we spoke with Blues Traveler guitarist Chan Kinchla, he told us that the Peter Pan story was a favorite of the band. "I think all musicians in rock bands have kind of a Peter Pan complex," he said. "We always loved that innocent wonder and that vibe."

  • In October 2008, Rachel Reece was hit and killed by a drunk driver in Lula, Georgia. Rachel was Issues singer Tyler Carter's best friend, high school sweetheart and singing partner. This song is a dedication to Rachel and it took him four days to write – the result of much soul-searching and dredging up of painful memories.

"Every day in the move, would just lose it," he told Kerrang! magazine. "I was crying and so lost in the song. It just wasn't perfect enough, so I had to rewrite and rewrite. At the time I was physically incapable of finishing takes, and we used some of that. You can actually hear me losing my s--t on there."
