Band On The Run

McCartney wrote this song in response to drug laws that criminalized him and his friends (including fellow "bands on the run" Eagles and Byrds). "We're not criminals," he explained. "We just would rather do this than hit the booze - which had been a traditional way to do it. We felt that this was a better move."

Shortly after the Band On The Run album was released, McCartney told Melody Maker: "The basic idea about the band on the run is a kind of prison escape. At the beginning of the album the guy is stuck inside four walls, and eventually breaks out. There is a thread, but it's not a concept album."

Asked if this was a reference to Wings escaping from The Beatles, he replied: "Sort of – yeah. I think most bands on tour are on the run."

The song begins in a metaphorical prison ("stuck inside these four walls..."). Where the orchestra comes in is where McCartney envisioned a hole being blasted in one of the walls, and the subsequent escape.

Paul McCartney combined pieces of different songs to make this one. The Beatles did a lot of this on their Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road albums, since it provided a way to use unfinished songs. "A Day In The Life" is a good example of two Beatles songs combined to make one.

During a lengthy meeting with executives at The Beatles' Apple Records, George Harrison complained, "If I ever get out of this house." McCartney remembered the line and used it years later in this song.

McCartney recorded the album in Lagos, Nigeria along with his wife Linda and guitarist Denny Laine. The other Wings decided not to make the trip, which worked out fine in the end: McCartney considers the album his best post-Beatles work. He told Word in 2005: "I was on drums and guitar a lot, mainly because the drummer decided to leave the group the night before and one of the guitar players decided not to come! So we got that solo element into an otherwise 'produced' album."

This song was used to nice effect in the movie The Killing Fields, where a young woman with a transistor radio listens to this in the wake of a brutal US bombing of a Cambodian village when suspected rebels are being rounded up and shot. The song exemplified the contrast between the sort of druggy, frivolous Pop culture of the 1970s West and the stark realities of the Third World at the same time. (thanks, Louis - Camden, NJ)

History shows this song to be a forebear of the "Yacht Rock" genre, which is made up of intricate soft rock classics that bear repeated listening. The leading Yacht Rock cover band, the Yacht Rock Review, includes the song in their set. Their vocalist Nicholas Niespodziani says it's the most deceptively difficult song in the Yacht Rock rubric. "It just has a lot of stops and starts and different twists, and then the vocals are really high at the end," he told us . "So it's a pretty high level of difficulty I would say."

This is a track from Doves vocalist Jimi Goodwin's first solo album, Odlukek. The song was first demoed in 2004 as a possible track for Doves' third album Some Cities.

Goodwin told NME: "There's this lyric, 'Watch out, you living now. Time to tear those posters down,' which is about a teenager realising that young adulthood might not be all it's cracked up to be, or a young gay person dealing with coming out. I see my teenage daughter now having her ups and downs, and it reminded me how tough those years can be."

Didsbury is a Manchester suburb frequented by Goodwin in his youth.

Jimi Goodwin wrote the song with Paul Weller sideman Simon Dine. He told Q magazine: "Simon is properly great. He's really into sample culture, finding mad bits in old '60s records."

Son Of A Preacher Man

This song is about a young girl who sneaks away with the preacher's son every time his dad comes to visit. This "Son of a Preacher Man" woos her and teaches her about love. He is the only boy she has ever loved.

This was written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins. Dusty's version is the most popular, but it has been covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley, Bobbie Gentry, Foo Fighters, Chet Atkins, Joss Stone, and Natalie Merchant. The song was originally offered to Aretha Franklin (who is a preacher's daughter), but she turned it down because she thought it was disrespectful. Dusty Springfield was born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien in London on 4/16/1939. She died in 1999 or breast cancer. Shortly before her death she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was given the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

The backup vocals were by a female group called the Sweet Inspirations, who were made up of Cissy Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith and Estelle Brown. They were the sought-after female backup vocalists in the New York area, having performed on albums by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Van Morrison and many others. With four singers, they could create a rich, soulful sound that suited this song perfectly.

Later in 1969, the Sweet Inspirations went to work for Elvis Presley, touring and recording with him. Cissy Houston left the group at this time so she could spend more time with her children, including her young daughter, Whitney Houston.

There is a drink called a "Son Of A Preacher Man." It's made with peppermint schnapps, vodka or gin, and lemonade.

This was used for a key sequence in the movie Pulp Fiction, which made the song popular again in 1994. Director Quentin Tarantino said he would have cut the scene if he hadn't been able to get the rights to the tune.

The rap group Cypress Hill sampled this at the beginning of their song "Hits from the Bong."

Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker's son Jay Bakker has written an autobiography titled Son Of A Preacher Man. The Bakker's were televangelists who were disgraced in the late '80s when it was revealed that Jim had an affair with Jessica Hahn and bilked his followers out of lots of money. Jim Bakker went to jail for tax evasion.

This was also featured in the 2000 thriller Frequency, starring Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. The song is skipping on a record player in a dead girl's apartment.

Me was recorded between many trips and overnight stays at the hospital that Jo Dee Messina undertook to be with her mom as she went in and out of intensive care following open heart surgery. Following her operation, the songstress took her mother home so she could care for her. Messina also had to juggle her normal touring commitments and mommy duty for her own two young children. This song expresses what the singer went through.

"There's a line in it at the end of the chorus that says, 'I'd trade all this real just to feel like a kid again,'" she told Taste of Country "I couldn't get through the line because I would have at any moment traded all the real at that point to be a kid again."

"There were days Julian King (co-producer) would send me home," she added. "He would be like, 'Not today. You're too tired. You're too run down. I can hear it in your voice.' And so he would call it."

Paula released 2 other singles before this came out. "Knocked Out" and "The Way You Love Me" established her as a dance singer, but this was her breakthrough hit.

Before she was a singer, Abdul was a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers and a dancer. She had a knack for creating dance moves that went over well on MTV and became an in-demand choreographer after working with Janet Jackson on videos for "Nasty," "When I Think Of You," and "What Have You Done For Me Lately." She went on to work with ZZ Top, Duran Duran and Debbie Gibson before starting her own career as a singer.

In the US, this was the best selling single of 1989.

"Straight Up" was a popular phrase at the time that could be dropped into just about any conversation - "I'll meet you at 6pm, straight up" or "That was straight up the worst Rocky movie ever."

The video was directed by David Fincher, who also directed Madonna's "Vogue" and The Wallflowers' "Sixth Avenue Heartache." Fincher directed the movies Seven, The Game and Fight Club. The clip won MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video, Best Dance, Best Choreography and Best Editing.

After this became a hit, Paula went on tour with some other popular MTV acts. This was the tour where Milli Vanilli were caught lip-synching when their tape skipped during a show in Connecticut.

In 2005, Abdul was "Caught in a hit-and-run." After swiping a car on a Los Angeles freeway, she drove off, but someone took a picture of her license plate with a cell phone camera. She was fined and sentenced to probation.
