Don't Drag Me Down Lyrics

Children are taught to hate, parents just couldn't wait
Some are rich and some are poor, others will just suffer more
Have you ever been ashamed and felt society try to keep you down?
I begin to watch things change and see them turn around

[Chorus:]
Turn around, they'll try to keep you down
Turn around, Turn around
Don't Drag Me Down

Ignorance like a gun in hand, reach out to the promised land
Your history books are full of lies, media-blitz gonna dry your eyes
Have you ever been afraid, and felt society try to keep you down?
I begin to watch things change see them turn around

[Chorus]

Ignorance like a gun in hand
Reach out to the promised land
Your history books are full of lies,
Media -blitz gonna dry your eyes
You're eighteen want to be a man
Your granddaddy's in the Ku Klux Klan
Taking two steps forward
And four steps back
Gonna go to the White House
And paint it black

[Chorus]

Don't Drag Me Down
  • Social Distortion lead singer Mike Ness said: "This is a song about ignorance and racism and the astounding fact that it still exists. This song is also about the government cover-ups and lies. When I hear the truth about our forefathers, I'm ashamed. They don't mention in school that our forefathers exterminated a whole Native American race. I experience discrimination all the time. I know what it's like to be discriminated against - being seated in the back of a restaurant because of my tattoos. It's cruel but people still judge you by the way that you look and I am reminded daily that commercial and mainstream ideals are quite different from my own."

    Coming Clean Lyrics

Seventeen and strung out on confusion
Trapped inside a roll of disillusion
I found out what it takes to be a man
Now mom and dad will never understand

Secrets collecting dust but never forget
Skeletons come to life in my closet
I found out what it takes to be a man
Now mom and dad will never understand
    What's happening to me

Seventeen and Coming Clean for the first time
I finally figured out myself for the first time
I found out what it takes to be a man
Now mom and dad will never understand
    What's happened to me

  • Front man Billie Joe Armstrong has stated that this song is about coming out of the closet. Billie Joe himself stated, "I think I've always been bisexual" in a 1995 issue of The Advocate. He also brings up his thoughts on the issues of heterosexuality and homosexuality in the music world. (thanks, Lauren - Laurel Springs, NJ)
  • More from the Advocate interview with Billie Joe: "I think mostly it's been kept in my head. I've never really had a relationship with another man. But it is something that comes up as a struggle in me. It especially came up when I was about 16 or 17. In high school people think you have to be so macho. People get attacked just because someone insinuates something about their sexuality. I think that's gruesome." (thanks, Elvira - Moscow)

Between a Laugh and a Tear Lyrics

When paradise is no longer fit for you to live in
And your adolescent dreams are gone
Through the days you feel a little used up
And you don't know where your energy's gone wrong
It's just your soul feelin' a little downhearted
Sometimes life is too ridiculous to live
You count your friends all on one finger
I know it sounds crazy just the way that we live

Between a Laugh and a Tear
Smile in the mirror as you walk by
Between a laugh and a tear
And that's as good as it can get for us
And there ain't no reason to stop tryin'

When this cardboard town can no longer amuse you
You see through everything and nothin' seems worthwhile
And hypocrite used to be such a big word to you
And it don't seem to mean anything to you now
Just try to live each and every precious moment
Don't be discouraged by the future forget the past
That's old advise but it'll be good to you
I know there's a balance see it when I swing past

Between a laugh and a tear
Smile in the mirror as you walk by
Between a laugh and a tear
And that's as good as it can get for us
And there ain't no reason to stop tryin'

Between a laugh and a tear
Smile in the mirror as you walk by
Between a laugh and a tear
And that's as good as it can get for us

Between a Laugh and a Tear
  • Scarecrow was Mellencamp's eighth album, and by then he had paid his dues and become one of the most successful musicians in America. Despite his triumphs, he was going through severe emotional difficulties at the time, including a panic disorder. In this song, he explores that dichotomy - how success can simply amplify your emotions, both good and bad.

Mellencamp has a notorious temper, which he says is the result of a condition he suffered from as a child: spina bifida. "I had a hole in my spine and all my nerve endings were on the outside of my body," he told Rolling Stone. "They were all exposed to air, so it's no wonder I go up and down so quickly."

    Toy Soldiers Lyrics

It wasn't my intention to mislead you
It never should have been this way,
    What can I say?
It's true I did extend the invitation,
I never knew how long you'd stay,
    When you hear temptation call
    It's your heart that takes,
    Takes the fall

Won't you come out and play with me?

    [Chorus]
    Step by step,
    Heart to heart
    Left, right, left
    We all fall down
    Like Toy Soldiers
    Bit by bit torn apart,
    We never win,
    But the battle wages on
    For toy soldiers

It's getting hard to wake up in the morning,
    My head is spinning constantly,
    How can it be?
How could I be so blind to this addiction?
    If I don't stop
The next one's gonna be me
    Only emptiness remains,
    It replaces all the pain.

Won't you come out and play with me?

    [Chorus]

    (We never win)

    Only emptiness remains (ahh)
    It replaces all the pain,

Won't you come out and play with me?

  • This is about drug addiction and how drugs can control you like children control their toys - Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" has a similar theme. In an interview that aired on VH1, Martika said that she wrote this song about a friend who was hooked on cocaine. (thanks, Camille - Toronto, OH)
  • Martika (her real name is Marta Marrera) was born in May 1969 in Whittier, California. Her Cuban parents left their home country during a revolution. Martika started acting before launching a recording career, appearing in the film version of Annie in 1982 and on the TV series Kids Incorporated from 1984 to 1986. In 1988 her first single, "More Than You Know," landed on the American charts; a year later, this was released as the follow up." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

    Everywhere is freaks and hairies

Till there are no rich no more?

I'd Love To Change The World

Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

    World pollution, there's no solution

  • Austin's lead single from his The Secret album features rapper Pitbull, and received its radio debut during Elvis Duran's January 24, 2013 morning show.
  • Austin performed the song live for the first time at Pepsi's #PEPCITY Super Bowl XLVIII kick-off party in New York City on January 29, 2013 and then two days later on Good Morning America.
  • The song featured in an Aquafina FlavorSplash commercial starring Austin that premiered during the Grammy Awards telecast on January 26, 2014.
  • The chorus samples Chicago house music artist Lidell Townsell's 1992 single "Nu Nu," which reached #26 on the Hot 100.
  • The song's music video finds Austin and Pitbull moving through an enclosed room accompanied by some females. The clip is a homage to Jamiroquai's 1996 visual for "Virtual Insanity."

"We kind of had that idea and were kind of like, man, we could take a little spin-off of that and make it our own kind of version," Austin told Fuse TV. "We basically built a room and the room kept moving around. I ran into the wall a couple of times."

Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands Lyrics

With your mercury mouth in the missionary times,
And your eyes like smoke and your prayers like rhymes,
And your silver cross, and your voice like chimes,
Oh, do they think could bury you?
With your pockets well protected at last,
And your streetcar visions which you place on the grass,
And your flesh like silk, and your face like glass,
Who could they get to carry you?

    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I put them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheets like metal and your belt like lace,
And your deck of cards missing the jack and the ace,
And your basement clothes and your hollow face,
Who among them can think he could outguess you?
With your silhouette when the sunlight dims
Into your eyes where the moonlight swims,
And your match-book songs and your gypsy hymns,
Who among them would try to impress you?

    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I put them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

The kings of Tyrus with their convict list
Are waiting in line for their geranium kiss,
And you wouldn't know it would happen like this,
But who among them really wants just to kiss you?
With your childhood flames on your midnight rug,
And your Spanish manners and your mother's drugs,
And your cowboy mouth and your curfew plugs,
Who among them do you think could resist you?

    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

Oh, the farmers and the businessmen, they all did decide
To show you the dead angels that they used to hide.
But why did they pick you to sympathize with their side?
Oh, how could they ever mistake you?
They wished you'd accepted the blame for the farm,
But with the sea at your feet and the phony false alarm,
And with the child of a hoodlum wrapped up in your arms,
How could they ever, ever persuade you?

    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

With your sheet-metal memory of Cannery Row,
And your magazine-husband who one day just had to go,
And your gentleness now, which you just can't help but show,
Who among them do you think would employ you?
Now you stand with your thief, you're on his parole
With your holy medallion which your fingertips fold,
And your saintlike face and your ghostlike soul,
Oh, who among them do you think could destroy you?

    Sad-eyed lady of the lowlands,
Where the sad-eyed prophet says that no man comes,
My warehouse eyes, my Arabian drums,
Should I leave them by your gate,
Or, sad-eyed lady, should I wait?

Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands
  • This song is about Sara Lownds, who was Dylan's wife at the time. The title of the song was created from her name: SAd eyed lAdy of the LOWlaNDS.
  • On the song "Sara" from the album Desire, Dylan sings: "Staying up for nights in the Chelsea Hotel writing Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands for you." In his book Revolution in the Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan 1957-1973, Clinton Heylin writes that most of the song was written in an 8-hour stretch in a Nashville studio while the musicians waited for Dylan to finish it. Said Dylan: "It started out as just a little thing, but I got carried away somewhere along the line."
  • This took up the whole fourth side of the album, but it didn't need to as it is just under 11-minutes long. But if Blonde On Blonde had not been a double album, some other album would hold the title of first double album ever released. (thanks, Ed - Perth, Australia, for above 2)
  • When Dylan finally called the band members he hired in to record this song, it was 4 a.m. Typical of Dylan, he didn't tell them much about the song - he just had them play. They were surprised when the song kept going for 11 minutes, and more surprised when Dylan was happy with the first take.
  • The video to the right is from "The Denver Tapes," recorded March 1966. In this recording, Dylan calls this "The best song I ever wrote." (Thanks, Edna - Madrid, Spain)

  • The first single from MercyMe's Welcome To the New album finds MercyMe frontman Bart Millard encouraging Christians to rejoice in their salvation and new life in Christ. He said: "This is about enjoying the fact that we're changed. It's about having the joy and living life that way – Christians are supposed to have joy."
  • Millard explained the song's meaning in a video interview: "I know its a little bit of a departure from what we normally do, but we're just having a good time," he said. "The idea was, that we understand who we are in Christ, we understand our identity, and it would be hard to sit still. So we thought that was a great song to kick off the whole record."

    Blackened
  • This is about the end of the world as written in The Bible. It also deals with pollution, deforestation and other social problems. (thanks, Ryan - Ireland)
  • The Intro was recorded by reversing the guitars and using several overdubs. (thanks, JT - Tullahoma, TN)
  • This is one of three Metallica songs (along with "My Friend Of Misery" and "Where the Wild Things Are") that was co-written by Jason Newsted, who was their bass player from 1986-2001. ...And Justice for All was the first studio album he played on with the band, and "Blackened" was the first track he helped write.

Composing the song with James Hetfield was a special moment for Newsted, as he was still a bit starstruck and thrilled to find himself kicking around ideas with the Metallica frontman. In our interview with Jason Newsted , he told the story:

We were in my one-bedroom apartment. I had my little four-track Tascam set up in the corner of the bedroom, and we were jamming on our guitars, just playing through some riffs. I played that "Blackened" riff, and he goes, "Dude, what is that?" Because it was really pretty crazy. The original thing is a very fast alternating thing. Man, it's pretty tricky, actually. I mean, the one that ended up on the record is pretty tricky, too, but the original one is really tricky.

He picked up on that and we recorded that bit. And he goes, "Let's build it to this, and build it to this." It was a moment. I was actually composing a song with James from Metallica and he was approving my riffs and saying, "This is going to be a Metallica song." That was a big, big moment for me. We had already been on tour together, and so I had a giant Damage Inc. tour poster on my bedroom wall right above my little station where I had my speakers and my little four-track and the two or three guitars in my collection.

And there we were, I could paint that picture for you very plainly. It was a very, very big moment for me, because I was getting approved from The Man to have my first chance on having one of my compositions on a Metallica record. So that was a very special time.

    The Summer Jam Lyrics

    The Summer Jam
  • This is a cut from Periphery's experimental EP, Clear, on which each band member composed a track. This was the tune penned by guitarist and programmer Jake Bowen and he told Artist Direct the story of the song. "I had a bunch of riffs when we were touring on Summer Slaughter 2012," he said. "There was a little Roland Micro Cube. They had it on the bus. I picked up the guitar, and I was jamming on the same tempo and feel. I came up with a lot of riffs for that song then. I decided that would be my track for the EP when we went in to record it. It's really just a collection of riffs from that tour that I held on to and I felt really represented my style. It's also got an upbeat and positive vibe to it whereas everybody else's is pretty dark and pissed-off sounding."
