Crying In The Rain Lyrics

I'll never let you see
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my Crying In The Rain

If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You'll never know that I still love you
So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Raindrops falling from heaven
Will never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I'll wait for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see

Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain

Crying In The Rain
  • Written by Howard Greenfield and Carole King, this was the Everlys' first hit with a song from the Brill Building stable of songwriters.

King, writing with her usual partner Gerry Goffin, had just previously come from two top-charting successes: "Run To Him" and "Take Good Care Of My Baby," both for Bobby Vee. Al Kirshner, co-producer at Aldon Music, had originally intended "Run To Him" to be for the Everly Brothers, but Vee's producer had snagged that song, too. Kirchner had been eager to produce a hit for the Everlys since his first day in business, so this was a dream come true for him.
  • This was recorded shortly before Don and Phil Everly were inducted into the Marine Corps Reserves on November 25, 1961. On February 18, 1962, the duo performed the song in full uniform on The Ed Sullivan show, and on March 3, the song reached its peak of #6 on the US charts. Don and Phil got out of the Corps on May 24, after 6 months of service. It was the only Everly Brothers song released during their time in the military.
  • This was the Everly's first Top-10 hit song in a year. As a gesture of gratitude, they found out that producer Don Kirshner's favorite snack was peanuts, so they shipped him a fifty pound sack. Talk about working for peanuts!
  • Shortly after this song came out, the performance rights organization Broadcast Music, Inc., held their annual awards to honor the most-played songs of the year. Out of the 90 awards handed out that night, Aldon Music took home 12, four times more than any other music publisher. So this song comes from a golden age of the Brill Building music era.

    Air Balloon Lyrics

Somebody remind me where I am
    Miami or Timbuktu?
Did I ever tell you my uncle's monkey ran away from the zoo?
Would you tell me what this all means?
What happens if I go through that door?
'Cause I'm looking up at the ceiling, but it's turning into the floor

When I'm bored, I, kinda drift away,
I'm not sure, quite, why we work all day
I've been thinking, and I've got this plan

    Let's go, right now

Come meet me in the sky I'll be waiting for you
And we can't hear what they say
Up in my Air Balloon, air balloon, air balloon (ha)
Sing, sing along, along any song you want to
Now we're so high, it can't rain
Up in my air balloon, air balloon, air balloon (ha)

I don't like dropping names but Kurt Cobain is all in my face
How the hell am I gonna tell him Elvis already took first base?
In and out of the blue this cruise is losing altitude, all we need
Is a little more elevation, take me back to where I can breathe

When I'm bored, I, kinda drift away
I'm not sure, quite, why we work all day
I've been thinking, and I've got this plan

    Let's go, right now

Up in my air balloon, air balloon, air balloon
Sing, sing along, along any song you want to
Now we're so high, it can't rain
Up in my air balloon, air balloon, air balloon (ha)

Shake it, sha-shake it, shake it now
    Gimme, gi-gimme, gimme some
    Sailing sa-sailing through the clouds
    Trippin' trip trip it now

Shake it, sha-shake it, shake it now
    Gimme, gi-gimme, gimme some
    Sailing sa-sailing through the clouds
    Trippin' trip trip it now

Come meet me in the sky I'll be waiting for you

  • This tongue-in-cheek bubblegum pop tune finds Allen singing about escaping reality over a toy piano arrangement:

"I'm not sure quite why we work all day
I've been thinking and I've got this plan
    Let's go, right now
Come meet me in the sky I'll be waiting for you."

Allen penned the tune with Johann Shellback. The Swedish hitmaker's other writing credits include Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble."
  • Speaking to Capital FM about the song, Allen said: "I suppose it's about escapism really, and daydreaming in a lot of ways. My husband is constantly infuriated with me, because he'll be talking to me when we're sitting down having dinner or something, and I'm looking at him, but I'm totally not paying any attention at all."
  • The video was shot in Cape Town and directed by That Go (Noel Paul and Stefan Moore). Allen was criticized by some religious groups for the end part where she is seen dodging a floating crucified Jesus on outer space and by animals rights organisation PETA for the use of exotic animals.

Allen commented to chat show host Graham Norton: "I signed up for it as it sounded like fun and then I am there with a cheetah thinking, 'what am I doing?'

"I had a steak wiped on my face," she added, "so that it would lick me but I had been warned not to eat steak the night before in case I burped and he might have eaten me!"
  • The Sheezus title references Kanye West's 2013 album Yeezus. "It's an homage, not a piss take," tweeted Allen.

    Sunshine Superman Lyrics

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
    Could've tripped out easy a-but I've a-changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it but in a while
You're gonna be mine, I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine

    I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

    Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
    I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got a-nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
'Bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine

    Sunshine Superman
  • Donovan first met his future wife, Linda Lawrence, in 1965 when she was recovering from a broken relationship with Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones. The pair dated briefly, but not wanting the scrutiny and uncertainty of being a pop star's girlfriend all over again, Lawrence broke it off at the end of the year. Donovan responded with this song.

"It's not a normal love song, the singer told Mojo magazine June 2011. "On the face of it, the song is about being with Linda again. But sunshine is a nickname for acid. The Superman is the person capable of entering higher states because it's not easy to go into the fourth dimension and see the matrix of the universe in which everything is connected.

The line, 'everybody's hustling' referred to the pop scene at the time, where you could lose yourself very easily. Gyp (Mills - Donovan's lifelong friend and tour manager) would always keep my feet on the ground; we had left home at 16 to busk so we could see fame for what it is."
  • Donovan was good friends with The Beatles, and they were both making very innovative and trippy music at the time. Donovan's producer Mickie Most told him not to play the Sunshine Superman album to Paul McCartney under any circumstances, because he knew McCartney would be tempted to do something similar.

Donovan recalled to Uncut magazine: "My arse was being sued by Pye after Sunshine Superman so , my masterwork, sat on the shelves for seven months. If you date it, it was at least a year and a half before Sgt Pepper and I remember Mickie saying to me, 'Don't play it to McCartney' but of course everybody was sharing with everyone else and nicking from each other."

"I played it to McCartney anyway," he continued. "But they were already there, anyway, and George Martin was doing something similar with The Beatles, working out arrangements from ideas they had in their heads. George Martin was The Beatles' guy and John Cameron was my guy and they both had an appreciation of jazz which was key."

Originally, the "Sunshine Superman" single was subtitled "For John And Paul," a reference to Lennon and McCartney.
  • Jimmy Page played lead guitar on this. Page was a session musician at the time.
  • Donovan was recording for Pye Records when he was working on this. Pye also had Mickie Most under contract, but he moved to CBS before the album could be released. This prompted a lawsuit that delayed release of the album, so it didn't come out in the US until September, 1966, and wasn't released in the UK until 1967. This was unfortunate for Donovan, because this would have been considered much more innovative if it was released on schedule.
  • This was one of the first ever overtly psychedelic pop records. Donovan played down the drug implications of the song, but they were certainly implied: "Sunshine" was a name for LSD.
  • This was Donovan's first collaboration with arranger, musician and jazz fan John Cameron, who developed a new sound for him. Cameron played the harpsichord on this recording.
  • In the video for The Beatles "A Day In The Life" you can see a close up of "Sunshine Superman" playing on a spinning turntable.
  • Donovan had a fleeting love affair with the model Linda Lawrence in 1965. He bumped into her four years later and they married in 1970. Donovan said in an interview with The Guardian newspaper May 24, 2005, "Linda's in all the songs. 'Sunshine Superman,' 'Hampstead Incident,' 'Young Girl Blues'... Linda's the muse."
  • Learn more about Superman in the Song Images .
  • This was used in the 2010 "Snow Trip" television commercials for the Honda Accord.
  • The song was Donovan's only single to reach #1 on the Hot 100 . "Gypsy Dave [Donovan's creative companion] and I went off to Greece with about three quid in my pocket," he recalled to Billboard magazine. "The phone rang, and Ashley Kozak, my manager, said 'Get yourself back to Athens, you've got a first-class ticket to London. 'Superman''s released and it's #1 all over the world.'"
  • Imani Coppola sampled the instrumental track for her 1997 single "Legend of a Cowgirl," which peaked at #32 in the UK.

    Sleeping With a Friend Lyrics

    All my friends
    They're different people
Anxious like the Ocean in the storm
    When we go out
    Yeah, we're electric
Coursing' through our bodies til we're warm

And why mess up a good thing baby?
It's a risk to even fall in love
So when you give that look to me
    I better look back carefully
    'Cause this is trouble
    Yeah, this is trouble

    I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping With a Friend

    All my friends
    Stay up past midnight
Looking for the thing to fill the void
    I don't go out
    Much like I used to
Something about the strangers and the noise

And why leave when I got you baby
It's a risk but babe, I need the thrill
I never said you'd be easy
But if it was all up to me
    I'd be no trouble
    Yeah, we're in trouble

    I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping with a friend
    Sleeping with a friend

    We are both young
    Hot blooded people
    We don't wanna die alone
    To become one
    It could be lethal
    Sleeping with a friend

    All my friends
    All my friends
    All my friends
    All my friends

    Oh I said, ooh ooh
You got me in the mood mood
I'm scared but if my heart's gonna break
    Before the night will end
    I said, ooh ooh
    We're in danger
    Sleeping with a friend

    (All my friends)
    Sleeping with a friend

    Sleeping With a Friend
  • The first single to be released from Pop Psychology is an ode to friends with benefits. "It's the sex song that I kinda know how to write," Neon Trees singer Tyler Glenn said in an interview with KROQ's Kevin & Bean. "I don't know how to write an S&M-fueled Rihanna banger because I don't think our sex lives are… I don't think most people's sex lives are 'Blurred Lines,' or that kind of swingers party."
  • This cautionary tale of hooking up with someone you're close with is something Glenn experienced, but wouldn't necessarily recommend. "I'm an awkward guy and so it's not about me trying to desperately hook up," he explained to Radio.com . "It's more about…the danger involved and the risk. So it's very dorky. It's a dorky song."
  • Tyler Glenn came out as gay shortly before the Pop Psychology album was released. He admitted that this song is about an old friend - who is straight - that he had a crush on for years. Glenn said that he had lost touch with this person and wasn't sure what kind of reaction he would get.
  • Despite Tyler Glenn coming out as gay, most of the pronouns on the Pop Psychology songs and the love interests in their videos remain female. "I don't think pronouns matter really with music because music is so universal," Glenn told MTV News.

Glenn added that women are not always the love interests they seem in the band's work. For instance, regarding this song's music clip, he said. "Technically I'm sort of running from this girl in the video. Not to make women out to be bad, but… I kind of spent my life trying to date girls when in reality it just wasn't my nature."

    Why Georgia Lyrics

I am driving up 85 in the
Kind of morning that lasts all afternoon
    Just stuck inside the gloom
4 more exits to my apartment but
I am tempted to keep the car in drive
    And leave it all behind

    Cause I wonder sometimes
    About the outcome
    Of a still verdictless life

    [Chorus]
    Am I living it right?
    Am I living it right?
    Am I living it right?
    Why, Why Georgia, why?

I rent a room and I fill the spaces with
Wood in places to make it feel like home
    But all I feel's alone
It might be a quarter life crisis
Or just the stirring in my soul

    Either way I wonder sometimes
    About the outcome
    Of a still verdictless life

    [Chorus]

So what, so I've got a smile on
But it's hiding the quiet superstitions in my head
    Don't believe me
    Don't believe me
When I say I've got it down

Everybody is just a stranger but
That's the danger in going my own way
I guess it's the price I have to pay
Still "everything happens for a reason"
Is no reason not to ask myself

    [Chorus]

    Why Georgia
  • This song is about a growing trend among the North American population. After graduating from university, adults are now going through second adolescence since, for the most part, they wait until their 30s to get settle down, get married and have kids. This explores these feelings of drifting, feeling like you don't really have a purpose in your life.
  • Mayer wrote this song when he was living in Atlanta, Georgia. He was having his doubts on whether he would be successful and if he should leave Atlanta. In the song, he states that he's tempted to keep driving in the car and leave everything behind.

Well you’re not from around here
    You’re probably not our kind
It’s hot from March to Christmas
    And other things you’ll find

    Won’t fit your old ideas
    Their line is shifting sands,
You walk across a ghostly bridge
    To a crumbling promise land

    [Chorus]
    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I guess I’ll start at the beginning
    The World Of Strange Design

Well I’d like to have the ocean
But I’d settle for the rain
    Humbly as for true love
There was such a price to pay

This room was filled with trouble
    And sacraments deceived
And I’m with you, we’re in the shade
    Of his weeping willow tree

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise
I’ll have to go back to the beginning
In this world of strange design

    We talk about your drinking
    But not about your thirst
You set off through the mine field
Like you were round in first

    So open up their window
    And hand the baby through
Point up towards the ghostly bridge
And she’ll know what to do

    If Jesus came from Mississippi
    If tears began to rise

Rime Of The Ancient Mariner Lyrics

Hear the Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
See his eye as he stops one of three
Mesmerizes one of the wedding guests
Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea.

And the music plays on, as the bride passes by
Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale.

Driven south to the land of the snow and ice
To a place where nobody's been
Through the snow fog flies on the albatross
Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings.

And the ship sails on, back to the North
Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on.

The mariner kills the bird of good omen
His shipmates cry against what he's done
But when the fog clears, they justify him
And make themselves a part of the crime.

Sailing on and on and north across the sea
Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm.

The albatross begins with its vengeance
A terrible curse a thirst has begun
His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner
About his neck, the dead bird is hung.

And the curse goes on and on at sea
And the curse goes on and on for them and me.

"Day after day, day after day,
we stuck nor breath nor motion
as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
    Water, water everywhere and
    all the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink."

    There calls the mariner
There comes a ship over the line
BUt how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide.

    See...onward she comes
Onward she nears out of the sun
    See, she has no crew
She has no life, wait but here's two.

Death and she Life in Death,
They throw their dice for the crew
She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now.
    Then, crew one by one
they drop down dead, two hundred men
    She, she, Life in Death.
She lets him live, her chosen one.

"One after one by the star dogged moon,
too quick for groan or sigh
each turned his face with a ghastly pang
and cursed me with his eye
    four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan)
with heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
they dropped down one by one."

The curse it lives on in their eyes
    The mariner wished he'd die
    Along with the sea creatures
But they lived on, so did he.

and by the light of the moon
He prays for their beauty not doom
    With heart he blesses them
God's creatures all of them too.

Then the spell starts to break
The albatross falls from his neck
Sinks down like lead into the sea
Then down in falls comes the rain.

Hear the groans of the long dead seamen
See them stir and they start to rise
    Bodies lifted by good spirits
None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes

And revenge is still sought, penance starts again
Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on.

Now the curse is finally lifted
And the mariner sights his home
spirits go fromhe long dead bodies
Form their own light and the mariner's left alone.

And then a boat came sailing towards him
It was a joy he could not believe
The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit,
Penance of life will fall onto him.

And the ship sinks like lead into the sea
And the hermit shrives the mariner of his sins.

The mariner's bound to tell of his story
To tell this tale wherever he goes
To teach God's word by his own example
That we must love all things that God made.

And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man
And the tale goes on and on and on.

    Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
  • This was inspired by and based on the 1797 poem of the same name by Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), a contemporary of William Wordsworth and William Blake (whose work was the inspiration and basis of Bruce Dickinson's solo album The Chemical Wedding). In the poem, the captain (The Ancient Mariner) tells the story of how his ship was driven south by storms and the strange happenings that followed. The moral of the story is that "we should love all creatures created by God."

Love Alone Is Worth The Fight Lyrics

Love Alone Is Worth The Fight
  • This was one of two lead singles (alongside "Who We Are") from Fading West. The song was overwhelmingly supported at radio, with all 55 Christian adult contemporary stations that report to Nielsen Soundscan playing the single in its debut week - the first time this has happened.
  • The song was inspired by a comment made by Charlie Peacock, the producer who signed Switchfoot to their first record deal. Frontman Jon Foreman recalled to CCM magazine that he, "sat us down one time and began to tell us what he had learned over the years. He told us, 'You can sell millions of albums, you can be #1 on radio charts, you can win Grammys and more - but at the end of all of this, none of that matters as much as the people around you.'"

Foreman continued: "'Love Alone is Worth The Fight.' For me this title sums up the past 15 years of our time as a band- nothing else is worth the fight, worth the struggle, worth the scars," Foreman added. "Nothing else even comes close. Not sex, not drugs, not even rock and roll. From time to time we all come to those difficult moments of struggle- when life becomes a fight. Maybe we are depressed and can't seem to find a way out. Or maybe we're dealing with the loss of someone we love. And maybe in that existential moment we begin to wonder what we're living for, what we're aiming for, what we're struggling for."

"Yes, there are dark times when I fear the unknown. I fear pain, I fear humiliation, I'm afraid of the unknown within myself.," he continued. "But reacting blindly, driven by our fears leads us to horrible places. Maybe fear is love's true opposite. Racism, genocide, religious wars- these are fueled by fear. Most of my worst decisions, including hatred, are fueled by fear. But perfect love casts out fears. Perfect love brings us to a place of strength where we can accept the people and situation around us rather than fear it or deny it."

    Season Of The Witch Lyrics

When I look out my window,
    Many sights to see.
And when I look in my window,
So many different people to be
    That it's strange, so strange.

You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
Mmm, must be the Season Of The Witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.

When I look over my shoulder,
What do you think I see?
    Some other cat looking over
    His shoulder at me
And he's strange, sure he's strange.

You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
Beatniks are out to make it rich,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.

You've got to pick up every stitch,
The rabbits running in the ditch,
Beatniks are out to make it rich,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch.

When I look out my window,
What do you think I see?
And when I look in my window,
So many different people to be
    It's strange, sure is strange.
You've got to pick up every stitch,
You've got to pick up every stitch,
The rabbits running in the ditch,
Oh no, must be the season of the witch,
Must be the season of the witch, yeah,
Must be the season of the witch.
When I look, when I look.

    Season Of The Witch
  • One of the first songs to fit the "psychedelic" genre, Donovan recorded it in May 1966, shortly before his highly publicized arrest for possession of marijuana.
  • The genesis of this song goes back to an evening at folk music notable Bert Jansch's house in north London, when fellow acoustic master John Renbourn showed Donovan a D ninth chord. From that Donovan built up a riff that, according to the memories of those present, he then played solidly for the next seven hours.

"There was a feeling, even then, that all was not perfect in the Garden of Eden," he said of the song in an interview with Mojo magazine June 2011. "Dealers were moving into bohemia and hard drugs were on the fringes. The song was also prophetic. It was about the bust, although of course I couldn't know that then."
  • During Led Zeppelin's soundchecks, they often warmed up by playing this. The song allows for lots of jamming when played live, which makes it a popular cover for many bands.
  • This song is ideal for long jams. The two main chords (A and D) are played during the verses, and during the chorus there are three chords (A, D and E). In Mojo magazine, January 2005, Donovan said: "Season of the Witch' continues to be a perennial influence because it allows a jam – not a 12-bar or Latin groove, but a very modern jam. Led Zeppelin used to warm up every day to it on the road during the soundcheck. It makes me very proud that I've created certain forms that other bands can get off on, to explore, be experimental, or just break the rules."
  • Donovan's producer was Mickie Most, an interesting character who oversaw many hit records in the '60s and '70s (for more on Mickie, see our interview with Alan Merrill of The Arrows ).

In the same Mojo interview, Donovan said: "I remember the bass line going down and Mickie saying, 'We've got a problem. The engineers are saying that they can't turn the bass up.' I said, Why? They said, 'Well, it's going into the red.' And so he said to the engineers, 'Look, you go into the red, I'm giving you permission. Go in the red! That's the bass sound I want. Very, very loud.' And they said, 'Well, we'll have to have a meeting.' So they went upstairs and had a meeting about whether the bass should go into the red. And they came down, they said, 'No, I'm sorry, the equipment can't stand it.' So Mickie Most said, 'Look, I've just made a record deal with your boss Clive Davis for $5 million and seven bands. And he's given me $1m right now. So do you think if I phone him up, you'd give me a little bit more bass?' And they looked at each other, and immediately realized that their jobs were on the line. They said, 'OK, you've got more bass.' We got more bass the needle went into the red, the equipment didn't blow up. I guess next time they made that needle, they did that thing by just moving the red bit a bit farther to the right, like in Spinal Tap: 'My amp goes up to 11!'"
  • This song was covered by Al Kooper (Blood Sweat & Tears, The Blues Project) and Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash & Young) on the historically significant 1968 album Super Session. That gives us an excuse to tell a fun story: Stills was brought in midway through recording the album to replace Mike Bloomfield (Butterfield Band, Electric Flag). Now, Kooper was originally enthusiastic to play with Bloomfield, but Bloomfield had a habit of ditching at the worst possible time. So when he showed up at Al Kooper's house, Bloomfield complained of an infected toe, then proceeded to use the most expensive crystal bowl in the house to soak his toe in.

A photo of this (the toe) ended up on the back cover of the Super Session album. Then Mike Bloomfield simply disappeared in the morning, leaving only a note saying that he'd had insomnia. It wouldn't even be the last time he stood up Al Kooper!

In his memoir Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards , Al Kooper mentions that he's been moved to cover this song after a trip to London, when he'd heard Donovan's "Season of the Witch" coming out of every shop on King's Road.
  • "Fast" Eddie Hoh played drums on this song. He also played drums on the Super Session cover. Eddie Hoh also played percussion for The Mamas & The Papas, The Monkees, and dozens of other acts.
  • Other covers of this very portable song include Vanilla Fudge on a 1960s single and several of their 2000s albums, Luna on a 1996 single, and Joan Jett on her Naked album of 2004.
  • Many came across the song for the first time in late 2010 after it was used in an ad for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7.

    If I Needed You Lyrics

    If I Needed You
    Would you come to me,
    Would you come to me,
    And ease my pain?
    If you needed me
    I would come to you
    I'd swim the seas
    For to ease your pain

    In the night forlorn
    The morning's born
    And the morning shines
    With the lights of love
    You will miss sunrise
    If you close your eyes
    That would break
    My heart in two

    The lady's with me now
    Since I showed her how
    To lay her lily
    Hand in mine
    Loop and Lil agree
    She's a sight to see
    And a treasure for
    The poor to find

    If I needed you
    Would you come to me,
    Would you come to me,
    And ease my pain?
    If you needed me
    I would come to you
    I'd swim the seas
    For to ease your pain

    If I Needed You
  • Townes Van Zandt introduced the song with the following statement at a private concert in Houston: "It came to me in a dream. I was living in Tennessee with Guy and Susanna Clark, and I was asleep, and I had a notepad by my mattress - I had a mattress on the floor. I was dreaming that I was a folk singer, and this was the song I played, and I happened to wake up, write it down, and went right back to sleep. The next morning I woke up, went to the room with all the guitars, picked up a guitar and played it through. It never has changed."
  • One of Van Zandt's most romantic love songs, many will know the tune from Emmylou Harris and Don Williams 1981 duet version. Released as the first single from Harris' album Cimarron, it topped the Canadian country chart as well as reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.
  • Guy Clark covered the song on his 2011 Songs & Stories album.
  • Actors Johan Heldenbergh and Veerle Baetens covered this as part of The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band for the 2012 Belgian film The Broken Circle Breakdown.
  • Julia Roberts performed this in the 1998 movie Stepmom. It was also used in Off the Black (2006), starring Nick Nolte, and Crazy Heart (2009), starring Jeff Bridges.
  • In an episode of Austin Pickers in 1984, Van Zandt explained that he and the Clarks were all sick with the flu, which led to bizarre dreams like the one that inspired this song.

    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli

    Call my baby lollipop
    Tell you why
His kiss is sweeter than an apple pie
And when he does his shaky rockin' dance
    Man, I haven't got a chance

    I call him

    [Chorus:]
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop.....

Sweeter than candy on a stick
    Huckleberry, cherry or lime
    If you had a choice
    He'd be your pick
    But lollipop is mine

    [Chorus:]
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop.....

    Crazy way he thrills me
    Tell you why
Just like a lightning from the sky
He loves to kiss me till I can't see straight
    GEE, MY LOLLIPOP IS GREAT

    I call him
    [Chorus:]
    Lollipop lollipop
    Oh lolli lolli lolli
    Lollipop lollipop.....

  • The Chordettes were a female vocal group from Sheboygan, Wisconsin who formed in 1946 by Jinny Lockard and three of her college friends. They became regulars on Arthur Godfrey's television show for 4 years in 1949, singing a cappella in the barbershop style. They first established themselves with "Mr. Sandman" in 1954 which stayed at #1 for 7 weeks. By this time the quartet was made up of Janet Ertel (bass), who married Archie Bleyer, the owner of Cadence Records, who they now were recording for, as well as Janet Ertel's sister-in-law Carol Buschman (baritone), Lynn Evans (lead singer) and Margie Needham (tenor), who had replaced Jinny Lockard in 1953.
  • This teen novelty song was originally recorded by Ronald And Ruby and got to #20 in the US. The Chordettes recorded it as a full round-like arrangement, complete with popping sounds.
  • Ronald and Ruby (real names Beverly Ross and Lee Morris) were a racially mixed duo, an unusual sight in the 50's. "Lollipop" was their only hit as a duo.
  • In the UK, this was the Chordettes biggest ever hit. A rival version by the UK vocal group The Mudlarks did better - peaking at #2.
  • This was featured in the 1986 film Stand By Me.
  • This was written by Beverly Ross and Julius Dixon. Ross had already been writing for artists like Bill Haley And The Comets ("Dim, Dim the Lights (I Want Some Atmosphere)"), and she was carving out a successful songwriting career for herself. She has 186 songs registered with Broadcast Music Incorporated including "Candy Man," by Roy Orbison, "Judy's Turn To Cry," by Lesley Gore, and "Remember When" by the Earls.
  • This song was sung in a 2009 advert for Dell computers.
  • There is an interesting story behind this song. Julius Dixson (who also used the spelling Dixon) and Beverly Ross had an important meeting with a music publisher. Ross arrived on time but Dixson was late and he gave the excuse that his daughter had got a lollipop stuck in her hair. As his wife was having trouble removing it from the screaming child, Dixson felt that he needed to stay home until the crisis had calmed down. On hearing this story, Beverly Ross sat down at the piano and immediately penned this song.

    Vanishing Mind Lyrics

    On the longest day
    The Vanishing Mind
Knows not when the day ends
    Who could care for you
    Would could understand

    In the room sealed shut
And you’re not what you were
    So much sweeter now
    That there’s nothing left to
    Remember you

    It’s what brought you here
    It’s what keeps you here
    Who could care for you
    Who could understand
Know not when the day ends or begins anymore
In the hallway and waiting again

Here we are, here we sit
    The light turning grey
    Your smile brings me back
    To the longest day
    The vanishing mind

    Vanishing Mind
  • This song takes on the topic of Alzheimer's disease and dementia - something Calexico songwriters Joey Burns and John Convertino both had to deal with. Convertino's mother had Alzheimer's and died from the disease; Burns' grandmother was afflicted with dementia and didn't recognize him on her deathbed.

The last track on the Algiers album, Convertino got the idea for the song after reading an article about death row inmates in California who have dementia or Alzheimer's. The article explained how other inmates are called upon to help out in these cases. This led to the theme of the song, which is about caring for others regardless of circumstance.
