The title track to Fiona Apple's third album, this was one of two songs that survived the sessions recorded with producer Jon Brion (the last track on the album, "Waltz (Better Than Fine)," is the other). Apple's second album was issued in 1999, and Extraordinary Machine was slated for release in 2003. Most of the songs didn't come together to Fiona's satisfaction, and the album was delayed until 2005 when Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew took over as producers, completing the other nine tracks plus "Parting Gift," which was a new song Fiona wrote.

Before the official release of the album, however, a version was leaked on the internet and shared over the peer-to-peer networks that were flourishing at the time. According to Kehew , this leaked copy was doctored by whoever put it out - it wasn't the full version she recorded with Jon Brion.

On this track, Fiona sings about how she enjoys being out of her comfort zone, but has to deal with a man who likes to stay the same. She points out that while she is often perceived as a fragile little flower, she is actually quite resilient - an "extraordinary machine."

Fiona took the photo that appears on the album cover - it's a flower that was growing at her house, and on the inside cover is that same flower after it had bloomed. Her motivation for taking the cover shot herself: to avoid a photo shoot.

This song is about skydiving, which Dave Mustaine was into at the time - he said it helped replace his unhealthy addictive behavior.

Bass player David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza also got into it, but guitarist Marty Friedman took some coaxing. He agreed to jump if the album went platinum, and when it did, he made the leap.

Dave Mustaine wrote this song with the band's bass player, David Ellefson. In our interview with Ellefson , he said: "Dave and I talked about buzzwords and the lingo used in and around the skydiving community. So he was throwing some ideas to me and then I would go home and pen the lyric, and bring it back in for him."

The title refers to what happens to a skydiver when his parachute doesn't deploy: you hit the dirt at very high speed and most likely die.

This song finds Fiona looking back on the insecure version of herself, ultimately promising that it will lead to a better version. The lyric contains a few words that don't show up in typical songs, but Fiona isn't a typical songwriter. "Folderol" (in the line, "after all the folderol") means events that may seem important at the time, but are pretty much meaningless in the big picture.

Apple's co-producer on the track, Brian Kehew , told us: "She would find in her reading interesting words or phrases and then find a way to incorporate that into some meanings she already had for a song."

Another example is the word "Rubicon," which appears in the line "I was on my way beyond the Rubicon." The Rubicon is the point of no return - it is the name of a river in Italy famously crossed by Julius Caesar, signifying his commitment to war.

The Extraordinary Machine album - Fiona's third - was extraordinarily difficult to record. The first sessions were with producer Jon Brion, who produced her previous album. Fiona wasn't happy with the recordings, and neither was her record company, who brought in a new producer - Mike Elizondo - to take over. Results were mixed, and the sessions came to an impasse when the record company tightened the strings on the budget, telling Fiona that they would have to approve the final recording of a song before they would pay for her to record another one - something she refused to do.

The album, scheduled for release in 2003, seemed dead in 2005 (not helping matters, a version was released on the internet and widely distributed). This is when Brian Kehew stepped in, offering to record the unfinished songs with Fiona in his home studio, essentially starting from scratch (he would get paid on the backend with a producer credit). Fiona took the offer, and over the next month, they recorded the album using a simplified approach.

Kehew, unfortunately, was not involved in the mixing process. He explained: "I'd written a guitar solo in two parts that answer each other for a song called 'Better Version of Me.' I recorded it as a quick demo, because the last thing to do on the record was the solo for the song. We spent a last day with Fiona and Mike and I in the studio, and I said, 'Here's the two melodies, but what I want to do is break them out into, like, 60 different instruments, and each instrument will play one or two notes of the solo, and then we'll jump to another one. So it'll be this real hodgepodge of two melodies played by a flute, then strings, then triangle, then synth, then bass, then guitar, then oboe, and that will complete melody number one. And then we'll do different instruments on melody number two. Might be one note, might be three or four notes in a row. And then we jump to another instrument.' It was just a creative idea to make what sounded like two guitars, maybe like Brian May, playing two melodies against each other. We had this whole elaborate full day of overdubbing parts to make these solos come out, and somehow in the mixing, since I wasn't there, it ended up sounding like two guitars mostly playing against each other, and all these beautiful layers of weird instruments on top of each other, I can't really hear them. They're almost inaudible. So sadly, no one was minding the store when it was mixed and they missed out on some things on the record."

Jimmy Olsen's Blues

This song is written from the perspective of Jimmy Olsen, a character in the Superman comic books. Olsen is a young reporter who in this song is envisioned with a case of depression, as he feels overshadowed by his co-workers, Clark Kent and Lois Lane. It's one of the few Superman songs that isn't about the man in the red suit.

The album title also has a Superman theme: kryptonite is substance from Superman's home planet that takes away his powers. Explaining the phrase "pocket full of kryptonite," lead singer Chris Barron said: "No matter who you are, how good-looking you are, how strong you are or what nationality you are, somewhere in your soul there's a kernel of uniqueness, goodness and beauty. The pocket full of kryptonite is a metaphor for the gem at the bottom of every soul."

Suedehead

The name "Suedehead" came from a book by British author Richard Allen about post-skinhead gangs. The lyrics do not appear to have much to do with the novel and Morrissey himself later described the song as being about the life he lived in his early teenage years around 1972.

Morrissey was a journalist for the Record Mirror before forming the Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982. He went solo in 1988 and this was his first release as a solo artist. By 2004 he'd achieved 7 Top-10 singles in the UK.

After The Burial originally recorded this song for an EP but it never really happened so they eventually decided to use it to close their Wolves Within album. Guitarist Justin Lowe explained to Artist Direct : "That was recorded around the time we tracked the This Life Is All We Have EP. We didn't know what we would do with the track. Since it wasn't on the EP, we just started playing it live. We've been playing it live for about a year now. We weren't sure if it would make the album or not, but we were playing it live so much we were like, 'Yeah, let's throw it on there!' It doesn't really sound like the rest of the tracks on the record so we put it last, and we hoped it would be a good closer."

Lowe told Artist Direct the story of the song: "It was written, and we actually recorded it a couple of years ago," he said. " It's just coming out now. Trent (Hafdahl, guitar) had a demo for the song which had the intro. It was just played on a clean guitar, and it went into this riff he created with this low tuning. I had never heard anything like it before. He shot it over to me. I re-orchestrated the beginning intro from his clean guitar, and I actually incorporated the electronic instruments you hear in the beginning."

It was the first song that After The Burial did in the C-sharp tuning. "This was the first song we could showcase that tuning in," said Lowe. "We focused in on the groove element of the song. The sound of the C-sharp note is a sort of percussive sound. It's an abrasive tone. The song is really built around a percussive guitar sound that's all following the drums on pretty much the entire song. It's a cool style so we went for it, especially on the outro."

"We wanted the outro to have a little bit of a cinematic feel to it," Lowe continued. "We tried to get that across as much as possible. We took a little focus off the guitars and shifted it over to the melodic orchestration we have at the end. The guitars and drums are doing the same thing most of the time. I think it's pretty cool how it turned out. It's definitely got a darker feel. It's one of the darkest songs we've ever written. A lot of our stuff is pretty uplifting here and there. There was a darker feel, but it sounded cool so we went for it."

Collins signed up for wood shop class in High School so that he could sniff glue all day. On one occasion, he passed out in class from sniffing glue.
In 1986, Collins was involved in a death that resulted from drunk driving. His girlfriend was riding in the car with him when he crashed. She was killed while Allen Collins was paralyzed.
Collins was convicted of DUI manslaughter after pleading no contest. He had a bad habit of drinking throughout his years with Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1990, he died of pneumonia.
At one point, Collins father forced him to cut his hair and get a job.

This mood-shifting suite starts with a young Beyoncé accepting a Sammy Davis Jr. Award at a Houston talent show. We hear the future starlet thanking her parents and her beloved H-town. Beyoncé proceeds to sing about refusing to succumb to the pressures that her record label puts her under to make commercial "boring" music.

The stream of consciousness verse was penned by the song's producer Boots one night at 5am. He recalled: "I had met with a record label earlier in the afternoon and they had heard some of the songs I was working on for the Beyoncé album and said 'That's so interesting Beyoncé is doing weird records like this…. Once that comes out we can put stuff out like that too!'"

"I was so appalled with the fact that record labels don't view music as art anymore," Boots continued. "They view it as product. So I wrote this late one sleepless night and it turned into an entire stream of consciousness about whatever came to mind, the state of myself, the state of pop music, the overall state of the world and most of all, people blindly going about their daily life as worker drones but ultimately not doing anything to be happy."

"I showed it to Bey a few days later and she was over the moon about it, and got real fired up," Boots added. "She said it was something she had been wanting to express for so long… We worked together to perfect it for her and this is the final product."

The song was originally titled "Ghost Around," which Boots explained is, "a term I made up for something always being there, always being around and nobody knows it."

Both "Ghost Around" and the original version of "Haunted," "I'm On To You" were originally included on Boots' SoundCloud. The producer's online audio distribution platform contained several reference tracks for Beyoncé, but the songs were swiftly taken down once her album was dropped. "Ghost" blends seamlessly into the second half of the song, which is a spacey, eerie erotic ballad in which a woman is haunted by her lover in a spooky yet sexy way.

Beyoncé is a "visual album," which includes 17 full-length videos. The singer explained she wanted to return to Michael Jackson's era when the visuals told the story of the song. "I see music," said the R&B songstress. "It's more than just what I hear … I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."

The song's haunting atmosphere is coupled with a video that was filmed by director Jonas Akerlund on August 10, 2013. The creepy, part horror, part psychosexual fantasy clip finds Beyoncé wandering around a big mansion with rooms containing all kinds of freaks and weirdoes. "Part of my challenge with her is to take her to places that maybe she hasn't been," Škerlund said of the clip. "And, maybe take a step out her comfort zone."

The "Haunted" part of the song was used as the background track for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer.

The music video for "Ghost" was an inspiration for the design of the 78-story Premier Tower, a skyscraper in Melbourne, Australia's central business district. Australian firm Elenberg Fraser said in a press release: "For those more on the art than science side, we will reveal that the form does pay homage to something more aesthetic - we're going to trust you've seen the music video for Beyoncé's 'Ghost.'"

This song depicts the flight from Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana; the plane was carrying the band Lynyrd Skynyrd and crashed that night. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant fell asleep during this flight and was sleeping on the floor when the emergency began. He was quickly awoken and put into a seat and strapped in. The airplane was supposed to be repaired when the crew got to Baton Rouge, where a mechanic from Texas was meeting them. Both engines were failing during flight and the loss of gasoline was too much for the plane to make it to Baton Rouge. Once the crew realized they couldn't make it to Baton Rouge, they turned the plane around to reach the nearest airport. Shortly after the plane turned around, it ran out of gas, the engines turned off, and the controls were no longer operable for controlling the decent of the plane.

This moody track finds Beyoncé collaborating for the first time with Drake and his in-house producer, Noah "40" Shebib. The song finds the bootylicious star singing about relationship problems and fears that she is being overly possessive and taking things too far.

Majid Jordan, also contributed to the song's composition. The Canadian duo are a pair of Toronto producers, Majid Al Maskati and Jordan "ClassAct" Ullman, who are signed to Drake's OVO Sound label. They are best known for their contribution to Drizzy's hit single, "Hold On We're Going Home."

Beyoncé was released on December 13, 2013 with no advance notice, and Drake told Rolling Stone he had no idea that the album was coming anytime soon. "They were totally vague about it," he said.

Drake went on to recall how a member of Beyoncé's team flew out to play him the "Mine" video and get his approval. "I said, 'That's cool,' she closed her laptop real fast, walked off and got on the phone," Drake said. "By the time I came offstage, the album was out.
