XO Lyrics

Flight controller here is looking very carefully at the situation
Obviously a major malfunction

Your love is bright as ever (ever, ever, ever)
Even in the shadows (shadows, shadows, shadows)
Baby kiss me (kiss me, kiss me, kiss me)
Before they turn the lights out (lights out, lights out, lights out)
Your heart is glowing (glowing, glowing, glowing)
And I'm crashing into you (into you, into you, into you)
Baby kiss me (kiss me, kiss me, kiss me)
Before they turn the lights out (the lights out)
Before they turn the lights out (the lights out)
Baby love me lights out

In the darkest night hour (In the darkest night hour)
I'll search through the crowd (I'll search through the crowd)
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

We don't have forever
Ooh, baby daylight's wasting (wasting, wasting, wasting)
You better kiss me (kiss me)
Before our time has run out
Mmm yeah...
Nobody sees what we see
They're just hopelessly gazing, oh
Oh, baby take me, me
Before they turn the lights out
Before our time has run out
Baby love me lights out

In the darkest night hour (In the darkest night hour)
I'll search through the crowd (I'll search through the crowd)
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

I love you like XO
You love me like XO
You kill me boy XO
You love me like XO
All that I see
Give me everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

In the darkest night hour (In the darkest night hour)
I'll search through the crowd (I'll search through the crowd)
Your face is all that I see
I'll give you everything
Baby love me lights out
Baby love me lights out
You can turn my lights out

  • This rousing pop ballad finds Beyoncé reuniting with previous collaborators Ryan Tedder and The-Dream. Tedder spoke to Australian radio station Nova about the collaboration. "Personally the song we did I like more than 'Halo'. I think it's a bigger, better song," Tedder said. He added: "[The-Dream] did 'Single Ladies', I did 'Halo' so we thought - what would happen if we just did a song together?"
  • Beyoncé performed the song for the first time during the Chicago stop of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour on December 13, 2013. She told the crowd: "I'm gonna sing this song, which is a brand new song. It hasn't even been out for 24 hours. I want to sing this to you all because it was written for you all. This is the first time. Something I'll never forget."
  • The video finds Beyoncé and the girls running loose in an amusement park. It was filmed by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, who also directed Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" clip, on the famed Cyclone roller coaster in Coney Island, New York. Beyoncé's three pals are played by models Jourdan Dunn, Diandra Forrest and Jessica White. Jourdan Dunn's cookery show airs on Jay-Z's Life + Times channel.
  • This was released as the lead single along with "Drunk In Love" from Beyoncé on December 17, 2013. After getting the Bey Hive buzzing with talk of a record release in 2013, by December the singer's fans were resigned to having to wait until the following year for a new offering from their idol. Then early on December 13th the "visual album" was dropped onto iTunes without any promotion or prior warning. Speaking to Billboard magazine about the time lag before the record was made available to the public, Pharrell Williams, who co-produced the track "Blow" said. "She's very particular. She's not going to put it out until it's ready. When you know what you want, you won't stop until you get it."
  • Beyoncé was the top-selling album all over the world within hours of its release, eventually taking the #1 spot in 104 countries. In smashed the US's previous iTunes one week record of 465,000 downloads of Taylor Swift's Red LP within three days. The 617,000 downloads sold between December 13-15, easily surpassed the 465,000 copies of the Nashville Pop Princess' fourth album in its debut week.
  • Tedder only learnt of Beyoncé's availability an hour and a half before its release. "I knew 90 minutes before it dropped. Ninety minutes. And I said nothing because I love Beyoncé and I don't want her to hate me," he said.

"I heard a rumor and then I didn't say anything. I told my wife, `I think Beyonce's album is dropping in 90 minutes and then I knew that `XO' was on the album," Tedder added. "I knew it was a single. I didn't know if it was first or second. I didn't know anything, and then today I found out that it was the lead."
  • Beyoncé debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, following the chart-topping Dangerously In Love, B'Day, I Am... Sasha Fierce and 4. This meant that Beyoncé became the first woman to top the chart with her first five studio albums. The only two other acts to have taken their first five studio sets to peak position were folk group the Kingston Trio and rapper DMX.
  • The song starts off with a six-second audio clip of former NASA public affairs officer Steve Nesbitt recorded moments after the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986. "Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation," he states. "Obviously a major malfunction." Former NASA astronauts and families labeled Beyoncé's choice of sample as "insensitive."

Beyoncé responded to the outcry over the audio by expressing her sympathies for the families of those who died in the Challenger disaster and indicating no offense was intended. "My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster," she said "The song 'XO' was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you. The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten."
  • Despite being released on December 14th, Beyoncé sold 1.3 million by the end of the year in the United States making it 2013's best-selling album by a woman. The next-highest ranked leading lady was Katy Perry, with Prism, which sold 969,000 copies. Beyoncé was the eighth best-selling album of the year overall.
  • Beyoncé performed her first televised rendition of this tune during the BRIT awards in London on February 19, 2014. She dedicated the song to her fans as she sang the chorus, "Baby love me lights out." It was the Texan's first performance at the ceremony since 2004 when she sung "Crazy In Love."
  • John Mayer covered the song in April 2014 during one of his shows in Adelaide, Australia. An acoustic studio version of his folk-rock interpretation was made available for digital download on May 27, 2014 and entered the Hot 100 the following week at #90.
  • A singer named Ahmad Javon Lane filed a lawsuit over this song in November 2014 seeking $3 million in damages. The artist who records under the name of Javon alleged he originally wrote a track, titled "XOXO," which he shared with one of Beyonce's background vocalists. The star, according to him, consequently ripped it off for this song.

Beyoncé's attorney brushed the lawsuit off, stating: "The two works at issue are entirely different songs that share no lyrical or musical similarity, other than perhaps the letters 'X' and 'O'…there is no meaningful similarity in pitch series, rhythm or rhythmic patterns, melodic development or structure."

Here is a video of Javon's "XOXO" . Do you think they're similar? The judge obviously didn't think so. He threw the case out after ruling that Ahmad Javon Lane's track contained no discernible resemblance to Beyoncé's hit.

  • The phrase "Pulling a Beyoncé" has come to mean releasing something without warning, following Queen Bey's surprise dropping of her self-titled set.

    Hey Sandy Lyrics

    Hey Sandy
  • This is the opening theme to the Nickelodeon show The Adventures Of Pete And Pete.
  • This is based on a 1972 song of the same name by Harvey Andrews. Andrews' song is about Sandy Scheuer, a student at Kent State University who shot dead by the US National Guard during a protest on May 4, 1970.
  • The lyrics are hard to understand and remain a mystery, especially the third line. One theory of what that line says is, "Can You Settle to Shoot Me," as this would fit with the subject of the song and the next line - "Or have you picked your target yet."
  • On the Adventures Of Pete And Pete Season Set DVDs released in 2005, during the opening credits sequence for which this song is the theme, the closed captions say "Can you settle to shoot me?" on the third line, giving reason to believe that it is the actual line.
  • Danny Tamberelli, one of the title stars of Pete and Pete, confirmed in a 2012 interview on Reddit that the song's ambiguous third line is actually "Can you settle a sure bet."

Ask me what I did with my life
    I spent it with you
If I lose my fame and fortune
    Really don't matter
As long as I got you, baby

Clap your hands, drop so right
Clap your hands, drop so right
Clap your hands, drop so right
As long as I got you, baby
Clap your hands, drop so right

  • Duke Dumont's follow-up single to his #1 hit, "Need U (100%)" is a summery house tune that samples session singer Kelli-Leigh's version of Whitney Houston's song, "My Love Is Your Love." When DJ Annie Mac premiered the cut on her BBC Radio 1 show, she got so excited that she rewound the tune mid play to play it from the beginning again.
  • The interpolating song also features vocals by up-and-coming London based singer-songwriter Jax Jones.
  • Duke Dumont told MTV News UK about the inspiration for the tune: "I tend to make summery songs in the winter and winter songs in the summer," he said. "I'm like that typical British person that in the winter that moans that it's too cold and in the summer I moan that it's too hot, so the studio is my escapism."

He added: "There was no master plan like 'hey I'm a gonna make a summer song and then build a buzz around it in January' - there wasn't much thought process to it!"
  • Dumont explained why he chose to sample Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love." "Personally, I'd say it's one of my favorite Whitney songs, especially the later Whitney period," he said. "It got to a point (during the recording process) where I thought maybe it might be worth bringing a singer in and changing it but I thought you know what, out of respect as (the track) started off working the song around My Love Is Your Love I kept it in."

He continued: "What's quite nice is Wyclef Jean was one of the writer's of the song and obviously with things like that you need to seek permission to use the vocal and Wyclef is kind of quite tough with his music. He doesn't let people use his music for a lot of things but he was willing for us to use the Whitney recording. That was quite nice getting a little bit of respect from his side. So that was a nice touch to it."

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Lyrics

Tough, you think you've got the stuff
    You're telling me and anyone
    You're hard enough

You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
    For you tonight

    Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own

    We fight all the time
    You and I, that's alright
    We're the same soul
I don't need, I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more

    Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

    Say, say, say

I know that we don't talk
    I'm sick of it all
Can you hear me when I
Sing, you're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me

    We're here
I've still got to let you know
    A house doesn't make a home
    Don't leave me here alone

And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
    Sometimes you can't make it
Best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
  • This is a tribute to Bono's father Bob Hewson who died in 2001. Bono sang it for the first time at his father's funeral; it reflects on their tense relationship until just before his death, when Bono claims they became closer than ever before.
  • This was released as a single in every other part of the world except the US, where "All Because of You" was released in its place.
  • Bono's father enjoyed Opera music and used to sing as a hobby. This explains the line, "You are the reason the Opera is in me."
  • Bono: "His whole thing was, Don't dream - to dream is to be disappointed. That was really what I think was his advice to me. He didn't speak it in those words, but that's what he meant, and of course that's really a recipe for megalomania isn't it? I mean I was only ever interested in big ideas, and not so much dreaming but putting dreams into action, doing the things that you have in your head has become an important thing for me. The song was dedicated to him and it's a portrait of him - he was a great singer, a tenor, a working class Dublin guy who listened to the opera and conducted the stereo with my mother's knitting needles. He just loved Opera, so in the song, I hit one of those big tenor notes that he would have loved so much. I think he would have loved it, I hope so."
  • The Edge: "It's very hard when people refer to one of our old songs and say, 'Can you write another song as good as Where The Streets Have No Name or One? These are the kind of songs people refer to, but I think on this record, we may have a couple of songs which are equally as good, maybe even better. Insome ways I am still too close to really say for sure if I even believe it myself - and in the end what I believe is not that important, it's what everyone else thinks that will decide if the songs on this record are as good as our best work, so I am happy to just see what people think."
  • In 2006, this won a Grammy for Song Of The Year.
  • As a tribute to his father, Bono usually removes his large sunglasses during this song. His dad used to say to him, "Bono, why don't you ever take off those f--king glasses?"

    Storm Passes Away Lyrics

    As the clouds roll by
    I can see the sunshine
    Mmmhmmm

    'Cause it's sad and slow
    And oh so close
We fell together and made our way
    But now it seems
    You don't need me
Where will you go when the Storm Passes Away

    'Cause I'm on my knees
    Turn off the darkness please
    Where will you go
    And they keep telling me
I'm older than I'm supposed to be
You will go when the storm passes away

I'll keep the storm if I can keep you
I'll live in the rain if you will too
    We can ride together
    We can ride the weather

    'Cause I've lost my stance
    Just like a fallen man
Oh the things I've hoped you would say
    Your radiance runs deep
    In my colour scheme
Where will you go when the storm washed you away

    'Cause I'm on my knees
    Turn off the darkness please
    Where will you go
    'Cause they keep telling me
I'm older than I'm supposed to be
You will go when the storm passes away

  • Bugg penned this song with Raconteurs singer and guitarist Brendan Benson and the singer's longtime collaborator, Iain Archer from Snow Patrol. It was one of three songs written by the trio that ended up on Shangri La, the others being "Messed Up Kids" and "Kingpin."

"That came from my publishing end," Bugg recalled to Billboard magazine. "I was very sceptical about three guys in a room trying to write tunes, but I gave it a try and thought maybe I'd learn a thing or two. We just jammed around in the studio and it was fun and natural for a few days. So that was pretty sweet."

    Southern Accents Lyrics

There's a southern accent, where I come from
The young 'uns call it country
    The Yankees call it dumb
I got my own way of talkin'
But everything is done, with a southern accent
    Where I come from

Now that drunk tank in Atlanta's
Just a motel room to me
Think I might go work Orlando
If them orange groves don't freeze
I got my own way of workin'
But everything is run, with a southern accent
    Where I come from

For just a minute there I was dreaming
For just a minute it was all so real
For just a minute she was standing there, with me

    There's a dream I keep having
Where my mama comes to me
And kneels down over by the window
And says a prayer for me
I got my own way of prayin'
    But everyone's begun
    With a southern accent
    Where I come from

I got my own way of livin'
    But everything gets done
    With a southern accent
    Where I come from

  • Petty: "That may be my favorite among my songs - just in terms of a piece of pure writing. I remember writing it very vividly. It was in the middle of the night and I was playing it on the piano at home in Encino. I was just singing into my cassette recorder and suddenly these words came out. I was at the point in my career where I was very much trying to find some new ground. I thought I had used up what I had started with and I wanted a new direction. We had lived in California for about 10 years at that point and I started thinking about growing up in northern Florida, which is a lot different from Miami Beach. It's close to Georgia and I came from a real Southern family, and I wanted to address that world. Once I came up with this song, I decided to write an entire album about the theme."
  • Charles Kelley covered this for his debut solo album, The Driver, which was produced by Paul Worley. The Lady Antebellum member first performed the song with Trisha Yearwood back in 2013 at the Petty Fest in Nashville. "I'd always loved that song, and I always thought it would make a good country song, but I never thought about it necessarily as something Lady Antebellum would do," Kelley told Rolling Stone Country.

Kelley is joined by Stevie Nicks on his version. "It's really funny, when we first started the record, one of the things Paul and I talked about was trying not to maybe have a female harmony singer," he said. "[But Nicks] is the biggest Tom Petty fan. Paul kind of goes through the channels, and somehow it comes back that she wants to sing on it, so I was like, 'Of course. It's Stevie Nicks. Yes. She's going to sing on it.' So I already broke my rule of no females on the record."

Kelley told Radio.com that every time he hears the song, it reminds him of how his father grew up. "He was one of those guys that really did walk five miles to school, and had to work on the farm after school, and did things like that," he said. "So I always kind of picture him in my mind when I'm singing that song."

    Gimme Dat Ding
  • Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood wrote this song. Some other hit songs they wrote include "The Air That I Breathe," "Free Electric Band" and "It Never Rains In Southern California," which was a hit for Hammond.
  • Hammond and Hazlewood wrote this for the children's television show Oliver And The Overlord. Later, it the became background tune used on The Benny Hill show.
  • The Pipkins were not a real group - the song was recorded by producer Roger Greenaway and session singer Tony Burrows. For live appearances, The Pipkins were Davey Sands and Len Marshall.
  • This was used on the TV show Ally McBeal several times, for John Cage (played by Peter MacNicol) to do his "Angry Dance" to.
  • Singer Tony Burrows told the story of the song to Mojo magazine August 2010: "It was written for a children's TV programme called Oliver In The Underworld. "Freddie Garrity (of Freddie and the Dreamers) was the artist. It was the only song Freddie didn't do on the album, Roger Greenaway and I were booked to do backing vocals for the album at Abbey Road. Basically we made (Ding) in the studio. It was a conversation between a metonome and a pianola - the metronome had lost its click, so it was originally called Gimme Dat Click. But that wouldn't sing, so we changed it."
  • Burrows admitted to Mojo: "I was surprised it was a hit. It was banned in Italy, they thought it was vulgar."
  • Burrows was part of four different acts that had a hit song around this time. In addition to The Pipkins, he sang lead on Love Grows (where My Rosemary Goes) by Edison Lighthouse, "My Baby Loves Lovin'" by White Plains, and "United We Stand" by Brotherhood of Man. Burrows performed all three of these songs just mentioned in addition to "Gimme Dat Ding" on the BBC music show Top of the Pops in 1970. He told Mojo: "The producer said, 'The word has come from above that you're not to be used any more, people are beginning to think it's a con.' They banned me from Top of the Pops. I was not played by the BBC for two years."

    Old School Love Lyrics

Give me that Old School Love right now
You know that only you and me alone

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

Give me that late 80's early 90's old school
Feeling like my second album, so cool
    Chiraq summer looking so cruel
Look shorty in the eye, told me it was no rules
Went to speak but was like never mind
Let my mind just sneak back to a better time
When I was his age and if he's ever mine
Thinking he would only think back to this and never find
Better times to think back to when it comes
And he's older in the presence of somebody young
Telling him the same things that he told me
And he reacts the same way as that O.G.
    But it's old school, it's like '03
And this old man is my old me
Takes a long time to happen so fast
To realize that your future is somebody else's past, what's up

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

Analog black vinyl spinning sounding so good
Top down, can't be a classic if it's no wood
If you don't know what, then you new school
Floor model is the foundation for your YouTubes
Model flows off of Fat Boys and Juice Crews
    Melle Mel's, Ice-T's, and the 2 Cools
Add a Moe Dee and a Double L
Had to walk cause it's hard to run in those unbuckled shells
One microphone and a couple 12s
Six drum sounds and a couple bells
Is all you had to make a couple rails
And that's a track, and if you want it (Eh)
You have to make it like that
Now what's one turtle to a couple snails?
Takes a long time to happen so fast
And realize your future is somebody else's past, what's up

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    Chiraq summer looking so cruel
How can I reel-to-reel when there's Pro Tool?
I can't dig it at all because there's no tube
Fire when you speak but ain't no warmth in your vocals
Might have been a better rhyme then just never mind
If it's better with time then think in line
That you're going to be your nicest 'round your midlife crisis
If your life like Christ live your midlife like it's Christ-like
    But nigga' I ain't psychic
I know it's all a cycle and everybody bike it
And France is enormous you're Lance with endorsements
But you might need a hand to enhance your performance
Consider this a kilogram of encouragement
Teach you how to sneak it past the enforcement
And when you get it through in a manner so cool
Remember to give a little nod to the old school, what's up

Give me that old school love right now
I'm leaving it all up to you darling,
    Giving you everything you want
And give me that old school love right now
You know that only you and me alone

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    As long as I'm here
As long as you love me
Give me that old school love right now

    Old School Love
  • This stand alone single is an easygoing, positive jam that finds the Chi-City rhymer reminiscing about the good old days of hip-hop as he shouts out old school rappers such as The Fat Boys, Melle Mel and Ice-T.
  • English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran croons the chorus. While it may seem like an unexpected match, the "The A Team" singer has previously collaborated with several rappers from his home country including Devlin on the UK Top Ten single "Watchtower" and Wretch 32 on the track "Hush Little Baby."
  • Sheraan told Nova FM back in February 2013 that he was about to record the song with Lu. "We have the same A&R in America and… he just gave me about seven beats and said write choruses to all of these beats," he said. "Lupe loved one of them and is going to hop on it. I'm a massive Lupe Fiasco fan so it's cool."
  • Lu created a blog for his fans to share some memories of their old school love.
  • The song samples the piano riff from Kanye West’s "Family Business" off his 2004 debut album The College Dropout.

    Enola Gay Lyrics

    Enola Gay
  • The Enola Gay was the American plane that dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima in World War II. It was named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the plane's pilot, Paul Tibbets. So why did the electronic music group OMD write a song about it? In our 2010 interview, we asked their lead singer Andy McCluskey, who replied: "Many people simply don't know what it's actually about. Some even thought it was a coded message that we were gay. We were both geeks about WWII airplanes. The most famous and influential single bomber was Enola Gay. Obvious choice for us, really."
  • OMD is the shortened form of the band's full name: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. This was the first of 7 Top-10 UK singles for the group; their only US hit was "If You Leave," which was written for the 1985 movie Pretty In Pink.
  • OMD played this in the 1981 cult film Urgh! A Music War, which is a collection of Punk and New Wave band performances.
  • Andy McCluskey of OMD explained in a September 2010 interview with CMU how the OMD duo create a track. "The music always comes first, usually inspired by a noise or drum pattern, or a sample or something. But I do have ideas about songs I want to write, lyrically or thematically. In the early days I was Mr. Anorak, I had a ring binder full of proposed song titles and ideas that I tried to marry with the music we made and I'd go, 'Oh, that might go on that'. So the music always comes first and the words go on top."

    The Little Drummer Boy
  • Pentatonix are an a capella group comprising Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. The quintet released a video in late 2013, in which they covered The Harry Simeone Chorale's holiday classic to the background of Los Angeles as a gift for their three million followers. The clip began with 6.4 million US Streams in its first week, resulting in it debuting at #13 on the Hot 100, which was coincidentally the peak position of The Harry Simeone Chorale's famous rendition of the song.

The song achieved a high chart placing as a result of a change in Billboard's methodology in February 2013, when YouTube views and other streams became a factor in tabulating the Hot 100. Baauer's chart-topping single, "Harlem Shake" was the first song to benefit from the new policy.
  • Asked by Billboard magazine what the impetus was for recording the song, the quintet replied: "We'd been wanting to arrange the song for a while, but could never really figure out a direction. We decided to just try it out, and we were incredibly happy with the way it turned out!"

    Surfin' Safari Lyrics

    Let's go surfin' now
    Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
    (Come on and safari with)

Early in the morning we'll be startin' out
Some honeys will be coming along
    We're loading up our woody
    With our boards inside
And headin' out singing our song

Come on (surfin') baby wait and see (Surfin' Safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me

    Let's go surfin' now
    Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
    (Come on and safari with)

    At huntington and malibu
    They're shooting the pier
At rincon they're walking the nose
We're going on safari to the islands this year
So if you're coming get ready to go

Come on (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me

    Let's go surfin' now
    Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
    (Come on and safari with)

They're anglin' in laguna in Cerro Azul
They're kicking out in dohini too
I tell you surfing's mighty wild
    It's getting bigger every day
From Hawaii to the shores of Peru

Come on (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)
Yes I'm gonna (surfin') take you surfin' (surfin' safari) with me
Come along (surfin') baby wait and see (surfin' safari)

    Let's go surfin' now
    Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me
    (Come on and safari with)

    With me
    Surfin' safari
    With me
    Surfin' safari
    With me
    Surfin' safari

    Surfin' Safari
  • Released June 4th 1962, this was the Beach Boys' first major hit. In his 1990 autobiography Brian Wilson said it sold 900,000 copies, and more overseas: #1 in Sweden, #13 in New Zealand, and a hit too in Italy and France, where it attracted cover versions.
  • Written by Wilson and lead singer Mike Love , this was the first recording to display the distinctive counterpoint harmonies for which the group became famous. The recording was also self-produced, and taken to Capitol complete with its B-side "409" which was a minor hit. This precedent made the Beach Boys the first total, self-contained artists of the Rock Era, not to be matched for many years to come.
  • When the Chrysler corporation conducted a survey in 2004 on "What is the best song to cruise to?" - this won.
  • The Beach Boys had signed with Capitol Records, and when this song was climbing the charts, they were working on their first album.
  • On the DVD Brian Wilson Songwriter 1962 - 1969 , Mike Love credits Murry Wilson - father of Brian, Carl and Dennis of The Beach Boys - with the distinctive treblelly guitar sound on this track. When Brian Wilson would leave the control room to record his bass parts, Murry, who fancied himself a producer, would switch the sounds on the guitars to the treble he preferred. Love feels that guitar sound really cut through and helped "Surfin' Safari" sell.
